- SLPOther2016Modeling the Effects of Sensorineural Hearing Loss on Sound Localization in the Median Plane.Trends in hearingOuter hair cell damage in a model of hearing predicted poorer up-down and front-back sound localization. Errors increased as damage became more severe, and complete damage predicted near chance accuracy.
- PTOther2017Effect of neurodevelopmental treatment-based physical therapy on the change of muscle strength, spasticity, and gross motor function in children with spastic cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter one year of neurodevelopmental treatment-based physical therapy in 175 children with spastic cerebral palsy, only spasticity decreased; muscle strength and gross motor function did not improve.
- PTSurvey2017Weight control behaviors among Koreans.Journal of physical therapy scienceExercise was the most common self-reported weight-control behavior among Koreans in the survey, including walking, strength, and flexibility. The study does not show exercise worked, and many weight-control records were missing.
- OTSLPCohort2017The Longitudinal Effects of Parenting on Adaptive Behavior in Children with Fragile X Syndrome.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn children with fragile X syndrome, more responsive mothers were linked to better growth in communication, socialization, and daily living, and to less decline among children who lost skills. Behavior management showed little benefit. This is an association, not proof that parent training causes change.
- SLPPilot2017Brief Report: Using a Point-of-View Camera to Measure Eye Gaze in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder During Naturalistic Social Interactions: A Pilot Study.Journal of autism and developmental disordersA camera in an examiner's glasses let coders identify young children's eye gaze more consistently than room cameras. Children with autism looked less at the examiner's eyes and face only when coded from the glasses.
- PTCohort2017Gait disorders in the elderly and dual task gait analysis: a new approach for identifying motor phenotypes.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationWhen older adults counted backwards while walking, their stride regularity suffered most. This change helped distinguish peripheral from central gait disorders, but the walking patterns did not match diagnoses or memory scores.
- PTCohort2017Comparison between stair-climbing test and six-minute walk test after lung resection using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter lung resection, stair-climbing altitude fell, while six-minute walk distance changed little. Stair climbing may be more sensitive to reduced exercise capacity in this group.
- SLPOther2017Visual Temporal Acuity Is Related to Auditory Speech Perception Abilities in Cochlear Implant Users.Ear and hearingIn ten adults with cochlear implants, those who identified which of two flashing lights appeared first at very short intervals also scored higher on auditory-only word and sentence recognition. This links visual timing skill to speech perception, but does not show that one causes the other.
- PTOther2017Comparison therapeutic efficacy of underwater and overground walking training on the healthy subjects balancing ability.Journal of physical therapy scienceFour weeks of underwater treadmill walking was reported to improve standing balance more than overground treadmill walking in healthy adults. The underwater group had better sway and balance scores, but the study did not test patients or describe randomization.
- RCT2017Serum and cerebrospinal fluid immune mediators in children with autistic disorder: a longitudinal study.Molecular autismMost immune markers in blood did not differ between children with autism and typical controls. EGF was higher, and sCD40L was more often above detection limits, in autism, but both were unstable over time.
- SLPCohort2017"Didn't I just say that?" Comparing parent report and spontaneous speech as indicators of grammatical development.Research in developmental disabilitiesParents often missed grammar their children actually used, especially pronouns and past tense. This was most marked for less verbal children with autism, so a speech sample is needed before assuming a grammar is absent.
- PTOTPilot2017Northwestern University Flexible Subischial Vacuum Socket for persons with transfemoral amputation: Part 2 Description and Preliminary evaluation.Prosthetics and orthotics internationalTwo transfemoral amputees reported better socket comfort with the NU-FlexSIV subischial socket than their conventional ischial containment sockets, while maintaining comparable gait speed and stability. This preliminary report suggests the design is feasible and comfortable, but does not prove it improves function.
- PTOther2017Physical Activity Levels, Frequency, and Type Among Adolescents with and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdolescents with autism averaged 29 minutes per day in moderate to vigorous activity, compared with 50 minutes for typically developing peers. They reported similar activity types and frequency. The lower measured activity was not matched by lower reported participation.
- PTOTOther2017Does the Finger-to-Nose Test measure upper limb coordination in chronic stroke?Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn chronic stroke, finger-to-nose test time tracked shoulder-elbow timing, went with arm impairment and activity, and a 10.6-second cut-off separated mild from moderate-to-severe impairment.
- PTOther2017The association between fear of falling and smoothness of lower trunk oscillation in gait varies according to gait speed in community-dwelling older adults.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationOlder adults afraid of falling had less smooth lower trunk motion side-to-side at normal pace, and less smooth motion front-to-back when walking fast. Fear of falling was linked to gait changes after fall history was considered.
- PTMeta-Analysis2017Effectiveness of massage therapy for shoulder pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.Journal of physical therapy scienceMassage given alone or with other treatments reduced short-term shoulder pain more than no treatment or placebo, and pain relief remained at follow-up, but massage was not shown to be better than active treatments such as physical therapy or acupuncture.
