OT SLP Case-Control 2018 Predictors of Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mood disorders, sleep problems, and higher social communication severity were associated with psychiatric hospitalization in children and adolescents with ASD. Higher adaptive functioning and married caregiver status were associated with lower likelihood. PT OT RCT 2019 Effect of Reassuring Information About Musculoskeletal and Mental Health Complaints at the Workplace: A Cluster Randomized Trial of the atWork Intervention. Journal of occupational rehabilitation The modified atWork programme (manager sessions, mental-health and back-pain employee sessions, one review session) did not reduce sick leave more than the original programme (back-pain employee sessions and peer support). Sick leave showed no significant difference between groups, and most other outcomes were similar. PT OT Cohort 2019 Psychosocial Comorbidities Related to Return to Work Rates Following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Older age and higher depression or anxiety scores predicted failure to return to work after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. State anxiety at three months was linked to not returning to work at twelve months. Screen for both mood and anxiety disorders to identify patients needing support. OT Systematic Review 2018 Systematic Review of Caregiver and Dyad Interventions After Adult Traumatic Brain Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Some caregiver and dyad interventions after adult TBI reduced caregiver depression and burden in 3 studies with positive results, but the evidence is too mixed to recommend one approach. PT OT SLP Other 2018 Quality of life and psychological well-being in the early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS): Importance of adopting a biopsychosocial model. Disability and health journal In newly diagnosed MS, anxiety and locus of control predicted 40% of quality of life variance, outweighing disease symptoms. Clinicians should assess coping and perceived control early, not just physical disability. OT Other 2018 Older Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Sweden: A Register Study of Diagnoses, Psychiatric Care Utilization and Psychotropic Medication of 601 Individuals. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Among older adults with registered autism spectrum disorder diagnoses who needed municipal support in Sweden, specialist psychiatric care use and psychotropic medication were common, particularly in those with Asperger’s syndrome or intellectual disability. OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2018 The Association Between Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Psychological Distress in Their Parents: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of children with autism report higher stress and mental health problems when their child has more emotional and behavioral difficulties. This link holds even after accounting for the child's autism severity, though it is weaker when a different person rates the child's behavior. PT OT RCT 2019 Change in Depression, Confidence, and Physical Function Among Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Depression scores did not change clearly. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment in a meaningful activity program had short-term gains in confidence and community participation; gains did not persist at follow-up. OT Survey 2019 Factorial Validity of the Work Ability Index Among Employees in Germany. Journal of occupational rehabilitation A single Work Ability Index score can be misleading. In 3968 German employees, the questionnaire's indicators formed two related parts: subjective work ability and resources, plus health-related problems. PT OT Cohort 2019 Predictors of Functional Change in a Skilled Nursing Facility Population. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) No measured factor predicted lower-extremity function change, severe disability at discharge, or slow walking at discharge in 140 skilled nursing facility patients. 87% improved meaningfully, but 69% had severe disability, and higher depression scores tracked with smaller gait-speed gains. OT Case-Control 2018 Evaluation of Executive Function and Mental Health in Retired Contact Sport Athletes. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Objective testing showed no executive-function difference between retired contact-sport athletes and non-contact athletes. Contact athletes rated themselves worse on working memory and initiation, and reported more anxiety symptoms. PT OT Survey 2018 Leisure Participation Patterns for School Age Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Findings from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health. Journal of autism and developmental disorders School-age children with autism had lower participation in physical, skill, and jobs or chores activities, especially from age 11 to 17. Screen-based recreation was similar, but social participation was lower at age 16 to 17. OT Meta-Analysis 2019 The Effect of Antidepressants on Depression After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Meta-analysis. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Antidepressants did not reduce depression after traumatic brain injury more than placebo in 5 randomized trials. Scores improved before and after treatment in uncontrolled studies, but that cannot separate drug effect from time or spontaneous improvement. OT SLP Other 2019 Depression Characterization and Race Among Stroke Survivors Receiving Inpatient Rehabilitation. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Depression was documented in 35% of white, 22% of African American, and 16.7% of other race/ethnicity stroke inpatient rehabilitation patients. New onset rates were 21.6%, 14.5%, and 16.7%. OT Other 2019 The TBI-CareQOL Measurement System: Development and Preliminary Validation of Health-Related Quality of Life Measures for Caregivers of Civilians and Service Members/Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Caregivers of people with lower functioning after TBI reported poorer quality of life than caregivers of people with higher functioning. New TBI-specific caregiver measures and existing quality-of-life scales both made this distinction in 560 caregivers. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Physical health in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children who screened positive for autism, ADHD or learning disorders had more physical problems than children who did not screen positive. Epilepsy, migraine, asthma, gut symptoms and daytime wetting were common, and having several disorders together was linked to more problems. PT OT Other 2018 Factors influencing the physical activity in daily life of male patients with different levels of severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Journal of physical therapy science Factors linked to daily steps differed by COPD stage. A daily routine went with higher steps at every stage; stage 4 also tracked mood and quality of life. Daily steps themselves did not differ clearly across stages. PT OT Other 2018 Effects of promoting daily physical activity on physical and mental health in older individuals. Journal of physical therapy science Physical fitness did not improve more than control. With accelerometer-based nurse counselling, tailored step goals, and health seminars, older adults increased average daily steps, vitality, and social functioning; control also wore accelerometers, received seminars, and increased steps. OT SLP Survey 2019 University Students with Autism: The Social and Academic Experiences of University in the UK. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic university students in the UK reported more social and academic difficulties than non-autistic peers, including thoughts of withdrawal. Many still described academic strengths and wanted friendships. These are self-reported experiences, not evidence that any support works. OT RCT 2019 Five-year follow-up of a cluster-randomized controlled trial of a client-centred activities of daily living intervention for people with stroke. Clinical rehabilitation Five years after stroke, a client-centred daily living intervention did not improve participants' perceived participation compared with usual daily living care. Their significant others had fewer depression signs, but this was not the main result. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Clinical correlates of sluggish cognitive tempo in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice In adolescents with autism, sluggish cognitive tempo symptoms were linked to higher autism severity and more anxiety or depression. Attention-deficit symptoms were linked to more rule-breaking. Both were linked to daily executive function problems, but sluggish tempo specifically related to planning and memory. OT Other 2018 Alterations in electrophysiological indices of perceptual processing and discrimination are associated with co-occurring emotional and behavioural problems in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Molecular autism In adolescents with autism, stronger brain response to unexpected sound differences was linked to more parent-rated behaviour problems, but this link faded when autism severity was considered. More anxiety symptoms were linked to stronger brain response to the first repeated sound after a change. PT OT Other 2018 Machine learning algorithms for activity recognition in ambulant children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Machine learning models accurately identified brisk walking and sedentary time in children with cerebral palsy using wrist or hip sensors. Combining both locations improved accuracy. Comfortable walking was often misclassified as brisk walking, so current models cannot reliably distinguish walking speeds. OT Cohort 2019 A Comparison of Satisfaction With Life and the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended After Traumatic Brain Injury: An Analysis of the TRACK-TBI Pilot Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Six months after TBI, 31% had a mismatch between functional recovery and life satisfaction. Depression at six months was linked to lower satisfaction. Ask about mood, not just recovery. OT SLP Other 2019 ASD Comorbidity in Fragile X Syndrome: Symptom Profile and Predictors of Symptom Severity in Adolescent and Young Adult Males. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In adolescent and young adult males with fragile X syndrome, weaker sentence construction was associated with more severe autism symptoms, especially social communication symptoms. Repetitive behaviors were associated with nonverbal IQ and anxiety, avoidance, or hyperactivity. OT RCT 2018 Generalizing remotely supervised transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS): feasibility and benefit in Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Ten home tDCS sessions paired with cognitive training were feasible in 16 people with Parkinson's disease. Fatigue, sleep, visual learning and reaction time scores did not show a clear change; negative affect scores decreased, but this was a small pilot. PT OT Other 2019 Psychometric Evaluation of the Improved Work-Disability Functional Assessment Battery. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation The updated work-disability self-report generally gave consistent scores when answered twice five days apart, but some physical and mental health scales were less stable. This is not evidence it improves care. PT OT Other 2019 PROMIS Physical and Emotional Health Scores Are Worse in Musculoskeletal Patients Presenting to Physiatrists than to Other Orthopedic Specialists. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Patients choosing physiatrists reported worse physical and emotional health than those seeing surgeons or other specialists. This holds true even after adjusting for age, sex, and race. Clinicians should expect higher baseline symptom burden and potential biopsychosocial complexity in this referral group. PT OT Other 2019 Dysfunction, activity limitations, participation restriction and contextual factors in South African women with pelvic organ prolapse. The South African journal of physiotherapy South African women awaiting prolapse surgery reported poor quality of life mainly through emotional, social and sleep problems. Physical activity limits were not the main issue. Many had heart disease or depression and rarely exercised, suggesting these lifestyle factors need addressing before pelvic floor therapy. OT Other 2019 Personal resource profiles of individuals with chronic pain: Sociodemographic and pain interference differences. Rehabilitation psychology Personal resource groups were found in chronic pain samples, but pain interference differences were mixed: fibromyalgia low versus high groups did not differ after depression was considered, while disability pain groups stayed different over four years. PT OT SLP Pilot 2019 The effect of the Hambisela programme on stress levels and quality of life of primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy: A pilot study. The South African journal of physiotherapy Caregiver stress and total quality of life did not significantly change after Hambisela. Daily activities became more stressful. This underpowered pilot cannot show whether the programme helps. PT OT Narrative Review 2019 Tele-monitored tDCS rehabilitation: feasibility, challenges and future perspectives in Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Remote tDCS for Parkinson's is feasible and safe, with high compliance and mild side effects. Efficacy data is pending or limited to small open-label studies, so it should not be used as a proven treatment for motor or cognitive symptoms yet. OT Survey 2019 Factors associated with depression and anxiety in children with intellectual disabilities. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with intellectual disability who also had autism, ADHD, frequent pain, or bullying were more likely to have depression or anxiety. Hispanic children with intellectual disability and children with Down syndrome were less likely. This cannot show cause. OT Systematic Review 2019 Family factors associated with participation of children with disabilities: a systematic review. Developmental medicine and child neurology Lower parental education, lower socio-economic status, poorer parental mental health, lower self-efficacy, less support, less time, and less activity orientation were associated with reduced participation in children with disabilities. Family income was inconsistent. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Pregnancy Outcomes in Women with Spinal Cord Injuries: A Population-Based Study. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Mothers with spinal cord injury, paralysis, or spina bifida faced high risks of infection, blood clots, and preterm birth. Infants were often born early or small. However, these babies did not have higher rates of hospitalization or death in their first two years compared to other infants. OT Survey 2019 Mental health disorders, participation, and bullying in children with cerebral palsy. Developmental medicine and child neurology Only some mental health disorders were more common in children with cerebral palsy after accounting for other factors: anxiety, conduct problems, and multiple disorders. Difficulty with friendships and bullying were associated with these; activity participation alone was not. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Investigating the factors underlying adaptive functioning in autism in the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research For autistic people aged 6 to 31, parent-reported social difficulties were linked to poorer everyday adaptive skills and bigger gaps between IQ and daily functioning. Repetitive behaviours, sensory symptoms, anxiety, depression, and ADHD were not linked when other factors were considered. PT OT Survey 2019 Late life disability and experienced wellbeing: Are economic resources a buffer? Disability and health journal Older adults whose impairments interfered more with regular activities reported lower emotional wellbeing during daily tasks. Middle income softened this link. Wealth did not buffer it, and higher wealth was tied to lower wellbeing. OT Cohort 2019 Hospital readmissions among older people with intellectual disability in comparison with the general population. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Older people with intellectual disability were more likely to be readmitted within 30 days, especially after nervous, musculoskeletal, respiratory or digestive admissions. Risk was lower for mental, behavioural and circulatory diagnoses. Review discharge plans. OT Cohort 2019 Depressive symptoms in caregivers immediately after stroke. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Depressive symptoms stayed similar from 2 to 6 weeks, but 57% of caregivers had at least mild symptoms early. Uncertainty, stress, coping, support, income, and stroke-survivor function were linked to symptoms; cortisol was not. OT Survey 2019 Social and nonsocial reward moderate the relation between autism symptoms and loneliness in adults with ASD, depression, and controls. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In adults with autism, loneliness was the strongest link to depressive symptoms. People with less pleasure in social and everyday activities were lonelier regardless of autism symptoms; people with more pleasure showed a stronger autism-loneliness link. OT Other 2019 Depressive Symptoms and Care Demands Among Primary Caregivers of Young Children with Evidence of Congenital Zika Virus Infection in Brazil. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Caregivers of children with evidence of congenital Zika who screened positive for developmental delay had higher depression scores and more care demands. Among caregivers without child care support, difficulty covering basic expenses was linked to depression. Home health care hours were not linked to depression. OT SLP Survey 2019 Flourishing in children with autism spectrum disorders. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism had lower parent-rated social competence and behavioral control than peers, but school motivation was similar. This helps therapists target social and regulation goals, but it does not show treatment works. OT Qualitative 2019 "Moving on" through the locked ward system for women with intellectual disabilities. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Women and staff described moving on as proving behaviour change, not pursuing personal goals. Trust, gradual control and shared goals were described by some as helping, while accepting aggression and compliance were expected. OT Other 2019 A 'choice', an 'addiction', a way 'out of the lost': exploring self-injury in autistic people without intellectual disability. Molecular autism Among 103 autistic adults without intellectual disability, depression, anxiety, difficulty identifying emotions and sensory sensitivity were linked to whether people currently or formerly self-injured. Many described self-injury as coping or emotional regulation. The study did not test whether treating these factors helps. OT Other 2019 Adaptation of the Possibilities for Activity Scale for women encountering cancer (PActS-W). Australian occupational therapy journal The PActS-W asks women after cancer surgery what activities they feel they should be doing and what they believe they could do. In 186 women, a shortened version showed consistent scores and related to quality of life. It may guide OT discussions about activity expectations. OT Cohort 2019 Flexible assertive community treatment for individuals with a mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning: results of a longitudinal study in the Netherlands. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Across clients in Dutch flexible assertive community teams, admissions, social and psychological problem scores, police contacts, risk ratings, housing problems and disturbance decreased. Work, money, substance use, global functioning and satisfaction did not improve. OT Survey 2018 Sensory Overresponsivity, Loneliness, and Anxiety in Taiwanese Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Occupational therapy international Higher sensory avoiding was linked to greater anxiety and loneliness in adults with ASD. Loneliness was linked to both and may help account for the link. OT Survey 2018 Self-reported health conditions and related driving reduction in older drivers. Occupational therapy in health care Musculoskeletal conditions were the most common self-reported reason older drivers reduced driving in the past year. Women were more likely than men to report reducing driving because of health problems. Ask about joint pain, arthritis, and hip or knee replacement. PT OT SLP Other 2019 Sleep problems contribute to post-concussive symptoms in service members with a history of mild traumatic brain injury without posttraumatic stress disorder or major depressive disorder. NeuroRehabilitation In service members with remote mild TBI, sleep problems were linked to post-concussive symptoms mainly when PTSD or depression was absent. Daytime dysfunction and nighttime disruptions were associated with somatosensory symptoms, not cognitive or balance symptoms. ← Previous PAGE 10 OF 41 Next →
