PT OT SLP Other 2023 Validation and reliability analysis of the Questionnaire on the Emotional Impact of Vertigo-CIEV version translated to the Brazilian Portuguese language. CoDAS The Brazilian Portuguese version of the CIEV questionnaire reliably identifies emotional impact and anxiety risk in patients with vertigo. It correlates strongly with the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, particularly in the emotional domain, offering a practical tool for assessing psychological distress in vestibular patients. PT OT Other 2023 Factors affecting quality of life in adults with HIV: A local cross-sectional study. The South African journal of physiotherapy Young adults with HIV who were not obviously impaired still reported problems with pain, anxiety and mobility. Poorer quality of life was linked to low household income, taking many medications, long time since diagnosis, and weak leg endurance, not just HIV severity. OT SLP Pilot 2024 The emotional support plan: Feasibility trials of a brief, telehealth-based mobile intervention to support coping for autistic adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults found a brief, clinician-guided digital coping plan acceptable and relevant. Self-guided versions received mixed feedback, with some users feeling the strategies were redundant if they already had therapy. The plan worked best as a starting point for identifying personal coping tools. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 School Attendance Problems Among Children with Neurodevelopmental Conditions One year Following the Start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of autism and developmental disorders For children with autism or intellectual disability, school absence was driven by unmet needs and anxiety, not COVID-19. Positive parent-teacher relationships and predictable routines helped attendance. Parents reported lack of differentiated support as a major barrier. PT OT Cohort 2024 Diabetes is associated with longitudinal declined physical performance measures in persons with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine People with knee osteoarthritis and diabetes lost walking speed and took longer to stand up five times over eight years compared to those without diabetes. This suggests diabetes accelerates physical decline in this population, warranting regular mobility checks. OT Case-Control 2023 A preliminary 'shortlist' of individual, family, and social-community assets to promote resilience in pediatric ADHD. Research in developmental disabilities Peer acceptance and social skills were the strongest links to resilience in children with ADHD. Academic competence also mattered. Unlike typical children, those with ADHD showed no benefit from higher parental involvement, suggesting standard family-focused strategies may need adjustment for this group. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Prevalence and Correlates of VA-Purchased Community Care Use Among Post-9/11-Era Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Veterans with traumatic brain injury who had severe injuries, mental health conditions, or suicide risk were more likely to use community care purchased by the VA than those with milder injuries. This group represents a large portion of community patients who may lack specialized TBI training. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Depressive symptoms and activity engagement in autistic adolescents and those with other developmental disabilities. Disability and health journal Autistic teens and those with other disabilities had more depressive symptoms and less activity engagement than peers. Sports linked to fewer symptoms, but the group showing the benefit depended on how depression was defined. No cause can be proven from this data. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Rehabilitation delivery models to foster healthy ageing-a scoping review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Rehabilitation for older adults is mostly delivered through outpatient, telerehabilitation, home, community, inpatient, and eldercare models. Physical therapists lead most interventions, often focusing on single diseases rather than multimorbidity. Assistive technology and environmental adaptations are rarely provided. OT Qualitative 2024 'Most people have no idea what autism is': Unpacking autism disclosure using social media analysis. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Users posting about autism disclosure described it as often bringing misunderstanding, stigma, job loss, poor healthcare, and relationship harm. They wanted respect, privacy, and inclusive systems so disclosure is not needed to get basic accommodation. OT Cohort 2024 Post-traumatic stress disorder and experiences involving violence or sexual abuse in a clinical sample of autistic adults with intellectual disabilities: Prevalence and clinical correlates. Autism : the international journal of research and practice In 88 autistic adults with intellectual disabilities in mental health services, 39 had experienced violence or sexual abuse, but only 3 had PTSD diagnoses. Violence and sexual abuse were associated with irritability and hyperactivity or noncompliance. PT OT Cohort 2024 Group Versus Individual Rehabilitation in Lung Transplantation: A Retrospective Noninferiority Assessment. Cardiopulmonary physical therapy journal Individual rehabilitation was noninferior to group rehabilitation for improving 6-minute walk distance. Both formats produced similar gains in physical function, quality of life, and symptoms. Individual sessions require less time and may be a viable alternative for lung transplant patients. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 Perceptions and Bias of Small Business Leaders in Employing People with Different Types of Disabilities. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Small business owners and managers said they were least likely to hire someone who is blind and most likely to hire someone with a physical disability. Their top concern was fear of legal trouble when disciplining staff, not accommodation costs or customer reactions. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Changes in the severity of autism symptom domains are related to mental health challenges during middle childhood. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children whose social communication symptoms worsened had increasing anxiety and ADHD. Those whose repetitive behaviors decreased had higher anxiety at age 11. Worsening social symptoms and reducing repetitive behaviors were both linked to more mental health challenges. OT Other 2024 Mental health counseling is rated as most helpful by autistic adults: Service perspectives in adulthood. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults most often rated mental health services as most helpful. Those currently seeing a counselor also visited more social and recreational places, but not every community place they measured. OT Qualitative 2023 How do Australian mental health services use easy read to make information accessible for people with intellectual disability? Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Staff in four Australian mental health or disability services often did not offer easy read to people with intellectual disability, but users said simple text and pictures helped shared understanding. It worked best when staff knew the person, had time, and involved families. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 'It wasn't the strategies on their own': Exploring caregivers' experiences of accessing services in the development of interventions for autistic people with intellectual disability. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Caregivers of autistic children with severe intellectual disability described accessing support as a constant battle. They highlighted that effective help required individualised assessment, consistency, and collaboration, rather than generic strategies or medication alone. Families felt unsupported when services lacked connection and flexibility. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Adaptive behaviour deficits in individuals with 3q29 deletion syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Adaptive behaviour scores were substantially below typical in 32 individuals with 3q29del, especially daily living skills. Executive function tracked adaptive behaviour more closely than IQ, and more comorbid diagnoses were linked to lower scores. PT OT RCT 2024 Dog-assisted physiotherapy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a randomized controlled pilot study. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Adding a therapy dog to balance exercises for two weeks improved walking distance, balance, and mood more than standard physiotherapy alone in people with ALS. The study was small and short, so it shows promise but does not prove long-term benefit or how to apply it in routine care. OT SLP Other 2023 Characterizing subdomains of insistence on sameness in autistic youth. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Insistence on sameness splits into three distinct types: arranging things 'just right', following routines for a goal, and imposing rituals on other people. Anxiety was the strongest predictor for all three types. OT Qualitative 2024 Autistic adults' experiences of financial wellbeing: Part II. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults described financial wellbeing as precarious even when budgeting strictly. Stable income and accessible government support were paramount, while executive function challenges and lack of early financial education made planning difficult. Social dynamics ranged from helpful family buffers to financial abuse. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2024 The use of noninvasive brain stimulation techniques in autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Noninvasive brain stimulation shows mixed results for autism, with some studies reporting improvements in social symptoms and others finding no benefit. Safety data are limited for children. Current evidence is insufficient to support routine clinical use. OT SLP Other 2024 Cognitive emotion regulation difficulties increase affective reactivity to daily-life stress in autistic adolescents and young adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic youth reported higher daily negative affect and more activity-related stress than non-autistic peers. They also used fewer adaptive and more non-adaptive emotion regulation strategies. These difficulties may increase vulnerability to mental health symptoms. OT Qualitative 2024 Playing online videogames-more than just entertainment? A qualitative study of virtual social participation in persons with spinal cord injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Seven men with spinal cord injury said online videogames helped them stay in touch with friends and family when physical barriers stopped face-to-face contact. They preferred meeting in person, but called gaming better than no social contact. OT Cohort 2024 Well-designed manufacturing work improves some cognitive abilities in individuals with cognitive impairments. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Workers with cognitive impairments improved on assembly learning, sustained attention, and visual recognition memory over two years. Finger dexterity, verbal memory, and abstract reasoning did not improve. This was observational work, not a tested intervention. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Sex differences in the age of childhood autism diagnosis and the impact of co-occurring conditions. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In 1438 children diagnosed with autism, boys were diagnosed earlier than girls, but that sex difference did not remain after other diagnoses were included. Speech, audiology, and physical or occupational therapy visits were linked to earlier diagnosis. OT SLP Survey 2024 Mindreading beliefs in same- and cross-neurotype interactions. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic and non-autistic people both believe they read their own group better than the other. They also believe others from their own group understand them better. Contact with autistic people did not improve non-autistic participants' belief in their ability to read them. OT Other 2023 Revisiting the Do-Live-Well Health Promotion Framework: A Citation Content Analysis. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Only 17 published works applied the Do-Live-Well framework between 2017 and 2022. Most used it as a theoretical lens for qualitative research rather than a clinical tool. Adoption remains limited primarily to occupational therapy circles in Canada and the United States. PT OT SLP Pilot 2023 Feasibility of Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Veterans Managing Chronic Pain. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Veterans with chronic pain who completed a 12-week mindfulness program reported less catastrophic thinking about their pain, but their actual pain intensity scores did not significantly decrease. High dropout rates and the lack of a control group mean these results are preliminary and cannot confirm the program works. PT OT Cohort 2023 Functional Ability, Psychological Factors, and Rehabilitation Outcomes After Elective Total Hip Replacement. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Older adults in rehab after hip replacement improved their function but did not regain their pre-surgery level. Higher positive affect predicted shorter hospital stays, but did not predict better functional ability at discharge. OT Survey 2023 Management of Chronic Pain by Occupational Therapist: A Description of Practice Profile. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Most Quebec occupational therapists treating chronic pain work in private practice or secondary care, rarely in family medicine groups or tertiary settings. They frequently use individual interventions like energy conservation and task adaptation, but seldom use group therapy. OT Case-Control 2024 Risk factors and clinical correlates of sensory dysfunction in preschool children with and without autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research A provider sensory diagnosis was reported in 23.7% of preschool children with autism, 8.6% with other developmental delay, and 0.8% of population controls. Maternal anxiety during pregnancy and neonatal jaundice were associated with sensory diagnosis. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Pulmonary rehabilitation in follow-up and inpatient rehabilitation for Long COVID: twelve months of follow-up. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Long COVID patients improved during 21-day pulmonary rehabilitation, but fatigue and mental health problems worsened again by follow-up. Among those employed at baseline, 86.9% of inpatient rehabilitation and 88.6% of follow-up rehabilitation patients had returned to work at 12 months. OT Survey 2024 Investigation of the Consumer Perspective on Leisure in Mental Health Inpatient Units. OTJR : occupation, participation and health People admitted to locked mental health inpatient units valued leisure highly, but rated their ability to engage lower. They named motivation, sedation, staff time, and limited activities as barriers, and asked for simple social or independent activities. OT Pilot 2023 "Kickstart to Recovery": An Irish Football Program for Mental Health Service Users. OTJR : occupation, participation and health The main recovery and football meaning scores did not show a clear change. Some energy scores moved positively and new participants' illness-management scores changed, but this pilot was too small to confirm. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Impact of the Great Recession on Adults With Autism and Their Mothers. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities The Great Recession caused an immediate spike in problem behaviors for autistic adults and depressive symptoms for their mothers. While employment and physical health remained stable, the recession halted the gradual improvement in behavior that had been occurring prior to 2007. OT Qualitative 2024 "What Services?": Stakeholders' Perceived Unmet Support Needs for Parents With Neurological Disorders. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Stakeholders described a severe lack of coordinated support for parents with neurological disorders, citing service gaps, inaccessible environments, and stigma. They identified the need for long-term, family-centered care that extends beyond the infant stage to address evolving needs. OT Survey 2024 Knowledge Gaps Regarding Indigenous Health in Occupational Therapy: A National Survey. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Most Canadian occupational therapists reported gaps in Indigenous health knowledge, yet 72% felt confident building trust with Indigenous clients despite limited training and low awareness of local healing practices. The survey identified six core themes, including a lack of culturally appropriate tools and workplace strategies. OT Survey 2024 The association between social camouflage and mental health among autistic people in Japan and the UK: a cross-cultural study. Molecular autism In Japanese autistic adults, camouflage was linked with anxiety, depression, and well-being in a curved pattern, not a straight-line pattern; the UK sample did not show this. This is association, not proof. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 The impact for DCD - USA study: The current state of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) in the United States of America. Research in developmental disabilities Most families in the USA have sought therapy for their child's coordination difficulties, but only about one in three were currently receiving it. Parents reported significant challenges in obtaining diagnoses and accessing consistent support for school and daily activities. OT Qualitative 2023 Distance supervision as experienced by occupational therapists in mental health: An interpretative phenomenological study. The British journal of occupational therapy Occupational therapists in mental health settings found distance supervision offered flexibility and reduced travel, but often felt it was less personal and harder to protect from interruptions. The strength of the relationship with the supervisor mattered more than whether the session was virtual or face-to-face. OT Pilot 2024 Measuring employment precariousness in gig jobs: A pilot study among food couriers in Brussels1. Work (Reading, Mass.) Gig food couriers in Brussels scored 0.561 on a new 0 to 1 precarity questionnaire. Couriers with worse well-being also reported more precarious work, but the study was too small to show clear differences by age, sex, education, migration status, or job type. OT Systematic Review 2024 A meta-ethnography of autistic people's experiences of social camouflaging and its relationship with mental health. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic people described camouflaging as a way to cope with stigma and social stress. It could reduce rejection but also bring exhaustion, anxiety, lost support and identity confusion. Some felt the tradeoff was worth it. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2024 School absenteeism in autistic children and adolescents: A scoping review. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic children miss school more often than peers, especially those with co-occurring mental health conditions. Current interventions are small, uncontrolled, and lack evidence of efficacy. Schools should focus on individualized accommodations and early detection rather than relying on proven treatment programs. OT Qualitative 2024 "But at a certain point, the lights literally went out": A qualitative study exploring midlife women's experiences of health, wellbeing, and functioning in relation to paid work. Work (Reading, Mass.) Midlife women described exhaustion arising when menopausal symptoms collided with inflexible work and unpaid care duties. Many concealed symptoms to avoid stigma. Autonomy helped some manage, but most resorted to individual fixes like reducing hours or changing jobs rather than structural support. OT Narrative Review 2023 Home environment design theories and models related to the occupational performance, participation and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review. The British journal of occupational therapy This review maps design theories for homes of people with intellectual disabilities. It highlights four principles: offering safety and comfort, providing control to manage stress, supporting skill acquisition, and fostering person-environment reciprocity. These inform assessment and advocacy, but do not prove that specific designs improve outcomes. OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Made to feel different: Families perspectives on external responses to autism and the impacts on family well-being and relationships. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Families described being made to feel different by schools and communities. Sensory overload and bullying at school led to home meltdowns and isolation. Parents and adolescents wanted support groups and professionals who understood autism’s impact on the whole family unit. OT Cohort 2024 Relationship between duration of sick leave and time variation of words used in return-to-work programs for depression. Work (Reading, Mass.) In records from a depression return-to-work program, social and emotional words increased over time, and the rise was greater for shorter sick leave. Depression scores did not track sick leave duration. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Characterising the social interaction style of autism in young adult males with fragile X syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Young men with fragile X syndrome and autism split evenly between active and passive social styles. Crucially, neither style predicted their cognitive, language, or adaptive skills. A passive presentation does not mean lower ability; do not underestimate a patient's capacity based on how they initiate social interaction. OT Survey 2024 Differences in how women and men in a Swedish population-based sample think about sick leave: A cross-sectional vignette study. Work (Reading, Mass.) Men were more likely than women to say it was not reasonable for a person with mild to moderate depression symptoms to be sick-listed for a couple of weeks. The man or woman named in the written case did not change this judgement. ← Previous PAGE 26 OF 41 Next →
