- OTPilot2016Feasibility and Potential Benefits of a Web-Based Intervention Delivered Acutely After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Adolescents: A Pilot Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationAdolescents with mild head injury using a web-based program combining symptom monitoring, anticipatory guidance, psychoeducation, activity pacing and cognitive-behavioral principles saw daily symptom scores fall by 2.0 points per day early on, but no control group means benefit cannot be attributed.
- OTSLPCohort2016Effects of Depression and Antidepressant Use on Cognitive Deficits and Functional Cognition Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationIn severe TBI, depression was not linked to worse cognitive test scores, but people with depression reported more everyday cognitive limitations. Antidepressant use was linked to worse cognitive scores, not necessarily causing them.
- PTOther2017The effect of spinal position on sciatic nerve excursion during seated neural mobilisation exercises: an in vivo study using ultrasound imaging. The Journal of manual & manipulative therapyIn healthy adults, slump-sitting did not reduce sciatic nerve movement during seated neural mobilisation compared with upright-sitting.
- SLPOther2017The Benefits of Increased Sensation Level and Bandwidth for Spatial Release From Masking.Ear and hearingSpeech recognition thresholds improved when the target was at a higher level and when competing talkers were spatially separated. When audibility was equated across frequencies, bandwidth also helped, but this was a lab study, not hearing aid fitting.
- PTOther2017Intra- and inter-rater reliability of neutral head position and target head position tests in patients with and without neck pain.Brazilian journal of physical therapyInexpensive inclinometer tests of neck position sense gave consistent readings when repeated by the same therapist or used by another therapist. People with neck pain made larger repositioning errors than healthy people in most directions.
- SLPOther2017Gradient perception of children's productions of /s/ and /θ/: A comparative study of rating methods.Clinical linguistics & phoneticsAdult listeners' line ratings of children's /s/ and /θ/ productions varied across the whole scale and tracked how a group heard the sounds. A single rating line may capture fine sound detail that a simple /s/ or /θ/ choice misses.
- PTSystematic Review2017Effects of monochromatic infrared phototherapy in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.Brazilian journal of physical therapyInfrared light therapy did not improve plantar sensitivity or neuropathic pain compared to sham. A small sensitivity benefit appeared only in the first two weeks and was not sustained. The evidence quality is low, and this treatment is not currently supported for diabetic neuropathy.
- OTSLPCohort2017The salience of the self: Self-referential processing and internalizing problems in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchYouth with autism showed reduced self-positivity and weaker memory for self-relevant information. However, positive self-views protected against anxiety and depression in all children, but only if they had strong memory for self-relevant details.
- OTCohort2017Changes in Food Selectivity in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of 18 children with autism reported fewer refused foods and less difficult mealtime behavior after about 6.4 years, but food variety did not increase and more children were overweight or obese.
- PTOTCase Report2017The effects of neck and trunk stabilization exercises on cerebral palsy children's static and dynamic trunk balance: case series.Journal of physical therapy scienceEleven children with cerebral palsy did better on sitting trunk-control scores after eight weeks of twice-weekly sessions that included neck and trunk stabilization. But there was no control group, so this cannot show the exercises caused the gain.
- Other2017Attentional Differences in a Driving Hazard Perception Task in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with autism were slower to first look at hazards in driving videos, but identified similar numbers and responded just as quickly after looking. The delay was in finding hazards, not in pressing the key.
- PTNarrative Review2017Beneficial effect of interventional exercise on autistic Fragile X syndrome.Journal of physical therapy scienceThis review summarizes existing evidence suggesting physical exercise may help brain function in autism and Fragile X syndrome, citing animal models and prior small studies. It presents no new clinical trial data or patient outcomes from this work alone.
- PTPilot2017Effects of hippotherapy on the thickness of deep abdominal muscles and activity of daily living in children with intellectual disabilities.Journal of physical therapy scienceSeven children with intellectual disabilities had greater transverse abdominis thickness and higher daily-living independence scores after 12 hippotherapy sessions over 6 weeks; other abdominal muscles did not change.
