- PTSystematic Review2016Measurement properties of the upright motor control test for adults with stroke: a systematic review.Archives of physiotherapyIn adults with stroke, knee extension and knee flexion scores on the Upright Motor Control Test may help tell community walkers from household walkers. No published data showed whether different clinicians score it the same or whether it tracks change.
- OTCase Series2016Bioelectrical impedance analysis for severe stroke patients with upper extremity hemiplegia.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn severe stroke patients with arm paralysis, the paralyzed side had lower lean mass, body water, body cell mass, and hand strength than the other side. Bioimpedance values differed in the same direction as occupational assessments. Small case series cannot prove a test works.

- PTOther2016The effectiveness of home-based exercise programs for low back pain patients.Journal of physical therapy sciencePatients who returned after four weeks showed improved pain, flexibility, endurance and disability scores during home exercise plus medical treatment. The study cannot separate the components, and adherence or exercise accuracy did not correlate with outcomes.
- PTOTSLPNarrative Review2016Measurement of physical activity in obese persons: how and why? A review.Journal of physical therapy scienceNo single method perfectly measures physical activity in obesity. Self-reports are cheap but often overestimated. Pedometers miss non-walking exercises. Accelerometers and heart rate monitors have specific blind spots. Combining sensors improves accuracy but adds cost and complexity.
- PTOther2016Changes in movements of neck, trunk, and hip according to height and foot position during sit-to-stand.Journal of physical therapy scienceFoot position did not change neck angles in healthy young adults rising from a fixed chair, but it changed trunk and hip movement angles; taller people showed larger trunk and hip movement.

- PTOther2016Ankle, knee, and hip joint contribution to body support during gait.Journal of physical therapy scienceDuring walking, the ankle, knee, and hip work together to support body weight. The main joint responsible for this support shifts depending on the stance phase. This trade-off pattern helps identify which specific muscles need strengthening to improve gait.
- PTOther2016Immediate effects of forearm elastic and nonelastic taping on wrist flexor muscle and grip strength of normal adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceElastic forearm tape produced larger immediate grip and wrist flexor strength gains than nonelastic tape in healthy adults. It did not test injured people, pain, or daily hand tasks, so this is not evidence of a treatment benefit.
- PTOther2016Effects of active rehabilitation therapy on muscular back strength and subjective pain degree in chronic lower back pain patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceAn eight-week active core rehabilitation program that included education, stretching and strengthening increased average back strength and reduced average pain scores in the 8 experimental patients, while the 8 control patients' average pain scores did not change.

Regular exercise was linked to lower stress and fatigue. Smoking correlated with higher psychosocial stress and fatigue but not occupational stress. Job demands and insecurity were the primary occupational stressors.
- PTOther2016The association between the body composition and lifestyle affecting pulmonary function in Japanese workers.Journal of physical therapy scienceMore visceral fat was linked to lower lung function in 97 healthy Japanese male workers. More fat-free mass was linked to better airflow, but lifestyle measures did not remain associated after age and height were considered.
- PTSLPOther2016The correlation of respiratory muscle strength and cough capacity in stroke patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn stroke patients receiving general physical therapy, including neurological treatment, cough peak flow gains after inspiratory and expiratory muscle training tracked most closely with expiratory strength gains. Both cough peak flow and respiratory muscle strength increased.
- OTOther2016Sensitivity and specificity of the safe driving behavior measure and the driving habits questionnaire for older self-drivers.Journal of physical therapy scienceDriving questionnaires did not accurately identify collision history in 45 community-dwelling adults aged 65 to 74. Neither the Safe Driving Behavior Measure nor the Driving Habits Questionnaire predicted reported collision history.
- PTOTSurvey2016Evaluation of sensory processing abilities following stroke using the adolescent/adult sensory profile: implications for individualized intervention.Journal of physical therapy scienceStroke survivors mostly resembled healthy adults on sensory processing. They differed in low registration, sensation seeking, and sensation avoiding, not in sensory sensitivity. The profile describes patterns, not treatment effects.

This points to sling exercise as a possible option for chronic low back pain.
- PTOTOther2016The effect of performing a dual-task on postural control and selective attention of older adults when stepping backward.Journal of physical therapy scienceOlder adults had slower reactions, more errors, and greater sway when stepping backward. Adding a tone task made reaction times slower in both groups, but sway did not differ between single and dual task.
- PTOther2016Relation between muscle fiber conduction velocity and exerted dynamic characteristics of muscular tension in patients with hemiplegia caused by stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe affected leg in 13 people after stroke had slower electrical conduction in muscle fibers and weaker, slower ankle dorsiflexion force. On the affected side, slower conduction tracked with weaker, slower force, but the unaffected side showed no such link.
- PTRCT2016The effect of exercise types for rotator cuff repair patients on activities of shoulder muscles and upper limb disability.Journal of physical therapy scienceBoth open-chain and closed-chain shoulder exercises after rotator cuff repair improved muscle activity and reduced arm disability over three weeks. The groups changed muscle fatigue measures differently, but disability scores did not differ.
