PT OT Cohort 2018 Premorbid Activity Limitation Stages Are Associated With Posthospitalization Discharge Disposition. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults who had more difficulty before hospitalization were more likely to go to post-acute care facilities or home with services. Self-care and household-task limitation stages were linked to different patterns, so ask about both. OT Systematic Review 2018 At the intersection of chronic disease, disability and health services research: A scoping literature review. Disability and health journal Working age adults with chronic conditions and disability are defined inconsistently in health services research. Limits in daily tasks, not diagnosis alone, help identify people who need more care. PT OT Cohort 2018 Same But Different: FIM Summary Scores May Mask Variability in Physical Functioning Profiles. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Among Medicare inpatient rehabilitation discharges classified as needing no physical assistance by FIM summary scores, about one quarter still needed help on at least one item. Stairs, lower-body dressing, bathing, and tub transfers were common. PT OT Cohort 2018 Effect of the frequency of therapy on the performance of activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science Physical therapy frequency did not show significant differences in daily living skills. Intensive occupational therapy was associated with a significant overall daily living skill improvement compared with bimonthly therapy, and therapy frequency was correlated with mobility and social function. PT OT Other 2018 Quantification of upper limb position sense using an exoskeleton and a virtual reality display. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A robot and virtual arm let 30 healthy adults identify the smallest elbow angle differences of 7.0 and 5.9 degrees. Repeated scores were fair to good, but shifted slightly after one week, and only healthy adults were tested. PT OT Survey 2018 Occupation-based differences in shared perceptions of older resident needs within multidisciplinary care teams: a cross-sectional study of care workers, nurses, and therapists linked to older residents. Journal of physical therapy science Staff in Japanese care facilities disagreed with each other on what residents wanted. They also missed autonomy needs, underestimating desires for household chores, money management, and exercise. PT OT Cohort 2018 Changes in biopsychosocial outcomes for a mixed cohort of ICU survivors. The South African journal of physiotherapy Physical quality of life scores improved over 6 months among 24 ICU survivors. Muscle strength scores changed, while walking distance and mental health changed less clearly, and depression screening stayed mild. PT OT Other 2017 Community integration of adults with disabilities post discharge from an in-patient rehabilitation unit in the Western Cape. The South African journal of physiotherapy Adults 7 to 9 months after inpatient rehabilitation in South Africa had low community integration, especially work, recreation, social activities and mobility. The authors recommended targeting these areas. OT Systematic Review 2017 The optimal orthosis and motion protocol for extensor tendon injury in zones IV-VIII: A systematic review. Journal of hand therapy : official journal of the American Society of Hand Therapists Early active motion after proximal extensor tendon repair gave better early finger motion and grip strength than static immobilization. Immediate relative motion protocols returned patients to light duties around 3 weeks versus 9.4 weeks with static orthoses. OT RCT 2018 Activity-Based Goals Generated by Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment. OTJR : occupation, participation and health Older adults with mild cognitive impairment generated 55 activity-based goals with an occupational therapist, averaging 4.23 goals each. Most goals concerned instrumental daily tasks, especially exercise, not basic self-care, education, or work. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Difference in independent mobility improvement from admission to discharge between subacute stroke patients using knee-ankle-foot and those using ankle-foot orthoses. Journal of physical therapy science Patients prescribed knee-ankle-foot orthoses had smaller mobility improvements than those prescribed ankle-foot orthoses, but they also started with more severe impairments. The orthosis type alone did not cause the difference; initial severity and age were strong predictors of recovery. PT OT RCT 2018 Assisting hand function after spinal cord injury with a fabric-based soft robotic glove. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Nine people with spinal cord injuries lifted objects more successfully while wearing a soft robotic glove operated by a researcher. The glove improved hand function scores and lift force, but participants could not put it on themselves. PT OT Systematic Review 2018 The effects of error-augmentation versus error-reduction paradigms in robotic therapy to enhance upper extremity performance and recovery post-stroke: a systematic review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Error augmentation in robotic therapy improved movement quality more than standard practice, but gains did not reach the threshold for clinically meaningful change. Error reduction showed no clear benefit over standard practice. