- PTOTSurvey2019Sex/gender disparities in health outcomes of individuals with long-term disabling conditions.Rehabilitation psychologyAmong adults with long-term disabling conditions, physical function and depressive symptoms varied by age, and women reported more severe fatigue and pain than men. Younger women functioned better, older women worse, and women aged 45 to 54 reported more depressive symptoms.
- SLPCase Report2019Phonemic fluency improved after inhibitory transcranial magnetic stimulation in a case of chronic aphasia.International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptationA woman with chronic aphasia improved phonemic fluency by 10 words two months after inhibitory rTMS over right Broca's homologue. Naming, semantic fluency, and Stroop did not improve. This single case cannot show the treatment works.
- PTRCT2019A Stimulus-Response Framework to Investigate the Influence of Continuous Versus Interval Walking Exercise on Select Serum Biomarkers in Knee Osteoarthritis.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 27 people with knee OA, 45 minutes of continuous treadmill walking raised a blood marker linked to cartilage turnover and increased pain, while the same walking split into three 15-minute bouts with 1-hour rests did not.
- SLPCase-Control2019Brief Report: Maternal Opioid Prescription from Preconception Through Pregnancy and the Odds of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Autism Features in Children.Journal of autism and developmental disordersMothers with an opioid prescription before conception in this study were more likely to have a child with autism or autism features than mothers without one. Prescriptions during pregnancy did not show a clear association.
- PTCohort2019Intra- and Interrater Reliability and Concurrent Validity of a New Tool for Assessment of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema of the Upper Extremity.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationA standardized physical exam for breast cancer arm swelling scored 0 to 72 agreed with arm volume and stayed consistent across repeat exams. It is not proven to detect early swelling or change over time.
- OTSLPCohort2019Longitudinal assessment of stability of sensory features in children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchSome sensory problems eased over time, but children with more severe problems at the first visit usually stayed relatively worse. More occupational, speech-language, or total therapy hours were linked to worse later sensory problems, not better.
- PTOther2019Differences in Glucose Metabolism Among Women With Spinal Cord Injury May Not Be Fully Explained by Variations in Body Composition.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationWomen with tetraplegia handled a glucose drink worse than women with paraplegia or able-bodied controls, even after accounting for body fat and lean mass. No treatment was tested.
- SLPSystematic Review2019Telehealth as a Model for Providing Behaviour Analytic Interventions to Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAcross 28 studies, telehealth training for parents and staff delivering behaviour analytic interventions to children with autism showed improvements in many studies, but quality was weak and the review did not call it evidence-based practice.
- PTOther2018Test-retest reliability of physiotherapists using the action research arm test in chronic stroke.Journal of physical therapy sciencePhysiotherapists scoring a videotaped chronic stroke patient twice with ARAT produced closely related scores and little average change. This supports stable scoring, not proof of patient improvement or wider generalisability.
- PTOTRCT2018Automated functional upper limb evaluation of patients with Friedreich ataxia using serious games rehabilitation exercises.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationPeople with Friedreich ataxia took 44 seconds to wipe a virtual screen, compared with 25 seconds for healthy controls, and scored 88% accuracy versus 94%. The game may help track upper limb impairment, but it was not tested as treatment.
- Other2018Differences in anticipatory versus reactive stress to social evaluative threat in adults versus adolescents with autism.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAdults with autism showed cortisol increases before a social stress task, adolescents during it. Overall stress response was similar, so timing differed more than amount.
- PTCase-Control2018Dynamic postural control during step down task in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome.Journal of physical therapy sciencePeople with patellofemoral pain took longer to steady after stepping down than healthy adults in both front-to-back and side-to-side directions. Repetition counts did not differ. A laboratory measure detected balance difficulty that the clinical step-down count did not.
- PTOTSystematic Review2018Efficacy of high intensity laser therapy in the management of foot ulcers: a systematic review.Journal of physical therapy scienceHigh intensity laser therapy reduced wound size more than sham laser or standard care alone in three small trials. The evidence is weak because the studies were not blinded and varied widely in how they delivered the treatment.
- PTOther2018A new method for evaluating joint position sense using oral instructions based on body schema.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn healthy people, a new oral shoulder position test produced 90-degree angles similar to conventional tests, but 45-degree angles differed. Older adults reached lower angles, and children varied more.
- PTOTOther2018Effects of promoting daily physical activity on physical and mental health in older individuals.Journal of physical therapy sciencePhysical fitness did not improve more than control. With accelerometer-based nurse counselling, tailored step goals, and health seminars, older adults increased average daily steps, vitality, and social functioning; control also wore accelerometers, received seminars, and increased steps.
- SLPOther2018Effects of Aging on Vocal Fundamental Frequency and Vowel Formants in Men and Women.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationHealthy women’s pitch and some vowel formants differed between young and middle-aged or older groups. Men showed few differences, and higher formants were stable. Aging alone did not produce a consistent acoustic pattern.
- PTOther2018Limping on split-belt treadmills implies opposite kinematic and dynamic lower limb asymmetries.International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptationThe faster leg on split-belt treadmills took longer steps but also produced more ankle power earlier, while the slower leg produced less power. Step asymmetry alone may not show whether ankle work is balanced.
