- SLPOther2016The Effect of Microphone Placement on Interaural Level Differences and Sound Localization Across the Horizontal Plane in Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users.Ear and hearingAfter brief testing, 8 bilateral cochlear implant users had larger level differences between ears and slightly better sound localization with in-ear microphones than behind-ear or shoulder placement. The gain was small, and not every user improved.
- SLPOther2016Top-Down Processes in Simulated Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect of Linguistic Context on Bimodal Benefit for Temporally Interrupted Speech.Ear and hearingWhen speech is chopped by silence, adding low-frequency sound to the other ear helps more if the sentences are predictable. This suggests clinical tests for bimodal hearing should use high-context sentences to avoid missing real-world benefits.
- OTCohort2017Activity Limitation Stages Are Associated With Risk of Hospitalization Among Medicare Beneficiaries.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationHigher ADL and IADL limitation stages were associated with higher risk of a first hospitalization in the next year among older Medicare beneficiaries living in the community. Baseline stage was not associated with second, third, or fourth hospitalizations.
- SLPOther2017Characterization of Flow-resistant Tubes Used for Semi-occluded Vocal Tract Voice Training and Therapy.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationTube diameter, not length, mainly controls pressure behind the lips during semi-occluded voice training. Diameter 2.5 to 4.9 mm gave higher pressures at speech-like flows, and mouth shape changed pressure only slightly.
- SLPCohort2017Parent-Endorsed Sex Differences in Toddlers with and Without ASD: Utilizing the M-CHAT.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAt 18 months, parents reported fewer failed M-CHAT items for girls without ASD than boys, but more failed items for girls with ASD than boys. Item patterns changed after accounting for total failures.
- PTOther2017A quasi-experimental study on the effects of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization on mechanosensitive neurons.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter 10 minutes of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization on healthy thigh skin, people needed a wider gap to feel two skin points, while pain threshold and thigh size did not change. This does not show a clinical benefit.
- SLPOther2017The Effect of False Vocal Folds on Laryngeal Flow Resistance in a Tubular Three-dimensional Computational Laryngeal Model.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationFalse vocal folds lowered simulated airflow resistance by 3.05% and reduced simulated noise in a computer model of human voice production. This was not a patient trial, so it does not show a therapy works.
- PTOTRCT2017Changes of gait parameters following constrained-weight shift training in patients with stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceA 10 mm shoe lift on the unaffected side forced weight onto the paretic leg. This improved walking speed and step length more than standard care. The 5 mm lift did not show significant improvement over the control group.
- SLPCohort2017Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Sotos Syndrome.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn 78 people with Sotos syndrome, 65 had parent-reported autism symptom scores in a clinical range. Restricted interests and repetitive behaviour scores were higher than social communication scores. Gender did not affect severity.
- PTOther2017The relationship between knee joint angle and knee flexor and extensor muscle strength.Journal of physical therapy scienceKnee extension strength was higher at 67° than at 25° in female students. Knee flexion strength was higher at 25°, but the right side did not differ. Angle changes which muscle action is strongest.
- Qualitative2017Clinical assessment of decision-making capacity in acquired brain injury with personality change.Neuropsychological rehabilitationMen with brain injury and personality change could show awareness of deficits in interview, yet awareness often did not guide decisions at the time. Assess capacity by asking whether awareness is usable during deliberation, not only whether it is present.
- PTOTSLPQualitative2017Traumatic brain injury caregivers: A qualitative analysis of spouse and parent perspectives on quality of life.Neuropsychological rehabilitationParents describe returning to parenting a child and fear for the future, while partners report losing intimacy and the stress of making decisions alone. Both groups feel isolated and overwhelmed. These distinct burdens mean you should assess parents and spouses separately rather than treating all caregivers as one group.
- Other2017The Single-Case Reporting Guideline In BEhavioural Interventions (SCRIBE) 2016 Statement.Neuropsychological rehabilitationSCRIBE 2016 sets 26 minimum reporting items for single-case experimental design studies in behavioural sciences. It was developed through expert ratings and a consensus meeting, not from patient outcome trials.
