There was no comparison group, so it cannot show which part helped or that treatment works.
- OTQualitative2018Experience of sleep disruption in primary Sjögren's syndrome: A focus group study. The British journal of occupational therapyFocus group participants with primary Sjögren’s syndrome described unrefreshing sleep, night awakenings and dryness disrupting sleep. They found CBT-I ideas acceptable when clinicians explained the rationale, though sleep restriction received a mixed response.
- PTRCT2018Effects of core strength training on core stability.Journal of physical therapy science4 weeks of core strength training in 24 normal students reduced sway during a sudden push to the back while sitting, but many other seated balance measures did not change.
- PTOTRCT2018Assisting hand function after spinal cord injury with a fabric-based soft robotic glove.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationNine people with spinal cord injuries lifted objects more successfully while wearing a soft robotic glove operated by a researcher. The glove improved hand function scores and lift force, but participants could not put it on themselves.
- PTPilot2018Safety and immediate effect of gait training using a Hybrid Assistive Limb in patients with cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 14 patients with cerebral palsy who could walk, one 20-minute HAL session raised gait speed from 0.71 m/s to 0.83 m/s and step length from 0.44 m to 0.47 m. No major adverse events occurred, but two minor adverse events were reported.
- PTRCT2018Effect of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation in community-dwelling elderly people: a randomised controlled trial.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationDuring eyes-open standing, weak noisy electrical stimulation at the mastoids reduced sway path and side-to-side and front-to-back sway speed in 32 independent older adults; sham did not.
- PTRCT2018Practice-based skill acquisition of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchair propulsion versus regular handrim propulsion in novices.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationNovices improved wheelchair propulsion efficiency and steering with practice. Power-assisted wheels used less energy and felt easier, but were harder to control. Switching between power-assisted and regular wheels did not show clear carryover.
- PTSLPSystematic Review2018Diagnostic Criteria for Somatosensory Tinnitus: A Delphi Process and Face-to-Face Meeting to Establish Consensus.Trends in hearingExperts agreed that tinnitus can change with head, neck, jaw, eye movements, somatic maneuvers, or trigger-point pressure. - Other2018Analysis of neuroanatomical differences in mice with genetically modified serotonin transporters assessed by structural magnetic resonance imaging.Molecular autismIn mice, removing the serotonin transporter gene made total brain volume smaller, mainly in females. Adding a variant linked to autism alone did not change brain volume. Combining models showed serotonin transporter changes affected several brain regions.
- SLPOther2018Operationalizing atypical gaze in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders: a cohesion-based approach.Molecular autismToddlers with autism looked less like typical toddlers on a research gaze measure during face-to-face speech and sandwich making, but not moving toys. Within autism, gaze clustered most on toys and sandwich making and least on speech.
- PTCase-Control2018Running mechanics of females with bilateral compartment syndrome.Journal of physical therapy scienceFemale runners with bilateral chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) showed greater overstride and ankle dorsiflexion angles at initial contact than healthy runners. These mechanical differences were strongly linked in the CECS group but not in controls, suggesting gait retraining targets.
- PTOTRCT2018A robot-based gait training therapy for pediatric population with cerebral palsy: goal setting, proposal and preliminary clinical implementation.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationFour children with cerebral palsy completed a 16-session robot-assisted gait training program. Most showed improved walking speed, endurance, and strength. Without a control group, it is impossible to know if the robot or the concurrent conventional therapy caused these changes.
- OTCase Report2018Effects of Oral Stimulation Intervention in Newborn Babies with Cri du Chat Syndrome: Single-Subject Research Design.Occupational therapy internationalBottle intake and oxygen saturation during feeds were higher when oral stimulation was added to nonnutritive sucking and tube feeding in a newborn with cri du chat syndrome. This is a single case, not evidence the method works.
- SLPOther2018A Tipping Point in Listening Effort: Effects of Linguistic Complexity and Age-Related Hearing Loss on Sentence Comprehension.Trends in hearingOlder adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss understood complex sentences less accurately, especially when the doer and action were far apart. Because several treatments were given together, the robot alone cannot be credited.
- Other2018Integrated genome-wide Alu methylation and transcriptome profiling analyses reveal novel epigenetic regulatory networks associated with autism spectrum disorder.Molecular autismOverall Alu methylation and expression did not differ in autism blood cells, but altered autism genes were associated with Alu repeats, and subgroup differences appeared in small groups.
- Other2018Establishing dimensionality of sexual behaviours in patients with regional brain dysfunction.Brain injuryCaregiver ratings of sexual changes in 151 patients with brain injury or dementia separated into three usable domains: prosocial behaviour, inappropriate behaviour, and sexual interest. The detachment domain and several items were too sparse to use.
- Other2018Botulinum Toxin Conditioning Enhances Motor Axon Regeneration in Mouse and Human Preclinical Models.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairInjecting Botox into muscle one week before nerve injury sped up early axon regrowth in mice and human stem cell models. This preclinical finding suggests a potential future role for Botox in nerve transfer surgery, but it is not yet a proven therapy for patients.
- SLPOther2018Implicit learning seems to come naturally for children with autism, but not for children with specific language impairment: Evidence from behavioral and ERP data.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchChildren with autism learned hidden sequences as quickly as typical children. Children with specific language impairment responded as quickly, but brain responses suggested effortful, controlled learning instead.

Participants in the intervention group showed large, clinically meaningful improvements in community participation and daily activity performance at six months compared to an education-only control group.
- SLPSurvey2018Epidemiology and Impact of Health Care Provider-Diagnosed Anxiety and Depression Among US Children.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPDiagnosed anxiety in US children rose significantly from 2007 to 2012, but depression did not. Many children with these diagnoses still lack a medical home or care coordination. This suggests a need to screen for anxiety in children with other conditions and improve care navigation.
- SLPOther2018Can you spot a liar? Deception, mindreading, and the case of autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAdults with ASD were less accurate at spotting lies, even when speakers gave clear cues. In adults without an ASD diagnosis, more autistic traits were linked to poorer lie detection, but mindreading tests did not explain this.
- PTOTSLPPilot2018Impact of sleep on executive functioning in school-age children with Down syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRParents reporting restless sleep in children with Down syndrome also reported more trouble with impulse control, shifting, and working memory. Teachers noted impulse issues too. However, sleep problems did not predict actual performance on cognitive tests.

- SLPSystematic Review2018The Pupil Dilation Response to Auditory Stimuli: Current State of Knowledge.Trends in hearingPupil dilation grows when sound is louder, speech is harder to understand, language is more complex, or material is harder to remember. It can shrink when the task becomes too difficult, so it is not a simple effort score.
- SLPOther2018Effect of Hearing Aid Directionality and Remote Microphone on Speech Intelligibility in Complex Listening Situations.Trends in hearingDirectional hearing aid microphones plus remote microphone were better than omnidirectional microphones plus remote microphone for lab speech understanding in complex tests in 15 experienced hearing aid users, especially when switching between near and far talkers. Performance was also better after remote microphone use.
- OTRCT2018A Cognitive Occupation-Based Programme for People with Multiple Sclerosis: A Study to Test Feasibility and Clinical Outcomes.Occupational therapy internationalGoal achievement improved after a 9-week occupation-based cognitive programme for 12 people with MS. Some memory and attention scores also improved. The pilot had no control group, so it cannot show the programme caused the gains.
