- SLPSurvey2019Mock Juror Perceptions of Credibility and Culpability in an Autistic Defendant.Journal of autism and developmental disordersMock jurors who were told the defendant had ASD and how it affected him rated him more honest and less blameworthy. They were more likely to choose not guilty and, when choosing guilty, more lenient in sentencing attitudes. Cognitive functioning ratings did not differ.
- SLPOther2019Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children with Low Mental Age.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn toddlers with autism functioning below a 12-month level, the ADOS often over-classified autism, while the CARS agreed more closely with clinical judgment. Early social behaviors like eye contact, name response, and joint attention helped separate autism from global delay.
- SLPOther2019The games they play: Observations of children with autism spectrum disorder on the school playground.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceFifty-five children with ASD spent 25% of observed recess and lunch time alone and 30% with peers. Most initiations and responses were successful. Self-stimulation was infrequent, mainly when alone.
- PTOTCohort2019Falls resulting in health care among older people with intellectual disability in comparison with the general population.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDROlder people with intellectual disability had more fall-related health care contacts than matched peers, especially at institutions and during daily activities like eating or hygiene. They sustained more head, hip, and leg injuries, required longer hospital stays, and were readmitted more often.
- OTQualitative2019A mixed-methods process evaluation of Family Navigation implementation for autism spectrum disorder.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceNavigators often struggle to set up community services and engage families, while training and fidelity monitoring are easily overlooked. Implementation fails when systems are complex, requiring better resource inventories and consistent supervision rather than just adding more steps.
- Cohort2019Atypical longitudinal development of functional connectivity in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAdolescents with autism did not show the typical age-related increase in opposition between two brain networks; typical peers did. No communication, behavior, or therapy outcomes were measured.
- Qualitative2019Living with support: Experiences of people with mild intellectual disability.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDSix adults with mild intellectual disability described staff as their closest social ties, yet felt let down by turnover and rigid boundaries. Continuity mattered most; one trusted key worker helped buffer the loss of others.
- OTCohort2019A Comparison of Satisfaction With Life and the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended After Traumatic Brain Injury: An Analysis of the TRACK-TBI Pilot Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationSix months after TBI, 31% had a mismatch between functional recovery and life satisfaction. Depression at six months was linked to lower satisfaction. Ask about mood, not just recovery.
- OTSLPOther2019ASD Comorbidity in Fragile X Syndrome: Symptom Profile and Predictors of Symptom Severity in Adolescent and Young Adult Males.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn adolescent and young adult males with fragile X syndrome, weaker sentence construction was associated with more severe autism symptoms, especially social communication symptoms. Repetitive behaviors were associated with nonverbal IQ and anxiety, avoidance, or hyperactivity.
- SLPOther2019Perceptual Discrimination of Speaking Style Under Cochlear Implant Simulation.Ear and hearingNormal-hearing Dutch listeners could tell careful read, retold story and casual conversation speech apart without cochlear implant simulation. With simulated implant hearing, style discrimination was less reliable, and word recognition fell as the simulation became more degraded.
- SLPOther2018Swallow Event Sequencing: Comparing Healthy Older and Younger Adults.DysphagiaHealthy older adults showed less variation in the order of swallow events than healthy young adults, and some timing differences appeared. These are healthy norms, not evidence that aging causes a swallowing disorder.
- PTOther2018Effects of a facilitating device on pelvic floor muscle contraction during breathing exercises.Journal of physical therapy scienceTen healthy men sat on a small foam roller and did seven breathing exercises, focusing on pelvic floor contraction. Bladder movement measured by ultrasound increased after exercise and remained higher one month later.
- SLPOther2018Pink1 -/- Rats Show Early-Onset Swallowing Deficits and Correlative Brainstem Pathology.DysphagiaRats with a Parkinson-related gene deletion swallowed larger boluses and moved them faster through the throat than normal rats. Chewing slowed with age but did not differ between groups. These are rat findings, not human swallowing evidence.
