- SLPQualitative2018Information, Advocacy and Signposting as a Low-Level Support for Adults with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Example from the UK.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with high-functioning autism described feeling less isolated and more able to manage daily life through free drop-in hubs, mentoring, information, signposting and advocacy. The paper reports perceptions, not tested outcomes.
- SLPOther2018Contralateral Interference Caused by Binaurally Presented Competing Speech in Adult Bilateral Cochlear-Implant Users.Ear and hearingIn nine adults with bilateral cochlear implants who had early deafness or asymmetric hearing histories, adding a competing talker to the other ear made speech understanding worse, not better. Test both ears together in noise before assuming benefit.
- SLPOther2018LVC Timing in Infant Pig Swallowing and the Effect of Safe Swallowing.DysphagiaIn infant pigs, unsafe swallows consistently showed delayed laryngeal vestibule closure and altered tongue and hyoid timing compared to safe swallows. However, nerve damage itself did not change these closure timings, suggesting the mechanism for post-surgical aspiration remains unclear.
- Cohort2018Racial Disparities in Outpatient Mental Health Service Use Among Children Hospitalized for Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationAfter discharge for pediatric TBI, racial minority Medicaid children were less likely to use outpatient mental health services than NHW children. Inpatient use did not differ, so the gap appears after hospitalization.
- Other2018Comparing the effects of age, pubertal development, and symptom profile on cortisol rhythm in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAcross the day, salivary cortisol did not differ overall between autism and typically developing groups, but evening cortisol was higher in autism and adolescents with autism had a flatter decline.
- SLPRCT2018Transitioning Together: A Multi-family Group Psychoeducation Program for Adolescents with ASD and Their Parents.Journal of autism and developmental disordersCompared with waitlist, parents in the group had fewer depressive symptoms and better problem-solving, and their teens had more social interactions; general life stress, relationship quality, warmth, criticism and autism symptoms did not improve more than waitlist.
- SLPSystematic Review2018Same or Different: The Overlap Between Children With Auditory Processing Disorders and Children With Other Developmental Disorders: A Systematic Review.Ear and hearingChildren with APD or suspected APD and children with language, reading, attention, or learning disorders performed similarly on 85 of 102 tests. Current tests may flag listening difficulty but do not reliably separate diagnoses.
- OTOther2018Disrupted integration of exteroceptive and interoceptive signaling in autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchPeople with autism judged their own heartbeat and a visual event as simultaneous over a time window over 4 times larger than controls. They could still count their heartbeats, and heartbeat awareness was strongly related to heartbeat-vision timing.
- SLPPilot2018Spatial Characteristics of Jaw Movements During Chewing in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study.DysphagiaChildren with cerebral palsy and no reported feeding problems used larger jaw movements when chewing, especially for mechanical soft and solid foods. Chewing speed was not clearly different between groups.
- PTCohort2018Cognitive and physical development in HIV-positive children in South Africa and Malawi: A community-based follow-up comparison study.Child: care, health and developmentHIV-positive children in South Africa and Malawi showed lower growth, school, physical, cognitive and quality-of-life scores than HIV-negative children. Their improvement over follow-up was mostly similar, except physical functioning improved more.
- SLPOther2018Third person singular -s in typical development and specific language impairment: Input and neighbourhood density.Clinical linguistics & phoneticsChildren with SLI used third person singular -s less often than peers, but verbs that appeared more often with -s in child-directed speech were more likely to be inflected in both groups. For children with SLI, sparse verbs were associated with more inflection.
- SLPOther2018Evaluation of the NAL Dynamic Conversations Test in older listeners with hearing loss.International journal of audiologyOlder listeners with poorer cognitive abilities did worse on a conversational comprehension test than on a sentence test. Hearing aid benefit also changed with noise level.
- Other2018Genetic background effects in Neuroligin-3 mutant mice: Minimal behavioral abnormalities on C57 background.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchMice carrying the NL3R451C mutation on a C57 background showed no social deficit or enhanced spatial learning versus wild-type mice. They moved more and startled less to loud tones.
- OTCohort2018Medication use by adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRMost adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome took psychotropic medication, and use stayed stable over three years. Higher autism symptoms, behaviour problems, mental health diagnoses and family income were associated with greater psychotropic medication use.
- PTOther2017Influence of the ultrasound transducer tilt on muscle thickness and echo intensity of the rectus femoris muscle of healthy subjects.Journal of physical therapy scienceUltrasound probe tilt by 6 or 9 degrees did not detect a change in muscle thickness, but did change echo intensity in 14 healthy young men. Keep probe angle consistent when comparing echo intensity.
- Other2017SoftHand at the CYBATHLON: a user's experience.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA single pilot with an arm amputation competed in a robotics race using a new soft prosthetic hand. He completed all tasks, placing fifth overall. The device required less shoulder force than his usual body-powered hook, though he found it heavy and tiring.
