- SLPCohort2017Modelling gesture use and early language development in autism spectrum disorder.International journal of language & communication disordersIn 197 children, gestures and fine motor scores formed one gesture measure strongly linked to current language. In 36 children with autism followed up, early gestures were linked to later caregiver-reported receptive language, but not to later observed receptive language or expressive language.
- PTOther2018Limb-dominance and gender differences in the ground reaction force during single-leg lateral jump-landings.Journal of physical therapy scienceFemales showed higher vertical and medial landing forces during sideways one-leg landings. Medial forces were higher on the non-dominant leg, but vertical force did not differ by leg dominance. These are lab force differences, not proven injury risk.
- PTRCT2018The effects of shoulder stabilization exercises and pectoralis minor stretching on balance and maximal shoulder muscle strength of healthy young adults with round shoulder posture.Journal of physical therapy scienceBetween groups, neither balance nor maximal shoulder muscle strength improved more than the other. Within groups, some balance and strength measures improved, but this small study did not show either program was better.
- PTCase-Control2018Effect of squatting velocity on hip muscle latency in women with patellofemoral pain syndrome.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn young women with patellofemoral knee pain, posterior gluteus medius timing differed during single-leg squats. Healthy women activated it later when squatting slowly; women with pain did not change timing with speed. This is a muscle timing difference, not evidence that squat speed treats pain.
- SLPCase-Control2018Measuring discourse coherence in anomic aphasia using Rhetorical Structure Theory.International journal of speech-language pathologyCantonese speakers with anomic aphasia told stories and described procedures that listeners rated less understandable and less clear. They used fewer meaningful units and made more word errors, so therapy may need word-level targets as well as discourse.
- PTCohort2018Feasibility and Reliability of Functional Muscle Tests in Lung Transplant Recipients.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationBack extension and handgrip strength tests were feasible and repeatable among lung transplant recipients soon after surgery. The Biering-Sørensen endurance test was not feasible for seven patients initially and ten more weak patients before rehabilitation.
- PTOther2018Relationship between advanced glycation end-product accumulation in the skin and pulmonary function.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn older adults with normal spirometry, higher skin AGE buildup and more pack-years were linked to lower FEV1/FVC. In younger adults, skin AGE buildup was not linked to FEV1/FVC. This is an association, not proof of cause.
- OTSLPSystematic Review2018Parents Suggest Which Indicators of Progress and Outcomes Should be Measured in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of young children with autism valued measuring happiness, anxiety, sensory discomfort, distress, aggression, sleep problems and parent stress, not only core social communication symptoms. They wanted assessments to capture daily living and family impact.
- OTCohort2018Quality of Relationships With Caregivers, Depression, and Life Satisfaction After Dysvascular Lower Extremity Amputation.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationAfter first lower-limb amputation, people with more conflict with their main caregiver reported more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction. Caregiver support related to life satisfaction but not depression. Ask about strain in the relationship.
- SLPCohort2018Anomalous network architecture of the resting brain in children who stutter.Journal of fluency disordersChildren who stutter had less coordinated connectivity in a resting brain network and unusual links with attention and movement networks. One early pattern was associated with stuttering that did not recover. No clinical test or treatment is shown.
- PTOTCase-Control2018Effects of anterior weight-shifting methods on sitting balance in wheelchair-dependent patients with spinal cord injury.Journal of physical therapy scienceWheelchair users with spinal cord injury reached further forward and moved their center of pressure more when extending arms than crossing them. Adding a ball changed little for them, unlike healthy adults. Arm position matters more than holding an object for sitting balance.
- PTRCT2018Effects of mechanical-bed massage on exercise-induced back fatigue in athletes.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 12 athletes, mechanical-bed massage lowered perceived back fatigue compared with rest. Back muscle endurance did not differ, and some heart-rate measures changed immediately.