- PTOTSurvey2018Does stereopsis account for the link between motor and social skills in adults?Molecular autismIn 650 adults, self-reported poorer depth perception went with worse fine motor and coordination skills and lower social skill. Fine motor scores partly accounted for the depth perception and social skill link, but the study cannot show that vision treatment improves social skills.
- Case Report2018Subcellular organization of UBE3A in human cerebral cortex.Molecular autismIn brain tissue removed during epilepsy surgery, UBE3A was found in nuclei, cell bodies, and processes of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, and in glia. This describes protein location; it does not show a treatment works.
- PTOther2018Effect of change in passive stiffness following low-intensity eccentric hamstring exercise on peak torque angle.Journal of physical therapy scienceLow-intensity eccentric hamstring exercise with a 20-kg barbell did not shift the angle at which knee flexion torque peaked, but it increased hip and knee range of motion, lowered passive stiffness, and reduced peak knee flexion torque.
- PTRCT2018Stochastic resonance stimulation improves balance in children with cerebral palsy: a case control study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA very faint electrical noise at the ankles made standing steadier for children with cerebral palsy, but only when each child's best setting was found. It tested only quiet standing, not walking or daily function.
- SLPCase-Control2018Lingual and Jaw Kinematic Abnormalities Precede Speech and Swallowing Impairments in ALS.DysphagiaPeople with ALS who had no speech or swallowing symptoms moved their tongue differently during water drinking than controls. Their posterior tongue moved less and more slowly, and their jaw moved more and faster.
- SLPCohort2018Coordination of Pharyngeal and Laryngeal Swallowing Events During Single Liquid Swallows After Oral Endotracheal Intubation for Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.DysphagiaIn 11 ARDS patients after intubation, the time the larynx stayed closed was unchanged compared with healthy volunteers, but time to close the larynx was longer and the whole swallow took longer; only one aspirated.
- SLPOther2018Head Movements Allow Listeners Bilaterally Implanted With Cochlear Implants to Resolve Front-Back Confusions.Ear and hearingBilaterally implanted cochlear implant users improved front-back localization when allowed to turn their heads. In the lab, head movement raised correct responses from 49.4% to 81.7% and reduced front-back reversals from 41.9% to 6.7%.
- SLPOther2018Comparison of orbicularis oris muscle strength and endurance in young and elderly adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceOlder adults pressed their lips to 9.3 kPa on the pressure sensor and held for 13.3 seconds, compared with 15.5 kPa and 38.5 seconds in young adults. Reduced lip closure may matter for swallowing, but the study measured healthy people.
- PTOTOther2018Barriers, Facilitators and Interventions to Support Virtual Reality Implementation in Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationTherapists faced many barriers to VR use, including fit, skills, space, time and support. Some evaluated support packages improved knowledge and confidence, but use did not clearly increase.
- PTSurvey2018Questionnaire results of user experiences with wearable exoskeletons and their preferences for sensory feedback.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationFive of 10 people with spinal cord injury who used a wearable exoskeleton preferred vibrotactile feedback, and step initiation and weight shift feedback were rated helpful by more than half. Seven preferred discrete feedback. These are user preferences, not tested effects.
- PTCase Report2018External focus training for reacquisition of knee function in a Down syndrome patient after surgery for recurrent patellar dislocation: a case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceFor a woman with Down syndrome and an IQ of 20, focusing attention on a ball rather than her knee helped her regain walking control after patellar surgery. Her walking distance increased from 100 meters to over 2 kilometers, and knee motion improved significantly.
- OTOther2019Variation in restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests relates to inhibitory control and shifting in children with autism spectrum disorder.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceChildren with autism who showed more restricted interests and rituals also had more trouble ignoring conflicting cues on a Stroop task and more parent-reported difficulty shifting. Both abilities were linked independently of age and IQ.
