PT OT Cohort 2021 Correlates of Objectively Measured Physical Activity Among People With Multiple Sclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with progressive MS spent less time in light activity than those with relapsing-remitting MS. Walking impairment predicted less vigorous activity, but only for those with lower disability scores. For those with higher disability scores, walking ability did not predict activity levels. PT OT Cohort 2022 Evaluation of unsupervised 30-second chair stand test performance assessed by wearable sensors to predict fall status in multiple sclerosis. Gait & posture Wearable sensors tracking chair stands at home over 48 hours detected fall risk in multiple sclerosis better than a single clinic test. Non-fallers performed more repetitions at home than in the lab, while fallers' performance stayed consistent. PT OT Cohort 2021 Early Use of Phenol Neurolysis Likely Reduces the Total Amount of Botulinum Toxin in Management of Post-Stroke Spasticity. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stroke patients who received phenol neurolysis first required significantly less botulinum toxin in their subsequent injections compared to those who received botulinum toxin first. Phenol was typically used for lower limb spasticity within four months of stroke onset. PT OT Systematic Review 2021 Effectiveness of Self-Monitoring Approach Using Fitness Trackers to Improve Walking Ability in Rehabilitation Settings: A Systematic Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Adding fitness trackers to usual rehabilitation showed little to no improvement in walking ability across most conditions. Stable COPD patients saw a small increase in walking distance that was still below the threshold for clinical importance. Trackers alone are not a fix for gait deficits. PT OT Systematic Review 2021 What Is Intensity and How Can It Benefit Exercise Intervention in People With Stroke? A Rapid Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences High-intensity exercise appears safe for people with stroke, with no adverse events reported in the studies reviewed. However, there is no agreed definition of intensity, and most studies measured body changes rather than how much people could actually do in daily life. PT OT Other 2021 Relating Global Cognition With Upper-Extremity Motor Skill Retention in Individuals With Mild-to-Moderate Parkinson's Disease. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Higher scores on a five-minute cognitive screen predicted better retention of an upper-extremity motor task nine days later in people with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease. This held true regardless of whether they took their dopamine medication during training. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Relationship Between Cognition and Gait at 2- and 12-Months Post-Traumatic Brain Injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Slower performance on a cognitive sorting test at 2 months predicted slower maximum walking speed and less stable step timing at 12 months. However, the statistical models explained very little of the variation, so early cognitive scores cannot reliably predict an individual patient's long-term walking recovery. PT OT Other 2022 The presence of pain in community-dwelling South African manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury. The South African journal of physiotherapy 85% of manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury reported pain. Neuropathic pain was more common than musculoskeletal pain and was associated with higher severity. Burning pain in the lower limbs below the injury level was the most frequent presentation. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2021 When Spinal Neuromodulation Meets Sensorimotor Rehabilitation: Lessons Learned From Animal Models to Regain Manual Dexterity After a Spinal Cord Injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences This review synthesizes animal and early human data showing cervical spinal stimulation may aid hand recovery, but only when paired with specific rehabilitation. Stimulation alone is not a cure; optimal training intensity and timing remain undefined. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Immediate effects of neuromuscular joint-facilitation bridging exercises on walking ability and balance function in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Combining neuromuscular joint facilitation with bridging exercises produced immediate improvements in walking speed and balance in stroke patients. The combined approach outperformed either intervention alone, though the study measured effects right after a single session rather than long-term recovery. PT OT Other 2021 Flipping the ICF: Exploring the Interplay of Theory and the Lived Experience to Reconsider Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling People With Multiple Sclerosis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with MS prioritized daily routines like self-care and family roles to maintain identity and independence. Physiotherapists focused on physical performance and overlooked these personal and contextual drivers. This mismatch explains why standard exercise advice often fails to sustain engagement. OT SLP Pilot 2021 Metacognitive Strategy Training Is Feasible for People With Aphasia. OTJR : occupation, participation and health Adapted strategy training using supported conversation was feasible for stroke survivors with aphasia. Therapists maintained fidelity, participants engaged well, and disability scores improved similarly to patients without aphasia, though only half mastered the strategy. OT Case Series 2022 Using Subthreshold Vibratory Stimulation During Poststroke Rehabilitation Therapy: A Case Series. OTJR : occupation, participation and health Four stroke survivors used a wearable wristband delivering imperceptible vibration during six weeks of therapy. They showed continuous improvement in arm function and daily use without safety issues. This small series cannot prove the device works, but suggests it is feasible for longer trials. PT OT RCT 2022 Embodiment, tailoring, and trust are important for co-construction of meaning in physiotherapy after stroke: A qualitative study. Physiotherapy research international : the journal for researchers and clinicians in physical therapy Stroke survivors valued trust and engagement over specific exercises. They wanted to be pushed and corrected, interpreting exertion as progress. Assessment and goal-setting were often tacit, with patients trusting therapists to decide what mattered, rather than seeking explicit explanations. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Can Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Facilitate Post-stroke Cognitive Rehabilitation? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences tDCS may briefly improve attention and language recovery in stroke survivors, but does not help global thinking, memory, or visual neglect. The evidence is weak, based on small studies with no long-term follow-up, so it should not replace standard therapy. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 Sensory-Based Priming for Upper Extremity Hemiparesis After Stroke: A Scoping Review. OTJR : occupation, participation and health Most studies found that adding sensory priming to motor training improved arm function in stroke patients. However, protocols varied wildly in dose and method, and many were small pilots, so there is no single proven recipe to copy yet. OT Qualitative 2021 Providing Verbal Assistance When Assessing Individuals Living with a Traumatic Brain Injury. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie Expert OTs described verbal assistance during dynamic TBI assessments as flexible, not a fixed sequence. They first encourage doing more alone, then adjust cues based on safety, progress, requests, and context. PT OT SLP Protocol 2021 A Co-creation Centre for Accessible Rehabilitation Technology. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences This paper describes the setup of a new technology-driven rehabilitation centre for stroke survivors and outlines the plan for a small pilot study. It reports no results, so there is currently no evidence here to change clinical practice. PT OT Systematic Review 2021 Vision Evaluation Tools for Adults With Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie No single tool captures all visual deficits after acquired brain injury. Occupational therapists mostly use tests for higher-level vision, risking missed basic problems like eye movement. Use multiple tools together and screen foundation skills first to avoid misidentifying deficits. PT OT Qualitative 2022 The COVID-19 Pandemic Related Lived Experiences of Individuals With a Spinal Cord Injury/Disease. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with spinal cord injury said pandemic rules made mobility, home care, social interaction and health care harder, while telehealth, physical activity and social connection helped them cope. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Co-occurring conditions and racial-ethnic disparities: Medicaid enrolled adults on the autism spectrum. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Medicaid-enrolled autistic adults had higher rates of most mental health conditions and several physical ones, but lower rates of others like stroke and cerebral palsy. Significant racial-ethnic disparities existed in both physical and mental health diagnoses compared to white autistic adults. OT Survey 2021 Factors Associated with Quality of Life among Caregivers of People with Spinal Cord Injury. Occupational therapy international Caregivers of people with spinal cord injury reported lower quality of life when depression and caregiving burden were higher. Injury level also mattered. This helps occupational therapists target caregiver training and support, but it cannot show training improves outcomes. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Participatory co-creation of an adapted physical activity program for adults with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Adults with moderate-to-severe TBI valued a 9-month community gym program for its structure, peer support, and clear visual aids. They reported feeling more capable and autonomous, with barriers like fatigue and social comparison easing over time. PT OT Narrative Review 2022 Predicting Individual Treatment Response to rTMS for Motor Recovery After Stroke: A Review and the CanStim Perspective. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Potential predictors of better rTMS response after stroke include purely subcortical lesions, preserved motor pathways, and the BDNF Val/Val genotype, but evidence is inconsistent and many studies were small or uncontrolled. OT Qualitative 2022 An exploration of the role of occupational therapists in addressing sexuality with service users post stroke. The British journal of occupational therapy Three occupational therapists in Wales said they rarely discuss sexuality with stroke survivors due to embarrassment, lack of training, and ageist assumptions. They viewed it as a shared multidisciplinary responsibility rather than their sole role, despite recognising it as a meaningful occupation. PT OT Cohort 2022 Relationship among trunk control, activities of daily living, and upper extremity function during the first week after stroke in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Journal of physical therapy science Trunk control strongly correlated with daily living ability and arm function within 7 days of stroke. Trunk control and age predicted daily living ability, with trunk control being the stronger factor. Early trunk assessment is critical for planning acute stroke rehabilitation. