PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Barriers and facilitators of public transport use among people with disabilities: a scoping review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with disabilities face barriers at every step of public transport use, from walking to the stop to riding the bus. Physical issues like steep ramps and social issues like driver attitudes were common. Travel training may help improve confidence and reduce fear. OT Other 2023 The Associations Between Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity Levels and Mental Health in Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities, more light, moderate, or vigorous activity was linked to better quality of life or self-concept. Vigorous activity was linked to lower self-concept. Only 13.7% met the 60-minute moderate-to-vigorous guideline. OT Survey 2023 Attitudes to Interpersonal Touch in the Workplace in Autistic and non-Autistic Groups. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Employed autistic adults reported more negative attitudes to general, social and workplace touch, plus greater loneliness and lower wellbeing. Workplace touch attitudes did not predict loneliness or wellbeing; general touch attitudes and touch’s role at work did. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Exploring the Symptom Profiles of Intolerance of Uncertainty in Autistic Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported that autistic children struggled more with the emotional distress of uncertainty than with the thoughts or behaviors. This pattern held even when anxiety was absent. Screening for feelings of stress, inability to relax, and sleep problems may identify children needing emotion regulation support. OT Cohort 2024 Influence of Perceptual Load on Attentional Orienting in Post-Stroke Fatigue: A Study of Auditory Evoked Potentials. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Stroke survivors with high fatigue showed reduced brain responses to unexpected sounds only when background noise was present. This suggests high perceptual load impairs attentional orienting in fatigue, even when physical performance and early sensory processing remain normal. PT OT Cohort 2024 The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic Quarantine on Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disability: A Longitudinal Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Scores measured before, during, and after lockdown in adults with autism and intellectual disability showed more autistic traits during confinement, improved executive function and wellbeing after reopening, and worse balance, with no change in walking. OT Pilot 2024 Evaluating the impact of a darts game intervention on cognitive function in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment: a pilot study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A darts communication programme did not establish cognitive improvement in older adults. In those without mild cognitive impairment, forward weight shift while throwing had a possible link to later MoCA scores, but the link was not established. OT Other 2024 "I completely shut down": A mixed methods evaluation of the fear-avoidance model for young adults with a recent concussion and anxiety. Rehabilitation psychology Young adults with recent concussion and anxiety described symptoms, fear, avoidance, and depression making work, academics, and social life harder. Pacing, activity adjustment, social support, and mindfulness were described as helping some confront symptoms and recover. OT Pilot 2024 Autistic-Delivered Peer Support: A Feasibility Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic-delivered peer support was feasible for 29 Medicaid-eligible autistic youth and adults. 90% were satisfied, 70% would recommend it, and 65% said it was culturally sensitive. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Heightened Anxiety and Depression Among Autistic Adolescents with ADHD: Findings From the National Survey of Children's Health 2016-2019. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adolescents with both autism and ADHD have the highest rates of anxiety and depression. Anxiety affects 72% of females and 69% of males with both conditions. Depression affects 39% of females and 38% of males. These rates are far higher than in those with only one condition or neither. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 "I Wish I Had That!": A Qualitative Analysis of Psychosocial Treatment Preferences Among Young Adults With Recent Concussion and Anxiety. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Young adults with recent concussion and anxiety want a short, early, virtual program led by a compassionate facilitator. They need clear facts to debunk myths, coping skills for activity pacing, and validation that their symptoms are normal. They prefer agency over rigid instructions. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Unmet environmental needs and unmet healthcare needs in a population of young adults with cerebral palsy: what the SPARCLE study tells us. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Young adults with cerebral palsy who lack social support are much more likely to have unmet needs for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counselling. Physical accessibility alone did not predict unmet care. Clinicians should assess family and community support networks, not just transport or building access. