PT OT Cohort 2022 A Prediction Model for Various Treatment Pathways of Upper Extremity in Tetraplegia. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Motor point mapping and ASIA scores taken 4 to 8 weeks after cervical spinal cord injury predict hand muscle strength at 6 months. Intact lower motor neurons and AIS C or D scores strongly indicate that patients will develop useful voluntary movement. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Operant down-conditioning of the soleus H-reflex in people after stroke. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Half of stroke survivors successfully reduced a spinal reflex through training. Those who succeeded walked faster by 0.14 m/s on average. The other half did not improve reflex size, but their walking speed did not worsen either. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 The Interrelationship of Tinnitus and Hearing Loss Secondary to Age, Noise Exposure, and Traumatic Brain Injury. Ear and hearing Hearing loss is the strongest risk factor for tinnitus, increasing risk 4.15 times. Tinnitus often precedes measurable hearing loss, suggesting it may be an early warning sign. Veterans over 40 with tinnitus have an 80% likelihood of developing hearing difficulties. PT OT Case Series 2022 Feasibility and Acceptability of Game-Based Cortical Priming and Functional Lower Limb Training in a Remotely Supervised Home Setting for Chronic Stroke: A Case Series. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Three chronic stroke survivors completed 24 home sessions of game-based ankle priming and lower limb training remotely. All showed walking speed gains meeting the minimal clinically important difference. The program was feasible and safe, but without a control group, efficacy remains unproven. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Facilitators and Barriers to Sustainable Employment After Spinal Cord Injury or Acquired Brain Injury: The Person's Perspective. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with spinal cord or acquired brain injury described sustainable work as depending on accessible, flexible workplaces, supportive colleagues, and confidence to explain their needs. Insurance delays and invisible fatigue were major barriers. PT OT Survey 2022 Exploring problems for school reintegration following spinal cord injury: Perspectives on the kindergarten through fifth-grade population. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Children with spinal cord injury often return to school needing new support plans. Physical therapy was the most common need, followed by occupational therapy and counseling. Access barriers remain frequent, and many parents did not know their child's injury level. PT OT Case Report 2022 Improvement in lower extremity hemiplegia in a post-operative brain tumor patient by applying an integrated volitional control electrical stimulator. Journal of physical therapy science A man with post-surgical leg paralysis walked faster after IVES gait training, improving from 10.9 to 9.43 seconds over 10 meters. Balance and muscle control also changed, but this single case cannot prove the device works for others. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Empowerment, Communication, and Navigating Care: The Experience of Persons With Spinal Cord Injury From Acute Hospitalization to Inpatient Rehabilitation. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Patients with spinal cord injury reported needing to advocate aggressively for their own care and education. They found hospital staff often lacked empathy or specialized knowledge, leaving them unprepared for discharge and forcing them to rely on family and peers to navigate community resources. PT OT Other 2022 Effect of Haptic Training During Manual Wheelchair Propulsion on Shoulder Joint Reaction Moments. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Haptic training raised pushrim force effectiveness but also increased shoulder joint loads. The absolute rise was small, under 10% of maximum effort. Short-term use appears safe, but long-term injury risk remains unknown. PT OT Case Series 2022 Brachial plexus birth injury and cerebral palsy lead to a common contracture phenotype characterized by reduced functional muscle length and strength. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences In ten children with cerebral palsy or brachial plexus injury, affected elbows showed weak muscles that were also functionally short. This suggests contractures stem from impaired muscle growth rather than excess strength, pointing toward lengthening treatments. PT OT Qualitative 2022 A focus group study of therapists' views on using a novel neuroanimation virtual reality game to deliver intensive upper-limb rehabilitation early after stroke. Archives of physiotherapy Therapists found virtual reality games engaging but felt their own active presence was essential for success. They warned that without dedicated time, training, and technical support, such intensive therapy is difficult to sustain in routine practice. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 A Scoping Review on Shoulder Injuries of Wheelchair Tennis Players: Potential Risk-Factors and Musculoskeletal Adaptations. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Wheelchair tennis players face shoulder risks from overhead motion and muscle imbalances, but evidence is scarce. Most studies included few participants and used different outcome measures, so specific risk factors remain proposed rather than proven. PT OT Cohort 2022 Clinical and socio-demographic determinants of community reintegration in people with spinal cord injury in eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal province. The South African journal of physiotherapy Community reintegration was lower in women and those with muscle spasms. Employment and salary were linked to higher scores, but injury severity and other complications like pressure sores or infections showed no significant association with reintegration levels. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Moving goals. Goal-work in Parkinson's disease rehabilitation. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Goal-setting in Parkinson's rehabilitation is a fluid, shared process that continues at home and in clinics. Spouses often co-work on goals, but patients frequently miss that reviews happen because they are un-scheduled and individual. Teams need to make goal-tracking visible to avoid confusion. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 An evaluation of the structure and process of stroke rehabilitation in primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals in Ghana. The South African journal of physiotherapy In Ghana, stroke care varies sharply by hospital level. Tertiary hospitals offer five sessions weekly with full teams and imaging, while primary and secondary sites provide only two weekly sessions, lack specialists like speech therapists, and have no on-site scans. Protocols are often inaccessible to staff. PT OT Pilot 2022 A Remotely Delivered Progressive Walking Intervention for Adults With Persistent Symptoms of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Feasibility and Exploration of Its Impact. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences For adults with persistent concussion symptoms, a remote progressive walking programme with coaching, monitoring and education was feasible, safe and well accepted. Participants walked more and reported fewer symptoms, less fear of movement, less fatigue and better quality of life. PT OT Other 2022 Enhancing touch sensibility by sensory retraining in a sensory discrimination task via haptic rendering. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Healthy adults improved their ability to distinguish virtual textures after training with a robotic device. The robot guiding the hand was more consistent than letting people explore freely. People felt more competent when the robot guided them. This is a test in healthy adults, not patients. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Development and Validation of the Short-LIMOS for the Acute Stroke Unit-A Short Version of the Lucerne ICF-Based Multidisciplinary Observation Scale. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A 10-item stroke-unit observation scale rated motor, cognitive and communication daily tasks consistently, closely matched the original 45-item LIMOS, and tracked the Barthel Index moderately. PT OT Other 2022 Biomechanical assessment of the ipsilesional upper limb in post-stroke patients during multi-joint reaching tasks: A quantitative study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stroke patients show measurable movement deficits in their 'unaffected' arm. These deficits are worse in patients with severe weakness on the other side and do not fully resolve by the subacute stage. Clinicians should assess and treat the non-paralyzed arm. PT OT RCT 2022 Effect of a tailored upper extremity strength training intervention combined with direct current stimulation in chronic stroke survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Tailoring strength training intensity to individual brain excitability markers improved arm function and grip in chronic stroke survivors. Adding anodal tDCS provided no further benefit. The training gains occurred regardless of whether participants received real or sham stimulation. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Hope for "Continued Vitality": Qualitative Study of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury and Low Mood on Their Rehabilitation. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Adults with concussion and low mood described feeling invalidated when providers doubted their invisible symptoms, worsening their distress. They wanted providers to believe them, set realistic recovery expectations, and coordinate care so they did not have to self-advocate. PT OT Other 2022 Effect of Fatiguing Wheelchair Propulsion and Weight Relief Lifts on Subacromial Space in Wheelchair Users. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Wheelchair users with spinal cord injury had a narrowed subacromial space during weight relief lifts, especially those with low anaerobic capacity. However, fatiguing wheelchair propulsion did not change the space or tendon compression ratios, suggesting daily propulsion alone does not cause immediate narrowing. PT OT Qualitative 2022 How do people with physical/mobility disabilities benefit from a telehealth exercise program? A qualitative analysis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Participants with disabilities described the telehealth exercise program as helping them feel stronger, more mobile, and happier. They valued the routine and accountability but requested more options to adjust exercise speed and difficulty to match their changing abilities. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Body Mass Index and Exercise Effort Influences Changes in Motor Symptoms After High-Cadence Dynamic Cycling in Parkinson's Disease. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences High-cadence cycling improved Parkinson's motor symptoms in this pooled analysis, but baseline severity predicted the outcome. Effort alone did not explain the variance; instead, higher BMI weakened the link between effort and symptom improvement. PT OT Other 2022 Lower Kinetic Chain, Meet the Thinking Brain: A Scoping Review of Cognitive Function and Lower Extremity Injury Risk. International journal of sports physical therapy Adding cognitive demands to physical tasks consistently worsened lower-limb mechanics, such as reducing knee flexion and increasing valgus. Athletes with a history of concussion showed higher rates of subsequent lower-limb injury, even after symptoms resolved. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Health care professionals' experiences with goal setting during initial rehabilitation after newly acquired spinal cord injury/ disorder - a qualitative focus group study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Health care professionals described goal setting after spinal cord injury as shaped by insurance limits, team meetings, and patient emotions. Interprofessional goal rounds helped include patients, while small achievable steps eased tension from unrealistic hopes and uncertainty. OT RCT 2022 Effects of Combining Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Bilateral Upper Limb Training in Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Occupational therapy international Adding cognitive behavioral therapy to bilateral upper limb training reduced depression, anxiety, and negative thoughts in stroke patients. It did not improve upper limb function more than conventional therapy, but it did increase patient satisfaction with their performance. PT OT Case Report 2022 Case Report: Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation in the Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Patient. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences One patient with chronic tetraplegia improved in sitting balance and self-care after ten sessions combining noise galvanic vestibular stimulation, vestibular exercises, and neurofunctional physical therapy. Because several treatments were given together, the contribution of the electrical stimulation alone cannot be separated. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Changes in social participation between 1 and 2 years following moderate-severe traumatic brain injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Most people with moderate-to-severe brain injury showed stable social participation between 1 and 2 years post-injury. Decline was linked to worsening functional status, while improvement was associated with having private insurance and lower baseline social participation. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Key demographics and psychological skills associated with adjustment to progressive Multiple Sclerosis early in the diagnosis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with secondary progressive MS reported worse adjustment than those with primary progressive MS. Self-efficacy, avoidance coping, and psychological vulnerability were the strongest factors linked to how well patients adapted. These findings suggest targeting these specific areas in early rehabilitation support. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Predictors of cognitive gains during inpatient rehabilitation for older adults with traumatic brain injury. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Older adults with TBI made clinically meaningful cognitive gains in inpatient rehab. Younger age, female sex, higher motor function, longer stays, and freestanding facilities predicted better recovery. Black and Hispanic patients had lower odds of favorable outcomes. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 The use of wearable sensors to assess and treat the upper extremity after stroke: a scoping review. Disability and rehabilitation Wearable sensors can track upper extremity motion after stroke, but the review found no evidence that they improve recovery. They map arm use, impairment, and training cues; clinical benefit still needs testing. PT OT Cohort 2022 The association between sleep deficits and sedentary behavior in people with mild Parkinson disease. Disability and rehabilitation People with mild Parkinson disease slept less and were more sedentary than healthy adults. More sleep linked to less sitting time in both groups. But sleep did not predict step count or active minutes. Treat sitting and moving as separate issues when addressing sleep. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Exploring Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening in Adults With Persistent Complaints After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Adults with persistent mild TBI symptoms showed worse vestibular screening scores and poorer balance/gait than controls. However, these screening scores correlated strongly with self-reported dizziness but weakly with actual physical performance, suggesting they measure different things. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Experiences of receiving a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies. Disability and rehabilitation People with MS described diagnosis as a period of shock, fear, and anger, often worsened by impersonal communication and unbelieved symptoms. They needed clear, timely information and ongoing emotional support from clinicians, but many felt these needs were unmet. PT OT Cohort 2023 The minimal clinically important difference of the motricity index score. Topics in stroke rehabilitation In 69 patients assessed early after stroke, a 13-point rise on the 0-99 Motricity Index arm score was the cutoff for meaningful recovery compared with another upper-limb test. PT OT Other 2022 Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Timing in Fatigued and Nonfatigued Adults With Multiple Sclerosis. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Adults with MS and fatigue took fewer steps and spent less time in moderate-to-vigorous activity than non-fatigued adults. Both groups were most active in the morning and midday, and most sedentary in the evening. Fatigued adults maintained activity longer into the day. PT OT Cohort 2022 The demographic and disability characteristics of individuals who regularly attend an urban adaptive fitness center: An observational study. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation People with significant disabilities who attend an adaptive fitness center are more disabled than 86% of the general population. Despite this, 96.8% exercise there at least twice a week, showing that high disability levels do not stop regular participation. PT OT RCT 2022 Music Upper Limb Therapy-Integrated Provides a Feasible Enriched Environment and Reduces Post-stroke Depression: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Group music therapy reduced depression and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor compared to home exercises. However, home exercises improved actual motor function and sensation, while music therapy only improved self-perceived recovery. Neither was superior on the primary motor outcome. OT RCT 2022 Evaluating occupational performance coaching to support fatigue management for people with multiple sclerosis: A feasibility study. Clinical rehabilitation Adding occupational therapy coaching to a fatigue website helped people with severe multiple sclerosis fatigue set goals and use the site more. While participants felt more confident and less impacted by fatigue, these improvements were not significant enough to prove the coaching works. PT OT Cohort 2022 African Americans and Women Have Lower Functional Gains During Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation After Hemorrhagic Stroke. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Female and African American patients with hemorrhagic stroke made smaller functional gains during acute inpatient rehabilitation than male and white patients. These differences persisted even after accounting for stroke severity, age, and location, pointing to unmeasured factors rather than clinical presentation. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Intra- and interpersonal effects of coping style and self-efficacy on anxiety, depression and life satisfaction in patient-partner couples after stroke. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Proactive coping and self-efficacy in stroke patients and their partners predicted lower anxiety and depression in both individuals over the first year. Intrapersonal effects were stronger, but a patient's coping style also reduced their partner's anxiety, supporting early screening of the couple rather than just the patient. OT Other 2023 Person-centered goal setting is feasible in people with Parkinson's disease who have subjective cognitive decline: a mixed methods study. Disability and rehabilitation Person-centered goal setting was feasible: 30 people with Parkinson's disease and subjective cognitive decline set 166 goals, averaging 5.53 each, and 144 goals were rated seven or higher importance. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Using Machine Learning to Examine Suicidal Ideation After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems National Database Study. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation A machine learning model predicted suicidal ideation one year after TBI with excellent accuracy. Depressed mood and guilt were the strongest predictors, followed by anhedonia and concentration difficulties. Demographic and injury severity factors added no predictive value. This suggests screening for specific depression symptoms may be more useful than general risk factors. PT OT Cohort 2022 Sex and Racial/Ethnic Differences in Within-Stay Readmissions During Inpatient Rehabilitation Among Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation In 210,440 adults with traumatic brain injury, within-stay readmission rates were similar for men and women. Readmission was linked to older age, complications, lower admission function, and longer time from injury to rehabilitation; racial/ethnic minority patients had longer delays and stays before readmission. OT Cohort 2022 The Association Between Payer Source and Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Outcomes: A TBI Model Systems Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation In 8,558 adults under age 64 with moderate to severe TBI, worker's compensation/auto stayed longest in inpatient rehabilitation and had highest discharge independence, while uninsured stayed shortest. The insurance difference in discharge independence was no longer seen when length of stay was included. PT OT Narrative Review 2022 Effects of Exercise Mode on Improving Cardiovascular Function and Cardiorespiratory Fitness After Bariatric Surgery: A Narrative Review. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Aerobic exercise improves cardiorespiratory fitness in bariatric surgery patients, often without additional weight loss. Resistance training alone did not improve fitness but helped maintain muscle. Combining both is recommended to maximize health benefits and prevent muscle loss, though evidence remains limited and protocols need standardization. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Association Between Self-Reported Disability and Lifetime History of Traumatic Brain Injury With Loss of Consciousness Among Veterans and Nonveterans in North Carolina. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Veterans and nonveterans reporting a lifetime history of traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness had higher rates of current disability. Cognitive, independent living, and vision disabilities showed the strongest associations. This identifies a group needing careful functional assessment, but does not prove the injury caused the disability. PT OT SLP Other 2023 Views of in-person and virtual group exercise before and during the pandemic in people with Parkinson disease. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation People with Parkinson disease who moved from in-person to virtual group exercise reported maintaining or improving mobility and balance. They valued the social connection and convenience of Zoom classes, though few had been referred to the program by a doctor. PT OT Cohort 2022 Prediction of bowel management independence after ischemic spinal cord injury. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine A single motor strength score taken within 40 days of ischemic spinal cord injury predicted who would regain independent bowel management at one year. The model showed fair accuracy but missed many patients who would not recover, so use it to guide expectations rather than to rule out need for support. ← Previous PAGE 26 OF 56 Next →
