- Case-Control2016Urinary metabolomics of young Italian autistic children supports abnormal tryptophan and purine metabolism.Molecular autismUrine metabolic profiles differed between young autistic children and matched controls, mainly in tryptophan and purine pathways. These are laboratory findings, not therapy outcomes, and do not tell clinicians how to diagnose or treat autism.
- SLPOther2016Sentence Recognition Prediction for Hearing-impaired Listeners in Stationary and Fluctuation Noise With FADE: Empowering the Attenuation and Distortion Concept by Plomp With a Quantitative Processing Model.Trends in hearingA hearing model predicted speech recognition thresholds in noise better than the standard SII method, especially in fluctuating noise and when a second noise test was used to correct each person’s distortion. This is a modelling result, not a clinical decision tool.
- SLPCohort2017Predictors of Long-Term Victimization After Early Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPParents reported more peer victimization nearly 7 years after severe early childhood TBI than after orthopedic injury. Children's own reports did not differ. Ask both parent and child.

- SLPCohort2017Predictors of Treatment Effectiveness for Youth with ASD and Comorbid Anxiety Disorders: It all Depends on the Family?Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren with ASD and anxiety improved after CBT. Child age and gender did not predict improvement. Children of anxious fathers started with less severe anxiety disorders but showed smaller later reductions, and family type affected symptom scores inconsistently.
- PTOTOther2017Exercising daily living activities in robot-mediated therapy.Journal of physical therapy scienceChronic post-stroke patients showed better arm movement, grip function and independence scores after six weeks of robot-assisted daily-living training; spasticity did not change and Barthel Index did not clearly improve.

The exercise groups differed in forward stability, and backward stability changed differently over time.
- SLPCase-Control2017Auditory processing in noise is associated with complex patterns of disrupted functional connectivity in autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchBoys with autism did not show a right frontal brain response to unexpected sounds in background noise, while typically developing boys did. Their frontal-temporal connectivity also differed. The response difference appeared in noise, not quiet.
- PTOther2017Effects of phase proprioceptive training on balance in patients with chronic stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 30 people with chronic stroke, phase proprioceptive training improved Berg Balance, Timed Up and Go, and balance confidence more than general physical therapy. The trial was small and allocation was not described.
- PTOTSLPSystematic Review2017The experience of patients with ABI and their families during the hospital stay: A systematic review of qualitative literature.Brain injuryPatients described inpatient rehab as prison-like due to lack of privacy and boredom. Families wanted to help with care but felt ignored or feared intruding. Both groups needed specific, consistent information at distinct times during the stay to feel prepared for discharge.
- PTOther2017Biomechanical analysis of INFINITY rehabilitation method for treatment of low back pain.Journal of physical therapy scienceA computer model of the lower back found figure-of-eight INFINITY motion doubled spinal load frequency, stayed within 10% of neutral load, and loaded back muscles symmetrically. It does not show pain or function improvement.
- PTOther2017Analysis of the muscular activities of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles in functional reach.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 48 adults aged 60 or older, shin and calf muscle activity increased as they reached farther during the functional reach test. Standing on a cushioned mat did not change that pattern compared with a firm surface.
- PTQualitative2017Qualitative Development of a Discrete Choice Experiment for Physical Activity Interventions to Improve Knee Osteoarthritis.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationPeople with knee pain weighed time, effort, cost, convenience, enjoyment, and health benefits when choosing physical activity. Physical therapists can ask about these before prescribing activity, but this study did not test whether doing so improves outcomes.

Happiness did not track daily activity or practical independence. Physical function tracked daily and practical activities, and energy tracked practical activities.
- PTOTSystematic Review2017The effectiveness of robotic-assisted gait training for paediatric gait disorders: systematic review.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationRobotic gait training in children with gait disorders has weak, inconsistent evidence. The combined randomised evidence did not show a clear walking-speed advantage over physiotherapy or exercises; small studies reported better standing or walking, but bias and mixed protocols limit confidence.
- Other2017A motion-classification strategy based on sEMG-EEG signal combination for upper-limb amputees.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn four above-elbow amputees, combining muscle and brain signals recognized hand and wrist motions better than muscle signals alone, with 91.7% of tested motion attempts correct. The test was offline, not real-time prosthetic control.
- SLPCohort2017Potential Risk Factors for the Development of Self-Injurious Behavior among Infants at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersSelf-injury at 12 months and lower cognitive scores were the strongest signs of self-injury at 24 months in infants at high familial risk for autism. 48% of those who self-injured at 12 months still did so at 24 months.
- PTOTCohort2017Predictive validity of the functional independence and difficulty scale in community-dwelling Japanese older adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn community-dwelling Japanese older adults who were independent in basic activities, lower scores on the Functional Independence and Difficulty Scale predicted future decline in instrumental activities and multiple falls. The Barthel Index did not predict these outcomes.
- PTCohort2017Quantification of postural stability in minimally disabled multiple sclerosis patients by means of dynamic posturography: an observational study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA moving platform test found balance differences in minimally disabled MS patients, while quiet standing did not. Patients swayed more front-to-back when the platform moved, even without clinical balance signs. This is an assessment finding, not proof of falls risk.
- SLPOther2016Perceptual Spaces Induced by Cochlear Implant All-Polar Stimulation Mode.Trends in hearingCochlear implant users judged sounds from a new stimulation mode as slightly different in quality, but no clearer than standard sounds. This mode did not help listeners tell two stimulation sites apart, so it may not improve hearing in noise.
- SLPOther2016Forward-Masked Frequency Selectivity Improvements in Simulated and Actual Cochlear Implant Users Using a Preprocessing Algorithm.Trends in hearingA preprocessing algorithm improved frequency selectivity in cochlear implant users in a lab test. The benefit was seen in psychophysical measures, not in speech understanding. This change does not yet improve how patients hear conversation in noise.
- SLPOther2016A comparison of an audiometric screening survey with an in-depth research questionnaire for hearing loss and hearing loss risk factors.International journal of audiologyWorkers reported more hearing loss risk factors on a confidential research questionnaire than on their employer's screening tool. The screening tool showed poor agreement with clinical audiometry for self-reported hearing difficulty, suggesting employees may underreport issues to their employer.