- PTRCT2017The effects of a multisensory dynamic balance training on the thickness of lower limb muscles in ultrasonography in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceChildren with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy who practised a screen-based balance game showed greater increases in several lower-limb muscle thicknesses than children who received general physiotherapy. The study measured muscle size, not walking or function.
- PTOTSLPOther2017Factors Associated with Self-Injurious Behaviors in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Findings from Two Large National Samples.Journal of autism and developmental disordersSelf-injury in children with autism is linked to sleep problems, sensory issues, aggression, anxiety, and lower adaptive skills. It is also associated with younger age and lower socioeconomic status. These findings support asking about self-injury when these other behaviors or factors are present.
- SLPCohort2017Prospective Study of Gastroesophageal Reflux, Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors and H2-Receptor Antagonists, and Risk of Hearing Loss.Ear and hearingFrequent and long-standing reflux symptoms were associated with higher self-reported hearing loss. Reflux medicines were not associated after reflux symptoms were taken into account.
- SLPOther2017Modulation of Upper Esophageal Sphincter (UES) Relaxation and Opening During Volume Swallowing.DysphagiaIn eight healthy adults, swallowing larger volumes changed how the upper esophageal sphincter opened. At 20 ml, the bolus itself pushed the sphincter open before the submental muscles peaked. This suggests 20 ml exceeds the optimal single-swallow volume.
- PTOther2017Role of Hip Abductor Muscle Composition and Torque in Protective Stepping for Lateral Balance Recovery in Older Adults.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationOlder adults who recovered balance by stepping toward the midline had weaker hip abductors and more fatty infiltration than those who crossed their legs. This suggests hip strength relates to the ability to perform the more complex cross-step strategy.
- Other2017Burden of USA hospital charges for traumatic brain injury.Brain injuryTBI hospital charges rose from 2006 to 2010, reaching $21.4 billion for 318,011 admissions and $8.2 billion for 2.2 million discharge or transfer visits. West region, trauma centres, non-pediatric hospitals, metropolitan areas, and investor-owned hospitals were associated with higher charges.
- PTOTCase Report2017Reduced foot pain after spasticity control with alcohol block in a patient with chronic hemiparetic stroke: a case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceA 58-year-old woman with chronic stroke and severe foot pain from a Tailor's bunion reported pain dropping from 8/10 to 1/10 after alcohol nerve blocks reduced her ankle spasticity. The block was combined with stretching, so the independent effect of the alcohol injection remains unclear.
- PTOTSLPOther2017Are heart rate dynamics in the transition from rest to submaximal exercise related to maximal cardiorespiratory responses in COPD?Brazilian journal of physical therapyIn 15 men with moderate-to-severe COPD, how much heart rate variability changed from standing rest to a six-minute walk correlated with how far they walked. A stronger shift in autonomic balance predicted longer distance. This is an observational link, not proof that heart rate tests can replace walking tests.
- PTOther2017The influence of continuous versus interval walking exercise on knee joint loading and pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.Gait & postureIn 27 adults with knee OA, continuous and interval walking increased knee load similarly, but only continuous 45-minute walking raised pain. The same walking split into three 15-minute bouts with rest did not.
- SLPQualitative2017"It was like walking without knowing where I was going": A Qualitative Study of Autism in a UK Somali Migrant Community.Journal of autism and developmental disordersSomali parents in Bristol said autism was a new word, and stigma, faith and family advice made acceptance hard. They faced confusing diagnosis, language barriers and fragmented services, so help was delayed. Parents asked for Somali link workers and clear explanations.
- SLPOther2016Human Envelope Following Responses to Amplitude Modulation: Effects of Aging and Modulation Depth.Ear and hearingOlder adults did not differ from young adults in detecting loudness fluctuations. The oldest adults’ brain responses changed shape and timing as fluctuations increased, and brain-response thresholds tracked detection ability.
- SLPOther2016Exploratory analysis of real personal emergency response call conversations: considerations for personal emergency response spoken dialogue systems.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn real emergency calls, older adults spoke more slowly, used shorter turns and more one-word answers than care providers. High-risk calls had fewer words, fewer turns and shorter response times. This describes speech patterns, not tested interventions.