- PTCohort2019Pre-operative hamstring length and velocity do not explain the reduced effectiveness of repeat hamstring lengthening in children with cerebral palsy and crouch gait.Gait & posturePreoperative hamstring length and velocity did not differ between first and repeat hamstring lengthening. Both groups had short or slow hamstrings. Knee flexion improved in more limbs after first surgery than after repeat, but the preoperative muscle measures did not explain the difference.
- Other2019Inhibition, shifting and updating in relation to psychometric intelligence across ability groups in the psychiatric population.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRExecutive-function scores and IQ were related, but the expected stronger link in lower ability groups was not found. Shifting was related to IQ only in normal/high ability patients. In people with intellectual disability, scores may reflect processing speed rather than a specific executive deficit.
- SLPCohort2019Facial emotion recognition of older adults with traumatic brain injury.Brain injuryThirteen older adults with traumatic brain injury had the lowest emotion recognition scores, but only showed a clear difference from younger uninjured adults. TBI and older age were each linked to poorer recognition, especially for anger and sadness.
- Narrative Review2019A Cerebrovascular Hypothesis of Neurodegeneration in mTBI.The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationNo therapy change follows from this paper. It is a hypothesis review about possible cerebrovascular changes after mild traumatic brain injury.
- PTOTSystematic Review2019International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Domains of 60 Physical Functioning Measurement Instruments Used During the Adult Intensive Care Unit Stay: A Scoping Review.Physical therapyMost ICU physical function tools measure mobility. Sixty tools covered 26 ICF domains, but none captured all four ICF components. If you need a broad picture, expect to combine scales, scores, questionnaires, or biophysical tests.
- PTOTSLPCohort2019Associations of Participation-Focused Strategies and Rehabilitation Service Use With Caregiver Stress After Pediatric Critical Illness.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationAfter PICU discharge, caregivers whose children received PICU rehabilitation and reported home participation strategies had stress that declined over 6 months. Strategies alone were not shown to lower stress. This is not proof that rehabilitation caused the change.
- SLPOther2019Air-Conducted Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Testing in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults: Thresholds, Frequency Tuning, and Effects of Sound Exposure.Ear and hearing500 Hz and 750 Hz VEMP gave the same responses in 10 children, 10 adolescents, and 10 young adults; thresholds were lower in children than young adults, and testing did not change hearing, hair-cell function, or symptoms.
- OTCohort2019Group Differences Among Caregivers of Civilians and Service Members or Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationCaregivers of service members or veterans with TBI were more often younger spouses, cared for people injured longer ago, and reported more adjustment problems in the person with TBI and feeling trapped. These group differences do not show cause.
- PTCohort2019Reduced vestibular function is associated with longer, slower steps in healthy adults during normal speed walking.Gait & postureLower horizontal semicircular canal function was associated with longer stride, slower cadence, and longer stance time in healthy older adults walking at usual speed. Otolith organ tests showed no associations.
- PTOTCohort2019Weight loss changed gait kinematics in individuals with obesity and knee pain.Gait & postureWeight loss changed knee motion during walking, but the change was linked to weight loss, not pain relief. Patients lost an average of 10.4% of body weight. Greater weight loss predicted more kinematic change, yet pain reduction did not correlate with how the knee moved.
- PTOTSLPMeta-Analysis2019Goal-setting in geriatric rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.Clinical rehabilitationGoal-setting did not improve physical functioning, quality of life, or reduce rehabilitation duration in older adults compared to usual care. The evidence was low quality, and usual care often already included some form of goal-setting, making it hard to see a benefit from standardized methods.
- SLPOther2019Effects of Additional Low-Pass-Filtered Speech on Listening Effort for Noise-Band-Vocoded Speech in Quiet and in Noise.Ear and hearingAdding low-frequency acoustic speech to degraded speech sometimes made a secondary visual task faster, especially in quiet and at 50% intelligibility in noise. The effect was small and inconsistent. Self-reported effort did not improve. It is not yet evidence for clinical use.
