OT Systematic Review 2016 Analysis approaches and interventions with occupational performance. Journal of physical therapy science Most research on stroke interventions targets physical recovery using the biomechanical approach, especially constraint-induced therapy. Few studies evaluate client-centered or top-down methods like CO-OP, which are harder to test in large randomized trials. PT OT SLP RCT 2016 Effect of task-oriented training and high-variability practice on gross motor performance and activities of daily living in children with spastic diplegia. Journal of physical therapy science Adding task-oriented or high-variability practice to standard treatment improved gross motor skills and daily living independence in children with spastic diplegia. High-variability practice also improved cognition, while task-oriented training did not. PT OT Case-Control 2017 Effectiveness of robotic-assisted gait training in stroke rehabilitation: A retrospective matched control study. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Adding RAGT to traditional physiotherapy did not produce a larger gain in daily living independence than traditional physiotherapy alone. It was associated with larger gains in walking, mobility, and balance. PT OT Survey 2016 Study on the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science Quality of life in children with cerebral palsy was linked to mental function, pain, movement, self-care, school and social participation, and environmental barriers. These are daily-life and environment factors, not only movement. PT OT Other 2016 Effects of community-based rehabilitation program on activities of daily living and cognition in elderly chronic stroke survivors. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults with chronic stroke who took part in a monthly community rehabilitation program combining exercise and crafts improved in daily activities and cognition. Only eleven finished, and there was no control group. PT OT SLP Other 2016 The effects a respiration rehabilitation program on IADL, satisfaction with leisure, and quality of sleep of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Journal of physical therapy science Twenty patients with COPD completed a 12-week breathing rehabilitation program. Scores for instrumental activities of daily living, leisure satisfaction, and sleep quality all improved after the intervention, though this was a small, uncontrolled study. PT OT Other 2016 Factors affecting the quality of life of homebound elderly hemiparetic stroke patients with cognitive impairment. Journal of physical therapy science For homebound older stroke patients with cognitive impairment, higher quality of life scores went with better cognition and greater daily independence. Age, sex, and care level showed no clear link. PT OT Other 2016 Analysis of affected and non-affected sides of stroke hemiparalysis patients and correlations between rehabilitation therapy assessments using the bioelectrical impedance analysis method. Journal of physical therapy science In 20 stroke patients with hemiplegia, a body electrical measure called phase angle was lower on the paralyzed side and tracked grip strength, hand dexterity, and daily activity independence. Another body electrical measure was also lower, but the resistance measure did not differ. PT OT Other 2016 Does the Q - H index show a stronger relationship than the H:Q ratio in regard to knee pain during daily activities in patients with knee osteoarthritis? Journal of physical therapy science Lower knee extension strength and a smaller gap between knee extension and flexion strength were linked to more pain in 78 women with knee osteoarthritis. The hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio was not. PT OT Cohort 2016 The progression of disability among older adults in Mexico. Disability and rehabilitation In older Mexican adults, disability progression differed by gender. Men followed the expected pattern of mobility, then IADL, then ADL decline. Women showed a reversed pattern, with ADL difficulties appearing before IADL difficulties. Social support was linked to higher disability in women, not men. PT OT RCT 2017 Return to Work in Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: Multidisciplinary Intervention Versus Brief Intervention: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation A comprehensive multidisciplinary intervention did not increase full return to work at 12 or 24 months compared to a brief intervention. However, patients in the multidisciplinary group returned to partial work significantly faster during the first seven months. OT RCT 2017 Process Evaluation of a Participatory Supportive Return to Work Program for Workers Without a Permanent Employment Contract, Sick-Listed Due to a Common Mental Disorder. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Only 36 of 94 randomized workers started the return-to-work program. While most steps were completed, fidelity was low due to delays, and only two workers secured suitable competitive jobs. PT OT RCT 2016 Skilled Bimanual Training Drives Motor Cortex Plasticity in Children With Unilateral Cerebral Palsy. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair In children with unilateral cerebral palsy, 90 hours of structured bimanual skill training enlarged hand movement areas in the brain and strengthened muscle responses to brain stimulation. Unstructured play did not. Both groups improved hand function similarly. PT OT Pilot 2017 H-GRASP: the feasibility of an upper limb home exercise program monitored by phone for individuals post stroke. Disability and rehabilitation In 6 of 8 people post stroke who finished a home arm exercise program with weekly phone calls, arm function, use, strength and self-perceived performance improved. Retention and adherence were below target, and no control group limits interpretation. OT Qualitative 2017 Women with Neck Pain on Long-Term Sick Leave-Approaches Used in the Return to Work Process: A Qualitative Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Women with neck pain on long-term sick leave described alternating work and leave to cope. Some used this as a strategy; others did it because stakeholders decided, leaving them little control. PT OT RCT 2017 A low cost virtual reality system for home based rehabilitation of the arm following stroke: a randomised controlled feasibility trial. Clinical rehabilitation The home glove system, with usual care, therapist setup and support, did not significantly improve the primary arm function test after eight weeks. Recruitment was so low that a definitive trial would need many more participants, and the system required substantial therapist support. PT OT Other 2017 Effects of gross motor function and manual function levels on performance-based ADL motor skills of children with spastic cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science Children with mild to moderate spastic cerebral palsy classified at GMFCS or MACS Level III had lower ADL motor skill scores on real tasks than Level I children, especially during dressing, shoe donning, and cereal preparation. PT OT Survey 2017 Safety and walking ability of KAFO users with the C-Brace® Orthotronic Mobility System, a new microprocessor stance and swing control orthosis. Prosthetics and orthotics international Thirteen knee orthosis users reported a microprocessor knee orthosis, given with fitting and training, was easier and safer than previous orthoses for many daily activities, especially mobility, stairs, ramps and uneven ground. Dressing and hygiene did not improve. PT OT Other 2016 Comparing Comorbidity Indices to Predict Post-Acute Rehabilitation Outcomes in Older Adults. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Five standard comorbidity indices added almost no predictive value for discharge function or community return in older rehab patients. Admission functional status and demographics explained most variance, suggesting clinicians should prioritize current ability over diagnosis lists. OT Other 2017 Sensory and repetitive behaviors among children with autism spectrum disorder at home. Autism : the international journal of research and practice In children's homes, negative reactions to sounds, sights and touch clustered in care routines and family-initiated tasks. Sensory seeking clustered in free play and child-led moments. Repetitive behavior looked similar but was not confirmed, and hyporesponsive behavior was too rare. PT OT Cohort 2016 Inpatient Walking Activity to Predict Readmission in Older Adults. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In older inpatients, lower average daily hospital steps were associated with higher 30-day readmission risk. This observational finding does not prove that increasing walking would reduce readmissions. OT Other 2017 Activities of daily living and manual hand dexterity in persons with idiopathic parkinson disease. Journal of physical therapy science In 25 people with mild-to-moderate Parkinson’s disease, better hand dexterity on the less affected side was linked to greater independence in daily activities. This association was stronger than for the more affected side. OT SLP Cohort 2017 Assessing chronic stroke survivors with aphasia sheds light on prevalence of spatial neglect. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Functional observation found mild neglect in five of 40 chronic left-brain stroke survivors with aphasia, but paper-and-pencil testing found none, and mobility or independence did not differ reliably. OT RCT 2017 Beyond Return to Work: The Effect of Multimorbidity on Work Functioning Trajectories After Sick Leave due to Common Mental Disorders. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Multimorbidity did not predict overall work functioning trajectory after return to work for common mental disorders. Only 12% improved, and in that group each extra multimorbidity point lowered scores by 1.4 points on the 0 to 100 scale. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2017 The Canadian occupational performance measure for patients with stroke: a systematic review. Journal of physical therapy science The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) shows good reliability in stroke patients but correlates poorly with standard assessments. It captures unique patient goals but requires adequate communication skills, so use it alongside other measures, not alone. PT OT Cohort 2017 Patient Satisfaction and Prognosis for Functional Improvement and Deterioration, Institutionalization, and Death Among Medicare Beneficiaries Over 2 Years. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Medicare beneficiaries in the top quartile for satisfaction with access to care were less likely to functionally deteriorate, be institutionalized, or die over two years. High satisfaction with care coordination was linked to lower institutionalization risk only. PT OT Other 2017 Hip, knee, and ankle kinematics during activities of daily living: a cross-sectional study. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Healthy adults used far more hip and knee motion for self-care than for walking or stairs. Crouching and getting out of the bath required up to 101 degrees of hip flexion and 149 degrees of knee flexion, exceeding typical post-surgery limits. PT OT Survey 2017 Using the World Health Organization's Disability Assessment Schedule (2) to assess disability in community-dwelling stroke patients. The South African journal of physiotherapy Community stroke survivors 6 to 12 months after stroke reported severe to extreme difficulty walking long distances, self-care, household tasks and community participation. No demographic group showed a clear pattern of participation restrictions. OT Other 2017 Perception of Life as Stressful, Not Biological Response to Stress, is Associated with Greater Social Disability in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability reported more everyday stress and stressful life events than matched volunteers. Their perceived stress, not most biological stress responses, tracked with greater social disability. This is association, not proof stress causes disability. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Disability Stages and Trouble Getting Needed Health Care Among Medicare Beneficiaries. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Medicare beneficiaries with greater activity limitations reported significantly more trouble accessing needed health care. Financial barriers were the most common reason overall, while transportation and home health care difficulties were especially cited by those with more severe physical limitations. OT Survey 2017 Disability stage and receipt of recommended care among elderly medicare beneficiaries. Disability and health journal Older Medicare beneficiaries with the most severe activity limitations received recommended care much less often, especially after hospitalization: 43% versus 76% for those with no limitations. Therapists should ask whether severely limited patients missed follow-up and preventive care. PT OT Other 2017 Validation of the shoulder36 for the activities of daily living with shoulder disorders. Journal of physical therapy science Shoulder36 scores tracked closely with QuickDASH scores for most shoulder disability domains. Patients completed it easily, but the sports domain was not validated well in this small group. OT Cohort 2017 Activity Limitation Stages Are Associated With Risk of Hospitalization Among Medicare Beneficiaries. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Higher ADL and IADL limitation stages were associated with higher risk of a first hospitalization in the next year among older Medicare beneficiaries living in the community. Baseline stage was not associated with second, third, or fourth hospitalizations. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2017 Traumatic brain injury caregivers: A qualitative analysis of spouse and parent perspectives on quality of life. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Parents describe returning to parenting a child and fear for the future, while partners report losing intimacy and the stress of making decisions alone. Both groups feel isolated and overwhelmed. These distinct burdens mean you should assess parents and spouses separately rather than treating all caregivers as one group. OT SLP Qualitative 2017 The meaning of participation for children in Malawi: insights from children and caregivers. Child: care, health and development Rural Malawian children and carers described participation as helping at home, chatting and playing. Children with disabilities were often kept near home, not expected to do chores, and faced barriers from community attitudes and parents who denied them chances. OT RCT 2016 Benefits of virtual reality based cognitive rehabilitation through simulated activities of daily living: a randomized controlled trial with stroke patients. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Stroke patients who used virtual reality daily living tasks improved more on a global cognitive test than patients doing conventional paper tasks. The study was small, and assessors knew which treatment was given. Use it as a signal, not proof. PT OT Cohort 2017 Does Corticospinal Tract Connectivity Influence the Response to Intensive Bimanual Therapy in Children With Unilateral Cerebral Palsy? Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Corticospinal tract pattern did not predict who improved more after intensive bimanual therapy, with lower extremity training at one site. Children with ipsilateral and contralateral patterns improved similarly on several hand function and daily activity measures. PT OT RCT 2017 Does Task-Specific Training Improve Upper Limb Performance in Daily Life Poststroke? Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Task-specific training did not increase upper limb use in daily life for 78 people with chronic stroke, despite improvements in clinic capacity. Neither the amount of practice nor gains in test scores predicted better real-world performance. Clinic gains did not carry over to home. OT Cohort 2017 Functional Goals and Predictors of Their Attainment in Low-Income Community-Dwelling Older Adults. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Low-income older adults fully attained 73.5% of their home-based functional goals. Attainment was higher for transferring and stairs, but lower for walking and community tasks. Participants were more likely to succeed if they were ready to change, had severe pain, or had home hazards. PT OT Other 2017 Exercising daily living activities in robot-mediated therapy. Journal of physical therapy science Chronic post-stroke patients showed better arm movement, grip function and independence scores after six weeks of robot-assisted daily-living training; spasticity did not change and Barthel Index did not clearly improve. PT OT Survey 2017 Interrelationship among the health-related and subjective quality of life, daily life activities, instrumental activities of daily living of community-dwelling elderly females in orthopedic outpatients. Journal of physical therapy science In older women attending orthopedic clinics, less pain, better general health, more energy, better social life, and better mental health went with greater happiness. Happiness did not track daily activity or practical independence. Physical function tracked daily and practical activities, and energy tracked practical activities. PT OT Cohort 2017 Predictive validity of the functional independence and difficulty scale in community-dwelling Japanese older adults. Journal of physical therapy science In community-dwelling Japanese older adults who were independent in basic activities, lower scores on the Functional Independence and Difficulty Scale predicted future decline in instrumental activities and multiple falls. The Barthel Index did not predict these outcomes. PT OT Case Report 2017 Effects of daily living occupational therapy and resistance exercise on the activities of daily living and muscular fitness in Guillain-Barré syndrome: a case study. Journal of physical therapy science After 12 weeks of combined daily living occupational therapy and elastic band resistance exercise, a man with Guillain-Barré syndrome increased his independence score from 54 to 79 points and showed higher muscle strength. This describes a case, not a proven treatment. PT OT Case Report 2017 Improved functional independence measure facilitates return to home after paralyzed upper-limb training: a case report. Journal of physical therapy science The FIM score rose from 71 to 105 in one stroke patient who received occupational therapy, affected upper-limb training, physiotherapy, and a fixed walker with knee support over four months. She returned home. This is one person, not proof the package works. OT RCT 2017 The effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on depression, visual perception, and activities of daily living in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science The rTMS group had lower depression scores and higher visual perception and ADL scores over 4 weeks, but the control group also improved by week 8. All 44 stroke patients with unilateral neglect also received conventional rehabilitation, so rTMS was not shown to work alone. PT OT Other 2017 The effects of training using EMG biofeedback on stroke patients upper extremity functions. Journal of physical therapy science Adding EMG biofeedback to traditional stroke rehabilitation did not clearly improve upper-limb or independence scores beyond traditional rehabilitation alone in 30 chronic stroke outpatients. OT Other 2017 Quantification of task-dependent cortical activation evoked by robotic continuous wrist joint manipulation in chronic hemiparetic stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation After stroke, people with severe sensory impairment had reduced brain responses to robotic wrist movement. People with mild impairment showed reduced responses during active wrist tasks. The findings describe sensory pathway damage, not treatment benefit. OT Cohort 2017 Perceived social support moderates the relationship between activities of daily living and depression after lower limb loss. Rehabilitation psychology In 73 people after lower-limb amputation, those who found daily activities difficult had higher depression at 12 months when they also had low social support. The study did not test whether increasing support reduces depression. PT OT Qualitative 2016 How Therapists Use Visualizations of Upper Limb Movement Information From Stroke Patients: A Qualitative Study With Simulated Information. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Therapists saw simulated arm-movement dashboards as useful for checking home activity, exercise, and neglect, engaging patients, and advocating for resources. They also said the data lacked context needed to tell whether movements were exercises, daily tasks, or compensations. OT Other 2017 Counting Grasping Action Using Force Myography: An Exploratory Study With Healthy Individuals. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies In 10 healthy people, wrist and forearm force-sensing straps told whether the hand was grasping or not with high accuracy, and counted grasps during controlled pick-and-place tasks. It was not tested in stroke or weak-arm rehabilitation. ← Previous PAGE 4 OF 22 Next →
