PT OT Cohort 2017 The Association Between Activity Limitation Stages and Admission to Facilities Providing Long-term Care Among Older Medicare Beneficiaries. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older Medicare beneficiaries with mild activity limitations were more likely to enter long-term care within a year. Risk rose with stage, and any ADL or IADL limitation was associated with higher risk. OT Qualitative 2017 Opportunities and barriers for successful return to work after acquired brain injury: A patient perspective. Work (Reading, Mass.) Ten people with acquired brain injury who had returned to work described individually adapted rehabilitation, balanced motivation, and understanding of cognitive and social needs as important. Barriers included fatigue, memory problems, low self-esteem, and unhelpful workplace attitudes. OT Other 2016 Tactile Perception for Stroke Induce Changes in Electroencephalography. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Active touch raised brain-wave activity more than passive touch in people with left-hemisphere stroke, especially right prefrontal and parietal areas. Right-hemisphere stroke showed no clear difference. This was a brain-wave lab finding, not a functional outcome. OT Other 2016 Reliability and Validity of the Activity Participation Assessment for School-age Children in Korea. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT A 38-item Korean questionnaire about how often school-age children do home, school, social, sport, and self-care tasks was stable over 2 weeks. Parents reported lower participation for children with intellectual disability than for nondisabled children. It may guide OT conversations, not prove treatment benefit. OT Qualitative 2017 Qualitative Experience of Sleep in Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury. OTJR : occupation, participation and health People with spinal cord injury described poor sleep linked to pain, positioning, pressure-ulcer care, bladder routines, medications, environment and anxiety. They also connected it to daytime fatigue and missed valued activities. OT Narrative Review 2017 An Ecological Framework to Support Small-Scale Shared Housing for Persons with Neurocognitive Disorders of the Alzheimer's and Related Types: A Literature Review. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Small-scale shared housing often showed better quality of life, daily activity, social engagement, and less physical restraint use than traditional long-term care. Cognitive results were mixed, and no study proved the housing model works better. OT Other 2017 Assessment of unilateral neglect in stroke: Simplification and structuring of test items. The British journal of occupational therapy In stroke inpatients with known neglect, structured feeding, dressing, item location, and cancellation tasks showed little neglect, while naturalistic observation captured neglect. Simplifying and structuring tasks may let patients compensate, so use occupation-based observation. OT Other 2017 Test-Retest Reliability of a Measure of Independence in Everyday Activities: The ADL Profile. Occupational therapy international The ADL Profile produced stable scores when the same therapist retested 20 people with severe TBI. Three community tasks were less stable, so a better score on those tasks may not mean change. OT Case Series 2017 Parent Training Occupational Therapy Program for Parents of Children with Autism in Korea. Occupational therapy international In four Korean families, parents reported changes of more than 2-point gains on 10-point performance and satisfaction scores after five months of occupational therapy plus parent training. Parents also felt stigmatized and wanted therapist direction. PT OT Qualitative 2017 Developing the content of a locomotor disability scale for adults in Bangladesh: a qualitative study. Archives of physiotherapy Interviews with adults with mobility impairments in Bangladesh produced a 70-item locomotor disability scale covering mobility, self-care, work and leisure. It adds local activities and definitions to reduce misinterpretation. PT OT RCT 2017 Effects of Inpatient Multicomponent Occupational Rehabilitation versus Less Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation on Somatic and Mental Health: Secondary Outcomes of a Randomized Clinical Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation The main outcome, sickness absence, showed no difference between the inpatient and outpatient programs. Health outcomes showed no substantial difference. PT OT Pilot 2017 Evaluation of the Glittre-ADL test as an instrument for classifying functional capacity of individuals with cardiovascular diseases. Brazilian journal of physical therapy In 42 adults with cardiovascular disease, Glittre ADL test times differed across groups defined by walking and activity questionnaire scores. It may add daily task information to walking tests. Normal values are unknown. OT Other 2017 Relationship of health, sociodemographic, and economic factors and life satisfaction in young-old and old-old elderly: a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. Journal of physical therapy science Among Korean adults aged 65 or older, lower life satisfaction was associated with depression, cognitive impairment, more daily dependence, less education, less family contact, lower assets, and Medical Aid. For those 80+, age and one kind of social activity were associated; chronic disease was not. OT