- SLPCase-Control2016Assessment of impaired coordination between respiration and deglutition in children and young adults with ataxia telangiectasia.Developmental medicine and child neurologyChildren and young adults with ataxia telangiectasia showed less safe breathing-swallowing coordination than healthy peers, especially after swallowing. The method was research-only, and the study did not show these measures predicted symptoms.
- PTOTOther2016Measurement characteristics for two health-related quality of life measures in older adults: The SF-36 and the CDC Healthy Days items.Disability and health journalCDC Healthy Days items matched SF-36 physical and mental health scores in older adults, except physical functioning. A brief unhealthy-days question may miss function-specific problems.
- PTCohort2017The Diagnostic Accuracy of Special Tests for Rotator Cuff Tear: The ROW Cohort Study.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationJobe's test was positive in 88% of patients with rotator cuff tears. The drop arm test was positive in 24%, but a positive result made a tear likely. Negative results did not rule out a tear.
- PTOTSLPOther2017Effects of friction massage of the popliteal fossa on blood flow velocity of the popliteal vein.Journal of physical therapy scienceFriction massage to the back of the knee increased popliteal vein blood flow velocity in 15 young healthy men. This is a physiological finding in a small sample; it does not prove the massage treats edema, pain, or circulation disorders in patients.
- RCT2017Implementation of the Participatory Approach for Supervisors to Increase Self-Efficacy in Addressing Risk of Sick Leave of Employees: Results of a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.Journal of occupational rehabilitationThe supervisor support package did not increase supervisors' confidence in joint problem-solving compared with written information alone. It did increase discussions with employees about work problems or sick-leave risk, but sick-leave outcomes did not differ between groups.
- PTRCT2017Effect of maitland mobilization in cervical and thoracic spine and therapeutic exercise on functional impairment in individuals with chronic neck pain.Journal of physical therapy scienceCervical and thoracic joint mobilization added to therapeutic exercise reduced pain and neck disability more than exercise alone in a small trial. Balance and muscle tone improved similarly in both groups.
- Other2017Localization of the Lateral Retinacular Nerve for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Nerve Block for Lateral Knee Pain: A Cadaveric Study.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationIn cadavers, the lateral retinacular nerve branch point averaged 5.5 cm proximal to the lateral knee joint line and 2.6 cm proximal to the lateral femoral epicondyle. Dye hit the target in 4 of 4 knees at the joint line measurement.
- PTRCT2017The effects of exercise training using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on breathing in patients with chronic stroke patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceAdding transcranial direct current stimulation to breathing exercises improved lung capacity more than sham stimulation in chronic stroke patients. Both groups showed gains, but the tDCS group achieved significantly higher forced vital capacity and expiratory volume, suggesting the electrical stimulation enhances the effect of standard respiratory training.
- PTOther2017Maximal respiratory pressure in healthy Japanese children.Journal of physical therapy scienceHealthy Japanese children showed higher pressures when breathing in and out across age groups, and boys showed higher pressures than girls. Age, height, and weight were positively related to the pressures.
- PTSurvey2017The study of elbow injury in male adult kendo players.Journal of physical therapy scienceMale adult kendo players commonly reported posterior right elbow pain. Players aged 36 and older had restricted right elbow extension, and three with pain and limited motion had posterior osteophytes or free fragments on CT.
- SLPOther2017Stress and depression scales in aphasia: relation between the aphasia depression rating scale, stroke aphasia depression questionnaire-10, and the perceived stress scale.Topics in stroke rehabilitationIn 25 adults with aphasia, two caregiver-reported depression scales were strongly related to each other and to participants' self-reported stress. The scales may help flag depressive symptoms, but this small study did not test diagnosis or treatment.
- PTOTRCT2017Physical Activity Self-Management and Coaching Compared to Social Interaction in Huntington Disease: Results From the ENGAGE-HD Randomized, Controlled Pilot Feasibility Trial.Physical therapyHome coaching to set walking and exercise goals was feasible in Huntington disease, with 77% retained in the activity group and 92% in the social interaction group. Possible differences in activity and mobility need larger trials.
- PTRCT2017The effects of action observation training and mirror therapy on gait and balance in stroke patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceNo group clearly outperformed the others. Watching movement videos then practicing them, with twice-weekly physical therapy, showed improved standing balance scores and shorter walking task times. Mirror therapy with physical therapy showed shorter walking task times. Watching videos alone did not show these changes.
- PTOther2017Walking activity during daily living in children with myelomeningocele.Disability and rehabilitationIn daily life, children with mid-high lumbar myelomeningocele averaged 4867 steps/day, lower than sacral, low lumbar and typically developing groups at 9166 to 9657 steps/day. Sacral and low lumbar step totals were similar to controls.
- PTRCT2017Fatigue influences lower extremity angular velocities during a single-leg drop vertical jump.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter a short cycling fatigue task, young women landed a single-leg drop jump with faster bending at the hip and knee than controls. Joint positions did not change, and the study did not measure injuries or patients.
