PT OT Pilot 2019 Post-tuberculosis health-related quality of life, lung function and exercise capacity in a cured pulmonary tuberculosis population in the Breede Valley District, South Africa. The South African journal of physiotherapy Cured pulmonary TB patients reported poor quality of life, walked 294.1 m on average, and 48% had abnormal lung function. Mental health scores were worse than physical health scores. OT Survey 2019 Mood Disorders in High-Functioning Autism: The Importance of Alexithymia and Emotional Regulation. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In adults with autism, autistic symptoms were not directly linked to depression, but were linked to depression and anxiety through difficulty identifying emotions and poorer emotion regulation. This is association, not proof of treatment. OT Cohort 2018 Prediction of changes in functional ability of inpatients with schizophrenia using logarithmic and linear regression modelling. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT For inpatients with schizophrenia, functional ability ratings by occupational therapists at therapy start and one month predicted discharge scores better with a curved recovery model than with a straight line. OT Pilot 2018 Effect of occupation-based interventions in patients with haematopoietic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy: A pilot randomised controlled trial. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients with haematopoietic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy who received occupation-based therapy using the ADOC activity tool had better emotional well-being and overall quality of life than those receiving impairment-based therapy. Strength, balance, walking and daily activities did not improve clearly. OT Systematic Review 2019 Effectiveness of paediatric occupational therapy for children with disabilities: A systematic review. Australian occupational therapy journal Top-down, activity-based interventions like CO-OP and CIMT have strong evidence for children with disabilities, while bottom-up approaches like NDT and sensory integration lack it. Parent-led home programs are as effective as therapist-delivered care. OT Other 2019 Effects of using activity diary for goal setting in occupational therapy on reducing pain and improving psychological and physical performance in patients after total knee arthroplasty: A non-randomised controlled study. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients after knee replacement who added an activity diary to occupational therapy had better walking pain, anxiety, steps, and physical activity than therapy alone. Resting pain, helplessness, and pain self-efficacy did not differ. OT Narrative Review 2019 Can Occupational Therapy Address the Occupational Implications of Hoarding? Occupational therapy international There is almost no occupational therapy evidence on hoarding, and existing responses often focus on psychology or forced clearing. A client-centred approach is proposed that helps people build safer, meaningful daily activities instead of only removing possessions. OT Qualitative 2019 Experience of Occupations among People Living with a Personality Disorder. Occupational therapy international People living with Cluster B personality disorder described both disapproved and valued occupations as ways to cope, control distress, or gain approval. Socially valued occupations could also bring stigma, overwork, and exclusion. OT Cohort 2019 Co-occurrence of Sensory Overresponsivity with Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Childhood and Early Adolescence. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Sensory overresponsivity was linked to OCD symptoms at the same age, not to later OCD symptoms. Tactile and auditory symptoms were associated with concurrent OCD symptoms at ages 8 and 13. OT Systematic Review 2019 Mindfulness meditation for workplace wellness: An evidence map. Work (Reading, Mass.) Mindfulness evidence for workplace wellness was mixed across 175 systematic reviews. Some reviews reported positive effects for nurse state anxiety and depression and for caregiver stress and depression, but educator effects were unclear and general workplace results were mixed. PT OT Cohort 2019 Disease Activity, Occupational Participation, and Quality of Life for Individuals with and without Severe Fatigue in Ankylosing Spondylitis. Occupational therapy international Most people with ankylosing spondylitis reported significant fatigue, which was linked to higher pain and lower quality of life. They managed it by pacing activities and modifying work, but said they received little guidance from clinicians on how to handle this symptom. OT SLP Survey 2019 Neuropsychiatric phenotypes and a distinct constellation of ASD features in 3q29 deletion syndrome: results from the 3q29 registry. Molecular autism High autism symptom scores were common in 3q29 deletion, including people without an autism diagnosis. Females had a 34-fold increased autism risk. Repetitive behaviours were most severe, while interest in social interaction was less impaired. PT OT RCT 2020 One-Year Comparison of a Community-Based Exercise Program Versus a Day Hospital-Based Exercise Program on Quality of Life and Mental Health in Severely Burned Children. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Both community-based and day-hospital exercise programs improved quality of life and physical function in severely burned children, with no significant difference between the two groups. Parents reported more emotional and social improvements in the community group, but overall outcomes were similar. OT Cohort 2020 Using a Biopsychosocial Model to Understand Long-Term Outcomes in Persons With Burn Injuries. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Pre-burn emotional health and avoidance coping were linked to burn adjustment over two years. Avoidance coping was associated with more distress, depressive symptoms and PTSD at one year, and more PTSD at two years. OT Cohort 2020 Satisfaction With Life Over Time in People With Burn Injury: A National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research Burn Model System Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Burn survivors split into two groups over 2 years: 224 kept high life satisfaction, while 154 started lower and got worse. Older age, unemployment before injury, and poorer mental health at discharge were more common in the worsening group. OT Cohort 2019 The Influence of Multi-morbidity on the Work Ability of Ageing Employees and the Role of Coping Style. Journal of occupational rehabilitation In employed Dutch adults, having more chronic health problems was linked to lower self-rated work ability. Mental health problems showed a stronger link than physical problems. Active coping was linked to better work ability, avoidant coping to worse. OT Survey 2020 The effects of service dogs on psychosocial health and wellbeing for individuals with physical disabilities or chronic conditions. Disability and rehabilitation People with a service dog reported better overall psychosocial health, including emotional, social, and work or school functioning, than people waiting for one. It was not associated with anger, companionship, or sleep. OT SLP Other 2020 Evaluation of a Transition to University Programme for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic students reported fewer worries about university after a three-day summer school and rated it helpful and enjoyable. The programme included many components, so it cannot show which part helped. PT OT Survey 2020 Cardiometabolic disease, depressive symptoms, and sleep disorders in middle-aged adults with functional disabilities: NHANES 2007-2014. Disability and rehabilitation After accounting for other factors, adults with severe functional disability were more likely to have cardiovascular disease and diabetes than adults without disability. Adults with moderate disability were not. Depressive symptoms and sleep disorders did not explain this. PT OT Case Report 2020 Improved Mobility, Cognition, and Disease Severity in Corticobasal Degeneration of an African American Man After 12 Weeks of Adapted Tango: A Case Study. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Short-term gains in mobility, cognition, and disease severity were seen after adapted tango in a man with corticobasal degeneration, but many gains faded by follow-up and depression worsened. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Risk Markers for Not Returning to Work Among Patients with Acquired Brain Injury: A Population-Based Register Study. Journal of occupational rehabilitation One year after brain injury, women, people born outside Sweden, lower education, aphasia, long hospital stays, mobility or self-care problems, pain, anxiety/depression, and lower satisfaction with rehabilitation process or planning were at higher risk of not returning to work. PT OT Cohort 2019 Longitudinal Effects of Medical Comorbidities on Functional Outcome and Life Satisfaction After Traumatic Brain Injury: An Individual Growth Curve Analysis of NIDILRR Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Data. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation After moderate-severe brain injury, motor and cognitive independence rose for years, then fell by 10 years. Life satisfaction stayed stable. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, diabetes, and other comorbidities were associated with different function or life-satisfaction trajectories. These are associations, not proven causes. OT RCT 2020 Effects of Dog Assisted Therapy for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Dog-assisted therapy lowered stress and family or friends reported easier social communication, but self-reported symptoms and self-esteem did not improve more than in the control group. The trial was small. OT Pilot 2019 Feasibility Study of Problem-Solving Training for Care Partners of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Burn Injury, or Stroke During the Inpatient Hospital Stay. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Care partners who completed problem-solving training during acute hospital stay reported high satisfaction and confidence after 2.6 sessions, but only 12 of 39 consented and few used app boosters. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Resilience facilitates adjustment through greater psychological flexibility among Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans with and without mild traumatic brain injury. Rehabilitation psychology Veterans with resilient personality traits had better mental health and function over a year, largely because they had greater psychological flexibility. This protective effect held true regardless of whether the veteran had a history of mild traumatic brain injury. OT Cohort 2020 Predictors of Change in Employment Status and Associations with Quality of Life: A Prospective International Study of People with Multiple Sclerosis. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Among people with MS, moderate or severe disability and lower education predicted losing employment over 2.5 years. Retiring because of MS was associated with a drop in mental health quality of life. So watch for mood changes after job loss. PT OT Pilot 2019 Alexithymia in adolescents with and without chronic pain. Rehabilitation psychology Adolescents with chronic pain reported greater difficulty identifying feelings than healthy peers, even when depressive and anxiety symptoms were similar. This difficulty was linked to more pain bothersomeness and interference with usual activities, not pain intensity. OT Cohort 2019 Depression as a Predictor of Long-term Employment Outcomes Among Individuals With Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Depression after moderate-to-severe TBI was associated with lower long-term competitive employment. People who were depressed at 1 or 2 years were less likely to be employed at 2 or 5 years, even after accounting for injury-related prognosis and current work. OT Survey 2019 The Vulnerability Experiences Quotient (VEQ): A Study of Vulnerability, Mental Health and Life Satisfaction in Autistic Adults. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Autistic adults reported more negative life experiences than non-autistic adults, including bullying, abuse, financial hardship, job loss, police contact, and suicide attempts. These experiences were linked with higher anxiety, higher depression, and lower life satisfaction. PT OT Qualitative 2019 Beyond stereotypes of cerebral palsy: Exploring the lived experiences of young Canadians. Child: care, health and development Young adults with cerebral palsy described pain, fatigue and anxiety, and said childhood services had ended. Participation in work, education and relationships mattered more to identity than motor goals, while inaccessible environments and stigma limited it. OT Other 2019 Gaining Insights into Aggressive Behaviour in Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Latent Profile Analysis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 2079 children and adolescents with autism, two groups had higher aggression scores along with more anxiety, attention problems, hyperactivity and rigidity. Aggression appeared with both higher and lower IQ, so IQ alone did not separate those groups. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Social Network Mapping and Functional Recovery Within 6 Months of Ischemic Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Stroke survivors’ social networks shrank by an average of 1.25 people over six months. However, having a larger network at baseline predicted better physical function at three and six months, independent of stroke severity, age, or depression. OT Protocol 2019 Behavioral Activation Augmented With Mobile Technology for Depression and Anxiety in Chronic Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation No patient outcomes are reported yet. The protocol plans to test whether eight behavioral activation sessions with app prompts and texts improve depression or anxiety after chronic traumatic brain injury, compared with one in-person session, one telephone session, and eight weeks of texts. OT Other 2019 A Collaboration Between Game Developers and Rehabilitation Researchers to Develop a Web-Based App for Persons With Physical Disabilities: Case Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Rehabilitation researchers, game developers, and stakeholders developed a web app for people with spinal cord injury. The report describes accessibility choices and team lessons, not evidence that the app improves mental health or well-being. PT OT SLP Cohort 2020 Volunteering and its association with participation and life satisfaction following traumatic brain injury. Brain injury Volunteering after brain injury is linked to better life satisfaction, more community engagement, and more social contact. It is not linked to productivity like work or school hours. People who volunteer tend to have less severe impairments and drive independently. OT Systematic Review 2019 Experiences of interventions aiming to improve the mental health and well-being of children and young people with a long-term physical condition: A systematic review and meta-ethnography. Child: care, health and development Children with long-term physical conditions, families and staff valued interventions that were accessible, safe, peer-connected, everyday-life focused and confidence-building. These were themes, not proof interventions improve mental health. OT Cohort 2020 Factors associated with the remission of insomnia after traumatic brain injury: a traumatic brain injury model systems study. Brain injury In 40 people with insomnia after moderate or severe TBI, those whose insomnia resolved reported better sleep quality, less fatigue and depression, and more community participation than those with persistent insomnia. Medication use was similar, so this cannot show what caused remission. OT Pilot 2020 The Value in Mental Health Screening for Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury: What Patients Tell Us. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Patients with spinal cord injury found mental health screening acceptable and intended to follow recommendations, but described the process as incomplete. They concealed substance use and felt the questions missed their personal strengths and resilience. PT OT Qualitative 2020 A qualitative study on user acceptance of a home-based stroke telerehabilitation system. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Stroke patients who used a home telerehabilitation system combining games, exercises, education, and therapist video sessions valued feedback and connection, and found games enjoyable. They wanted reliable technical support, flexible schedules, and visible progress. OT Cohort 2019 Early childhood predictors of global competence in adolescence for youth with typical development or intellectual disability. Research in developmental disabilities A single overall adolescent functioning pattern fit youth with typical development and intellectual disability. For typical development, early emotion dysregulation and negative parenting linked to lower functioning; for intellectual disability, negative parenting and maternal depression linked to lower functioning. Positive parenting was not linked. PT OT Cohort 2019 Belief, Confidence, and Motivation to Use the Paretic Upper Limb in Daily Life Over the First 24 Weeks After Stroke. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT Stroke survivors remained highly confident and motivated to use their weak arm over the first six months, regardless of physical recovery or mood. This suggests therapists can assume patients are ready to engage and should focus on removing practical barriers rather than boosting morale. PT OT SLP Pilot 2020 Feasibility of integrative games and novel therapeutic game controller for telerehabilitation of individuals chronic post-stroke living in the community. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Seven chronic stroke survivors trained at home for four weeks using virtual games. Self-reported arm function and depression improved significantly, but clinical measures of arm movement showed no significant change. Technical problems were frequent, and the system's owner funded the study. OT Cohort 2020 Children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and Their Caregivers: Capturing Health-Related and Care-Related Quality of Life. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism had lower health-related quality of life than Dutch peers, especially self-care, usual activities, and anxiety/depression. Primary caregivers' own health-related quality of life was not lower, but lower care-related quality of life was linked to their anxiety, pain, and child anxiety. OT Cohort 2019 Parkinson's family needs and caregiver mental health: A cross-cultural comparison between Mexico and the United States. NeuroRehabilitation Caregivers in Mexico and the United States had similar levels of anxiety and depression. US caregivers reported more unmet emotional and community support needs. Mexican caregivers reported more unmet instrumental needs, such as help with daily tasks. OT SLP Other 2020 Autism and depression are connected: A report of two complimentary network studies. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults and people with depression report similar levels of worry and low perceived control over their lives. While these factors link autism and depression symptoms, the study cannot prove that low control causes either condition, nor that improving it will resolve them. OT Other 2020 Dissociation in How Core Autism Features Relate to Interoceptive Dimensions: Evidence from Cardiac Awareness in Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In autistic children, greater overall autism severity was linked to higher confidence on the heartbeat discrimination task and lower confidence on the heartbeat tracking task. This does not show causation. PT OT Cohort 2020 Using Inferred Mobility Status to Estimate the Time to Major Depressive Disorder Diagnosis Post-Spinal Cord Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation After spinal cord injury, major depression was diagnosed in 20.87% of insured people, with a median time of 86.0 days, and was more common when durable medical equipment claims suggested greater mobility impairment. PT OT SLP Cohort 2020 Prevalence of physical and mental health conditions in Medicare-enrolled, autistic older adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic older adults had significantly higher odds of nearly every physical and mental health condition compared to non-autistic peers. This included high risks for epilepsy, Parkinson’s, gastrointestinal issues, and suicidality. Clinicians should anticipate complex comorbidities in this population. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Psychiatric Symptoms: Prevalence, Co-occurrence, and Functioning Among Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborns at Age 10 Years. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP About 30% of 10-year-olds born extremely preterm screened positive for at least one psychiatric disorder. Co-occurrence was frequent, especially between internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Higher numbers of co-occurring disorders were linked to worse school, social, and physical functioning. OT SLP Survey 2020 The Profiles and Correlates of Psychopathology in Adolescents and Adults with Williams, Fragile X and Prader-Willi Syndromes. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In Williams syndrome, current health problems and auditory sensory difficulties predicted higher emotional disturbance, while in Prader-Willi syndrome poorer adaptive skills predicted more psychopathology. In Fragile X syndrome, none of these factors predicted mental health difficulties. ← Previous PAGE 11 OF 41 Next →
