- SLPCohort2018Current Profile of Adults Presenting for Preoperative Cochlear Implant Evaluation.Trends in hearingMost adults referred for cochlear implant evaluation still had severe-to-profound loss and very poor aided word scores, averaging 8.7% correct. Expanded criteria had not shifted the typical preoperative profile much.
- OTPilot2018Links between sleep and daytime behaviour problems in children with Down syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRParents reported more restless sleep and other night-time sleep problems in children with Down syndrome, and these reports were related to more conduct problems, anxiety, and hyperactivity at home and school. Shorter sleep measured by a wrist watch was also related to inattention.
- Narrative Review2018An investigation into closed-loop treatment of neurological disorders based on sensing mitochondrial dysfunction.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationNo patient outcomes are reported. A mitochondrial dysfunction closed-loop treatment model is proposed, but not tested.
- SLPOther2018An Investigation of the Post-laryngectomy Swallow Using Videofluoroscopy and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES).DysphagiaBoth scans often showed residue after laryngectomy, but the scans and expert raters disagreed too much to say which tool is more useful. Videofluoroscopy was better for the neopharynx; FEES often found more residue.
- PTOTNarrative Review2018Soft robotic devices for hand rehabilitation and assistance: a narrative review.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationOf 44 soft robotic hand devices, 20 were portable, 12 had clear safety mechanisms, and 13 detected user intent. Many are early prototypes, and there is little clinical evidence for any particular design.
- PTRCT2018Effectiveness of a Blended Physical Therapist Intervention in People With Hip Osteoarthritis, Knee Osteoarthritis, or Both: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.Physical therapyBlended physical therapy with online support was not more effective than usual care for hip or knee osteoarthritis. Both groups improved similarly in function and pain, but the blended group required fewer face-to-face sessions.
- PTCohort2018An Exploration of the Impact of Initial Timing of Physical Therapy on Safety and Outcomes After Concussion in Adolescents.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTNo difference in symptom score change was found between adolescents who started physical therapy early, middle, or late after concussion. All groups improved, but with no untreated comparison group and several PT components used, the study cannot show PT caused recovery.
- SLPNarrative Review2018Contemporary Approaches to the Management of Post-stroke Apraxia of Speech.Seminars in speech and languageObjective acoustic tests and brain imaging may help distinguish post-stroke apraxia of speech from aphasia or dysarthria, but evidence is early. Speech therapy should not rely on imaging alone; articulatory-kinematic treatment has support.
- SLPCohort2018Acceptance or Despair? Maternal Adjustment to Having a Child Diagnosed with Autism.Journal of autism and developmental disordersMothers whose acceptance of their child's autism diagnosis increased over 18 months reported fewer depressive symptoms. Reductions in self-blame and despair were linked to higher life satisfaction and lower caregiving burden. This observational study cannot prove these mindset shifts caused the improvements.
- SLPCohort2018Regional Brain Dysfunction Associated with Semantic Errors in Comprehension.Seminars in speech and languageIn acute left hemisphere stroke, damage or poor blood flow in left posterior superior temporal gyrus and retrolenticular white matter was linked to more semantic errors on spoken word-picture verification. Larger lesion volume tracked more errors. No site was linked to more phonological errors.
- OTSLPOther2018Sensory Behaviors in Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: How and When Do Caregivers Respond?American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilitiesCaregivers of minimally verbal children with autism most often prompted or changed their own behavior in response to sensory behaviors. They reported responding less to movement and more to social behaviors than non-social behaviors.
- SLPCohort2018Blood lead levels and longitudinal language outcomes in children from 4 to 12 years.Journal of communication disordersHigher blood lead levels in early childhood were linked to poorer total, receptive and expressive language scores, and the difference was more visible later in childhood than in early childhood.
- PTOther2018Human arm joints reconstruction algorithm in rehabilitation therapies assisted by end-effector robotic devices.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationArm joint angles can be estimated in real time from an upper-arm accelerometer and robot hand position. In post-stroke patients this stayed stable when the shoulder moved, unlike a previous method.