- PTCohort2017Gait abnormalities in patients with chronic ankle instability can improve following a non-invasive biomechanical therapy: a retrospective analysis.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 33 patients with chronic ankle instability, walking speed, step length, cadence, and ankle scores improved after 3 months using a foot-worn device. They still walked differently from healthy controls, and no untreated group was included, so the device was not proven to work.
- PTOther2017The change of lung capacity in elderly women caused by life span.Journal of physical therapy scienceNon-smoking women with no lung disease history in older age groups had lower lung capacity and airflow than younger age groups. This gives reference values, not proof exercise works.
- PTOTRCT2017Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy symptoms (CIPN): a preliminary case-control study.Journal of physical therapy scienceActive TENS did not reduce numbness, tingling, or interference with daily life more than placebo TENS over 45 days in 24 cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. This small randomized trial does not support active TENS as an add-on.
- OTSLPCohort2017Predictors of Parent Responsiveness to 1-Year-Olds At-Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of 12-month-olds at risk for autism who were less responsive to sensory input and communicated less tended to talk less and play more physically. This shift may reduce verbal language input during a critical period for communication development.
- SLPOther2017Validation and Evaluation of the Effects of Semi-Occluded Face Mask Straw Phonation Therapy Methods on Aerodynamic Parameters in Comparison to Traditional Methods.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationAdding a face mask to a tube and airflow system did not change the pressure and flow needed to start vocal fold vibration in excised dog larynges. It may allow continuous speech, but that was not tested in people.
- SLPPilot2016Brief Report: Evaluation of an Intelligent Learning Environment for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersA gaze-based prompt system was tolerated by all 16 young children in a pilot. Toddlers with ASD turned toward their name on every trial, usually after one name call. It shows feasibility, not proven therapy.
- SLPMeta-Analysis2016Hearing Instruments for Unilateral Severe-to-Profound Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.Ear and hearingHearing devices for adults with one severely deaf ear can improve speech in some noisy setups and reduce self-reported listening difficulty, but they do not reliably restore sound location and can worsen speech when noise is on the deaf side.
- PTOTSLPPilot2016Global cognitive function and processing speed are associated with gait and balance dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn 14 people with Parkinson's, lower global cognitive scores correlated with slower walking and more sway. Processing speed specifically linked to turning difficulty. No control group and tiny sample mean these associations are hypotheses, not evidence of cause.
- OTOther2016Drawing Firmer Conclusions: Autistic Children Show No Evidence of a Local Processing Bias in a Controlled Copying Task.Journal of autism and developmental disordersCopying accuracy was similar in autistic and typical children. Both groups were less accurate when corners were skewed, and there was no sign of a detail-focused copying bias.
- SLPOther2016Changes in the Compressive Nonlinearity of the Cochlea During Early Aging: Estimates From Distortion OAE Input/Output Functions.Ear and hearingMiddle-aged ears showed less cochlear compression than young ears. The response grew over a wider range of sound levels before flattening. Hearing thresholds partly explained it, but age still accounted for changes at some frequencies.
- SLPSurvey2016Tinnitus and hyperacusis therapy in a UK National Health Service audiology department: Patients' evaluations of the effectiveness of treatments.International journal of audiologyPatients with tinnitus or hyperacusis rated counselling highest, then education and CBT. Sound generators and hearing aids were rated less positively, and their contribution could not be separated from the counselling and education given with them.
- SLPOther2016Test-Retest Reliability of the Binaural Interaction Component of the Auditory Brainstem Response.Ear and hearingIn guinea pigs, raw binaural auditory brainstem amplitudes varied across sessions. Dividing the binaural amplitude by the monaural response strength let 20% curve changes be detected; raw amplitudes needed more than 50% reduction or a two-fold increase.
