OT SLP Other 2018 Capturing Expert Knowledge for the Personalization of Cognitive Rehabilitation: Study Combining Computational Modeling and a Participatory Design Strategy. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies A free web tool can generate personalized paper-and-pencil cognitive tasks for people after stroke. It uses expert ratings of task demands, not patient outcomes, so it may help therapists choose tasks but does not show improved recovery. OT Cohort 2019 Use of a multilayer perceptron to create a prediction model for dressing independence in a small sample at a single facility. Journal of physical therapy science A neural-network model predicted which stroke patients would dress independently at discharge better than conventional models in 82 patients, but it was tested only at a single facility and not externally. OT SLP Pilot 2019 User activity recognition system to improve the performance of environmental control interfaces: a pilot study with patients. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In eight patients with neurological or spinal cord conditions, a prediction-assisted environment control interface let them complete more daily tasks in ten minutes than manual scanning. Users did not report lower workload. PT OT Other 2019 A study on the sleep quality, pain, and instrumental activities of daily living of outpatients with chronic stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Outpatients with chronic stroke who reported worse sleep and more pain had lower independence in daily tasks like grooming and shopping. These factors correlate with daily function, but the study cannot prove they cause the decline. PT OT Case Report 2019 Safety and efficacy of robotic elbow training using the upper limb single-joint hybrid assistive limb combined with conventional rehabilitation for bilateral obstetric brachial plexus injury with co-contraction: a case report. Journal of physical therapy science In an adult with brachial plexus injury and cocontraction, robot elbow training plus usual rehab was completed without serious adverse events. Some elbow motion, left elbow power, and right hand and self-reported function scores improved, while other measures did not. PT OT Cohort 2018 Stratification of stroke rehabilitation: Five-year profiles of functional outcomes. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Stroke rehab patients admitted who needed help or supervision to walk showed the biggest daily mobility and self-care gains. Those unable to sit, sitting but not walking, or already independent gained less per day. Admission walking level indicated likely discharge mobility. PT OT Other 2019 Medium-Term Outcomes of Digital Versus Conventional Home-Based Rehabilitation After Total Knee Arthroplasty: Prospective, Parallel-Group Feasibility Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Patients using a digital home-rehab system after knee replacement showed greater improvement in walking speed and knee motion at 3 and 6 months than those receiving standard physiotherapy. However, the digital group had more treatment hours, and the study was not randomized. PT OT Case Report 2019 A case of an elderly hip disarticulation amputee with rheumatoid arthritis who regained the ability to walk using a hip prosthesis. Journal of physical therapy science An elderly woman with rheumatoid arthritis and a hip amputation learned to walk with a hip prosthesis fitted with easier fastening. This is a single person's course, not evidence that the method works. OT Other 2019 Effects on activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living independence in patients with Alzheimer's disease when the main nursing caregiver consciously provides only minimal nursing care. Journal of physical therapy science In hospitalized patients with mild Alzheimer's disease, those whose main caregiver reported providing only minimal help were more independent in basic and instrumental daily living. In moderate disease, only instrumental independence was higher; severe disease was not tested. PT OT Pilot 2019 Age-related changes in postural control for wearing shoes using different process of leg-raising processes in the sitting position: a pilot study. Journal of physical therapy science Healthy older men moved their center of pressure farther and used more trunk and hip muscle effort than younger men when crossing a leg to put on shoes. The easiest, fastest way was lifting the leg slightly without hands. PT OT Cohort 2019 The items and level contributing to improve in less than 50 motor functional independence measure upon admission in the stroke recovery rehabilitation ward. Journal of physical therapy science In stroke rehab patients starting below 50 independence points, gains were linked to bathing, lower-body dressing, bladder management and stairs. These are associations from routine records, not a tested treatment effect. OT Other 2019 Kinematic synergies of hand grasps: a comprehensive study on a large publicly available dataset. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Healthy adults performing 20 hand grasps showed repeatable coordination patterns, especially finger flexion, wrist and palmar arch, and thumb opposition. These are a reference for hand rehabilitation and prosthetics, not proof a treatment works. OT RCT 2019 An augmented reality approach for ADL support in Alzheimer's disease: a crossover trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The augmented reality headset did not improve tea-making success: all patients succeeded without it and three failed with it, a difference not significant. Average time was 77.14s without it and 111.29s with it, and 60% called it bulky. OT Other 2019 Feasibility Study Using Propensity Score Matching Methods for the Pseudo-Common Person Equating Requirement. OTJR : occupation, participation and health Matching two groups on demographics did not make their daily living and physical function items behave like one ability. Average scores were similar, but how people answered was not, so this method cannot replace giving both tests to the same people. OT RCT 2018 Occupational Therapy in Complex Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. Occupational therapy international Client-centered OT added to standard care improved self-reported performance and satisfaction in complex rehabilitation patients. The study was unblinded, so therapists knew who got the extra treatment. This pilot shows the approach is feasible but does not prove it works better than standard care alone. OT Other 2019 Egocentric video: a new tool for capturing hand use of individuals with spinal cord injury at home. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A head-mounted video system detected hand-object interactions in nine people with cervical spinal cord injury. Its interaction counts and durations tracked human observer labels moderately well, but it was tested in a simulated lab, not real homes. OT Other 2018 Temporal differences in eye-hand coordination between children and adults during manual action on objects. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Eight-year-olds rely more on vision than adults when handling objects. They keep their eyes on the task longer because their touch-based feedback system is less developed. This suggests therapists should assess somatosensory processing, not just visual-motor skills, in children with coordination difficulties. OT Other 2018 Reliability and validity of the self-reported Activities of Daily Living Scale for people with mental illness. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT A shortened self-reported daily living scale appears to classify people with mental illness into four independence levels. It was not tested in severe illness, and six original items were dropped. OT Pilot 2018 Effect of occupation-based interventions in patients with haematopoietic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy: A pilot randomised controlled trial. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients with haematopoietic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy who received occupation-based therapy using the ADOC activity tool had better emotional well-being and overall quality of life than those receiving impairment-based therapy. Strength, balance, walking and daily activities did not improve clearly. OT Survey 2019 Active Ageing Level and Time Use of Elderly Persons in a Thai Suburban Community. Occupational therapy international Older adults in a Thai community school had moderate active ageing overall. Those with higher active ageing spent more time in leisure, social activities, and outdoors with others. Rest and sleep took the largest part of the day. OT Other 2019 Upper Extremity Function Assessment Using a Glove Orthosis and Virtual Reality System. OTJR : occupation, participation and health A sensor-equipped glove tracking hand movements during virtual tasks correlates strongly with the Wolf Motor Function Test in stroke survivors. This suggests the software can validly monitor upper limb motor status during therapy without requiring separate clinical assessments. OT Other 2019 Canadian Occupational Performance Measure Supported by Talking Mats: An Evaluation of the Clinical Utility. Occupational therapy international For six clients with cognitive and communication problems after brain injury, adding Talking Mats to the COPM helped most identify and rate daily activity problems, especially early steps. One client was less engaged and reflective. Use it selectively. OT Other 2019 Development and Validation of the Occupational Therapy Engagement Scale for Patients with Stroke. Occupational therapy international A 12-item scale allowed occupational therapists to rate engagement in hospitalized subacute stroke patients. Higher scores meant more engagement, and scores were modestly related to daily-living performance two months after discharge. OT Other 2019 Effects of using activity diary for goal setting in occupational therapy on reducing pain and improving psychological and physical performance in patients after total knee arthroplasty: A non-randomised controlled study. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients after knee replacement who added an activity diary to occupational therapy had better walking pain, anxiety, steps, and physical activity than therapy alone. Resting pain, helplessness, and pain self-efficacy did not differ. OT Narrative Review 2019 Can Occupational Therapy Address the Occupational Implications of Hoarding? Occupational therapy international There is almost no occupational therapy evidence on hoarding, and existing responses often focus on psychology or forced clearing. A client-centred approach is proposed that helps people build safer, meaningful daily activities instead of only removing possessions. OT Qualitative 2019 Experience of Occupations among People Living with a Personality Disorder. Occupational therapy international People living with Cluster B personality disorder described both disapproved and valued occupations as ways to cope, control distress, or gain approval. Socially valued occupations could also bring stigma, overwork, and exclusion. PT OT Other 2019 Effects of liaison between physiotherapists and occupational therapists for home-visit rehabilitation: preliminary study. Journal of physical therapy science Basic daily living did not differ between older adults receiving coordinated physiotherapy and occupational therapy and those receiving one discipline alone. The coordinated group had higher activity and social participation. This is a small cross-sectional study. OT Other 2019 Reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the ADL-focused Occupation-based Neurobehavioural Evaluation (A-ONE J): Applying Rasch analysis methods. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT The Japanese ADL-focused Neurobehavioural Evaluation works as a reliable outcome measure for stroke patients when its 20 activity items are scored on a simplified three-category scale. Therapists should use this revised scoring method to track changes in functional independence. PT OT Other 2019 Upper limb impairments, process skills, and outcome in children with unilateral cerebral palsy. Developmental medicine and child neurology In 108 children with one-sided cerebral palsy, upper limb strength and movement control, plus task planning and organization, were most strongly tied to self-care independence. Better affected-hand sensation supported manual ability, while spasticity was less directly linked. PT OT Cohort 2019 Outcomes of an interdisciplinary work rehabilitation program. Work (Reading, Mass.) After a comprehensive interdisciplinary program that typically involved physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician, case managers, athletic trainers, psychologists, and vocational counselors, more patients worked at discharge and lifted more pounds. Single components cannot be separated. OT Other 2019 Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Hong Kong Version of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HK-KOOS) for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis. Occupational therapy international The HK-KOOS gave reliable, culturally adapted self-report scores for knee osteoarthritis in Hong Kong. It did not match the original questionnaire's grouping, and 20% of participants scored lowest in Sports/Rec. OT Survey 2020 Long-Term Social Reintegration Outcomes for Burn Survivors With and Without Peer Support Attendance: A Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation (LIBRE) Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Burn survivors who reported attending peer support groups scored better on social interaction, activities, and work. When researchers accounted for sex, burn size and time since injury, the social interaction association remained. That is association, not proof. OT Other 2019 Longitudinal Associations Between Fatigue and Perceived Work Ability in Cancer Survivors. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Among 89 cancer survivors, people whose fatigue scores dropped over 18 months tended to report better work ability. A five-point drop in general fatigue tracked with a one-point gain on a 10-point work ability scale. OT Systematic Review 2019 The Influence of Social Support and Social Integration Factors on Return to Work Outcomes for Individuals with Work-Related Injuries: A Systematic Review. Journal of occupational rehabilitation No eligible studies tested social support interventions. Injured workers said timely communication, trust, belief that the injury was real, and positive reactions made return to work easier. Poor communication, judgement, exclusion, and indifference made it harder. OT Survey 2019 Three Out of Ten Working Patients Expect No Clinical Improvement of Their Ability to Perform Work-Related Knee-Demanding Activities After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Multicenter Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Most working patients expecting total knee replacement believed their work-related knee activities would improve. Still, 28% expected no meaningful improvement, and many expected severe difficulty with kneeling, crouching, and clambering. PT OT Systematic Review 2019 Sustainable Return to Work: A Systematic Review Focusing on Personal and Social Factors. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Support from managers and colleagues, positive attitude, confidence, younger age and higher education were most consistently linked with staying back at work after musculoskeletal or mental health absence. No single factor explained sustainable return. OT Qualitative 2019 Barriers to and Facilitators of Implementing Programs for Return to Work (RTW) of Cancer Survivors in Four European Countries: A Qualitative Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Experts in four European countries said cancer return-to-work programs are hard to implement because employers, clinicians and society often lack work-cancer knowledge, roles are unclear and communication breaks down. Clear rights, supportive cultures and early planning were named as useful. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Risk Markers for Not Returning to Work Among Patients with Acquired Brain Injury: A Population-Based Register Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation One year after brain injury, women, people born outside Sweden, lower education, aphasia, long hospital stays, mobility or self-care problems, pain, anxiety/depression, and lower satisfaction with rehabilitation process or planning were at higher risk of not returning to work. PT OT Qualitative 2019 Beyond stereotypes of cerebral palsy: Exploring the lived experiences of young Canadians. Child: care, health and development Young adults with cerebral palsy described pain, fatigue and anxiety, and said childhood services had ended. Participation in work, education and relationships mattered more to identity than motor goals, while inaccessible environments and stigma limited it. PT OT Cohort 2019 Association Between SCIM III Total Scores and Individual Item Scores to Predict Independence With ADLs in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Higher SCIM III total scores were linked to a greater chance of independence in daily tasks. Feeding and indoor mobility were easier to reach. Stair climbing and some transfers needed much higher scores. OT Other 2019 Harnessing smartphone technology and three dimensional printing to create a mobile rehabilitation system, mRehab: assessment of usability and consistency in measurement. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Older adults and people with stroke rated a smartphone and 3D printed home practice system as easy to learn and relevant to daily tasks. The app counted movements correctly, but day-to-day measurement was inconsistent for some activities. PT OT RCT 2019 The Effectiveness of Telerehabilitation as a Supplement to Rehabilitation in Patients After Total Knee or Hip Replacement: Randomized Controlled Trial. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies The telerehabilitation program did not improve 6-minute walking distance more than usual aftercare. More intervention patients returned to work, but both groups also used standard rehab, so the program's separate effect is unclear. PT OT Cohort 2019 Instrumental activities of daily living and number of daily steps in frail older females. Journal of physical therapy science Frail older women who could prepare meals and do housework took significantly more daily steps than those who needed help. Overall step counts were very low, averaging under 2,000 steps per day. PT OT Cohort 2019 Association between patients' state upon admission and decline in activities of daily living. Journal of physical therapy science Inpatients with low initial function saw the biggest drops in transfer and toilet use. Those with high initial function saw the biggest drops in bathing and stairs. Screen patients based on their admission Barthel Index to target prevention. PT OT Cohort 2019 Factors affecting the performance of activities of daily living in patients with advanced cancer undergoing inpatient rehabilitation: results from a retrospective observational study. Journal of physical therapy science In 48 patients with advanced cancer who improved or maintained daily living skills, higher rehabilitation intensity was linked to greater gains. Those with poor grooming ability at the start showed the most improvement. The study excluded patients who worsened, so it does not show what happens to everyone. PT OT RCT 2020 Reliability, validity and discriminant ability of a robotic device for finger training in patients with subacute stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The robotic device reliably measures finger strength and muscle tone in stroke patients, with changes greater than 10.6 N in flexion or 3.4 N in extension likely reflecting true improvement. It does not reliably measure spasticity, so do not use its spasticity scores to guide treatment. PT OT Case Report 2019 Impact of combination of therapeutic exercise and psychological intervention for a patient with first-time traumatic shoulder dislocation. Journal of physical therapy science A young woman with first-time traumatic shoulder dislocation who chose conservative care improved shoulder function and returned to recreational badminton after phase-based exercise, the Watson program, and psychological support. This was a single case, not proof the treatment works. PT OT SLP Survey 2020 Self-reported short sleep duration among US adults by disability status and functional disability type: Results from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Disability and health journal Adults with disabilities are more likely to report short sleep duration than those without. The risk increases with the number of disability types. Clinicians should routinely ask about sleep health in patients with functional limitations. PT OT Cohort 2020 Function and Caregiver Support Associated With Readmissions During Home Health for Individuals With Dementia. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In home health for dementia, patients most dependent in mobility and self-care were more likely to be readmitted within 30 days. Cognitive and caregiver support deficits also tracked with readmission, but mobility and self-care links remained after adjustment. OT Cohort 2020 Hand Extension Robot Orthosis (HERO) Grip Glove: enabling independence amongst persons with severe hand impairments after stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In one session, the HERO Grip Glove helped 11 stroke survivors with severe hand impairment extend fingers, grasp blocks, bottles, forks, and pens, but participants were only moderately satisfied and often needed arm or hand support. ← Previous PAGE 7 OF 22 Next →
