- SLPOther2018Preliminary Evaluation of a Brief Autism Screener for Young Children.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPA brief caregiver questionnaire flagged toddlers who later received autism diagnoses, and most flagged children did have autism. It was tested only in low-risk toddlers, so it is not yet ready to replace routine developmental surveillance.
- Other2018fNIRS-based Neurorobotic Interface for gait rehabilitation.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationNine healthy men produced brain signals recorded with fNIRS while walking on a treadmill. A classifier reached 86.7% accuracy in the signal-decoding tests, and a simulated prosthetic leg reduced position error in under 2.5 seconds. No patients were treated.
- SLPOther2018Evaluating the Performance of a Visually Guided Hearing Aid Using a Dynamic Auditory-Visual Word Congruence Task.Ear and hearingHybrid eye-gaze beamforming improved word matching over binaural cues for normal-hearing center targets and hearing-impaired side targets. After a sudden talker switch, the first word was worse, but performance recovered by the second word.
- PTOTSLPOther2018Prosthetic energy return during walking increases after 3 weeks of adaptation to a new device.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAfter 3 weeks, users of a new passive prosthetic foot walked faster and the prosthesis returned more energy, but the sound limb also worked harder. Speed increases may explain these changes, and individual responses varied widely, so do not assume uniform adaptation.
- PTOther2018Association Between Altered Hip Extension and Kinetic Gait Variables.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 10 healthy adults, changing cadence while keeping walking speed constant altered hip extension and was linked to changes in propulsion and ankle work. This is a treadmill method, not evidence for impaired patients.
- PTCase Report2018Alleviation of neck pain by the non-surgical rehabilitation of a pathologic cervical kyphosis to a normal lordosis: a CBP® case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceOne young man with acute neck pain and a reversed spinal curve reported being completely pain free within two weeks. He underwent ten weeks of chiropractic care including traction, manipulation, and exercises. Because multiple treatments were given together, the contribution of any single component cannot be separated.
- OTSLPCohort2018Autistic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria.Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren and adolescents with gender dysphoria show more autistic traits than peers but fewer than those diagnosed with autism. Traits were elevated across all domains, not just rigidity. Screening for autism is warranted, but questionnaire scores do not equal a diagnosis.
- SLPOther2018Psychosocial Outcomes in Long-Term Cochlear Implant Users.Ear and hearingLong-term cochlear implant users had more parent-reported attention, hyperactivity, and social and adaptive skill concerns than normal-hearing peers, but many had none. Better language and working-memory skills were linked to fewer concerns.
- SLPOther2018The Middle Ear Muscle Reflex in Rat: Developing a Biomarker of Auditory Nerve Degeneration.Ear and hearingIn rats, a special probe measured the middle ear muscle reflex, and its amplitude, threshold, timing, and decay changed with sound frequency and level. This is early animal work on a possible auditory nerve biomarker, not a human test.
- PTOther2018Relationships Between Gross Motor Skills and Social Function in Young Boys With Autism Spectrum Disorder.Pediatric physical therapy : the official publication of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy AssociationBetter gross motor scores, especially ball skills and stability, were moderately associated with better parent-reported social function in young boys with autism. This is a relationship, not proof motor training improves social skills.
- PTCohort2018Differential associations between dual-task walking abilities and usual gait patterns in healthy older adults-Results from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.Gait & postureFailing a narrow-walk dual task was linked to slower usual gait and smaller knee and ankle motion; failing the cognitive part was linked to longer double support and altered knee and ankle energy use.
- PTOTCohort2018Premorbid Activity Limitation Stages Are Associated With Posthospitalization Discharge Disposition.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationOlder adults who had more difficulty before hospitalization were more likely to go to post-acute care facilities or home with services. Self-care and household-task limitation stages were linked to different patterns, so ask about both.
- SLPCohort2018Education and employment outcomes of young adults with a history of developmental language disorder.International journal of language & communication disordersAt age 24, people with a history of developmental language disorder had fewer higher qualifications and less full-time professional work than peers, but pay did not differ for similar jobs or qualifications.
