Interrater reliability and intrarater reliability of lateral scapular slide tests of females in their 20s.

Sang-Young Park

PMID 28533618

WHAT IT FOUND

Tape-measured lateral scapular slide test measurements were repeatable by the same tester and between testers in 60 young female students, but the sample was narrow.

Key findings

01The same tester's measurements were at least moderately consistent for the left side at the first and third positions, with values not lower than 0.7, and excellent elsewhere, with values not lower than 0.9.

02Between testers, measurements were excellent at all positions on both sides, with values not lower than 0.9.

What it does not show

Only 60 young female students were tested, so the results do not apply to men, older adults, athletes, or people with shoulder disease. The students had only mild neck pain and no diseases that could affect the study, so this was not a shoulder-disorder population. The study tested measurement consistency only, not whether the test predicts shoulder disorders.

The easy way to misread this

Do not read these reliability results as evidence that the test diagnoses shoulder disorders. The study only measured whether testers could repeat the tape measurements in young female students.