- SLPNarrative Review2018Gastrointestinal symptoms in autism spectrum disorder: A review of the literature on ascertainment and prevalence.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchGut symptom rates in autism research vary wildly because studies ask different people using different questions. No autism-specific gut questionnaire has been checked enough to be trusted as a symptom measure, so reported rates are unreliable.
- SLPCase-Control2018Working memory in school-age children with and without a persistent speech sound disorder.International journal of speech-language pathologyChildren with persistent speech sound disorders repeated made-up words less accurately than peers, and lower nonverbal intelligence scores were linked to this difference. Visual-spatial and inhibition task performance did not differ.
- SLPQualitative2017Aphasia and literacy-the insider's perspective.International journal of language & communication disordersPeople with aphasia described reading and writing as an ongoing recovery process. They practised literacy for communication, information and pleasure, and wanted therapy to be meaningful, individual and tied to everyday life.
- SLPCohort2017Social Responsiveness Scale Assessment of the Preterm Behavioral Phenotype in 10-Year-Olds Born Extremely Preterm.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPTen-year-olds born before 28 weeks without autism had social impairment more often than expected. They also more often had cognitive, language, communication, attention, anxiety, and behavior problems, even when IQ was normal.
- PTPilot2017Configurable, wearable sensing and vibrotactile feedback system for real-time postural balance and gait training: proof-of-concept.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationHealthy older adults used a small wearable vibration system to reduce trunk sway during balance exercises and change toe-in or toe-out walking angles in a single session. This shows feasibility, not treatment benefit.
- SLPSystematic Review2017Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Individuals with Mucopolysaccharide Disease Type III (Sanfilippo Syndrome): A Systematic Review.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn 16 studies of 620 people with Sanfilippo syndrome, speech, language and social problems were consistently reported. Only two studies used standard autism assessments; 13 of 21 and 9 of 10 participants met autism diagnostic criteria.
- PTOTOther2017Adaptive hybrid robotic system for rehabilitation of reaching movement after a brain injury: a usability study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationTracking performance improved during assisted reaching sessions with a hybrid exoskeleton and electrical stimulation in brain injury patients, and it was higher with stimulation than without. Satisfaction was high. This supports usability, not functional recovery.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Behavioral Markers of Emergent Stranger Anxiety in Infants and Toddlers with Fragile X Syndrome.Journal of autism and developmental disordersInfants with Fragile X showed less facial fear than controls. Within the group, stable distress vocalizations linked to later social withdrawal, while lower escape behaviors linked to higher autistic symptoms. These markers did not predict general anxiety.
- SLPOther2017Combined Electric and Acoustic Stimulation With Hearing Preservation: Effect of Cochlear Implant Low-Frequency Cutoff on Speech Understanding and Perceived Listening Difficulty.Ear and hearingSetting the cochlear implant low-frequency cutoff affected speech understanding in noise. For 9 of 13 ears, a cutoff near the frequency where hearing reached 70 dB HL worked better than the 90 dB HL software recommendation. Patient preference did not always match best performance.
- SLPCase-Control2017Screening for Autism with the SRS and SCQ: Variations across Demographic, Developmental and Behavioral Factors in Preschool Children.Journal of autism and developmental disordersBoth the SCQ and SRS were adequate overall for screening autism risk in preschoolers, but false positives rose for children of lower-income, less-educated, African American or Hispanic mothers, and for children with developmental or behavior challenges.
- SLPOther2017A Quantitative Study of Right Dislocation in Cantonese Spoken Discourse.Language and speechCantonese right dislocations were uncommon in monologue, most frequent in personal recounts and lowest in sandwich descriptions, and mostly near narrative ends. Explicit emotion did not explain their use. SLPs may see more of these structures in less structured tasks.
- OTSLPRCT2017Effect of Caregiver Training on the Neurodevelopment of HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children and Caregiver Mental Health: A Ugandan Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPCaregiver cognitive-stimulation training did not improve overall child development compared with health and nutrition training. All children received nutrition support. It worsened reported executive function problems and caregiver depression.