- SLPOther2016A Group-Administered social Skills Training for 8- to 12- Year-Old, high-Functioning Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Evaluation of its Effectiveness in a Naturalistic Outpatient Treatment Setting.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn high-functioning children with ASD, group social skills training increased parent and teacher ratings versus waiting list, and gains remained at 3 months. Loneliness did not decrease more than waiting list.
- PTOTPilot2016Quantifying selective elbow movements during an exergame in children with neurological disorders: a pilot study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn 33 children with neurological disorders, an airplane exergame measured isolated elbow movement. Scores matched therapists' judgments and trunk/strength measures, but did not worsen when the game became harder.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Effects of taekwondo intervention on cognitive function and academic self-efficacy in children.Journal of physical therapy scienceTaekwondo training improved Stroop Color-Word scores and self-confidence in children, but did not significantly change most other cognitive or self-efficacy measures. The study lacked an active exercise control, so benefits cannot be separated from general physical activity.
- SLPSurvey2017"Frank" presentations as a novel research construct and element of diagnostic decision-making in autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchMost ASD diagnosticians recognise a rapid, clear 'frank' presentation in about 40% of their patients. Clinicians form these impressions quickly, often within 10 minutes, primarily through observed social and repetitive behaviors. This suggests experience shapes diagnostic intuition, though it requires careful checking against formal criteria.
- PTOTOther2017Abnormal Joint Moment Distributions and Functional Performance During Sit-to-Stand in Femoroacetabular Impingement Patients.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationPeople with symptomatic hip impingement took 0.6 seconds longer to stand up, put less relative load on the knee, trended toward more hip effort, and loaded more slowly, without clear weight-bearing asymmetry.
- SLPOther2017Silence and Voicing Accumulations in Italian Primary School Teachers With and Without Voice Disorders.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationTeachers with organic voice disorders voiced more of their workday, especially in 0.17 to 3.15 second stretches, and had less silence in 3.16 to 10 second pauses. The study did not test whether changing these patterns improves voice.
- PTOther2017The effect of horse-riding simulator exercise on the gait, muscle strength and muscle activation in elderly people with knee osteoarthritis.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe group with the simulator did not do better than the knee-strengthening-only group, though both groups improved walking speed, knee strength and muscle activity.
- PTOther2017Estimated lower speed boundary at which the walk ratio constancy is broken in healthy adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceHealthy adults' walk ratio stayed constant until about 62 m/min. Below that, cadence, not step length, marked the shift. Very slow walking may use different control.
- SLPOther2017Finding the experts in the crowd: Validity and reliability of crowdsourced measures of children's gradient speech contrasts.Clinical linguistics & phoneticsCrowdsourced listeners rating children's 'r' sounds on a visual scale agreed with acoustic measurements. However, individual raters varied widely in quality. Screening raters for consistency across repeated trials improved the reliability of results, especially when using small groups.
- PTOTOther2017Discriminative and predictive validity of the short-form activities-specific balance confidence scale for predicting fall of stroke survivors.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe short-form ABC scale predicted falls in stroke survivors with high accuracy. A score of 45.42 or lower indicated a higher risk of multiple falls. This shorter tool performed better than the full 16-item scale and takes less time to administer.
- PTRCT2017The effect of bridge exercise method on the strength of rectus abdominis muscle and the muscle activity of paraspinal muscles while doing treadmill walking with high heels.Journal of physical therapy scienceBridge exercise increased abdominal strength in young women, and prone bridge exercise lowered muscle activity beside the lower back while walking in high heels. Not every spine region changed.
- PTOther2017The effects of tool holding on body schema during motor imagery: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.Journal of physical therapy scienceHolding a pen during mental writing imagery increased brain activity in motor areas for the dominant hand, but not the non-dominant hand. This suggests tool holding may help imagery only for movements already automated by the user.
- PTRCT2017Should high-power posing be integrated in physical therapy?Journal of physical therapy scienceHigh-power posing did not improve grip strength or pain threshold compared to low-power posing in healthy young adults. Neither group showed significant change from baseline, and the study found no benefit for the proposed physical therapy intervention.