- SLPCase-Control2017Children with autism spectrum disorder have reduced otoacoustic emissions at the 1 kHz mid-frequency region.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchChildren with autism had weaker cochlear emissions at 1 kHz than typically developing peers, despite normal hearing tests. In children with autism, the difference was frequency-specific and associated with severity, not IQ.
- PTOTCohort2017Using diffusion tensor imaging to identify corticospinal tract projection patterns in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy.Developmental medicine and child neurologyDiffusion tensor imaging (DTI) identified the corticospinal tract in 81.8% of cases where TMS confirmed it, offering a practical alternative for children who cannot tolerate TMS. In children with bilateral connectivity, the tract from the damaged side showed poorer integrity than the healthy side.
- PTOther2017The effects of pelvic diagonal movements and resistance on the lumbar multifidus.Journal of physical therapy scienceSide-lying pelvic diagonal movements changed lumbar multifidus thickness, with anterior elevation greater than posterior depression. Adding resistance did not produce a further difference in thickness compared with no resistance.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Bayley-III motor scale and neurological examination at 2 years do not predict motor skills at 4.5 years.Developmental medicine and child neurologyBayley-III motor scores and neurological exams at 2 years did not predict motor difficulties at 4.5 years. Children with normal 2-year scores often developed significant motor problems later. Do not rely on these early assessments to rule out future motor issues in at-risk children.
- OTSLPCohort2017Non-ASD outcomes at 36 months in siblings at familial risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD): A baby siblings research consortium (BSRC) study.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchHigh-risk siblings who did not meet autism criteria at 36 months were more likely than controls to have mild-to-moderate global developmental delay and elevated autism symptom scores. Their language delay rates were not higher.
- Other2017Reliability of parent report measures of sleep in children with Down syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRParent sleep questionnaires did not agree on how many children with Down syndrome had sleep problems. The CSHQ total flagged 79.3%, the SDSC cut-off flagged 72.4%, and the BEDS total flagged none.
- PTOTSLPOther2017Estimated Prestroke Peak VO2 Is Related to Circulating IGF-1 Levels During Acute Stroke.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairIn 15 acute stroke patients, estimated pre-stroke aerobic fitness correlated with circulating IGF-1 levels but not with IGFBP-3. Patients with higher IGF-1 had significantly higher estimated fitness. This small observational study links a biomarker to a calculated fitness estimate, offering no evidence that changing fitness alters stroke recovery.
- OTSurvey2017Work and Mental Complaints: Are Response Outcome Expectancies More Important Than Work Conditions and Number of Subjective Health Complaints?Journal of occupational rehabilitationIn working adults, a high number of everyday health complaints was the strongest sign of anxiety and depression, not work strain or coping beliefs. Helplessness and hopelessness were linked to depression and combined anxiety and depression, but the links were small.
- SLPCase-Control2016Late Positive Potential ERP Responses to Social and Nonsocial Stimuli in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersYouth with autism showed blunted brain responses to smiling faces and enhanced responses to objects related to restricted interests compared to controls. However, subjective ratings of pleasure and arousal did not differ between groups, and brain responses did not predict symptom severity.
- PTOTOther2016Community and social participation among adults with mobility impairments: A mixed methods study.Disability and health journalFor adults with mobility impairments, pain, fatigue, and limited function were the clearest barriers to community and social life. In 462 survey participants, better health and function were strongly linked to more participation; neighborhood factors and personal confidence were not.
- PTOther2016Quantifying passive muscle stiffness in children with and without cerebral palsy using ultrasound shear wave elastography.Developmental medicine and child neurologyUltrasound calf muscle stiffness was higher in children with cerebral palsy than matched typically developing children. Relative to their own relaxed position, stretch response was similar. Stiffness did not track spasticity, function level, or botulinum toxin history.
- PTOTCohort2016Social Support and Actual Versus Expected Length of Stay in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationAlmost half of stroke, lower extremity fracture, and joint replacement inpatients left earlier than expected. Patients with no family or friend support were less likely to leave early in all groups, and more likely to stay longer in fracture or joint replacement.
- SLPCase Report2017Effects of electrical stimulation combined with dysphagia therapy in elderly individual with oropharyngeal dysphagia: a case study.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn a 72-year-old man with age-related swallowing difficulty, thermal-tactile stimulation, orofacial exercise, and electrical stimulation were followed by improved tongue and lip strength and decreased swallowing scale scores. The treatments were given together, so no single component can be credited.
- SLPOther2017Visual orienting in children with autism: Hyper-responsiveness to human eyes presented after a brief alerting audio-signal, but hyporesponsiveness to eyes presented without sound.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchChildren with autism looked more slowly at eyes when images appeared silently, but more quickly when a brief sound preceded them. Typical children showed the opposite pattern. This is a lab eye-tracking finding, not evidence that sound improves communication.
- PTOTCohort2017Negative Neurodynamic Tests Do Not Exclude Neural Dysfunction in Patients With Entrapment Neuropathies.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationA negative median nerve neurodynamic test does not rule out carpal tunnel syndrome. In this cohort, over half of confirmed CTS patients tested negative on these maneuvers, and those with negative tests showed worse warm sensation loss than those with positive tests.
