PT OT RCT 2018 Reducing barriers to healthy weight: Planned and responsive adaptations to a lifestyle intervention to serve people with impaired mobility. Disability and health journal People with mobility impairments received an adapted group weight-loss program with phone sessions, arm-based activity tracking, adaptive cooking, caregiver support, problem-solving, and other changes. The paper describes the adaptation, not tested effectiveness. PT OT Cohort 2017 Hypervigilance to pain affects activities of daily living: an examination using the Japanese version of the pain vigilance awareness questionnaire. Journal of physical therapy science In 50 elderly patients with chronic pain, hypervigilance and pain intensity were the only factors significantly linked to disability. Anxiety, depression, fear of movement, and catastrophizing did not independently predict daily living limitations. OT Cohort 2018 Medication use by adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Most adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome took psychotropic medication, and use stayed stable over three years. Higher autism symptoms, behaviour problems, mental health diagnoses and family income were associated with greater psychotropic medication use. PT OT Cohort 2017 Relationship between psychophysiological factors and prognosis for activities of daily living in patients with stroke in a recovery rehabilitation unit: a preliminary study. Journal of physical therapy science At admission, worse motor paralysis and higher depression scores were associated with poorer daily living function 2 months later in 13 stroke patients in a rehabilitation unit. This does not show that treating these problems improves daily living. PT OT RCT 2018 Functional Reach, Depression Scores, and Number of Medications Are Associated With Number of Falls in People With Chronic Stroke. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation In people with chronic stroke, more medications and higher depression scores predicted more falls. Functional reach distance also predicted falls, with a cutoff of 18.15 cm for recurrent falls. Other common tests like Berg Balance and Timed Up and Go did not distinguish fallers. PT OT SLP Case Series 2017 Prospective investigation of FOXP1 syndrome. Molecular autism Children with FOXP1 mutations had delayed speech and language, motor and visual-motor deficits, and universal dysarthria. Expressive language tested better than receptive. Early PT, SLP, and OT were recommended, not tested. PT OT Cohort 2017 Relation of depressive symptoms to outcome of CI movement therapy after stroke. Rehabilitation psychology Depressive symptoms did not stop stroke patients from improving arm use after Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy. Patients with clinically significant depression improved just as much as those without. Depression scores also dropped slightly, but the change was too small to be clinically meaningful. OT Cohort 2018 Anxiety in Williams Syndrome: The Role of Social Behaviour, Executive Functions and Change Over Time. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parent-rated anxiety in Williams syndrome rose over four years, but the study could not show that change was real. Anxiety was linked to difficulty shifting attention, and to social-functioning problems. OT SLP Cohort 2018 The Association Between Child and Family Characteristics and the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Caregivers of Children with Autism in Mid-Childhood. Journal of autism and developmental disorders 48% of caregivers of children with autism aged 8 to 12 met criteria for mental health difficulties, and wellbeing was lower than expected. Child behaviour problems, poor daily living skills and intellectual disability were linked to distress; core autism symptoms were not. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Long-term behavioural outcomes after paediatric convulsive status epilepticus: a population-based cohort study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Children who had convulsive status epilepticus, even without epilepsy, showed more behavioural problems than peers. Screening should not stop at seizure control, as many issues go undetected. Those with lower IQ or prior seizures were at highest risk. OT Cohort 2018 Intergenerational Consequences: Women's Experiences of Discrimination in Pregnancy Predict Infant Social-Emotional Development at 6 Months and 1 Year. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Mothers who reported more everyday discrimination during pregnancy had infants with greater separation anxiety and negative emotionality at six months and one year. This link was not explained by the mother's distress, suggesting discrimination itself may directly affect infant development. OT SLP RCT 2018 Computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation in persons with multiple sclerosis: Results of a multi-site randomized controlled trial with six month follow-up. Disability and health journal Mixed results: both groups improved over 6 months, and the group and computer program had some advantages on selected cognitive and self-report tests, but the paper reports separate outcomes rather than one overall primary-outcome result. OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 How do Parents Manage Irritability, Challenging