- SLPRCT2017Motor-based treatment with and without ultrasound feedback for residual speech-sound errors.International journal of language & communication disordersMotor-based therapy with or without ultrasound feedback produced similar average gains in /ɹ/ accuracy for 12 children. While group results showed no advantage for either method, individual responses varied: some children benefited from the visual feedback, while others did not.
- PTOTMeta-Analysis2017Is there a difference in physical activity levels in patients before and up to one year after unilateral total hip replacement? A systematic review and meta-analysis.Clinical rehabilitationPooled physical activity did not significantly change after unilateral total hip replacement. The 6-minute walk was also unchanged overall, and one older-only study changed the result.
- SLPCohort2017Longitudinal development of communication in children with cerebral palsy between 24 and 53 months: Predicting speech outcomes.Developmental neurorehabilitationChildren with cerebral palsy who were not yet talking at age 2 were highly likely to remain unable to speak at age 4. For those who did begin speaking, earlier onset predicted faster gains in intelligibility and sentence length. Later starters showed persistent speech difficulties through preschool.
- PTOther2017Interrater reliability and intrarater reliability of lateral scapular slide tests of females in their 20s.Journal of physical therapy scienceTape-measured lateral scapular slide test measurements were repeatable by the same tester and between testers in 60 young female students, but the sample was narrow.
- OTSLPOther2016Brief Report: Prevalence of Self-injurious Behaviors among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder-A Population-Based Study.Journal of autism and developmental disorders27.7% of 8-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder in selected areas of the United States had documented self-injury, and prevalence varied widely by site. Ask about head banging, hair pulling, arm biting, eye poking, and skin scratching, especially with cognitive or adaptive delays.
- PTRCT2016Predictors of Exercise Adherence in Patients With Meniscal Tear and Osteoarthritis.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationIn 325 patients with knee OA and meniscal tear, 38% did not stick with exercise over 12 weeks. Lower income and no pain with pivoting or twisting were linked to more missed therapy and home exercise.
- Case-Control2016Emotional decision-making in autism spectrum disorder: the roles of interoception and alexithymia.Molecular autismAdults with autism made more consistent financial decisions than controls, resisting the bias to gamble when outcomes were framed as losses. This logical consistency was not linked to their ability to sense their heartbeat or their difficulty identifying emotions, suggesting a different decision-making strategy.
- PTOTRCT2016Enhanced Medical Rehabilitation: Effectiveness of a clinical training model.NeuroRehabilitationTraining four therapists in Enhanced Medical Rehabilitation improved or maintained use of 18 engagement techniques, and 13 of 18 items increased. Adherence was variable and below the 90% goal for many techniques. This tested therapist behavior, not patient recovery.
- SLPNarrative Review2016The Physiological Basis and Clinical Use of the Binaural Interaction Component of the Auditory Brainstem Response.Ear and hearingThe binaural interaction component may help identify binaural hearing problems behind difficulty understanding speech in noise, but it is not yet a ready-made clinical test.
- SLPOther2016Hearing thresholds, tinnitus, and headphone listening habits in nine-year-old children.International journal of audiologyMany children had hearing thresholds of 20 dB HL or more at one or more frequencies, especially at 6 and 8 kHz. Regular headphone use was associated with worse right-ear thresholds, and tinnitus was associated with poorer hearing in both ears.
- PTOther2016Pain, cognition and quality of life associate with structural measures of brain volume loss in multiple sclerosis.NeuroRehabilitationIn 29 people with relapsing-remitting MS and 29 matched controls, higher lesion volume was linked with more pain, lower quality of life, and poorer processing speed. Some brain structures related to symptoms, while others did not.
- OTPilot2016Matching Task Difficulty to Patient Ability During Task Practice Improves Upper Extremity Motor Skill After Stroke: A Proof-of-Concept Study.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationThe tasks practiced were about as hard as participants could manage. In 10 people with chronic stroke, 200 repetitions were feasible, and after the program they performed functional tasks faster and used less trunk movement.