- OTSLPCohort2017Autism Spectrum Disorders and Low Mental Age: Diagnostic Stability and Developmental Outcomes in Early Childhood.Journal of autism and developmental disordersVery young children with autism and language and reasoning below 12 months kept an autism diagnosis, but made far less progress in communication, play, and daily skills than other autism groups.
- SLPCohort2017Pitch Strength as an Outcome Measure for Treatment of Dysphonia.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationComputer estimates of voice pitch clarity rose after treatment, and the number of steady, near-regular vowel segments increased in 30 patients. This may help track voice change, but the study did not compare pitch strength with clinician ratings or other measures.
- PTOther2018Effects of thoracic posture correction exercises on scapular position.Journal of physical therapy scienceThoracic extension exercises reduced measured kyphosis angle and scapular forward distance in 10 young adults after 12 days. No control group was used, so this does not prove the exercises caused the change.
- PTOther2018The effect of gait speed and gait phase to the allocation of attention during dual task gait.Journal of physical therapy scienceWalking slower on a treadmill made healthy young men respond more slowly to a tone. Their walking also became less automatic. Gait phase did not change response time.
- PTOther2018Effect of interferential current therapy on forward head posture.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter 4 weeks of interferential current, the changes did not differ significantly between forward head posture and normal head posture groups, although forward head posture angles decreased within both groups, so this uncontrolled study cannot show that interferential current caused the changes.
- PTCase-Control2018Postural stability for taekwondo athletes with repetitive ankle sprains during a single-leg stance.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn taekwondo athletes with repeated ankle sprains, injured-limb sway did not differ from controls during an eyes-closed single-leg stance. Uninjured-limb sway was greater than controls.
- PTRCT2018Comparision of the effectiveness of ESWT and ultrasound treatments in myofascial pain syndrome: randomized, sham-controlled study.Journal of physical therapy scienceShock wave therapy and ultrasound were similar for myofascial pain. Both were better than sham shock wave. Exercise was given to all, so its contribution cannot be separated.
- SLPOther2018The parents' perspective of the early diagnostic period of their child with hearing loss: information and support.International journal of audiologyMost parents of newly diagnosed children with hearing loss were satisfied with support and information, but comments and interviews described shock, delays, confusing service roles, and pressure to choose early intervention quickly.
- Cohort2018Routine Urine Testing at the Spinal Cord Injury Annual Evaluation Leads to Unnecessary Antibiotic Use: A Pilot Study and Future Directions.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationPositive urine cultures at spinal cord injury annual evaluations were linked to antibiotic use, even when the culture represented asymptomatic bacteriuria. 36% of those asymptomatic cases were treated, and no clear difference in 60-day health care use was found.
- PTRCT2018Effects of stabilization exercise using flexi-bar on functional disability and transverse abdominis thickness in patients with chronic low back pain.Journal of physical therapy sciencePain, disability and transverse abdominis activation capacity improved more with Flexi-bar than with stabilization exercise alone, but thickness did not increase more.
- OTNarrative Review2018Neurophysiological mechanisms and functional impact of mirror movements in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy.Developmental medicine and child neurologyMirror movements in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy may reflect abnormal wiring from the uninjured side of the brain to both hands. They are linked to poorer hand use, but these links do not prove cause or predict therapy response.
- PTRCT2017Effects of continuous visual feedback during sitting balance training in chronic stroke survivors.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationWhen the screen was removed after training, chronic stroke survivors did not improve balance without feedback. They did improve while the screen was on.
- Narrative Review2017On neuromechanical approaches for the study of biological and robotic grasp and manipulation.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationThere is nothing here to change therapy practice. No patient data, tested intervention, or outcome is reported in this conceptual review of biological and robotic grasp and manipulation.
- OTPilot2017Wireless intraoral tongue control of an assistive robotic arm for individuals with tetraplegia.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA person with tetraplegia used a tongue interface and robotic arm system to touch a tape roll in 100% of attempts and lift it in 50%. This is a small demonstration, not evidence it works for daily life.