- OTRCT2016Benefits of virtual reality based cognitive rehabilitation through simulated activities of daily living: a randomized controlled trial with stroke patients.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationStroke patients who used virtual reality daily living tasks improved more on a global cognitive test than patients doing conventional paper tasks. The study was small, and assessors knew which treatment was given. Use it as a signal, not proof.
- SLPOther2016Cerebellar gray matter differentiates children with early language delay in autism.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchIn children with autism, early language delay was associated with reduced left cerebellar gray matter; both autism groups showed reduced right cerebellar gray matter compared with typically developing children.
- Other2017Size Constancy is Preserved but Afterimages are Prolonged in Typical Individuals with Higher Degrees of Self-Reported Autistic Traits.Journal of autism and developmental disordersSize constancy was unaffected by autistic traits in typical adults. Afterimage duration was longer in people with higher autistic traits. Vividness was not related to autistic traits.
- SLPOther2017The Acoustics of Word-Initial Fricatives and Their Effect on Word-Level Intelligibility in Children With Bilateral Cochlear Implants.Ear and hearingChildren with cochlear implants produced /s/ and /ʃ/ with less acoustic contrast than hearing peers. In noise, their /s/ words were harder to understand than their /ʃ/ words, but there was no significant difference between the two groups for either sound alone.
- OTSLPCohort2017Mid-childhood outcomes of infant siblings at familial high-risk of autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research15 of 42 high-risk siblings met autism criteria at age 7; they had lower adaptive behaviour and more ADHD and anxiety than low-risk controls. The 24 high-risk siblings without autism had typical-range IQ and language but more separation anxiety.
- PTSurvey2017Identification of intervention categories for aquatic physical therapy in pediatrics using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth: a global expert survey.Brazilian journal of physical therapyAquatic physical therapists agreed on functioning categories they target in children, especially gait, body position, joint movement, muscle tone, and family support. This is expert agreement, not evidence that aquatic therapy works.
- PTRCT2017Functional electrical stimulation improves muscle strength and endurance in patients after cardiac surgery: a randomized controlled trial.Brazilian journal of physical therapyAfter cardiac surgery, electrical stimulation plus added load did not improve six-minute walk distance more than placebo. Walk distance rose in both groups, while the protocol increased thigh strength and sit-to-stand endurance.
- Other2017Brief Report: A Comparison of the Preference for Viewing Social and Non-social Movies in Typical and Autistic Adolescents.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAcross the whole sample, choices were driven mainly by how hard the box was to open; whether a participant had autism did not explain the overall pattern. In the autism group alone, object movies were preferred over adult-face movies.
- SLPCohort2017ADHD severity as it relates to comorbid psychiatric symptomatology in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).Research in developmental disabilitiesIn 99 children with autism, the severity of ADHD symptoms, not the severity of autism itself, predicted the number and intensity of other psychiatric problems. Clinicians should assess ADHD severity to identify risk for comorbid anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues.
- PTOTRCT2017The Effect of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation on Shoulder Biomechanics: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Comparison to Physical Therapy.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationBoth peripheral nerve stimulation and physical therapy improved shoulder strength and range of motion in stroke patients, but neither treatment was superior to the other for these biomechanical changes. Since PNS previously reduced pain more than PT, the pain relief likely stems from mechanisms other than improved shoulder mechanics.
- PTCohort2017Prevalence and Etiology of Hypogonadism in Young Men With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Cross-Sectional Analysis From Two University-Based Rehabilitation Centers.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationYoung men with chronic spinal cord injury had low testosterone: 25% by total testosterone and 36% by free testosterone. Low total testosterone was more common than in age-matched men without injury. Tetraplegia, older age, and higher body fat were associated with lower testosterone.