- PTOTCohort2017Parkinsonian signs are a risk factor for falls.Gait & postureOlder adults with mild parkinsonian signs were more likely to fall during follow-up, even after common fall risk factors were considered. Their falls were also more likely to result in injury and emergency service use.
- SLPOther2017High autistic trait individuals do not modulate gaze behaviour in response to social presence but look away more when actively engaged in an interaction.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchTypical adults looked less at a video person they thought was live, but adults with high autistic traits did not change looking for this belief. During a live conversation, high autistic traits were linked to looking away more from the other person.
- PTOther2017Ventilatory threshold may be a more specific measure of aerobic capacity than peak oxygen consumption rate in persons with stroke.Topics in stroke rehabilitationThe breathing threshold measure was less tied to walking speed than peak oxygen use in 59 people with chronic stroke. This may mean it reflects aerobic capacity more specifically. Peak oxygen use can look artificially low when walking is impaired. The rating method was reliable.
- Cohort2017The Relationship Between Work-Disability Duration and Claimant's Expected Time to Return to Work as Recorded by Workers' Compensation Claims Managers.Journal of occupational rehabilitationClaimants who expected a longer time to return to work had longer compensated disability. Only 28% of estimates were within 7 days of when payments ended.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Impact of Cognition on Burn Inpatient Rehabilitation Outcomes.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationHigher cognitive scores at burn rehab admission were associated with greater total function gain and lower early acute transfer chance. Each extra cognitive point was linked to 0.7 more FIM points and a 24% lower chance of transfer within 3 days.

It was rated safe and easy, but remains a prototype.
- PTCohort2017A comparison of outcomes of asymmetry in infants with congenital muscular torticollis according to age upon starting treatment.Journal of physical therapy scienceInfants with congenital muscular torticollis who began ultrasound, massage, manual stretching and passive stretching before six weeks had a larger reduction in sternocleidomastoid thickness difference than those starting later. Head tilt and overall scores improved too. No single component can be credited.
- PTCohort2017Relationships Between Age at Menarche, Walking Gait Base of Support, and Stance Phase Frontal Plane Knee Biomechanics in Adolescent Girls.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationEarlier first period was linked to a wider walking stance and inward knee bending during walking in 46 healthy adolescent girls. This may help therapists spot higher knee-injury risk, but the study did not test injuries.
- PTCohort2017Implications of pain in functional activities in immediate postpartum period according to the mode of delivery and parity: an observational study.Brazilian journal of physical therapyPain at rest was mild and similar in both groups, but 42 cesarean women and 34 vaginal women reported pain-related activity limits.
- PTOther2017The effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on the pain and function of patients with degenerative knee arthritis.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 20 adults with degenerative knee arthritis, over four weeks, adding shock wave therapy to heat pack, interference current, and ultrasound produced greater reductions in pain and function scores than the same physical therapies alone.
- PTOTSLPSystematic Review2017The Canadian occupational performance measure for patients with stroke: a systematic review.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) shows good reliability in stroke patients but correlates poorly with standard assessments. It captures unique patient goals but requires adequate communication skills, so use it alongside other measures, not alone.
- PTOTQualitative2017Starting a new conversation: Engaging Veterans with spinal cord injury in discussions of what function means to them, the barriers/facilitators they encounter, and the adaptations they use to optimize function.Disability and health journalNine Veterans with spinal cord injury described function as doing what they want and being independent. They said tools, transportation, therapy and caregivers helped; wheelchairs and inaccessible surfaces hindered; they used creative adaptations.
- PTSystematic Review2017The development of an evidence-based clinical checklist for the diagnosis of anterior knee pain. The South African journal of physiotherapyA checklist for anterior knee pain combines pain with squatting, kneeling, stairs or sitting and tests to exclude other knee problems. Squatting reproduced pain in 91% of patients, but the paper did not report testing the checklist.
- PTOTSurvey2017Predictors of perceived barriers to physical activity in the general adult population: a cross-sectional study.Brazilian journal of physical therapyLack of motivation and time were the most common barriers to physical activity. People with partners reported fewer barriers, while those with lower education or income reported more. These associations describe who perceives barriers, not whether interventions work.
- PTOTSystematic Review2017A systematic review of high quality randomized controlled trials investigating motor skill programmes for children with developmental coordination disorder.Clinical rehabilitationFor children with developmental coordination disorder, individualized task-oriented training, including Neuromotor Task Training and motor imagery with practice, had the strongest support. Wii, core stability, table tennis, Tae Kwon Do and aquatic therapy did not.
- PTOther2017Levels of physical activity in people with chronic pain. The South African journal of physiotherapyPeople with chronic pain took fewer steps and walked shorter distances than matched controls, but both groups were mostly inactive.
- SLPOther2016Adapting the Bayley Scales of infant and toddler development in Ethiopia: evaluation of reliability and validity.Child: care, health and developmentIn rural Ethiopia, nurses and data collectors rated the adapted Bayley Scales with very high agreement. Scores rose with age and were lower in stunted children, but several language and motor items were not appropriate.