- OTOther2017Caregiver Input to Optimize the Design of a Pediatric Care Planning Guide for Rehabilitation: Descriptive Study.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesCaregivers of young children mostly completed a phone care-planning guide: 22 of 25 set a goal and 24 of 25 identified strategies, but only 12 of 25 linked the steps into a full plan. This is feasibility, not evidence that the guide improves participation.
- PTOther2017Standing on slopes - how current microprocessor-controlled prosthetic feet support transtibial and transfemoral amputees in an everyday task.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationOn 10° slopes, prosthetic feet that fully adapted and locked dorsiflexion let amputees stand in an almost natural manner with load closer to non-amputees. This small biomechanical study did not test falls, pain, or daily function.
- Narrative Review2017Robot-assisted assessment of muscle strength.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationThis paper offers design recommendations for robotic muscle assessment but reports no clinical data. It does not tell therapists whether these devices work for patients.
- PTNarrative Review2017Skeletal muscle mechanics, energetics and plasticity.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSpastic muscles in stroke and cerebral palsy have altered architecture and stiffness, and ultrasound stiffness tests may help separate passive from nerve-related stiffness. This review does not show that any treatment works.
- SLPOther2017Brief Report: Relationship Between ADOS-2, Module 4 Calibrated Severity Scores (CSS) and Social and Non-Social Standardized Assessment Measures in Adult Males with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn 40 adult males with autism, ADOS-2 severity scores did not line up with self or parent reports of social difficulties. They did line up with IQ, especially verbal ability, so higher social affect scores went with lower verbal IQ.
- OTSurvey2017Mental Wellbeing of Family Members of Autistic Adults.Journal of autism and developmental disordersMany family members of autistic adults reported worry, anxiety, stress and depression. Their own difficulty with uncertainty, plus the adult's mental health and lack of future preparedness, were associated with poorer wellbeing.
- PTOther2017Paretic versus non-paretic stepping responses following pelvis perturbations in walking chronic-stage stroke survivors.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn ten chronic stroke survivors, first recovery steps after sideways pelvis pushes changed similarly with the paretic and non-paretic legs. The paretic foot landed further from the body centre, and more time was spent on the non-paretic leg.
- OTSLPCohort2017Academic Achievement Deficits and Their Neuropsychological Correlates in Children Born Extremely Preterm.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPAt school age, children born extremely preterm whose IQ scores were above the impaired range had more low math scores than low reading scores. Language and naming speed tracked reading. Working memory, inhibition and visual skills tracked math.
- SLPOther2017Human Frequency Following Responses to Vocoded Speech.Ear and hearingBrainstem pitch responses in normal-hearing adults were stronger with 500-Hz amplitude cues, increased from 1 to 4 channels, plateaued at 8 and 16 channels, fell at 32 channels, and sine and noise carriers made no difference.
- SLPCohort2017Language Outcomes in Deaf or Hard of Hearing Teenagers Who Are Spoken Language Users: Effects of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Confirmation.Ear and hearingOverall teenage spoken language scores were not better with newborn hearing screening or confirmation by 9 months. Early confirmation was linked to better receptive language in teenagers without cochlear implants.
- PTOTCase Series2017Cognitive functioning over 2 years after intracerebral hemorrhage in school-aged children.Developmental medicine and child neurologyMotor function improved after childhood intracerebral hemorrhage, and some reasoning skills reached average range, but working memory stayed low and processing speed lagged peers. Motor recovery may mask cognitive needs, so plan serial cognitive testing.
- PTOTOther2017Pattern of improvement in upper limb pointing task kinematics after a 3-month training program with robotic assistance in stroke.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAfter 3 months of combined robot-assisted shoulder/elbow training and conventional occupational therapy, upper-limb scores and robot-measured reaching improved. Shoulder/elbow improved before wrist/hand; distance, velocity and smoothness improved before accuracy. The study cannot separate the two treatments.