- PTRCT2018Pulse Width Does Not Influence the Gains Achieved With Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in People With Multiple Sclerosis: Double-Blind, Randomized Trial.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairNarrow and wide pulse NMES produced similar gains in walking speed and endurance in 27 people with MS. Both groups improved, but with no untreated control NMES alone cannot be proven to cause them.
- SLPMeta-Analysis2018A meta-analysis of the association between vocalizations and expressive language in children with autism spectrum disorder.Research in developmental disabilitiesVocalizations strongly correlate with expressive language in children with autism. Concurrent measures showed a stronger link than longitudinal ones. This supports assessing prelinguistic vocalizations to predict language outcomes.
- PTSystematic Review2018Outcome measures for adherence to home exercises among patients with chronic low back pain: a systematic review.Journal of physical therapy scienceMost home-exercise adherence measures for chronic low back pain were patient diaries or questionnaires, and the review found no evidence that they were trustworthy. Only the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire was mentioned as having some support, but it was not clear what kind of support.
- Other2018Residual limb fluid volume change and volume accommodation: Relationships to activity and self-report outcomes in people with trans-tibial amputation.Prosthetics and orthotics internationalTime spent standing and walking did not predict how much limb fluid volume people lost during the day. Volume changes also showed no significant link to reported comfort or satisfaction. Neither weight-bearing activity nor daily volume fluctuation explained how users felt about their prosthesis.
- PTOTRCT2018Effects of long-term balance training with vibrotactile sensory augmentation among community-dwelling healthy older adults: a randomized preliminary study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationEight weeks of in-home balance training improved balance in older adults, but adding vibrotactile feedback to a smartphone trainer produced significantly greater gains. Both groups trained safely at home, though the small sample size means these results are preliminary.
- OTSLPOther2018In Search of Culturally Appropriate Autism Interventions: Perspectives of Latino Caregivers.Journal of autism and developmental disordersLatino Spanish-speaking caregivers wanted therapists to teach them directly, use Spanish, and offer practical strategies like prompting and modeling. Surveys showed few group differences, but focus groups revealed stigma, mixed messages and unmet home-support needs.
- SLPCohort2018Costs and effectiveness of hearing conservation programs at 14 US metal manufacturing facilities.International journal of audiologyTotal hearing conservation spending did not predict hearing loss rates. However, sites that paid for fit-testing had lower rates of standard threshold shifts. Spending on certification and hearing protection devices was associated with higher reported hearing loss, likely because these costs rise when problems are detected.
- PTOTSLPCohort2018Acute Phase Predictors of 6-Month Functional Outcome in Italian Stroke Patients Eligible for In-Hospital Rehabilitation.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationGetting stroke patients sitting out of bed within 48 hours predicted better independence at six months. However, early formal rehab starting within 72 hours was linked to worse outcomes, suggesting mobilization timing matters more than immediate intensive therapy.
- OTSLPNarrative Review2018Focus on the Social Aspect of Autism.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn US children, autism is reported in 14.6 per 1000; most are identified after age 4, and families face high care costs and lost income. Social communication differences are the defining clinical feature.
- OTSLPRCT2018Computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation in persons with multiple sclerosis: Results of a multi-site randomized controlled trial with six month follow-up.Disability and health journalMixed results: both groups improved over 6 months, and the group and computer program had some advantages on selected cognitive and self-report tests, but the paper reports separate outcomes rather than one overall primary-outcome result.
- PTCase-Control2018Musicians injuries: Upper quarter motor control deficits in musicians with prolonged symptoms - A case-control study.Musculoskeletal science & practiceMusicians with prolonged neck or shoulder pain showed more abnormal shoulder blade movement and lower deep neck flexor control than matched musicians without pain; neck flexor endurance did not differ.
- PTOTSLPCase Report2017Early development of infants with neurofibromatosis type 1: a case series.Molecular autismAt 10 months, ten infants with NF1 showed motor and communication delays; social engagement and temperament appeared typical. This small series cannot guide treatment.