Case Report 2017 Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with blindsight rehabilitation for the treatment of homonymous hemianopia: a report of two-cases. Journal of physical therapy science Two chronic homonymous hemianopia patients had larger gains on visual field tests during rounds when blindsight training was paired with anodal tDCS than during training-only rounds. This is a two-case report, so it cannot show tDCS worked. PT OT Other 2018 Reliability of upper limb and trunk joint angles in healthy adults during activities of daily living. Gait & posture Daily-task motion capture was more consistent for shoulder and elbow angles than for wrist or trunk angles in 19 healthy right-handed adults. Repeated movements within one session varied less than measurements across two sessions. Choose tasks by the joint you need to measure. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 Systematic Review of Prognostic Factors for Return to Work in Workers with Sub Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain. Journal of occupational rehabilitation For workers with subacute or chronic low back pain, pain intensity and function do not predict return to work. Instead, delay in referral, attorney involvement, workers compensation issues, lower socioeconomic status, and poor recovery expectations predict delayed return. PT OT Cohort 2017 A Return-to-Work Prognostic Model for Orthopaedic Trauma Patients (WORRK) Updated for Use at 3, 12 and 24 Months. Journal of occupational rehabilitation The WORRK model can predict return-to-work status at 3 and 12 months after orthopaedic trauma if its intercept is updated. It correctly identifies non-returners with moderate accuracy, helping clinicians tailor rehabilitation intensity earlier in the recovery process. OT Cohort 2017 Work Characteristics and Return to Work in Long-Term Sick-Listed Employees with Depressive Symptoms. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Employees with depressive symptoms on long-term sick leave returned to full work about 30 days later at 1 year and over 50 days later at 2 years. Higher return-to-work confidence predicted earlier return; most job demands and resources did not. OT Survey 2018 Assistive technology unmet needs of independent living older Hispanics with functional limitations. Disability and rehabilitation. Assistive technology Older Puerto Ricans with functional limitations often owned glasses, pill organizers, canes, hand showers, and grab bars. They most wanted jar openers, seat lifts, and wheeled laundry baskets. Many rejected electronic devices. Willingness to use devices was higher with more conditions and lower income. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Predictive Indices for Functional Improvement and Deterioration, Institutionalization, and Death Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation A new scoring system predicts which Medicare patients aged 65 or older will deteriorate, be institutionalized, or die within two years. It identifies risk factors like advanced age, living alone, and vision impairment to help clinicians plan care and prevent poor outcomes. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Passive prosthetic hands and tools: A literature review. Prosthetics and orthotics international Passive prostheses are used by about one in three potential users, mostly for appearance and comfort, not just as a step toward active devices. They offer limited but sufficient function for many daily tasks. Research should focus on adjustable hands and tools for work and sports. PT OT RCT 2018 Associations Between the Readiness for Return to Work Scale and Return to Work: A Prospective Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation A single question asking how long a patient expects to be sick-listed predicted return to work better than the full Readiness for Return to Work scale. High scores on 'Prepared for action' predicted success, but the scale's stage allocation method failed due to tied scores. PT OT RCT 2018 Effect of Inpatient Multicomponent Occupational Rehabilitation Versus Less Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation on Sickness Absence in Persons with Musculoskeletal- or Mental Health Disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation For adults on sick leave with musculoskeletal, psychological or unspecific disorders, a 4+4 day inpatient multicomponent program did not reduce sickness absence more than a less comprehensive outpatient program. The outpatient program looked similar, not clearly better. PT OT Pilot 2017 Participation in physical activities for children with cerebral palsy: feasibility and effectiveness of physical activity on prescription. Archives of physiotherapy All 11 children improved in their chosen physical activities, and families accepted the programme. Accelerometer activity did not rise for every child, and two children's total activity fell. PT OT Other 2018 The effects of a client-centered leisure activity program on satisfaction, self-esteem, and depression in elderly residents of a long-term care facility. Journal of physical therapy science Residents who received usual activities plus chosen individual leisure activities and elastic-band group exercise showed better performance and satisfaction, higher self-esteem, lower depression, and better upper-limb function. In the control group, upper-limb, self-esteem, and depression outcomes did not change significantly. PT OT Other 2018 Design and development of the first exoskeletal garment to enhance arm mobility for children with movement impairments. Assistive technology : the official journal of RESNA A soft exoskeletal garment was designed for one child with arthrogryposis to lift his arms. It cost $10 in materials and allowed 90-degree arm lift without blocking other shoulder movement. Parents found it easy to use but initially wanted it to look more like normal clothing. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Functional Status Is Associated With 30-Day Potentially Preventable Hospital Readmissions After Inpatient Rehabilitation Among Aged Medicare Fee-for-Service Beneficiaries. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Patients with greater independence in self-care, mobility, and cognition at discharge had lower odds of 30-day potentially preventable readmission. Those in the highest functional quartiles had 30% to 36% lower adjusted odds than those in the lowest quartiles. OT SLP Case Series 2018 Feasibility of a cognitive strategy training intervention for people with Parkinson's disease. Disability and rehabilitation Seven people with Parkinson's and subjective cognitive decline found a home-based strategy training intervention feasible and satisfying. They reported clinically important improvements in self-identified functional problems, but this case series cannot prove the treatment works. OT RCT 2018 The effects of modified constraint-induced movement therapy and mirror therapy on upper extremity function and its influence on activities of daily living. Journal of physical therapy science After three weeks, acute stroke inpatients given mirror therapy or mCIMT plus ADL training and self-exercise showed no significant between-group difference in arm function or ADL independence. In the mCIMT group, arm gains went with eating and dressing gains. OT Other 2018 Cross-cultural adaptation and construct validity of the Korean version of a physical activity measure for community-dwelling elderly. Journal of physical therapy science The Korean physical activity measure ranked community-dwelling elders' daily tasks from easy to hard and matched elders with lower and moderate ability, but it topped out for some high-ability people. PT OT Other 2018 Measurement Properties of the Modified Spinal Function Sort (M-SFS): Is It Reliable and Valid in Workers with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain? Journal of occupational rehabilitation In 62 workers with chronic musculoskeletal pain, the 20-item Modified Spinal Function Sort stayed similar over at least 2 days and related to the original 50-item version, pain disability, pain and lifting tests. It gives a brief picture-based estimate of perceived work capacity. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for improving capacity in activities and arm function after stroke: a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Cathodal tDCS improved activities of daily living in stroke patients, but no tDCS type improved arm function. Safety profiles were similar across all stimulation types and controls. Clinicians should not expect tDCS to restore arm movement based on this evidence. PT OT RCT 2018 Return to Work in Employees on Sick Leave due to Neck or Shoulder Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Multidisciplinary and Brief Intervention with One-Year Register-Based Follow-Up. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Adding a case manager and multidisciplinary team to a brief clinical examination did not improve return to work rates for employees on sick leave with neck or shoulder pain. Both groups had similar outcomes at one year, suggesting the brief intervention was sufficient. PT OT Other 2017 Reorganization of finger coordination patterns through motor exploration in individuals after stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Stroke survivors got faster at a cursor task and showed wider free finger movement after training, but the main finger pattern did not change more from the first to the last training session. There was no control group. PT OT Qualitative 2018 Falls in people with multiple sclerosis: experiences of 115 fall situations. Clinical rehabilitation People with multiple sclerosis described falls as happening indoors during everyday tasks, often when MS symptoms fluctuated, fatigue or distraction reduced attention. Walking aids were often involved, sometimes used as usual but not enough support, and sometimes not used as intended. OT Pilot 2018 The effects of an occupation-centered cognitive rehabilitation program on elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment. Journal of physical therapy science In six older women with mild cognitive impairment, after the combined handicraft and reminiscence program, cognitive test scores did not improve enough to be counted as a real change, but instrumental daily living scores and an EEG attention measure increased. OT Case Series 2018 The influences of client-centered therapy on the level of performance, the level of satisfaction of activity of daily living, and the quality of life of the chronic stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Two chronic stroke patients had improved COPM performance and satisfaction and higher SS-QOL after 4 weeks of client-centered occupational therapy. With only two participants and no control group, this cannot show the therapy caused the improvement. OT SLP RCT 2017 Effect of Caregiver Training on the Neurodevelopment of HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children and Caregiver Mental Health: A Ugandan Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Caregiver cognitive-stimulation training did not improve overall child development compared with health and nutrition training. All children received nutrition support. It worsened reported executive function problems and caregiver depression. OT Pilot 2017 Wireless intraoral tongue control of an assistive robotic arm for individuals with tetraplegia. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A person with tetraplegia used a tongue interface and robotic arm system to touch a tape roll in 100% of attempts and lift it in 50%. This is a small demonstration, not evidence it works for daily life. PT OT RCT 2018 Effect of physical activity on cognition and daily living activities of the elderly with mild dementia. Journal of physical therapy science Adding 30-minute strength and balance exercises to cognitive training improved cognition and daily function more than cognitive training alone in 60 older adults with mild dementia. Both groups also received cognitive training. PT OT Other 2017 Effects of virtual reality intervention on upper limb motor function and activity of daily living in patients with lesions in different regions of the brain. Journal of physical therapy science After 4 weeks of VR games, upper-limb and daily-living scores were higher in 14 people with hemiplegic stroke. With no control group, these gains cannot be proven to be from VR. PT OT Cohort 2017 Hypervigilance to pain affects activities of daily living: an examination using the Japanese version of the pain vigilance awareness questionnaire. Journal of physical therapy science In 50 elderly patients with chronic pain, hypervigilance and pain intensity were the only factors significantly linked to disability. Anxiety, depression, fear of movement, and catastrophizing did not independently predict daily living limitations. PT OT Other 2017 The effect of group exercise program on the self-efficacy and activities of daily living in adults with cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science In adults with cerebral palsy, a 6-week group program combining boccia, range-of-motion, stretching, massage and breathing improved confidence in doing tasks and activities of daily living more than range-of-motion and stretching alone. Boccia alone cannot be credited. PT OT Cohort 2017 Relationship between psychophysiological factors and prognosis for activities of daily living in patients with stroke in a recovery rehabilitation unit: a preliminary study. Journal of physical therapy science At admission, worse motor paralysis and higher depression scores were associated with poorer daily living function 2 months later in 13 stroke patients in a rehabilitation unit. This does not show that treating these problems improves daily living. PT OT Other 2017 The effect of fluidotherapy on hand dexterity and activities of daily living in patients with edema on stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Three weeks of fluidotherapy significantly reduced hand edema in stroke patients and improved daily living independence, but did not significantly improve hand dexterity. The study had no control group, so natural recovery cannot be ruled out. OT Other 2017 Assessing the adjustability of grasping force using the iWakka in elderly individuals. Journal of physical therapy science When older adults repeated the same grasping force task on the iWakka, their first and second scores shifted by a consistent small amount, but the error did not grow with larger targets. PT OT Pilot 2018 Upper limb robotic rehabilitation for chronic stroke survivors: a single-group preliminary study. Journal of physical therapy science After six weeks of assist-as-needed arm robot training, 21 high-functioning chronic stroke survivors had higher upper limb scores and faster reaching. No control group was used, so the robot alone cannot be credited. PT OT Other 2018 Effects of a 12-week marching in place and chair rise daily exercise intervention on ADL and functional mobility in frail older adults. Journal of physical therapy science Frail nursing home residents who marched in place and rose from a chair for 25 minutes daily for 12 weeks improved their ability to perform daily tasks and their walking speed. The exercise group also generated significantly more power when standing up. The non-exercise group showed no such gains. OT Systematic Review 2018 Patient-reported outcome measures for young people with developmental disabilities: incorporation of design features to reduce cognitive demands. Developmental medicine and child neurology The six self-report measures for young people with developmental disabilities varied in design features that reduce cognitive demands. Many had complex wording, unclear visuals, or few supports, so scores from them may not be fully trustworthy. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The Association of Clinic-Based Mobility Tasks and Measures of Community Performance and Risk. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Normal walking speed was the strongest predictor of community function and fall risk for most outcomes. Stair climbing time specifically identified those with balance confidence issues and past falls. Complex dual-task tests best captured engagement in cognitive leisure activities. ← Previous PAGE 5 OF 22 Next →