- SLPOther2017Increasing Opportunities for Question-Asking in School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Effectiveness of Staff Training in Pivotal Response Treatment.Journal of autism and developmental disordersTraining inpatient staff in Pivotal Response Treatment increased one-to-one opportunities for children with autism to ask questions. However, these skills did not generalize to group settings, and only a minority of children maintained the question-asking behavior at six-month follow-up.
- SLPSystematic Review2017Psychological Therapy for People with Tinnitus: A Scoping Review of Treatment Components.Ear and hearingTwenty-five themes of psychological therapy components for tinnitus were cataloged across 64 records. The review did not show which components work, and no included trial clearly tested therapy delivered by audiologists.
- SLPOther2017Divergence of Age-Related Differences in Social-Communication: Improvements for Typically Developing Youth but Declines for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersOlder typically developing youth were rated as having fewer social communication difficulties. Older youth with autism without intellectual disability were rated as having more difficulties in the main analysis, but not when groups were similar in IQ and sex.
- PTOTSurvey2017Prevalence and factors associated with neck pain: a population-based study.Brazilian journal of physical therapyAbout one in five adults reported neck pain in the past year. It was more common in those who were widowed or separated, had low income or education, worked while sitting and leaning, or had two or more other diseases.
- PTRCT2017Resistance training improves aortic structure in Wistar rats.Brazilian journal of physical therapyIn rats, 12 weeks of weighted ladder training increased aortic wall thickness, smooth muscle nuclei, elastic laminae and collagen. Body weight and blood pressure did not differ. The findings are about rat aortas, not human patients.
- SLPCase-Control2017Prenatal toxoplasmosis antibody and childhood autism.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchMothers with T. gondii IgM antibodies were less likely to have a child with autism, but only a few mothers had these antibodies. Children of mothers with IgG antibodies did not show a clear increase in autism risk.
- SLPOther2017Age-Related Differences in Listening Effort During Degraded Speech Recognition.Ear and hearingOlder adults made more mistakes than younger adults on a visual task while repeating degraded sentences, but reaction time did not show the same difference. Sentence recognition itself was largely similar between the groups.
- PTOther2017Description of interventions is under-reported in physical therapy clinical trials.Brazilian journal of physical therapyOnly 35 of 100 physical therapy RCTs fully described both experimental and control interventions. Control procedures were poorly described, so clinicians may not know what patients actually received.
- PTOTOther2017Tele-Assessment of the Berg Balance Scale: Effects of Transmission Characteristics.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationRemote balance assessment works if you use high-definition video with slow motion and capture both frontal and lateral views. Standard-definition or single-view setups caused significant rating failures, particularly for transfers, standing with eyes closed, feet together, and reaching forward.
- SLPSurvey2017Prevalence of Hearing Loss Among a Representative Sample of Canadian Children and Adolescents, 3 to 19 Years of Age.Ear and hearingIn Canadian children and adolescents aged 6 to 19, 7.7% had measured hearing loss in one or more ears. Most loss was unilateral and mild, so parents and teachers may not notice it.
- OTCase-Control2017Ensemble perception of color in autistic adults.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAutistic adults were better than typical adults at spotting which individual colors had appeared in a brief set. They judged average color similarly overall, but were less accurate for four-color sets.
- PTProtocol2017A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of patient education for acute low back pain (PREVENT Trial): statistical analysis plan.Brazilian journal of physical therapyNo results are reported. This paper describes planned statistical analyses for a trial of patient education for acute low back pain.
- PTOTCohort2017Does Corticospinal Tract Connectivity Influence the Response to Intensive Bimanual Therapy in Children With Unilateral Cerebral Palsy?Neurorehabilitation and neural repairCorticospinal tract pattern did not predict who improved more after intensive bimanual therapy, with lower extremity training at one site. Children with ipsilateral and contralateral patterns improved similarly on several hand function and daily activity measures.
- PTOther2016Effects of variable practice on the motor learning outcomes in manual wheelchair propulsion.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAble-bodied novice wheelchair users who practised five skill tasks and wheelchair basketball over 8 weeks increased mechanical efficiency by 1.2%, unlike controls. Propulsion technique improved similarly in both groups, so variable practice did not clearly change technique.