- PTOTCase-Control2018Impairments of postural control, functional performance and strength in morbidly obese patients awaiting bariatric surgery in comparison to healthy individuals.Journal of physical therapy scienceMorbidly obese patients awaiting surgery had slower walk-and-turn times and poorer balance than matched lean controls. Absolute strength was similar, but strength relative to body weight and lean mass was lower. Aerobic capacity was impaired when adjusted for body weight.
- SLPOther2018Implicit causality bias in adults with traumatic brain injury.Journal of communication disordersAdults with traumatic brain injury were less likely to decide which person caused an action from the verb in a sentence, and made more errors. This may make statements such as “the boss criticized the employee” harder to interpret.
- PTCase-Control2018The impact of walking speed on interlimb coordination in individuals with Parkinson's disease.Journal of physical therapy scienceWhen walking at the same treadmill speeds, adults with Parkinson's disease showed more variable left-right arm coordination than healthy adults at all speeds except the slowest. Trunk coordination also differed.
- SLPOther2018The cost of not addressing the communication barriers faced by hospitalized patients.Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groupsThe paper estimates that addressing communication barriers in hospitals could prevent hundreds of thousands of adverse events and save billions annually. These are modeled projections based on national data, not results from a clinical trial.
- SLPOther2018Young children's family history of stuttering and their articulation, language and attentional abilities: An exploratory study.Journal of communication disordersYoung children who stuttered and those who did not did not differ significantly in family history of stuttering. Among children who did not stutter, a positive family history of stuttering was associated with family history of ADHD and lower language scores within normal range.
- OTSystematic Review2018At the intersection of chronic disease, disability and health services research: A scoping literature review.Disability and health journalWorking age adults with chronic conditions and disability are defined inconsistently in health services research. Limits in daily tasks, not diagnosis alone, help identify people who need more care.
- OTSLPSystematic Review2018How do Parents Manage Irritability, Challenging Behaviour, Non-Compliance and Anxiety in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders? A Meta-Synthesis.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of children with autism often manage challenging behaviour by changing the environment and routine rather than the child. Strategies included avoiding triggers, giving in to demands to prevent meltdowns, and constant supervision. This reflects high family burden, not proven efficacy.
- PTOTOther2018The Tyneside Pegboard Test: development, validation, and observations in unilateral cerebral palsy.Developmental medicine and child neurologyThe Tyneside Pegboard Test measures bimanual coordination separately from hand speed. In children with unilateral cerebral palsy, bimanual scores correlate with affected-hand function, while dominant-hand speed does not. This test identifies coordination deficits that single-hand assessments miss.
- PTOther2018Gender difference in factors affecting the medial longitudinal arch height of the foot in healthy young adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn healthy young adults, foot arch height was associated with greater tibialis posterior strength in both sexes, and in women it was also associated with greater toe grip strength and lower hallux valgus angle and leg-heel alignment.
- Pilot2018Impaired Cognitive Performance in Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Knockout Mice After Ischemic Stroke: A Pilot Study.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationAfter experimental stroke in mice, eNOS-deficient mice that could swim learned the water maze more slowly and remembered the platform location less well. Many eNOS-deficient stroke mice could not perform the test because of movement problems.
- PTPilot2018Effects of circular gait training on balance, balance confidence in patients with stroke: a pilot study.Journal of physical therapy scienceTwo weeks of circular or straight gait training improved balance and confidence in stroke patients, but only the Timed Up and Go test differed between groups.
- SLPOther2018Theoretical Evaluation and Experimental Validation of Localized Therapeutic Hypothermia Application to Preserve Residual Hearing After Cochlear Implantation.Ear and hearingA cooling probe lowered cochlear temperatures toward mild hypothermia in human cadaveric temporal bones and a computer model, mainly at the round window, without cooling the mastoid surface. The paper reports temperature changes, not hearing preservation results.
- PTRCT2018Dose-Response Effects of Tai Chi and Physical Therapy Exercise Interventions in Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationNo significant difference in how quickly Tai Chi and physical therapy worked; both improved knee OA pain and function, with 20% response after 2 weeks and 50% response after 4 to 5 weeks.