- SLPQualitative2018Speech and language therapists' perspectives of therapeutic alliance construction and maintenance in aphasia rehabilitation post-stroke.International journal of language & communication disordersTherapists described building a working relationship by getting to know the person, setting shared expectations, fostering goal ownership, and responding flexibly. Time, setting, family, and therapist biases shaped how these relationships developed.
- PTNarrative Review2018Evaluating equilibrium in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.Journal of physical therapy scienceStatic balance may not expose postural control problems after ACL reconstruction. Dynamic tests such as Biodex or Equitest may better identify balance deficits.
- PTSurvey2018Preoperative education in hip and knee arthroplasty patients in Bloemfontein. The South African journal of physiotherapyAll 14 hip and 35 of 36 knee replacement patients said surgeons gave their preoperative education; 8 hip and 9 knee said a physiotherapist did. Many had no preoperative exercise teaching or home safety advice.
- SLPOther2018Treatment Response to a Double Administration of Constraint-Induced Language Therapy in Chronic Aphasia.Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHRRepeating 30 hours of intensive language therapy added little to standardized scores, but participants with mild aphasia generalized gains to untrained words. Those with severe aphasia improved on naming tests without gaining new skills. Second rounds may not be worth the time.
- PTOther2018Gait Alterations in Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome Differ by Sex.The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapyMales with FAI syndrome showed hip and pelvic walking differences compared with males without hip pain. Females with FAI syndrome showed differences mainly between their more and less painful limbs.
- SLPSurvey2018Better together: Developmental screening and monitoring best identify children who need early intervention.Disability and health journalParents who reported both developmental monitoring and screening were more likely to say their child had an early intervention plan than parents reporting either alone or neither. This was a link in parent reports, not proof the practices caused referral.
- SLPNarrative Review2018Contributions of Neuroimaging to Understanding Language Deficits in Acute Stroke.Seminars in speech and languageDiffusion and perfusion MRI in acute stroke can show language-area dysfunction even before visible infarct, and fMRI shows activation shifting during recovery. These findings help explain deficits and prognosis. They do not yet guide speech therapy.
- OTSLPOther2018Autism Spectrum Symptomatology Among Children with Duplication 7q11.23 Syndrome.Journal of autism and developmental disorders12 participants (19.0%) met clinical criteria for ASD. Parent interview alone classified 25 participants (39.7%) as autism. Use direct observation and consider language level and anxiety before diagnosing.
- Other2018Visual Motion Prediction and Verbal False Memory Performance in Autistic Children.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAutistic children predicted hidden moving events as well as typically developing children. Their verbal false memory performance did not clearly differ. This does not support a general prediction impairment in autism.
- PTOTOther2018Neural predictors of gait stability when walking freely in the real-world.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationBrain activity in the left posterior parietal cortex predicted gait stability in healthy young adults walking freely outdoors. Different walking tasks engaged different brain frequency bands, suggesting this area monitors movement planning during real-world dual-tasking.
- SLPOther2018Performance variability on perceptual discrimination tasks in profoundly deaf adults with cochlear implants.Journal of communication disordersEighteen of 35 adults with cochlear implants performed poorly on both talker and accent discrimination. Three did well on both. No clear pattern explained success.
- PTSLPCohort2017Identification of mutations in the PI3K-AKT-mTOR signalling pathway in patients with macrocephaly and developmental delay and/or autism.Molecular autismTen of 21 children with macrocephaly and developmental delay or autism had PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway mutations. Children with a mutation had lower developmental quotient scores, and two mutations were mosaic and found at higher levels in mouth or saliva samples.