Behaviour, Non-Compliance and Anxiety in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders? A Meta-Synthesis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of children with autism often manage challenging behaviour by changing the environment and routine rather than the child. Strategies included avoiding triggers, giving in to demands to prevent meltdowns, and constant supervision. This reflects high family burden, not proven efficacy. PT OT Cohort 2018 Preoperative Risk Factors for Postoperative Falls in Persons Undergoing Hip or Knee Arthroplasty: A Longitudinal Study of Data From the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Patients who had fallen in the year before hip or knee replacement, or who reported higher depressive symptoms, were significantly more likely to fall two or more times in the two years after surgery. Hip replacement carried over double the risk of multiple falls compared to knee replacement. PT OT RCT 2018 Home-based pre-surgical psychological intervention for knee osteoarthritis (HAPPiKNEES): a feasibility randomized controlled trial. Clinical rehabilitation A home-based psychological therapy before knee surgery was feasible but had high dropout. One physical function score improved significantly at six months, but the authors state this is likely a chance finding due to multiple comparisons. Most participants did not complete the planned sessions. OT SLP Pilot 2018 Defining behavioral components of social functioning in adults with autism spectrum disorder as targets for treatment. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In adults with autism, measures of social motivation, anxiety, and skills moved together. Measures of social cognition and community functioning did not. Motivation also moved with anxiety, skills, community, and autism symptoms, but not cognition. OT Pilot 2018 Development of a novel positive psychology-based intervention for couples post-stroke. Rehabilitation psychology An 8-week positive psychology program for stroke survivors and partners was feasible and acceptable: 10 of 11 couples completed, and couples exceeded the minimum weekly activity requirement. It did not test whether the program improves mood or function. PT OT Survey 2018 Chronic pain prevalence and associated factors in adolescents with and without physical disabilities. Developmental medicine and child neurology Adolescents with physical disabilities reported chronic pain more often than peers without disabilities. Pain was linked to depression, anxiety and insomnia, but having both disability and pain did not add extra risk. OT Cohort 2018 Psychological well-being in individuals living in the community with traumatic brain injury. Brain injury People after traumatic brain injury who were not working or volunteering reported low life satisfaction, high distress, and cognitive difficulties. Several well-being questions tended to agree, so a single question may not show the whole picture. PT OT Cohort 2018 Changes in biopsychosocial outcomes for a mixed cohort of ICU survivors. The South African journal of physiotherapy Physical quality of life scores improved over 6 months among 24 ICU survivors. Muscle strength scores changed, while walking distance and mental health changed less clearly, and depression screening stayed mild. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Scoping Review of Dance for Adults With Fibromyalgia: What Do We Know About It? JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Evidence on dance for fibromyalgia is sparse and inconsistent. Most studies combined dance with other therapies, making it impossible to isolate dance's specific effect. Safety was rarely assessed, and methodological flaws in trials prevent firm recommendations for clinical practice. OT Survey 2017 Relationships between Caregiving Stress, Depression, and Self-Esteem in Family Caregivers of Adults with a Disability. Occupational therapy international Family caregivers of adults with disability reported more stress when depression was higher, and lower self-esteem when financial or psychological stress was higher. Older spousal caregivers with no paid work and long caregiving hours reported more stress. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Should I stay or should I go? A prospective investigation examining individual factors impacting employment status among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Work (Reading, Mass.) Among employed people with multiple sclerosis, those considering leaving work had higher physical fatigue, lower self-efficacy, and relied more on behavioral disengagement than humor. This pattern appeared early in the disease course, suggesting psychosocial factors drive job decisions before physical disability peaks. PT OT RCT 2018 Effects on work ability, job strain and quality of life of monitoring depression using a self-assessment instrument in recurrent general practitioner consultations: A randomized controlled study. Work (Reading, Mass.) Adding structured depression self-assessment to GP visits improved patients' perceived work ability at 3 months and increased perceived social support at 12 months. However, it did not reduce job strain, improve quality of life, or shorten sick leave compared to usual care. OT Pilot 2018 Towards a Treatment for Intolerance of Uncertainty for Autistic Adults: A Single Case Experimental Design Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Four autistic adults completed an adapted uncertainty programme, and all attended every session. Confidence in handling a chosen uncertain situation generally increased for three participants, but changes were inconsistent and this was not an efficacy trial. OT Other 2018 Lessons learned from women in leadership positions. Work (Reading, Mass.) There is no clinical finding to act on. This is a leadership commentary about women in professional workplaces. OT Cohort 2018 Lifelong Parenting of Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Growth Trends Over 20 Years in Midlife and Later Life. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Parents of adults with developmental disabilities had more depressive symptoms, poorer health, and fewer social visits at age 71 than comparison parents. Those living with their adult child showed rising depression over time. OT Qualitative 2018 Critical factors for the return-to-work process among people with affective disorders: Voices from two vocational approaches. Work (Reading, Mass.) People with depression or bipolar disorder who were unemployed said a dedicated employment specialist helped them feel believed in and more hopeful about work. Traditional step-by-step services felt fragmented, impersonal, and discouraging. PT OT SLP Case Series 2018 Delineation of the genetic and clinical spectrum of Phelan-McDermid syndrome caused by SHANK3 point mutations. Molecular autism In 17 people with SHANK3 gene changes, language was severely delayed, and 11 of them lost speech, movement, or behavioral abilities later in childhood or adolescence. This describes a rare condition, not a tested treatment. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2018 Everyday Activities for Children with Mitochondrial Disorder: A Retrospective Chart Review. Occupational therapy international Children with mitochondrial disorders across all functioning levels engaged in the same nine activity categories, from self-care to leisure. The difference was not what they did, but how: varying levels of assistance, adaptive devices, and energy management were required for participation. OT Cohort 2018 Predictors of quality of life for autistic adults. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Autistic adults reported lower quality of life than UK norms. A current mental health condition, higher social communication impairment, and being female were associated with lower physical, psychological, or environmental quality of life; employment, relationships, and support were associated with better. OT Qualitative 2018 Life-changing or trivial: Electricians' views about electrical accidents. Work (Reading, Mass.) Electricians described shocks as sometimes life-changing, with persistent fear, guilt and resentment, and said health care often ignored mental effects and follow-up. Workplace support and how the accident was handled mattered for work recovery. OT Cohort 2018 Influence of study population definition on the effect of age on outcomes after blunt head trauma. Brain injury Older adults after blunt head trauma had better 1-month functional recovery and fewer post-concussion symptoms than younger adults, whether or not they met TBI criteria. OT Case Series 2018 Use of parametric speaker for older people with dementia in a residential care setting: A preliminary study of two cases. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT In two residents with dementia, a ceiling-mounted directional speaker playing favorite music reduced wandering and agitation only while the music was on. There was no lasting effect after the session ended, and no change in overall dementia stage. OT Other 2018 Effects of object size and distance on reaching kinematics in patients with schizophrenia. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients with mild schizophrenia reached slower and less directly than healthy controls. Larger objects made reaching faster and more forceful; farther objects made it slower but more direct. Occupational therapists may use object size and distance to grade reaching tasks. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The role of biopsychosocial factors in the rehabilitation process of individuals with a stroke. Work (Reading, Mass.) Patients who started rehab more than 16 weeks after stroke, had no family care support, or were single or widowed showed significantly less improvement in mobility and daily activities. Depression and low self-efficacy at admission also predicted poor outcomes. Younger age under 55 was unexpectedly linked to lower efficacy. OT Other 2018 Concordance of assessments of clients' mental and behavioral health with in vivo assessment of work performance. Work (Reading, Mass.) Clients' self-reported mental and behavioral health did not track providers' observed work performance ratings. Providers' ratings of clients' mental health did track their work performance ratings moderately. Provider and client mental health ratings did not line up. OT Cohort 2019 The modifying effect of positive emotion on the relationship between cognitive impairment and disability among older Mexican Americans: a cohort study. Disability and rehabilitation Positive emotion did not change the link between cognitive impairment and new disability over time in older Mexican