- OTRCT2018Cognitive enhancement therapy for adult autism spectrum disorder: Results of an 18-month randomized clinical trial.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchBy 18 months, social-cognitive gains were not different between cognitive enhancement therapy and enriched supportive therapy. Cognitive enhancement therapy improved neurocognition more, and employment was more likely.
- SLPOther2018Effects of Varying Reverberation on Music Perception for Young Normal-Hearing and Old Hearing-Impaired Listeners.Trends in hearingOlder adults with hearing loss did not prefer a particular reverberation time in classical music and were less sensitive to reverberation differences than young normal-hearing listeners. Room acoustics may be less noticeable to them.
- PTPilot2018Quantifying Effect of Onabotulinum Toxin A on Passive Muscle Stiffness in Children with Cerebral Palsy Using Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 9 children with spastic cerebral palsy, calf ultrasound showed the BoNT-A stiffness effect faded between 1 and 3 months, but 1-month stiffness did not clearly differ from before, and ankle motion and spasticity did not clearly change.
- PTCase-Control2018Assessment of leg muscle activity using toe tapping in patients with Parkinson's disease: comparison of two types of toe tapping.Journal of physical therapy scienceClosed toe tapping did not separate groups by EMG values, except the first gastrocnemius reading was higher in Parkinson's patients. Open tapping showed higher tibialis anterior EMG burst values than controls. This small study is not enough to change care.
- PTOther2018The Central Sensitization Inventory and Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire: An exploration of construct validity and associations with widespread pain sensitivity among individuals with shoulder pain.Musculoskeletal science & practiceNeither CSI nor PSQ reliably identified widespread pain sensitivity in shoulder pain. PSQ had only weak remote pressure pain threshold links; CSI tracked distress and resilience more than sensory tests. Do not use them alone to infer central sensitization.
- OTSLPOther2018What About the Girls? Sex-Based Differences in Autistic Traits and Adaptive Skills.Journal of autism and developmental disordersBoys and girls with autism and no intellectual disability scored similarly on observed diagnostic tests, but parents rated girls as having stronger autistic traits and lower daily living skills.
- SLPOther2018Looking Behavior and Audiovisual Speech Understanding in Children With Normal Hearing and Children With Mild Bilateral or Unilateral Hearing Loss.Ear and hearingChildren with mild bilateral or unilateral hearing loss followed spoken instructions less accurately than normal-hearing peers in noisy multi-talker videos, but looking at talkers did not explain performance and hearing loss did not make children look more at relevant talkers.
- PTOther2018Relationship of Spinal Cord Injury Level and Duration to Peak Aerobic Capacity With Arms-Only and Hybrid Functional Electrical Stimulation Rowing.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationIn 24 people with spinal cord injury, FES-rowing, combining arm rowing with leg electrical stimulation, produced higher peak aerobic capacity than arms-only rowing, averaging 20.8% higher. Larger differences occurred with higher injury levels and injuries under 2 years.
- SLPCase-Control2018Abilities to Explicitly and Implicitly Infer Intentions from Actions in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with autism and IQ scores above 100 showed no clear group difference when choosing partners without being asked to infer intentions, but were worse at explicitly naming whether hand actions were deliberate or accidental. Eye gaze was typical.
- PTOther2018New estimation model of the initial lower limb angle to improve angle estimation during the extension phase of standing-up movement.Journal of physical therapy scienceA foot-pressure plate estimated seated thigh and lower-leg angles within 2.78 to 5.98 degrees and 4.87 to 6.31 degrees compared with camera-measured movement in seven healthy male volunteers. Angle feedback could help physical therapists train standing-up, but patients were not tested.
- Narrative Review2018Optimizing Outcome Assessment in Multicenter TBI Trials: Perspectives From TRACK-TBI and the TBI Endpoints Development Initiative. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationNo patient outcomes are reported. This methodological review offers advice for reducing measurement error in large TBI trials, not evidence that any treatment works.
- SLPCohort2017Cytokine levels and associations with symptom severity in male and female children with autism spectrum disorder.Molecular autismLower blood levels of several cytokines were linked to more severe autism symptoms in girls, and a growth factor was linked to severity in boys. Sleep and gut symptoms did not show the same pattern.