- SLPOther2018Speech Processing to Improve the Perception of Speech in Background Noise for Children With Auditory Processing Disorder and Typically Developing Peers.Trends in hearingChildren understood more words when speech was processed with SSDRC than unprocessed. The gain was 29.1 percentage points in speech-shaped noise and 7.3 percentage points with a competing speaker, and children with APD still did worse in that competing speaker.
- PTNarrative Review2018Towards an integrated clinical framework for patient with shoulder pain.Archives of physiotherapy
- SLPCase-Control2018Impaired Recognition of Emotional Faces after Stroke Involving Right Amygdala or Insula.Seminars in speech and languageAcute right hemisphere stroke, especially right amygdala or anterior insula damage, was associated with poorer recognition of happy and angry faces. The stroke group was less accurate than controls. No damage was tied specifically to fear recognition.
- PTOTOther2018IMU-based gait analysis in lower limb prosthesis users: Comparison of step demarcation algorithms.Gait & postureZero-crossing algorithms demarcate steps more accurately than peak-detection algorithms for people with lower limb prostheses. Using the wrong algorithm can distort gait symmetry data, so clinicians should verify the algorithm used by their IMU system.
- SLPCase-Control2018Executive function and childhood stuttering: Parent ratings and evidence from a behavioral task.Journal of fluency disordersPreschool children who stutter did not differ from fluent peers on a behavioral executive function task overall. Parents rated them lower in working memory and shifting, and flagged more everyday executive function concerns.
- PTSLPCohort2018Effect of epilepsy on autism symptoms in Angelman syndrome.Molecular autismIn Angelman syndrome, earlier onset of seizures is strongly linked to more autism symptoms, even when accounting for the specific genetic cause. This suggests the seizures themselves, rather than just the underlying genetic deletion, contribute to the severity of autistic behaviours.
- PTPilot2018Comparing the effects of mechanical perturbation training with a compliant surface and manual perturbation training on joints kinematics after ACL-rupture.Gait & postureAfter 10 sessions, manual perturbation increased knee bend during walking, while mechanical compliant-surface training tended to reduce it. The study measured walking angles only, not long-term joint health, in a very small group.
- OTOther2018Convergent validity of actigraphy with polysomnography and parent reports when measuring sleep in children with Down syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRIn children with Down syndrome, an actigraphy watch agreed with sleep lab scores for total sleep, wake after sleep onset and efficiency, but not wake episodes or parent reports, and did not identify OSA.
- PTOTRCT2018Pilot testing of the spring operated wearable enhancer for arm rehabilitation (SpringWear).Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSpringWear did not consistently help 13 chronic stroke patients complete functional tasks, although it increased maximum shoulder flexion, elbow extension and forearm rotation, and increased forward reach workspace by 19%.
- PTNarrative Review2018Activity and Exercise Intolerance After Concussion: Identification and Management of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTConcussion patients with exercise intolerance may have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), not just poor recovery. Screen with a 10-minute standing test and adjust heart rate targets. Standard return-to-play zones often exceed POTS tolerance, risking symptom exacerbation.
- SLPOther2018Expressed parental concern regarding childhood stuttering and the Test of Childhood Stuttering.Journal of communication disordersParents who expressed concern rated more speech disfluencies on the TOCS, and their children stuttered more in a 300-word sample, but non-stuttered disfluencies and utterance length did not differ by concern. Higher reported reactions to stuttering were linked to shorter utterances.
- PTPilot2018Physiotherapy Questionnaires App to Deliver Main Musculoskeletal Assessment Questionnaires: Development and Validation Study.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesFor two ankle questionnaires, app scores matched paper scores closely, with no significant score differences. Completion time varied: paper was faster for FAOS, while the app was faster for AOFAS.
- SLPCohort2018Relationships between autism spectrum disorder and intolerance of uncertainty.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchYouth with autism showed higher intolerance of uncertainty than typical peers. Emotional dysregulation was the only autism feature that predicted this trait after accounting for anxiety. This suggests targeting emotion regulation may help manage distress in uncertain situations.
