PT OT RCT 2017 Effects of Inpatient Multicomponent Occupational Rehabilitation versus Less Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation on Somatic and Mental Health: Secondary Outcomes of a Randomized Clinical Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation The main outcome, sickness absence, showed no difference between the inpatient and outpatient programs. Health outcomes showed no substantial difference. PT OT SLP Other 2017 Functional disability in patients with low back pain: the mediator role of suffering and beliefs about pain control in patients receiving physical and chiropractic treatment. Brazilian journal of physical therapy In chronic back pain patients, subjective suffering mediated the link between depression and disability in both physical and chiropractic groups. Believing pain is controlled by chance events mediated this link only in the physical therapy group. Anxiety did not act through these mediators. PT OT Cohort 2017 Quantitative trunk sway and prediction of incident falls in older adults. Gait & posture Forward-backward trunk sway during standing predicted future falls in older adults, but side-to-side sway did not. The test had low sensitivity, so it should not replace a full fall risk assessment. OT Other 2017 Relationship of health, sociodemographic, and economic factors and life satisfaction in young-old and old-old elderly: a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. Journal of physical therapy science Among Korean adults aged 65 or older, lower life satisfaction was associated with depression, cognitive impairment, more daily dependence, less education, less family contact, lower assets, and Medical Aid. For those 80+, age and one kind of social activity were associated; chronic disease was not. OT Narrative Review 2018 Personalised treatment for cognitive dysfunction in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Neuropsychological rehabilitation For schizophrenia spectrum disorders, matching cognitive remediation to baseline auditory processing may matter: patients with impaired auditory processing showed more cognitive and functional benefit from sensory training, while those without impairment did not. This is pilot evidence, not a proven treatment. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2017 Living with traumatic brain injury in a rural setting: supports and barriers across the continuum of care. Disability and rehabilitation Rural survivors and caregivers said returning home was hardest: local TBI expertise, transportation, financial help, and community ties often fell short. Urban rehab staff and family advocates helped, but few used available state supports. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 Systematic Review of Prognostic Factors for Return to Work in Workers with Sub Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain. Journal of occupational rehabilitation For workers with subacute or chronic low back pain, pain intensity and function do not predict return to work. Instead, delay in referral, attorney involvement, workers compensation issues, lower socioeconomic status, and poor recovery expectations predict delayed return. OT Cohort 2017 Work Characteristics and Return to Work in Long-Term Sick-Listed Employees with Depressive Symptoms. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Employees with depressive symptoms on long-term sick leave returned to full work about 30 days later at 1 year and over 50 days later at 2 years. Higher return-to-work confidence predicted earlier return; most job demands and resources did not. OT Pilot 2017 Reductions in Alexithymia and Emotion Dysregulation After Training Emotional Self-Awareness Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Phase I Trial. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation In 13 TBI adults who completed eight sessions of emotional awareness training, alexithymia and emotional awareness improved at post-test and 2-month follow-up. Anxiety and positive mood improved, and emotion regulation problems improved, but depression and negative mood did not. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Predictive Indices for Functional Improvement and Deterioration, Institutionalization, and Death Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation A new scoring system predicts which Medicare patients aged 65 or older will deteriorate, be institutionalized, or die within two years. It identifies risk factors like advanced age, living alone, and vision impairment to help clinicians plan care and prevent poor outcomes. PT OT Systematic Review 2018 Effectiveness of Workplace Interventions in Return-to-Work for Musculoskeletal, Pain-Related and Mental Health Conditions: An Update of the Evidence and Messages for Practitioners. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Interventions that combined components from several workplace domains had evidence of reducing lost time for workers off work with musculoskeletal, pain or mental health conditions. Work-focused CBT also reduced lost time and costs; traditional CBT alone did not reduce lost time. OT Cohort 2017 Group-Based Trajectory Analysis of Emotional Symptoms Among Survivors After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation After severe TBI, about 70% of 129 survivors had low depression that rose over 24 months, while 30% stayed high. Anxiety also split into low-stable and high-stable groups, and high depression or anxiety clustered with low life satisfaction. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 How Are Race, Cultural, and Psychosocial Factors Associated With Outcomes in Veterans With Spinal Cord Injury? Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation For veterans with spinal cord injury, race alone rarely predicted outcomes once other factors were considered. Instead, anxiety, self-esteem, and communication with providers drove quality of life and satisfaction, while medical and demographic factors drove participation levels. PT OT RCT 2017 The Relations of Cognitive, Behavioral, and Physical Activity Variables to Depression Severity in Traumatic Brain Injury: Reanalysis of Data From a Randomized Controlled Trial. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation CBT and usual care produced similar depression improvement. Across both groups, fewer negative thoughts and more rewarding activities were related to better mood; physical activity showed little consistent link. PT OT RCT 2018 Effect of Inpatient Multicomponent Occupational Rehabilitation Versus Less Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation on Sickness Absence in Persons with Musculoskeletal- or Mental Health Disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Journal of occupational rehabilitation For adults on sick leave with musculoskeletal, psychological or unspecific disorders, a 4+4 day inpatient multicomponent program did not reduce sickness absence more than a less comprehensive outpatient program. The outpatient program looked similar, not clearly better. PT OT Survey 2017 Aging, mobility impairments and subjective wellbeing. Disability and health journal In adults 60+, days when lower-body problems limited activities were linked to lower life satisfaction, worse daily emotions, and more pain and tiredness. Pain and tiredness were most affected, and worst among ages 65-74. OT Other 2018 Influence of an Interdisciplinary Re-employment Programme Among Unemployed Persons with Mental Health Problems on Health, Social Participation and Paid Employment. Journal of occupational rehabilitation The interdisciplinary re-employment programme did not significantly improve paid employment, voluntary work or health after 2 years compared with usual programmes. People who did get jobs had better physical health and fewer anxiety and depressive symptoms. OT Other 2018 The Deployment Trauma Phenotype and Employment Status in Veterans of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Veterans with mild TBI, PTSD and depression were most likely to be unemployed and not looking for work. The study did not show this was worse than PTSD and depression alone. Mild TBI alone was least likely to be unemployed. OT SLP Other 2018 Improving Assessment of Work Related Mental Health Function Using the Work Disability Functional Assessment Battery (WD-FAB). Journal of occupational rehabilitation The expanded WD-FAB profiles work-related mental health function in four areas: cognition-communication, resilience-sociability, self-regulation, and mood. Claimants reported lower cognition-communication and mood function than working-age adults. Use it as a self-report profile, not an eligibility test. PT OT Survey 2018 Prevalence and causes of work disability among working-age U.S. adults, 2011-2013, NHIS. Disability and health journal 10.4% of working-age U.S. adults reported work disability. Back or neck problems, depression, anxiety or emotional problems, and arthritis were the most common causes, even among people with other chronic conditions. PT OT Pilot 2017 Participation in physical activities for children with cerebral palsy: feasibility and effectiveness of physical activity on prescription. Archives of physiotherapy All 11 children improved in their chosen physical activities, and families accepted the programme. Accelerometer activity did not rise for every child, and two children's total activity fell. OT RCT 2017 Evaluating the Effectiveness of a School-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Intervention for Anxiety in Adolescents Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adolescents with ASD who received school-based CBT with teaching-assistant support and home projects showed greater reductions in parent, self and teacher-reported anxiety than wait-list controls. Teachers reported less social worry, but self-reported social worry did not differ. OT Cohort 2018 Parental sleep quality and behavior problems of children with autism. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Across 14 days, mothers' and fathers' previous-night sleep quality did not predict next-day behavior problems in their child with autism. Better sleep was associated with parents feeling more positive and less negative the next day. OT Qualitative 2018 Improving the Health and Well-Being of Adults With Conditions of a Genetic Origin: Views from Professionals, Syndrome Support Groups and Parents. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Professionals, support-group representatives and parents said genetic syndrome knowledge should guide proactive health checks and direct support staff awareness. They mostly wanted service changes, not cures. Parents of adults pointed to mental health as a barrier to independence. OT Meta-Analysis 2017 Anxiety Disorders in Williams Syndrome Contrasted with Intellectual Disability and the General Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Williams syndrome anxiety was common: 48% had at least one anxiety disorder, mostly phobias of noise and blood/injury. Rates exceeded intellectual disability and general population estimates. This reports how common anxiety was, not whether treatment works. PT OT SLP RCT 2017 Sertraline for Major Depression During the Year Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Sertraline did not improve depression scores more than placebo over 12 weeks after traumatic brain injury. Both groups got better. The only group difference was better information processing speed on a cognitive test for sertraline. OT SLP Survey 2017 Barriers to healthcare: Instrument development and comparison between autistic adults and adults with and without other disabilities. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults reported more healthcare barriers than adults with other disabilities or no disability. Anxiety, difficulty processing information quickly, cost, sensory discomfort in facilities, and trouble communicating with providers were especially common. OT Other 2017 The role of meaning in life: mediating the effects of perceived knowledge of stroke on depression and life satisfaction among stroke survivors. Clinical rehabilitation Among 192 older stroke survivors, higher perceived knowledge of stroke was linked to fewer depressive symptoms and greater life satisfaction. Meaning in life appeared to carry this link. These were baseline data, so giving information was not shown to cause improvement. PT OT Other 2018 The effects of a client-centered leisure activity program on satisfaction, self-esteem, and depression in elderly residents of a long-term care facility. Journal of physical therapy science Residents who received usual activities plus chosen individual leisure activities and elastic-band group exercise showed better performance and satisfaction, higher self-esteem, lower depression, and better upper-limb function. In the control group, upper-limb, self-esteem, and depression outcomes did not change significantly. OT SLP Other 2017 Diverse Profiles of Anxiety Related Disorders in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported anxiety profiles differed by syndrome: Cornelia de Lange had the broadest symptoms, especially separation and generalized anxiety; fragile X and Rubinstein-Taybi showed more selective patterns. Assess anxiety in intellectual disability with the syndrome in mind. OT SLP Cohort 2017 Mental health outcomes of developmental coordination disorder in late adolescence. Developmental medicine and child neurology Young people with DCD were more likely to report peer problems in late adolescence. The link to overall mental health difficulty and depressive symptoms was not clear once social communication difficulties were taken into account. OT Cohort 2017 Ecological Momentary Assessment of Pain, Fatigue, Depressive, and Cognitive Symptoms Reveals Significant Daily Variability in Multiple Sclerosis. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In ambulatory multiple sclerosis, pain, fatigue, depressed mood, and perceived cognitive function increased significantly from wake to bedtime. Fatigue varied most within the day, depressed mood least, and fatigue patterns differed by age and sex. PT OT Other 2017 How Do Pain, Fatigue, Depressive, and Cognitive Symptoms Relate to Well-Being and Social and Physical Functioning in the Daily Lives of Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis? Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation For people with MS, bad pain days were linked with worse social participation and lower-extremity functioning. Depressed mood and fatigue days were linked with worse well-being. In the main models, perceived cognitive changes showed no same-day links. PT OT Other 2018 Introducing the Adults with Chronic Healthcare Needs (ACHCN) definition and screening instrument: Rationale, supporting evidence and testing. Disability and health journal A proposed screener identifies working-age adults with chronic healthcare needs by combining ongoing conditions or functional difficulties with elevated service use or unmet need. Cognitive testing supported item wording, but it has not yet been field tested. OT SLP Survey 2017 Are autistic traits associated with suicidality? A test of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide in a non-clinical young adult sample. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Higher self-reported autistic traits were linked to more lifetime suicidal behavior in 163 young adults. The link ran through feeling like a burden on others and lacking social belonging. Ask about these feelings when assessing suicide risk. OT SLP Other 2018 Addressing medical needs of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders in a primary care setting. Autism : the international journal of research and practice 17 of 74 patients needed changes to the visit format after phone screening, and all 74 were successfully seen. Waiting rooms, touch, noise, light, and communication were barriers. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Depression and Depressive Symptoms in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Children with TBI report more depressive symptoms than peers, but rates vary widely and evidence does not confirm higher clinical depression diagnoses. Symptoms often persist beyond the acute phase, suggesting a need for ongoing mental health monitoring rather than assuming they resolve with physical recovery. OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Parents Suggest Which Indicators of Progress and Outcomes Should be Measured in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of young children with autism valued measuring happiness, anxiety, sensory discomfort, distress, aggression, sleep problems and parent stress, not only core social communication symptoms. They wanted assessments to capture daily living and family impact. OT Cohort 2018 Quality of Relationships With Caregivers, Depression, and Life Satisfaction After Dysvascular Lower Extremity Amputation. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation After first lower-limb amputation, people with more conflict with their main caregiver reported more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction. Caregiver support related to life satisfaction but not depression. Ask about strain in the relationship. PT OT Case-Control 2018 Effects of anterior weight-shifting methods on sitting balance in wheelchair-dependent patients with spinal cord injury. Journal of physical therapy science Wheelchair users with spinal cord injury reached further forward and moved their center of pressure more when extending arms than crossing them. Adding a ball changed little for them, unlike healthy adults. Arm position matters more than holding an object for sitting balance. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Behavioral Markers of Emergent Stranger Anxiety in Infants and Toddlers with Fragile X Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Infants with Fragile X showed less facial fear than controls. Within the group, stable distress vocalizations linked to later social withdrawal, while lower escape behaviors linked to higher autistic symptoms. These markers did not predict general anxiety. OT SLP RCT 2017 Effect of Caregiver Training on the Neurodevelopment of HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children and Caregiver Mental Health: A Ugandan Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Caregiver cognitive-stimulation training did not improve overall child development compared with health and nutrition training. All children received nutrition support. It worsened reported executive function problems and caregiver depression. OT Survey 2017 Mental Wellbeing of Family Members of Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Many family members of autistic adults reported worry, anxiety, stress and depression. Their own difficulty with uncertainty, plus the adult's mental health and lack of future preparedness, were associated with poorer wellbeing. OT RCT 2018 Use of Mental Health Services by Adolescents After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation After moderate to severe TBI, mental health service use stayed low and stable. The online family problem-solving program with counselor support did not change use compared with online TBI resources, and less than half of impaired adolescents received services. PT OT Qualitative 2018 Participant-Reported Benefits of Involvement in an Adaptive Sports Program: A Qualitative Study. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Adaptive sports participants described physical, social, and athletic identity benefits, but injury fear, transport, cost, time, and lack of program information limited sustained participation. Staff and peers helped them continue. OT Cohort 2017 Brief Report: Postsecondary Work and Educational Disruptions for Youth on the Autism Spectrum. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Half of 36 young adults with autism had job or college disruption, or did not take part, after leaving high school. Parents of those later disrupted had more depression, anxiety and lower quality of life before exit; measured youth characteristics did not differ. PT OT Pilot 2017 A Home-Based Telerehabilitation Program for Patients With Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Patients completed nearly all assigned home telerehabilitation days, and arm Fugl-Meyer scores increased, but this was a small uncontrolled pilot that also included daily L-Dopa or placebo. OT Cohort 2017 The effects of optimism, religion, and hope on mood and anxiety disorders in women with the FMR1 premutation. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR In mothers with the FMR1 premutation who had a child with fragile X syndrome, higher optimism was linked to lower lifetime depression and lower anxiety over time. Religious participation related to fragile X was linked to higher lifetime depression. Hope showed no clear link. OT SLP Survey 2018 Latent Class Analysis of ADHD Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Comorbidities. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Among 2,495 children with current parent-reported ADHD, 61.3% had another diagnosed condition. Four groups emerged: low comorbidity, internalizing disorders, developmental disorders, and high comorbidity, with different school-service patterns. PT OT SLP Survey 2017 Evaluation of spina bifida transitional care practices in the United States. Journal of pediatric rehabilitation medicine Spina bifida clinics vary widely in transition care. Most discuss transition with patients, but few have written protocols or confirm adult provider visits. Readiness assessments are rare, and communication between pediatric and adult teams is inconsistent. ← Previous PAGE 8 OF 41 Next →