- PTCohort2018Relationship between outcome in acute stroke patients and multiple stroke related scores obtained after onset of stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceEarly after stroke, NIHSS and mRS scores differed between home discharge and transfer groups. FIM differed between convalescence and hospital transfer at all times. Day 30 home versus transfer groups did not differ.
- SLPNarrative Review2018Chemoradiation-induced hearing loss remains a major concern for head and neck cancer patients.International journal of audiologyHigh-dose cisplatin chemoradiation for head and neck cancer often causes hearing loss and tinnitus. Weekly low-dose cisplatin with intensity-modulated radiation therapy may be less damaging, but studies are small. Audiograms before and after treatment should be offered.
- PTRCT2018Effects of an underwear-type hip abduction orthosis on sitting balance and sit-to-stand activities in children with spastic cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceWith eight children with spastic CP, wearing the hip orthosis improved dynamic sitting balance and sit-to-stand time, but static sitting balance was lower; total trunk impairment score was not significantly different. Small crossover trial, so not enough to change routine care.
- SLPOther2018Selecting an acoustic correlate for automated measurement of American English rhotic production in children.International journal of speech-language pathologyIn children receiving /r/ therapy, trained clinician accuracy ratings were best matched by the normalised gap between the second and third voice resonance frequencies, when age and sex were considered.
- PTOther2018A comparison of upper body and limb postures across technology and handheld device use in college students.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 21 healthy college students, tablet use produced more forward head shift and neck flexion than laptop use and baseline posture. The reported finding is a posture measurement.
- PTPilot2018Effect of ankle stretching combined with arm cycling on the improvement of calf muscle stiffness in patients with stroke: a pilot study.Journal of physical therapy scienceAdding assisted arm cycling to tilt-table ankle stretching reduced calf stiffness more than stretching alone, but range improvement did not differ and walking speed did not change in stroke patients continuing routine rehabilitation.
- PTOTRCT2018Development of a 3D, networked multi-user virtual reality environment for home therapy after stroke.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA 3D virtual reality system promoted arm movement comparable to standard exercises and was liked by participants, but they found it harder to understand and preferred simple home exercises. The technology shows promise for engagement but needs easier controls before it can replace standard care.
- PTCase-Control2019Lower limb muscle fatigue during walking in children with cerebral palsy.Developmental medicine and child neurologyDuring short walks, children with cerebral palsy showed larger fatigue signs in lower leg muscles than peers, especially the more affected leg. Upper leg muscles did not show fatigue. This is observational, not evidence strength training helps.
- SLPCase-Control2019Task Dependency When Evaluating Association Between Facial Emotion Recognition and Facial Emotion Expression in Children with ASD.Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren with ASD recognized emotions less accurately and made more atypical facial expressions than peers. For children with ASD, recognition ability related to expression for named emotions, but not for human faces or scenes.
- Cohort2019Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Oral Antibiotic Use in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Retrospective Analysis of a Privately Insured U.S. Population.Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren with ASD had more gastrointestinal diagnosis claims than children without ASD: 37.0% versus 20.0%. More early antibiotic fills were also associated with later gastrointestinal diagnosis claims. This is an association, not proof antibiotics caused symptoms.
- OTSLPOther2019Social-cue perception and mentalizing ability following traumatic brain injury: A human-robot interaction study.Brain injuryAdults with TBI used a robot's brief gaze toward an object to guess what it was thinking. They needed fewer questions when the robot looked at the target. This suggests they can read simple social cues in quiet, controlled settings.
- OTSLPSurvey2019University Students with Autism: The Social and Academic Experiences of University in the UK.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAutistic university students in the UK reported more social and academic difficulties than non-autistic peers, including thoughts of withdrawal. Many still described academic strengths and wanted friendships. These are self-reported experiences, not evidence that any support works.
- SLPRCT2019Vocal function exercises for normal voice: The effects of varying dosage.International journal of speech-language pathologyHigh-dose vocal exercises improved voice stamina more than traditional or low doses, but half the participants quit. Low doses failed to produce significant change. Traditional dosing offered the best balance of improvement and adherence.
- PTOTSLPSystematic Review2019What factors affect clinical decision-making about access to stroke rehabilitation? A systematic review.Clinical rehabilitationClinicians deciding stroke rehabilitation access weighed age, dementia, pre and poststroke function, social support, motivation, expected discharge, bed shortages, and their own knowledge or gut instinct. No service reported using formal criteria.
- PTOther2019Spinal segments do not move together predictably during daily activities.Gait & postureDuring walking, sit-to-stand, and lifting, adjacent spine segments did not move together in a predictable way in people with and without low back pain. Do not assume upper and lower spine regions act as one.
- Survey2019Sociocultural Factors Influencing Caregiver Appraisals Following Traumatic Brain Injury.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationBlack caregivers of people with traumatic brain injury reported less strain than White caregivers, while poverty was linked to more strain, lower satisfaction, and lower mastery. Higher education was linked to lower mastery and more total strain.