- SLPCohort2018The effect of emotion on articulation rate in persistence and recovery of childhood stuttering.Journal of fluency disordersChildren whose stuttering persisted slowed their speech after a negative video, while children who later recovered and nonstuttering children did not. For therapists, speech-rate change after negative emotion may be a marker to watch, not a tested treatment effect.
- PTRCT2018Locomotor training using an overground robotic exoskeleton in long-term manual wheelchair users with a chronic spinal cord injury living in the community: Lessons learned from a feasibility study in terms of recruitment, attendance, learnability, performance and safety.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationWith therapist supervision and a walker or crutches, a six-week exoskeleton program for long-term wheelchair users with spinal cord injury had 97.9% attendance, increased walking speed from 0.15 to 0.25 m/s, and one serious fracture occurred.
- SLPOther2018Effects of Binaural Spatialization in Wireless Microphone Systems for Hearing Aids on Normal-Hearing and Hearing-Impaired Listeners.Trends in hearingFor hearing aid users with moderate or severe loss, adding spatial cues to a wireless microphone system improved speech understanding when the microphone signal was used alone; it failed to help normal-hearing or profound-loss users, and normal-hearing localization was worse in the tested setup.
- OTPilot2018GoFAR: improving attention, behavior and adaptive functioning in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: Brief report.Developmental neurorehabilitationThe GoFAR program combining a computer game, parent training and supervised practice improved attention in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders versus controls. Home daily living skills improved in both active groups in a small pilot.
- PTOTCohort2018Prospective Changes in Vestibular and Ocular Motor Impairment After Concussion.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTVOMS symptom scores and near-point convergence distance rose above baseline after concussion, especially days 1-7. When baseline symptoms were subtracted from post-injury scores, only vertical eye movement reflex and visual motion sensitivity differed from baseline at days 8-14.
- PTOther2018A Core Set of Outcome Measures for Adults With Neurologic Conditions Undergoing Rehabilitation: A CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINE.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTTrack adults with neurologic conditions using a common set of balance, walking, transfer, and patient goal outcome measures, administered consistently at admission and discharge when goals and capacity exist.
- SLPOther2018High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Consequences for Primary Caregivers Compared to Schizophrenia and Depression.Journal of autism and developmental disordersCaregivers of adults with high-functioning autism reported similar overall burden to caregivers of people with depression or schizophrenia, but more relationship tension and more distress than schizophrenia caregivers.
- SLPCohort2018Writing fluency in patients with low-grade glioma before and after surgery.International journal of language & communication disordersPatients with low-grade glioma wrote less fluently than healthy adults, but this gap vanished once typing speed was accounted for. After surgery, writing slowed further and pauses before words increased, suggesting a decline in lexical retrieval or cognitive effort.
- PTCohort2018Cognition and mobility show a global association in middle- and late-adulthood: Analyses from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.Gait & posturePoorer cognitive test scores were linked to slower walking, longer chair stands and worse balance, but the links were small. The links were stronger in older adults.
- SLPCohort2018Speed of Language Comprehension at 18 Months Old Predicts School-Relevant Outcomes at 54 Months Old in Children Born Preterm.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPIn children born preterm, faster eye-tracking word comprehension at 18 months predicted better general language and non-verbal IQ at 4½ years, beyond family background, gestational age, and medical complications.
- SLPOther2018An Initial Psychometric Evaluation of the Joint Attention Protocol.Journal of autism and developmental disordersThe JA Protocol produces pass/fail scores for children's joint attention responses and initiations. It appears consistent across coders and repeat testing, but it is not a diagnostic tool and has not been tested for tracking therapy progress.
- PTOther2018In vivo validation of patellofemoral kinematics during overground gait and stair ascent.Gait & postureBiplane radiography measured patellar motion during walking within 0.69 mm and 2.9 degrees in four people with implanted markers. Stair ascent errors were up to 0.44 mm and 2.1 degrees. Errors rose when the other leg obstructed the view.