- SLPOther2019Thinking Ahead: Incremental Language Processing is Associated with Receptive Language Abilities in Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersPreschoolers with autism who had stronger receptive language looked to the named picture earlier when a verb hinted what noun was coming. The link was twice as strong when the verb gave a clue than when it did not.
- SLPOther2019Modelling category goodness judgments in children with residual sound errors.Clinical linguistics & phoneticsChildren with residual sound errors judge the goodness of /r/ sounds just like typically developing peers. Both groups are less sensitive to acoustic cues than adults, accepting a wider range of errors. This suggests perception lags behind production in children.
- SLPOther2019A "Goldilocks" Approach to Hearing Aid Self-Fitting: Ear-Canal Output and Speech Intelligibility Index.Ear and hearingA generic starting setting for hearing aids provided adequate speech audibility for 65% of users. Self-adjustment increased this to 88%, matching the accuracy of a customized clinical prescription. Users without prior experience achieved similar results to experienced users.
- SLPOther2019Effects of Amplification and Hearing Aid Experience on the Contribution of Specific Frequency Bands to Loudness.Ear and hearingAmplification shifted loudness judgments toward high-frequency bands, but did not make them match normal hearing. Hearing aid experience did not change the pattern.
- SLPCohort2019Parental criticism and behavior problems in children with autism spectrum disorder.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceParental criticism linked to behavior problems in children with autism, but the effect depended on context. Criticism predicted internalizing issues only when parental warmth was moderate, not high. It predicted externalizing issues only in children with moderate or high physiological stress reactivity.
- PTOther2018Biomechanics of single-leg running using lofstrand crutches in amputee soccer.Journal of physical therapy scienceFaster single-leg crutch running was linked to more forward pelvic tilt and shorter crutch stance time. Six experienced participants simulating amputation ran faster than six beginners, but this small study does not prove training effects.
- OTRCT2018Generalizing remotely supervised transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS): feasibility and benefit in Parkinson's disease.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationTen home tDCS sessions paired with cognitive training were feasible in 16 people with Parkinson's disease. Fatigue, sleep, visual learning and reaction time scores did not show a clear change; negative affect scores decreased, but this was a small pilot.
- PTOther2018Changes in kinematic chain dynamics between calcaneal pronation/supination and shank rotation during load bearing associated with ankle position during plantar and dorsiflexion.Journal of physical therapy scienceAnkle position changed the coupling between foot pronation/supination and shank rotation. The coupling was lowest in plantar flexion and highest in dorsiflexion. Age did not change it.
- SLPOther2018How repetition influences speech understanding by younger, middle-aged and older adults.International journal of audiologyRepeating a sentence helped adults understand it better in noisy speech, with gains of about 9 to 29 percentage points in words understood. Repeating only the message, not the background talker, helped most, especially older listeners.
- PTPilot2018Predictors of mobility domain of health-related quality of life after rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease: a pilot study.Archives of physiotherapyAfter 20 rehab sessions, mobility-related PDQ-39 scores changed by -6.2 points. The paper reports this as improvement. Baseline mobility score, disease stage and gender predicted post-rehabilitation change.
- SLPOther2018Sex differences in social attention in autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchSchool-aged girls with autism looked at faces more than boys with autism when trains and other objects were shown. Reduced looking at faces in autism may describe boys more than girls.
- PTOTRCT2018Evaluation of the Keeogo exoskeleton for assisting ambulatory activities in people with multiple sclerosis: an open-label, randomized, cross-over trial.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationPeople with multiple sclerosis walked and climbed stairs slower while wearing the Keeogo exoskeleton compared to not wearing it. However, using the device at home for two weeks improved their unassisted walking and stair performance, suggesting a conditioning benefit rather than immediate assistance.
- SLPOther2019The Emotional Communication in Hearing Questionnaire (EMO-CHeQ): Development and Evaluation.Ear and hearingPeople with hearing loss reported more trouble understanding emotion in voices than people with normal hearing, and hearing aid users reported similar trouble to those not using aids. The EMO-CHeQ captures this voice-emotion handicap.