It did not compare them with cancer patients who did not receive inpatient rehabilitation.
- PTOther2017Validity of using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure skeletal muscle mass in preschool children.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 94 preschoolers, body fat measured by multi-frequency impedance closely tracked BMI formula estimates. Skeletal muscle mass tracked grip strength and calf circumference, not occlusal force.
- PTOTCohort2017Effect of platelet concentration on clinical improvement in treatment of early stage-knee osteoarthritis with platelet-rich plasma concentrations.Journal of physical therapy scienceBoth a low-concentration and a high-concentration platelet-rich plasma kit reduced knee pain and stiffness by more than half in patients with early osteoarthritis. The higher platelet count offered no additional clinical benefit over the lower one at six months.
- PTCohort2017Longitudinal Investigation of Rehospitalization Patterns in Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury Among Medicare Beneficiaries.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationOne year after inpatient rehab, 57% of Medicare beneficiaries with spinal cord injury and 54% with traumatic brain injury were rehospitalized. The risk pattern changed in a straight line over the year. Comorbidity, prior admissions, rehab stay length, and discharge function were linked to risk.
- SLPRCT2017Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Audioverbal Memory in Stroke Patients.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 12 stroke patients with verbal memory trouble, anodal tDCS over the left temporal parietal area increased word recall on the fifth learning trial compared with sham. In-person group attendance was linked to higher confidence and empowerment, while knowledge gains occurred regardless of whether parents attended live or watched recordings.
- OTQualitative2017The Occupational Transition Process to Upper Secondary School, Further Education and/or Work in Sweden: As Described by Young Adults with Asperger Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersYoung adults with Asperger syndrome or ADHD described transition as long and uneven. Early goal setting, work placements with on-the-job support, and help with home life mattered; day centres could help or feel remote.
- OTOther2017Environmental impact on young children's participation in home-based activities.Developmental medicine and child neurologyCaregivers who saw their home environment as more supportive reported greater child involvement in home activities. Functional limitations and performance were linked to involvement mainly through perceived support, not directly.
- Other2017Northwestern University Flexible Subischial Vacuum Socket for persons with transfemoral amputation-Part 1: Description of technique.Prosthetics and orthotics internationalA new flexible subischial vacuum socket technique was taught to 30 prosthetists. 28 of 30 transfemoral amputee patient models walked comfortably in the check socket, with little visual gait change versus their usual socket. This is teaching feasibility, not proven benefit.
- PTOther2017Small forces that differ with prior motor experience can communicate movement goals during human-human physical interaction.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSmall hand forces during blindfolded partner stepping varied with movement phase and dancer expertise, indicating they can communicate movement goals. Expert pairs used larger forces and improved synchronization, but patients were not studied.
- SLPOther2017An Excised Canine Model of Anterior Glottic Web and Its Acoustic, Aerodynamic, and High-speed Measurements.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationIn an excised dog larynx model, adding a suture bridge to mimic a glottic web raised the pressure needed for phonation and increased pitch and signal chaos as the web covered more of the airway. The web itself vibrated, creating a complex movement system unlike normal voice production.
- SLPCase-Control2017Gaze Following in Children with Autism: Do High Interest Objects Boost Performance?Journal of autism and developmental disordersHigh-interest objects did not improve first look duration in children with autism. Gaze-following accuracy was similar in both groups. Children with autism showed no advantage for the object another person looked at.
- PTOther2017Evaluation of an Outpatient Rehabilitative Program to Address Mobility Limitations Among Older Adults.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 116 older adults who finished an outpatient mobility program, walking, balance, and chair-rise scores improved after treatment. Without a comparison group, this shows what happened during care, not that the program caused the improvement.
- SLPRCT2017Kinematic Visual Biofeedback Improves Accuracy of Learning a Swallowing Maneuver and Accuracy of Clinician Cues During Training.DysphagiaHealthy adults learning a swallowing hold were more accurate with x-ray video feedback and x-ray-based cues than with muscle-signal feedback and cues based on it. X-ray first then muscle-signal training did not maintain accuracy.