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Access to inpatient mood management services after stroke in Australian acute and rehabilitation hospitals. Clinical rehabilitation Mood screening rates in Australian stroke hospitals increased over ten years but remain low, with only 33% of acute patients screened by 2021. Access to psychologists improved in rehabilitation settings but stalled in acute care, leaving older patients and those needing interpreters at higher risk of being missed. OT Qualitative 2024 Perspectives on Employer-Initiated Terminations Among Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults who lost their jobs most often blamed themselves, citing work performance and social difficulties. Only a minority cited discrimination or lack of accommodations. This self-blame persists even when workplace barriers exist, suggesting a need to address internal attributions in employment support. PT OT Cohort 2024 Interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation for immigrants with chronic pain who need language interpretation. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Immigrant patients with chronic pain started with worse pain, mood, and fear of movement than native speakers. They improved significantly in pain intensity, depression, and fear of movement after interdisciplinary rehabilitation with interpreters. However, only women showed these gains; men did not improve on any measure. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Mental health in children with disabilities and their families: red flags, services' impact, facilitators, barriers, and proposed solutions. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Caregivers and clinicians identified red flags like school isolation and sleep changes. System barriers, especially waitlists, drove negative experiences. Both groups urged family-centered care, standardized mental health training for all disciplines, and decoupling mental health support from disability diagnoses. PT OT Cohort 2022 Trajectories of Physical Function and Disability Over 12 Months in Older Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Older adults with chronic low back pain followed different courses. Some stayed stable, some improved, and some worsened. The classes also differed in activity, pain, fear, catastrophizing, mood and comorbidities. OT Cohort 2024 Stressful life events are associated with self-reported fatigue and depressive symptoms in patients with mild traumatic brain injury. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Patients with mild brain injury did not differ from patients with ankle fracture in reported fatigue or depressive symptoms. In the mild brain injury group, more recent stressful life events were associated with more reported fatigue and depressive symptoms. OT SLP Other 2024 "He Sees his Autism as a Strength, Not a Deficit Now": A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study Investigating the Impact of Strengths-Based Programs on Autistic Adolescents. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported high satisfaction with community coding and STEAM programs for autistic teens, but outcomes remained stable over three years rather than improving. Only community participation increased significantly in the final year, while confidence dipped in the second year. PT OT SLP Pilot 2024 Community-based exercise program, self-reported health-related symptoms, and quality of life in persons with traumatic brain injury 45 + years old. NeuroRehabilitation In 20 adults with moderate-to-severe brain injury, a 12-week community-based aerobic program improved self-reported cognitive health and sleep quality compared to stretching. Global quality of life, emotional health, and social health showed no significant difference between groups. OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Self-reported Everyday Sources of Happiness and Unhappiness in Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults most often cited social partners and activities as sources of happiness. They cited social partners and interactions, job difficulties, and current events as sources of unhappiness. Themes were similar for those with and without a depression history. PT OT SLP Other 2024 The reliability, validity and clinical utility of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - ten-item version (CORE-10) in post-acute patients with stroke. Clinical rehabilitation The CORE-10 is a valid, free, and quick mood screen for post-acute stroke inpatients. A change of 9 points indicates 90% confidence in real clinical improvement or deterioration, while a score of 12 or higher marks clinically significant distress. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 The Well-being and Support Needs of Australian Caregivers of Neurodiverse Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Caregivers of neurodiverse children reported clinically significant stress and lower well-being than national averages. They identified major unmet needs for respite, support groups, and funding, with many facing financial hardship and social isolation due to stigma and lack of accessible services. OT Cohort 2024 Dynamics of Perceived Social Isolation, Secondary Conditions, and Daily Activity Patterns Among Individuals With Stroke: A Network Analysis of Ecological Momentary Assessment Data. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Adults after stroke who reported feeling worthless were more likely to report perceived social isolation later. Isolation also happened alongside being home and alone. In one model, isolation was followed by stress, then leaving home. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Prevalence and trajectories of neuropsychological post-COVID-19 symptoms in initially hospitalized patients. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Most hospitalized COVID-19 survivors had persistent cognitive complaints or severe fatigue at 9 and 15 months. About one in three developed new symptoms later. These symptoms did not significantly change in prevalence over time, though depression scores rose slightly while remaining below clinical thresholds. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Sleep Problems, Circadian Rhythms, and Their Relation to Behavioral Difficulties in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In children with autism, objective measures showed that poor sleep and unstable daily rhythms were linked to higher anxiety, aggression, and self-injury. Treating sleep fragmentation may help manage behavioral difficulties, though this study cannot prove cause. OT SLP Other 2024 What Are You Worried About? Content and Extent of Worry in Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults reported significantly higher levels of worry than non-autistic adults across all domains. Interviews revealed this worry often centers on social missteps and uncertainty, impacting daily functioning and independence in ways standard questionnaires may miss. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 Autism community priorities in diverse low-resource settings: A country-wide scoping exercise in India. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Indian autism families ranked self-help skills as the top priority for training and speech and language therapy as the most needed intervention. Mental health counselling was second, but parents sought it for themselves rather than their children. PT OT Other 2023 Individual endogenous pain modulation profiles within a multidimensional context of people with cervicogenic headache - A retrospective exploratory study. Musculoskeletal science & practice Most people with cervicogenic headache showed altered pain sensitivity or psychosocial factors, not just neck mechanics. Half had widespread pressure sensitivity. This suggests a one-size-fits-all manual therapy approach may miss the mark for many patients. OT Survey 2023 Positive and negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on families of young children in rural Colombia and implications for child outcome research. Child: care, health and development Families of 70 preschool children in rural Colombia reported many pandemic losses, yet most rated overall family impact as positive. Caregivers described improved family closeness, while income loss and distress remained common. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Using Life Course Theory to Explore the Association Between Autistic Traits, Child, Family, and School Factors and the Successful Transition to Secondary School. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Higher autistic traits were associated with better quality of life, mental health, and school belonging in 51 students transitioning to secondary school. Female students and school refusal were linked to poorer outcomes. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Hospitalization and Mortality for Insured Patients in the United States with COVID-19 with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism had higher odds of dying from COVID-19 than those without, even after accounting for other health conditions. The link to hospitalization disappeared once other chronic illnesses were considered, suggesting comorbidities drive hospital risk more than autism itself. OT Survey 2024 Financial Capability and Financial Well-Being Challenges and Vulnerabilities of Adults Living With Acquired Brain Injury: A Pilot Survey. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Adults with acquired brain injury described needing help with money tasks, and some felt financially exploited. Close others reported stress with financial forms. This pilot survey describes challenges, not tested interventions. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2024 Video games and disability-a risk and benefit analysis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Video games can be used with people with disabilities for rehab, learning, pain, and exercise, but risks like overuse and violent content mean clear goals, careful content choice, and supervision are needed. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 Association between reasons for employment and burnout tendencies among rehabilitation technology professionals. Journal of physical therapy science Rehabilitation therapists who worked mainly for money reported significantly higher burnout than those working for satisfaction. This association held even after accounting for income, self-esteem, and social support. However, as a cross-sectional survey, it cannot prove that financial motivation causes burnout. OT Cohort 2024 Trajectories of fatigue and related outcomes following mild acquired brain injury: a multivariate latent class growth analysis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine After mild brain injury, 53% had mild, decreasing fatigue and no other problems. 29% had persistent fatigue, cognitive complaints and low participation satisfaction. 11% had persistent fatigue with mood and cognitive complaints. 7% had improving fatigue with mood problems. PT OT Cohort 2024 Exploring the Major Barriers to Physical Activity in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: Observational Longitudinal Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Less active people with MS reported needing more family and friend support than active peers. Higher depression and fatigue scores linked to more perceived barriers. However, barrier scores did not predict whether someone hit standard step or activity thresholds. OT Case-Control 2023 Neuropsychiatric phenotypes in children with Noonan syndrome. Developmental medicine and child neurology Parents reported more attention, executive function, social, and aggression difficulties in children with Noonan syndrome. ADHD and oppositional symptoms were common, but objective cognitive differences did not persist after accounting for IQ. OT RCT 2024 Parent, child, and family outcomes following Acceptance And Commitment Therapy for parents of autistic children: A randomized controlled trial. Autism : the international journal of research and practice A three-session Acceptance and Commitment Therapy workshop reduced parent depression and family distress. These gains were maintained at four-month follow-up. However, the workshop did not improve child mental health or overall family functioning. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2024 Barriers and facilitators for increased accessibility to quality rehabilitation services in low- and middle- income countries: a systematic review. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Rehabilitation access in low- and middle-income countries was limited most often by cost, facilities and workforce. Across 42 included papers, insurance, government or NGO funding, community-based programs and training were reported facilitators. PT OT Other 2024 Graph modeling of relational structures among functioning variables with low back pain: an exploratory analysis based on International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine A network analysis of low back pain patients identified lifting and carrying objects and temperament functions as central hubs. Dysfunction in these areas correlates strongly with issues in emotional stability, joint stability, and self-care, suggesting these are key targets for comprehensive management. OT RCT 2024 Virtual Interview Training Among BIPOC Autistic Transition-Age Youth: A Secondary Analysis of an Initial Effectiveness RCT. Journal of autism and developmental disorders BIPOC autistic youth using a virtual interview simulator alongside standard transition services showed improved interview skills and lower anxiety. They were more likely to get competitive jobs (27.3%) than those in standard services alone (0%). The sample was very small. OT Systematic Review 2024 Mental Health Professionals' Experiences of Adapting Mental Health Interventions for Autistic Adults: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Clinicians adapting mental health interventions for autistic adults described highly individualised work: concrete language, slower pacing, special interests, and involving others, but limited training, time, and rigid services often made it harder. OT SLP Survey 2024 Associations of formal childcare use with health and human capital development for adolescent mothers and their children in South Africa: A cross-sectional study. Child: care, health and development In South Africa, adolescent mothers whose children used formal childcare were more likely to be in school or work, pass a grade, and report positive future goals. Their parenting scores were higher. Children's language, cognitive and motor scores were higher at older ages in childcare. OT Survey 2024 Examining a model of anxiety in autistic adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice The proposed anxiety model was not supported across both groups together. In autistic adults, an adjusted model linked uncertainty, emotion regulation and sensory differences to anxiety. In non-autistic adults, uncertainty and difficulty identifying emotions linked to anxiety, but emotion regulation did not. OT Other 2024 Re-examining the association between the age of learning one is autistic and adult outcomes. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Learning you are autistic at a younger age does not predict better quality of life or well-being in adulthood. Once other factors are considered, the age of diagnosis or learning is irrelevant. Autistic traits and co-occurring mental health conditions are the strong predictors. OT SLP Other 2024 Parent perspectives on treatment: A mixed methods analysis of PEERS® for Preschoolers. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parents of autistic preschoolers who completed PEERS® for Preschoolers reported changed parenting and described their children's peer interactions as improved. Preparing children and environments before social opportunities was the strategy most linked to better long-term parent and child outcomes. PT OT Cohort 2024 Visual-Motor Integration Deficits in 3q29 Deletion Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Individuals with 3q29 deletion syndrome showed severe visual-motor integration deficits, averaging 69.3 on a scale where 100 is typical. Motor coordination was the most impaired area. These difficulties were independent of intellectual disability, ADHD, anxiety, or executive function. PT OT Other 2024 Clinical effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation and barriers to completion in patients of low socioeconomic status in rural areas: A mixed-methods study. Clinical rehabilitation Only 11.2% of eligible rural separations completed cardiac rehabilitation. Completion was associated with lower risk of death or cardiovascular admission, while commencing without completing was not associated with lower risk. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Alignment of Canada's COVID-19 policy response with barriers and facilitators for coping reported by caregivers of youth with developmental delays, disorders, and disabilities. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Caregivers of youth with disabilities described pandemic coping barriers including lost routines, aggression, service gaps, and school disruption. Facilitators included stable routines, virtual therapy access, outdoor space, financial supports, and family/community help. Policies often failed to address these specific needs. ← Previous PAGE 25 OF 41 Next →