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 Adaptations in Muscular Strength for Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis Following Robotic Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Robot-assisted lower-limb training increased leg strength in all three lower-limb studies; one of two upper-limb studies increased grip force. Strength was not the main target in these five small studies, so it is not proven as a stand-alone strength treatment. PT OT RCT 2021 The Effect of Whole-Body Vibration on Proprioception and Motor Function for Individuals with Moderate Parkinson Disease: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial. Occupational therapy international Whole-body vibration did not improve proprioception or outperform conventional therapy in moderate Parkinson's disease. Both groups showed short-term gains in motor function and balance, suggesting vibration is a viable passive alternative for those unable to engage in active movement. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Factors related to sustainable employment of people with acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury: The employer's perspective. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Employers said keeping staff with brain or spinal injury depends on matching tasks to ability and open communication. They valued job coaches to bridge gaps, especially when invisible cognitive issues or self-awareness problems arise. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Designing a trial of early electrical stimulation to the stroke-affected arm: Qualitative findings on the barriers and facilitators. The British journal of occupational therapy Therapists perceived time and lack of confidence as major barriers to early electrical stimulation, but patients confidently self-managed the treatment and found it acceptable. Patients reported insufficient staff support due to ward pressures. This highlights a disconnect between clinician concerns and patient experience. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Managing communication changes in persons with multiple sclerosis: Findings from qualitative focus groups. International journal of language & communication disorders People with MS wanted routine communication assessment, practical information, affordable services, support groups, and clinicians who ask about communication and refer to speech pathology, psychology, OT and neuropsychology. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2022 Somesthetic, Visual, and Auditory Feedback and Their Interactions Applied to Upper Limb Neurorehabilitation Technology: A Narrative Review to Facilitate Contextualization of Knowledge. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Augmented sensory feedback can support upper limb stroke recovery, but more is not always better. Match feedback type to the patient's specific deficits and task complexity, and fade it over time to avoid dependency and maintain challenge. OT Protocol 2022 Managing Fatigue in Parkinson's Disease: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie This paper is a protocol for a planned pilot trial. It describes how researchers will test a six-week videoconference fatigue management program for people with Parkinson's disease. No patients have been enrolled or assessed yet, so there are no results to report. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Metacognitive Treatment in Acquired Brain Injury and Its Applicability to Aphasia: A Systematic Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Metacognitive therapy helped most people with acquired brain injury on at least one measure, but results varied widely. For those with aphasia, evidence is too thin to recommend it as a standalone treatment. Try breaking goals into steps and giving feedback, but do not expect consistent language gains. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Conceptualization of Participation: A Qualitative Synthesis of Brain Injury Stakeholder Perspectives. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with brain injury define participation by choice, contribution, and feeling included, not just by completing tasks. Social relationships and leisure were cited far more often than work. These subjective elements often do not fit standard impairment-focused outcome measures. PT OT SLP Case Report 2022 Ankle dorsiflexion training with a newly developed Hybrid Assistive Limb for a patient with foot drop caused by common peroneal nerve palsy: a case report. Journal of physical therapy science One man with foot drop from nerve damage showed stronger ankle movement and a normal gait after seven sessions with an ankle exoskeleton. However, he also received standard rehab, so the device's specific benefit cannot be separated from natural recovery or other therapy. PT OT Case Report 2022 Brain-Computer Interface Priming for Cervical Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy: An Exploratory Case Study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences In one person with chronic cervical spinal cord injury, adding brain-computer interface priming before spinal cord stimulation did not clearly improve hand function more than stimulation alone. Gains occurred in both phases, but independence in daily activities did not change. OT Other 2022 Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Reliability of the Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool (HOME FAST) in Assessing Fall-Risk Home Hazards for Stroke Using Technologies over a Conventional Home Visit. Occupational therapy international Malay, Mandarin and Tamil HOME FAST versions let therapists rate stroke home hazards from videos and photos. In 10 analysed homes, ratings agreed with an in-person visit, so they can screen fall risks when a visit is not possible. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Self-Management Embedded in Daily Activities: A Photoelicitation Focus Group Study among Persons with Spinal Cord Injury and Their Primary Caregivers in Bangladesh. Occupational therapy international People with spinal cord injury and caregivers in Bangladesh described managing daily life through routines, activity, emotional coping, roles, and tackling stigma. They moved to friendlier places, asserted rights, advocated access, and used income, faith, charity, and peers. PT OT SLP Other 2022 The Effects of Occupation-Based Community Rehabilitation for Improving Activities of Daily Living and Health-Related Quality of Life of People with Disabilities after Stroke Living at Home: A Single Subject Design. Occupational therapy international Three people with severe disabilities after stroke living at home improved daily life independence and quality of life after a community-based occupational therapy programme. The programme combined task training, home changes, education and resource linking, so the effect of any single part cannot be separated. PT OT Other 2022 Optimization of machine learning method combined with brain-computer interface rehabilitation system. Journal of physical therapy science In 8 stroke patients, 4 weeks of brain-computer interface training with a robot improved upper limb scores and reduced spasticity. Brain imaging suggested neural reshaping, but the tiny sample and lack of a control group mean this is a technical proof of concept, not evidence of efficacy. PT OT SLP RCT 2022 Effects of exercise on sleep spindles in Parkinson's disease. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Exercise did not change sleep spindle density or amplitude across the whole night in people with Parkinson's disease. It did slow a decline in spindle density during the first half of the night, and this change correlated with better memory scores in the exercise group only. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 Influences on Participation in Life After Spinal Cord Injury: Qualitative Inquiry Reveals Interaction of Context and Moderators. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with spinal cord injury described participation as shaped by physical and social barriers, body functions, psychological meaning, control, knowledge, support, resources and timing. These themes can guide person-centred rehabilitation, but the review does not test interventions. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Risk factors for decline in gait speed during walking while talking in older adults. Gait & posture Walking speed while talking declined faster in older adults who were older, had poorer balance, or had faster single-task walking speeds. Poor balance was the strongest modifiable risk factor for this accelerated decline. PT OT Pilot 2022 Utility of an obstacle-crossing test to classify future fallers and non-fallers at hospital discharge after stroke: A pilot study. Gait & posture Stroke survivors who failed to step over a customized obstacle before hospital discharge were three times more likely to fall in the next three months. This simple test may help identify those needing extra fall prevention, though results are not precise enough for routine practice yet. PT OT Cohort 2022 Impact of Falls and Fear of Falling on Participation, Autonomy and Life Satisfaction in the First Year After Spinal Cord Injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences After discharge, falling alone was not linked to participation or life satisfaction. Fear of falling was linked to lower indoor, outdoor and family autonomy; falling with fear was linked to poorer social life and lower life satisfaction. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of neonates born at term with perinatal haemorrhagic stroke: A population-based study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Most infants with perinatal haemorrhagic stroke had lasting neurodevelopmental issues. Parietal lobe involvement strongly predicted cerebral palsy and cognitive deficits. Frontal lobe strokes showed no motor or basic cognitive impairment, suggesting better outcomes for that group. OT Qualitative 2022 Occupational Therapy-Based Energy Management Education in People with Post-COVID-19 Condition-Related Fatigue: Results from a Focus Group Discussion. Occupational therapy international Nine OTs said energy management education was relevant for post-COVID fatigue, but they reported patients often struggled to see new physical and cognitive limits. They suggested adapting materials and starting with one-to-one contact before group use. PT OT RCT 2022 Effectiveness of Repetitive Facilitative Exercise Combined with Electrical Stimulation Therapy to Improve Very Severe Paretic Upper Limbs in with Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Occupational therapy international Patients with very severe arm paralysis who combined repetitive exercise with electrical stimulation showed greater gains in hand and finger function than those receiving conventional therapy alone. No other treatment group improved significantly more than the control, and proximal shoulder function did not differ between groups. OT SLP Other 2022 The Impact of Preinjury and Secondary Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on Outcomes After Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Adolescents with traumatic brain injury and either pre-existing or new-onset ADHD showed similar deficits in executive function, social competence, and behavior. However, parents of teens with new-onset ADHD reported significantly higher depression and distress, particularly when the injury was more than four months prior. ← Previous PAGE 25 OF 56 Next →