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2018 Everyday Activities for Children with Mitochondrial Disorder: A Retrospective Chart Review. Occupational therapy international Children with mitochondrial disorders across all functioning levels engaged in the same nine activity categories, from self-care to leisure. The difference was not what they did, but how: varying levels of assistance, adaptive devices, and energy management were required for participation. OT Qualitative 2018 Life-changing or trivial: Electricians' views about electrical accidents. Work (Reading, Mass.) Electricians described shocks as sometimes life-changing, with persistent fear, guilt and resentment, and said health care often ignored mental effects and follow-up. Workplace support and how the accident was handled mattered for work recovery. OT RCT 2018 Effects of modified constraint-induced movement therapy on upper extremity function and occupational performance of stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Adding modified constraint-induced movement therapy to standard rehab improved arm use and daily task performance in stroke patients. The standard rehab group alone showed little change. With only 14 participants, these results are preliminary and require confirmation in larger trials. PT OT Other 2018 An evaluation of the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of OccuPro's functional capacity evaluation. Work (Reading, Mass.) Trained examiners showed moderate to excellent agreement on OccuPro FCE subtests. Pinch agreement was moderate in injured upper-extremity patients, and material-handling agreement between different examiners was moderate to good in healthy students. OT Other 2018 Improving internal model strength and performance of prosthetic hands using augmented feedback. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Audio feedback added to a muscle-controlled prosthetic hand helped healthy users adapt more and complete more grasp-and-lift transfers without breaking the object. Speed did not change. It was a small lab test in able-bodied people, not amputees. OT Other 2018 Development of the Japanese version of the Westmead Home Safety Assessment for the elderly in Japan. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT A Japanese home safety checklist for older adults was best supported for 49 items, including stairs, seating, bathroom, bath, toilet, footwear, and floors. The full 71-item version was not fully supported, especially household tasks like laundry, cleaning, cooking, medication, and safety calls. OT Other 2018 Enhancing a Client-Centred Practice with the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Occupational therapy international The COPM interview seemed to help occupational therapists understand client priorities and set collaborative goals, but it appeared to do so only when therapists had strong communication skills, shared power, and supportive settings. OT Systematic Review 2018 Orthotic management of fixed flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint following traumatic injury: A systematic review. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT No orthosis type was shown to be better for post-traumatic PIPJ flexion contracture. Splint and exercise programmes improved motion, but the splint alone cannot be credited and studies were too varied to guide a choice. OT Pilot 2018 Engaging persons with disabilities as community teachers for experiential learning in occupational therapy education. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Occupational therapy students who took part in a programme with community teachers reported less anxiety and changed assumptions about what people with disabilities could do. Their attitudes improved after the programme, but there was no control group. OT Case Series 2017 Effect of Passive Limb Activation by Functional Electrical Stimulation on Wheelchair Driving in Patients with Unilateral Spatial Neglect: A Case Study. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Functional electrical stimulation to the affected forearm helped a stroke patient with left neglect drive farther during wheelchair practice, but did not help the other and did not last after stopping. OT Case Series 2018 Use of parametric speaker for older people with dementia in a residential care setting: A preliminary study of two cases. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT In two residents with dementia, a ceiling-mounted directional speaker playing favorite music reduced wandering and agitation only while the music was on. There was no lasting effect after the session ended, and no change in overall dementia stage. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The role of biopsychosocial factors in the rehabilitation process of individuals with a stroke. Work (Reading, Mass.) Patients who started rehab more than 16 weeks after stroke, had no family care support, or were single or widowed showed significantly less improvement in mobility and daily activities. Depression and low self-efficacy at admission also predicted poor outcomes. Younger age under 55 was unexpectedly linked to lower efficacy. OT Cohort 2019 The modifying effect of positive emotion on the relationship between cognitive impairment and disability among older Mexican Americans: a cohort study. Disability and rehabilitation Positive emotion did not change the link between cognitive impairment and new disability over time in older Mexican Americans. It did appear to narrow the gap in current disability between impaired and normal cognition. OT Other 2019 Characterising omission errors in everyday task completion and cognitive correlates in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Older adults with multi-domain mild cognitive impairment and dementia omitted more action steps in everyday tasks than healthy adults and those with single-domain MCI. Dementia also showed more preparatory and concluding omissions. Memory was linked to all omission types. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Determinants of Sickness Absence and Return to Work Among Employees with Common Mental Disorders: A Scoping Review. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Workers with anxiety or depression stay off work longer when they have high job demands, low control, and poor supervisor support. Treating symptoms alone does not guarantee a return to work. Workplace accommodations and managing expectations are essential for reintegration. PT OT Systematic Review 2018 Functional Impairments and Work-Related Outcomes in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Breast cancer survivors' physical problems, especially limited shoulder and arm movement, were linked to poorer work outcomes. Cognitive problems were reported by survivors but not consistently linked to work outcomes. Emotional issues affected work in interviews but not in measured outcomes. OT Survey 2019 User surveys support designing a prosthetic wrist that incorporates the Dart Thrower's Motion. Disability and rehabilitation. Assistive technology People with trans-radial prosthetic wrists reported lower satisfaction and higher difficulty with Dart Thrower's Motion tasks, and interviewees wanted a wrist that adds this motion even if it is more complex. OT Cohort 2018 Short-Term and Long-Term Outcomes of a Vocational Rehabilitation Program for Patients with Acquired Brain Injury in The Netherlands. Journal of occupational rehabilitation In a Dutch vocational rehabilitation program for acquired brain injury, 86% returned to useful employer tasks after 4 months. At 3 to 6 years, 64% of those still had paid work, averaging 26.5 hours weekly. PT OT Cohort 2018 Discharge Patterns for Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients Going From Acute Care Hospitals to Inpatient and Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Across 122,084 Medicare patients, discharge to intensive rehabilitation versus skilled nursing varied widely by hospital, not just by stroke severity. Patients sent to skilled nursing were older, female, and had more comorbidities and lower function. Hospital-level patterns drove these decisions more than clinical factors alone. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Factors Influencing Functional Outcomes and Return-to-Work After Amputation: A Review of the Literature. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Amputation recovery varies widely in walking, pain, prosthetic use, and work. Younger age, education, adjustment, prosthetic use, and job modifications were linked to return to work, not tested as causes. OT Cohort 2018 Predictors of Return to Work 6 Months After the End of Treatment in Patients with Common Mental Disorders: A Cohort Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation In patients with common mental disorders, high occupational status and better self-rated work ability at end of treatment were linked to successful return to work at 6 months. Work participation did not change over the follow-up. This does not show that treatment caused it. PT OT Pilot 2018 Can telerehabilitation games lead to functional improvement of upper extremities in individuals with Parkinson's disease? International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Parkinson's patients who played a home 'Fruit Picking' game for three weeks wrote letters and moved light objects faster, and scored better on hand dexterity and motor exams. No control group was used, so these gains cannot be separated from time or other factors. PT OT Cohort 2019 Psychosocial Comorbidities Related to Return to Work Rates Following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Older age and higher depression or anxiety scores predicted failure to return to work after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. State anxiety at three months was linked to not returning to work at twelve months. Screen for both mood and anxiety disorders to identify patients needing support. OT Cohort 2019 Population of Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury in Skilled Nursing Facilities: A Decade of Change. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation More people with TBI were admitted to U.S. skilled nursing facilities from 2005 to 2014. They were older, and fewer had severe functional or cognitive impairment. OT Survey 2018 Functional Impairments Associated With Patient Activation Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults with greater limitations in basic self-care or household tasks reported lower confidence managing their own care and poorer communication with doctors. Health information-seeking was less consistent, especially with basic self-care limitations. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Improvement During Inpatient Rehabilitation Among Older Adults With Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, and Stroke. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults with Guillain-Barré, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, or stroke all improved in self-care, mobility, and cognition during inpatient rehabilitation. Patients with Guillain-Barré showed the largest gains, followed by stroke, while those with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease made more modest but still meaningful progress. OT Other 2019 What Employer Actions Are Considered Most Important for the Return to Work of Employees with Cancer? A Delphi Study Among Employees and Employers. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Employers and employees with cancer independently ranked practical support, communication, emotional support, sufficient sick leave, work ability assessment, appreciation, and return-to-work planning among the most important supports, varying by phase. PT OT RCT 2019 Change in Depression, Confidence, and Physical Function Among Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Depression scores did not change clearly. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment in a meaningful activity program had short-term gains in confidence and community participation; gains did not persist at follow-up. PT OT Qualitative 2019 A qualitative study of patient-centered goal-setting in geriatric rehabilitation: patient and professional perspectives. Clinical rehabilitation Older patients in geriatric rehabilitation first aim for self-care and going home, then set more ambitious goals after discharge. Teams focused on discharge criteria. Long-term goals were often unrecorded. OT Qualitative 2019 Managing Employees Undergoing Total Hip and Knee Replacement: Experiences of Workplace Representatives. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Workplace representatives said they tried phased hours, modified duties, equipment changes, alternative roles and colleague support before and after hip or knee replacement. They also said lack of medical advice about restrictions and timelines made planning hard. PT OT Other 2018 Motor Impairment-Related Alterations in Biceps and Triceps Brachii Fascicle Lengths in Chronic Hemiparetic Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair In 11 people with chronic stroke, biceps and triceps muscle bundles in the paretic arm were shorter than the other arm at rest. More severe arm impairment was linked to greater relative shortening of the biceps than the triceps. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Course of Social Participation in the First 2 Years After Stroke and Its Associations With Demographic and Stroke-Related Factors. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Social participation did not simply improve after stroke. People increased work and household hours over two years while social and leisure activity decreased, and restrictions eased mostly in the first year. Older, lower-educated, and ADL-dependent patients showed worse courses. OT Other 2018 Relationship between frontal assessment battery scores and activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living ability in older adults. Journal of physical therapy science Higher FAB scores were strongly related to higher ADL/IADL functional age in 85 Japanese older adults. Mean FAB score was 9.1 points and mean functional age was 6.3 years, but this is association, not proof. PT OT Other 2018 Differences in activities of daily living between people with subacute stroke who received knee-ankle-foot and ankle-foot orthoses at admission. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke inpatients prescribed KAFO were more dependent in daily activities at admission than those prescribed AFO. Bed, chair and wheelchair transfer scores, lower-limb motor stage and total independence were linked to which orthosis was chosen. OT Other 2018 Identification of forearm skin zones with similar muscle activation patterns during activities of daily living. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Forearm skin zones with similar muscle electrical activity patterns were identified during hand tasks. Seven zones may represent forearm activity in simulated daily tasks. Six healthy subjects only. OT RCT 2019 Five-year follow-up of a cluster-randomized controlled trial of a client-centred activities of daily living intervention for people with stroke. Clinical rehabilitation Five years after stroke, a client-centred daily living intervention did not improve participants' perceived participation compared with usual daily living care. Their significant others had fewer depression signs, but this was not the main result. PT OT Other 2018 Differences in body awareness and its effects on balance function and independence in activities of daily living for stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke survivors with lower fall risk and less need for daily assistance reported higher body awareness. The study did not show that improving body awareness caused these differences. ← Previous PAGE 6 OF 22 Next →