- PTOther2017Effects of the cervical flexion angle during smartphone use on muscle fatigue and pain in the cervical erector spinae and upper trapezius in normal adults in their 20s.Journal of physical therapy scienceUpper trapezius measurements changed with neck angle in healthy young adults, and the paper reported lower values at 50° than at 0° or 30°. Cervical erector spinae measurements did not show differences.
- PTOther2017The effectiveness of short-term high-intensity exercise on ventilatory function, in adults with a high risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 30 young male smokers at high risk of COPD, three 20-minute arm ergometer sessions over three days increased FEV1 and FVC, while FEV1/FVC and PEFR did not change.
- SLPOther2017Mapping Common Aphasia Assessments to Underlying Cognitive Processes and Their Neural Substrates.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairCommon aphasia tests often measure several language and cognitive processes at once. In 38 people after left hemisphere stroke, naming tasks tracked word finding, but some WAB subtests relied on more than one process, so single scores need broader interpretation.
- SLPOther2017Developmental Markers of Genetic Liability to Autism in Parents: A Longitudinal, Multigenerational Study.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of children with ASD had lower childhood language scores and slower math growth than controls. Their early language profiles were linked to adult social communication traits and to symptom severity in their children.
- Other2017Clinically Relevant Levels of 4-Aminopyridine Strengthen Physiological Responses in Intact Motor Circuits in Rats, Especially After Pyramidal Tract Injury.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairIn rats with a cut motor pathway, 4-AP made the motor cortex more excitable, especially on the injured side. The excitability increase was 70.9%, versus 14% in uninjured rats. This was an animal physiology study, not human evidence.
- SLPOther2016Rapid Release From Listening Effort Resulting From Semantic Context, and Effects of Spectral Degradation and Cochlear Implants.Trends in hearingSemantic context can reduce listening effort while hearing a sentence, but degraded speech delays that relief. People using cochlear implants showed some benefit, though it arrived later than in normal hearing.
- SLPOther2016Aging and Spectro-Temporal Integration of Speech.Trends in hearingOlder adults with normal hearing integrated fragmented speech as well as younger adults in this lab test. Age did not reduce performance across most conditions. Only the mid-age group had an unexplained drop when bands were split between ears.
- SLPOther2016A Binaural Grouping Model for Predicting Speech Intelligibility in Multitalker Environments.Trends in hearingA model using binaural cues predicted how spatial separation helps hearing speech in noise. It matched the measured pattern, but predicted 3 to 4 dB more benefit than measured.
- SLPOther2016Subjective Listening Effort and Electrodermal Activity in Listening Situations with Reverberation and Noise.Trends in hearingBoth groups rated more effort in hard reverberation than hard noise. Skin conductance did not reliably separate conditions, so EDA alone is not a ready measure of listening effort.
- SLPOther2016The Prediction of Speech Recognition in Noise With a Semi-Implantable Bone Conduction Hearing System by External Bone Conduction Stimulation With Headband: A Prospective Study.Trends in hearingExternal bone conduction stimulation with a headband predicted speech-in-noise results for an implanted device in eight patients. While objective hearing scores did not differ significantly between the two, patients reported much higher satisfaction and quality of life with the implant.
- PTRCT2017The effects of Pilates exercise on cardiopulmonary function in the chronic stroke patients: a randomized controlled trials.Journal of physical therapy scienceAdding Pilates to usual stroke rehab improved resting heart rate, oxygen uptake and Timed Up and Go more than control in 20 chronic stroke patients, but both groups changed and the study was small.
- OTCase-Control2017Social and Non-social Hazard Response in Drivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersDrivers with autism did not differ significantly from matched controls in simulated hazard responses. Controls reacted faster to social hazards, but the group difference was not significant.
- PTOTCase Report2017Effects of daily living occupational therapy and resistance exercise on the activities of daily living and muscular fitness in Guillain-Barré syndrome: a case study.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter 12 weeks of combined daily living occupational therapy and elastic band resistance exercise, a man with Guillain-Barré syndrome increased his independence score from 54 to 79 points and showed higher muscle strength. This describes a case, not a proven treatment.
- PTOTCase Report2017Improved functional independence measure facilitates return to home after paralyzed upper-limb training: a case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe FIM score rose from 71 to 105 in one stroke patient who received occupational therapy, affected upper-limb training, physiotherapy, and a fixed walker with knee support over four months. She returned home. This is one person, not proof the package works.
- Case-Control2017Working Memory Impairments in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: The Roles of Anxiety and Stress Physiology.Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren with 22q11.2DS had higher anxiety and ADHD symptoms, lower IQ scores, and lower shapes working memory scores. The model linked lower working memory to anxiety, not to stress physiology.
- Protocol2017Head injury serum markers for assessing response to trauma: Design of the HeadSMART study.Brain injuryEmergency patients with suspected head injury are being followed with serial blood samples to test biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis. The first 300 were mostly mild injury with normal CT. No biomarker results are available yet.