Americans. It did appear to narrow the gap in current disability between impaired and normal cognition. PT OT Survey 2019 Difficulty and independence in shopping among older Americans: more than just leaving the house. Disability and rehabilitation Broken steps and neighborhood disorder were linked to more shopping difficulty in older adults, but links weakened after health and physical capacity were considered. Check the route from the home when older adults report shopping difficulty. OT RCT 2018 Strengthened General Self-Efficacy with Multidisciplinary Vocational Rehabilitation in Women on Long-Term Sick Leave: A Randomised Controlled Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Compared with usual transfer, multidisciplinary vocational rehabilitation raised women's general self-efficacy from 2.29 to 2.74 on a 1 to 4 scale. Acceptance and commitment therapy alone did not. OT Qualitative 2019 The self-management balancing act of spousal care partners in the case of Parkinson's disease. Disability and rehabilitation Spousal care partners of people with Parkinson's described juggling caregiving with their own work, leisure and friendships. They used planning ahead, social contact and outside help while carrying both burden and compassion. OT SLP Other 2019 Factor Analysis of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale in a Sample of Two Year Olds with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 282 toddlers with autism diagnoses, CARS items grouped into three domains: social communication, repetitive behaviors and sensory sensitivities, and emotional reactivity. Total scores alone may hide uneven symptom profiles. OT Other 2018 Fatigue Is Associated With Global and Regional Thalamic Morphometry in Veterans With a History of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation In Veterans with mild TBI, higher self-reported fatigue was associated with smaller thalamic volume and localized shape reductions in the front and inner upper right thalamus. The finding links fatigue to brain structure, not to PTSD or depression alone. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Risk Factors for Self-injurious Behavior in an Inpatient Psychiatric Sample of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Naturalistic Observation Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 302 psychiatric inpatients with autism, 67.5% had self-injury at home, but only 24.8% showed daily self-injury in the hospital. Lower cognitive ability and high parent-rated self-injury predicted hospital risk. Most children with home self-injury did not display it in the hospital. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Factors Influencing Functional Outcomes and Return-to-Work After Amputation: A Review of the Literature. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Amputation recovery varies widely in walking, pain, prosthetic use, and work. Younger age, education, adjustment, prosthetic use, and job modifications were linked to return to work, not tested as causes. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Work Disability Trajectories Among Individuals with a Sick-Leave Spell Due to Depressive Episode ≥ 21 Days: A Prospective Cohort Study with 13-Month Follow Up. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Most people on sick leave for depression returned to work within four to nine months. Those who stayed absent were more often unemployed, had prior sick leave, or used more healthcare. Trajectories varied widely, so early risk factors help predict who might need longer support. OT Cohort 2018 Predictors of Return to Work 6 Months After the End of Treatment in Patients with Common Mental Disorders: A Cohort Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation In patients with common mental disorders, high occupational status and better self-rated work ability at end of treatment were linked to successful return to work at 6 months. Work participation did not change over the follow-up. This does not show that treatment caused it. PT OT Cohort 2018 Epidemiology of hip fracture in nursing home residents with multiple sclerosis. Disability and health journal Nursing home residents with multiple sclerosis had lower hip fracture rates than matched residents without MS, except in residents requiring extensive or total transfer assistance. Within MS, wandering, low BMI, antidepressants and opioids were linked to higher fracture risk. PT OT Pilot 2018 Can telerehabilitation games lead to functional improvement of upper extremities in individuals with Parkinson's disease? International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Parkinson's patients who played a home 'Fruit Picking' game for three weeks wrote letters and moved light objects faster, and scored better on hand dexterity and motor exams. No control group was used, so these gains cannot be separated from time or other factors. OT SLP Other 2018 Problem Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Association with Verbal Ability and Adapting/Coping Skills. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 346 psychiatric inpatients with autism, minimally verbal people did not have more problem behaviors than verbal people. Verbal people had more aggression and oppositional behavior. Lower coping skills were associated with more problem behaviors. ← Previous PAGE 9 OF 41 Next →