- PTOther2019Repeatability of electromyography recordings and muscle synergies during gait among children with cerebral palsy.Gait & postureMuscle activity and groups of muscles activated together during gait were repeatable across two visits in 20 children with bilateral cerebral palsy. Step-to-step variation was still common, so very small changes between visits should not be treated as real movement changes.
- SLPCohort2019Resistance to temptation in toddlers at genetic risk for autism spectrum disorder.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceToddlers later diagnosed with autism showed less ability to resist touching a forbidden toy. At 28 months none of them resisted, while about 40% of other toddlers did; at 34 months 20% resisted, versus 73% low-risk and 64% high-risk-no-diagnosis toddlers.
- SLPOther2018Perceptual Differences between Novice and Professional Music Theater Singers.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationProfessional music theater singers produced belt, mix, and legit sounds that casting directors identified more accurately than those from novice singers. Raters relied on brassy or fluty tone quality rather than brightness or darkness to distinguish the styles.
- PTOTOther2018The Body Position Spatial Task, a Test of Whole-Body Spatial Cognition: Comparison Between Adults With and Without Parkinson Disease.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairThe Body Position Spatial Task did not distinguish adults with mild-moderate Parkinson disease from age-matched adults without Parkinson disease, although it was feasible and took 5 to 10 minutes.
- RCT2018Exploiting the heightened phase synchrony in patients with neuromuscular disease for the establishment of efficient motor imagery BCIs.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSix people with neuromuscular disease showed stronger brain synchrony than six controls, and their imagined left or right hand movements were decoded more accurately without prior BCI experience. This was an offline experiment, not a tested therapy.
- Narrative Review2018Noninvasive Brain Stimulation to Enhance Functional Recovery After Stroke: Studies in Animal Models.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairMost rodent stroke studies reviewed found rTMS or tDCS improved function or tissue preservation, but protocols varied, some results were negative, and study quality was low. This was not a human treatment trial.
- SLPCohort2018Core vocabulary in the narratives of bilingual children with and without language impairment.International journal of speech-language pathologyBilingual children with language impairment used fewer common story words than peers, and in kindergarten they said those words less often. The difference between groups was larger by first grade.
- PTOTSLPSystematic Review2018Electrostimulation of the posterior tibial nerve in individuals with overactive bladder: a literature review.Journal of physical therapy scienceTibial nerve stimulation shows promise for overactive bladder, but the evidence is weak. Most trials had poor methodological quality, small samples, and inconsistent designs. Clinicians should view it as a potential option, not a proven standard.
- PTRCT2018Immediate effect of application of the pressure technique to the psoas major on lumbar lordosis.Journal of physical therapy scienceDeep pressure on the psoas muscle did not change overall lumbar curve, but it shifted the curve at specific lower spine segments. The effect was small and seen only in young, healthy men, so it does not yet justify changing manual therapy for back pain.
- PTOther2018Effect of psoas major pre-activation on electromyographic activity of the abdominal muscles and pelvic rotation during active leg raising.Journal of physical therapy scienceRaising the opposite heel one inch before active leg raising increased abdominal muscle activity and reduced pelvic rotation in healthy men. It did not test pain, function, or patients.
- SLPSystematic Review2018Parameters and Scales Used to Assess and Report Findings From Stroboscopy: A Systematic Review.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationVoice research rarely uses stroboscopy as a treatment outcome measure. When it does, 62 studies used 141 different terms and up to 24 different scales for the same features. This lack of standardization makes results impossible to compare across studies.
- SLPOther2018Behavioral predictors of improved speech output in minimally verbal children with autism.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchMinimally verbal children with autism who could imitate more speech sounds at baseline showed more improvement in speech after 25 therapy sessions. Singing plus drum-tapping improved more than speech repetition therapy.
- SLPOther2018The role of segmental and durational cues in the processing of reduced words.Language and speechDutch listeners with no reported hearing loss understood reduced words in spontaneous speech better when they heard consonants that followed a missing first vowel. Giving them the word's duration instead made recognition worse.
- PTOther2018Correlation between the distance of scapular anterior tilting and the ratio of internal and external rotation angle of shoulder in supine position.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn twenty healthy participants, greater scapular anterior tilting was linked to lower internal rotation compared with external rotation. The study did not test treatment effects.
- SLPNarrative Review2018Monitoring neonates for ototoxicity.International journal of audiologyNo original methods or results are reported. The paper discusses monitoring newborns in intensive care for medication-related hearing loss and recommends high-frequency testing, but there is no study finding to act on.
- PTSurvey2018Anterior knee pain and its intrinsic risk factors among runners in under-resourced communities in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The South African journal of physiotherapyAnterior knee pain affected 40% of runners in under-resourced communities. Quadriceps weakness, hip muscle dysfunction, tight hamstrings and iliotibial bands, and patellar tilt were linked to the pain. Screening for these specific physical traits can help target prevention and rehabilitation.
- Survey2019Restraint interventions in people with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities: Perspectives of support staff and family members.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDSupport staff and family members judged most restraint scenarios as involuntary for themselves, but thought the person with moderate to profound intellectual disability would mind fewer. They often explained this by assumed lack of awareness or habituation.