- SLPNarrative Review2017Speech and nonspeech: What are we talking about?International journal of speech-language pathologyNo new evidence for practice. This theoretical review debates whether speech uses a special motor system or shared oral-motor systems, without participants or outcomes.
- SLPOther2017Income, Family Context, and Self-Regulation in 5-Year-Old Children.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPIncome was not linked to emotional regulation, but household instability was, especially in low-income families, and maternal depressive symptoms were linked to worse cognitive regulation.
- SLPOther2017Bias in the perception of phonetic detail in children's speech: A comparison of categorical and continuous rating scales.Clinical linguistics & phoneticsContinuous ratings of children's /s/ and /θ/ productions did not shift when listeners also judged vowels or gender. Binary judgments changed how listeners used some sound features. In this lab study, continuous ratings were less biased by these tasks.
- Case Report2017It Is Just Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder…or Is It?Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPA child's ADHD-like symptoms improved after adenotonsillectomy but recurred. Palate expansion later resolved mouth breathing, with allergy treatment, behavior management, and a school plan. This case cannot show which treatment worked.
- PTCase Report2017Application of extracorporeal shockwaves in the treatment of scoliosis: a case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceOne girl wearing a part-time brace and receiving shockwave therapy showed short-term reductions in trunk rotation and finger-floor distance, but values returned after 3 to 5 days. The brace and shockwave cannot be separated.
- PTOther2017Static balance according to hip joint angle of unsupported leg during one-leg standing.Journal of physical therapy scienceWhen young adults stood on one leg with eyes open, sway was larger with the unsupported leg at 0° than at 30°, 60° or 90°. With eyes closed, the pattern was less consistent, so record hip angle when testing balance.
- PTOther2017In-lab versus at-home activity recognition in ambulatory subjects with incomplete spinal cord injury.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn incomplete spinal cord injury, a waist accelerometer recognized instructed home activities much better when trained on at-home movement data (85.9%) than when trained only on lab data (54.6%).
- PTOTSLPRCT2017Improving Prospective Memory in Persons With Parkinson Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairTeaching people with Parkinson's to visualize specific 'when and what' cues improved memory for one-off tasks more than simple repetition. Both strategies helped, but the visualization method showed a stronger effect on difficult, non-repeated tasks.
- SLPOther2017Language Skills of Males with Fragile X Syndrome or Nonsyndromic Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersBoys with fragile X syndrome had stronger vocabulary than boys with autism after age, nonverbal IQ, and autism severity were considered. Grammar did not separate the groups. Assess vocabulary and grammar separately, not as one language score.
- SLPCohort2017Executive Functioning Mediates the Effect of Behavioral Problems on Depression in Mothers of Children With Developmental Disabilities.American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilitiesMothers whose children had more behavioral problems showed greater executive functioning limitations, which in turn predicted higher depression scores. This link was stronger in mothers of children with fragile X syndrome than those with autism.
- PTCase Report2017Effect of prolonged racing on muscle activity and spatiotemporal variables: double-poling technique.Journal of physical therapy scienceFive elite skiers maintained similar pace in a 12-km double-pole roller-ski race, while triceps and lower-leg muscle signals showed fatigue-related changes, though additional checks did not confirm clear differences.
- PTCohort2017Effect of Cue Timing and Modality on Gait Initiation in Parkinson Disease With Freezing of Gait.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationExternal cues, especially predictable sound or light cues, improved preparatory weight shifts before stepping and reduced missing preparatory movements in people with Parkinson disease with or without freezing. Ankle vibration cues helped less and were unreliable.
- OTSurvey2017Family adaptation to cerebral palsy in adolescents: A European multicenter study.Research in developmental disabilities31.8% of parents of adolescents with cerebral palsy had clinically significant stress. Behavioural problems and how severe the child's motor problems were were linked to more distress; family functioning, positive attitude and caregiving breaks were linked to less.
- Other2017Classification of upper limb center-out reaching tasks by means of EEG-based continuous decoding techniques.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationEEG signals from healthy adults doing reaching tasks could decode movement direction, but accuracy was not high enough for real-time cursor control. Simplifying the task to classify which target was reached gave higher accuracy, especially when fewer directions were compared.
- SLPCohort2016Social Context and Hearing Aid Adoption.Trends in hearingPatients who came to audiology appointments with a significant other, often a spouse, adult child, or parent, were more likely to adopt hearing aids. The link was strongest for mild hearing loss and was not clear for hearing aid returns.
- SLPSurvey2016Online Data Collection to Evaluate a Theoretical Cognitive Model of Tinnitus.American journal of audiologyQuestionnaire scores did not differ significantly between online and paper tinnitus surveys, but online respondents were younger. Online completion avoided missing data; postal responses had 0.2% missing. This is a data-collection result, not a treatment finding.