- PTOTCohort2017Relationship between psychophysiological factors and prognosis for activities of daily living in patients with stroke in a recovery rehabilitation unit: a preliminary study.Journal of physical therapy scienceAt admission, worse motor paralysis and higher depression scores were associated with poorer daily living function 2 months later in 13 stroke patients in a rehabilitation unit. This does not show that treating these problems improves daily living.
- PTOther2017Physical performance of elderly adults in association with thigh tissue composition: a cross-sectional study.Journal of physical therapy scienceHealthy adults aged 65 to 80 who had larger thigh muscle area and less fat inside the thigh muscle also had faster overall timed performance. This was an association, not proof that changing tissue improves performance.
- PTOTRCT2017Effect of EMG-triggered neuromuscular electrical stimulation with bilateral arm training on hemiplegic shoulder pain and arm function after stroke: a randomized controlled trial.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationPain at rest did not differ between groups, but EMG-triggered NMES plus bilateral arm training reduced pain during shoulder movement and worst pain more than TENS plus the same training, with benefit still seen at follow-up.
- PTOTRCT2017Effect of aquatic versus land based exercise programs on physical performance in severely burned patients: a randomized controlled trial.Journal of physical therapy scienceAquatic exercise improved physical performance and oxygen uptake more than land-based exercise in men with severe burns. Both groups improved, but the water group showed significantly greater gains in strength, endurance, and walking speed after 12 weeks.
- PTPilot2017Manual physical balance assistance of therapists during gait training of stroke survivors: characteristics and predicting the timing.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn four patients not used to build it, a lower-back sensor algorithm caught 81% of therapist balance assistance events, and 87% of its alerts were real. It missed shoulder corrections. This is a small engineering step, not evidence that therapy changes.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Clinical phenotype of ASD-associated DYRK1A haploinsufficiency.Molecular autismDYRK1A disruptions were associated with microcephaly, speech delay, intellectual impairment, motor and feeding problems, vision abnormalities, and ASD features. This pattern can guide assessment of speech, motor, feeding, vision, and adaptive needs.
- PTRCT2017Gait performance and foot pressure distribution during wearable robot-assisted gait in elderly adults.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn 30 healthy older adults, a hip-assist robot increased walking speed, cadence and stride length, lowered some leg-muscle effort, and raised foot pressure during a short walk. This shows immediate mechanical effects, not long-term rehabilitation benefit.
- PTOTOther2017The effect of fluidotherapy on hand dexterity and activities of daily living in patients with edema on stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceThree weeks of fluidotherapy significantly reduced hand edema in stroke patients and improved daily living independence, but did not significantly improve hand dexterity. The study had no control group, so natural recovery cannot be ruled out.
- SLPCohort2017Inferential language use by youth with Down syndrome during narration.Research in developmental disabilitiesYouth with Down syndrome used less inferential language in storytelling than peers with fragile X syndrome, even after accounting for sentence length. The gap with typically developing children disappeared once sentence length was considered, suggesting structural language limits their narrative complexity.
- SLPOther2018Maturation Modulates Pharyngeal-Stimulus Provoked Pharyngeal and Respiratory Rhythms in Human Infants.DysphagiaPharyngeal reflexes in preterm infants changed with age and water volume. As they matured toward full oral feeds, swallowing sequences had fewer peaks and shorter breathing pauses. Larger volumes produced more responses and peaks, without changing breathing rhythms.
- SLPCohort2018Grading Dysphagia as a Toxicity of Head and Neck Cancer: Differences in Severity Classification Based on MBS DIGEST and Clinical CTCAE Grades.DysphagiaClinical symptom ratings often mismatch swallowing scans. Early after treatment, feeding tubes may reflect other side effects rather than true pharyngeal dysphagia. Later on, patients can eat normally despite severe silent dysfunction. Relying on one method alone misses the full picture of swallowing safety.
- SLPCase-Control2018Discrimination of Voice Pitch and Vocal-Tract Length in Cochlear Implant Users.Ear and hearingCochlear implant users need voice differences far larger than normal hearing listeners to tell speakers apart. While pitch changes are still detectable, vocal tract length differences are not, meaning implants fail to convey the subtle cues used to identify who is speaking.
- SLPPilot2018A Pilot Study of Perceived Mouth Dryness, Perceived Swallowing Effort, and Saliva Substitute Effects in Healthy Adults Across the Age Range.DysphagiaHealthy adults who rated their mouth drier rated swallowing effort higher. After Biotene gel, the middle effort rating dropped from 10 to 5 on the 10-centimeter line. Older age was linked to dryness, not effort.
- OTSurvey2018Caregiver Burden Varies by Sensory Subtypes and Sensory Dimension Scores of Children with Autism.Journal of autism and developmental disordersCaregiver health-related quality of life was not associated with child sensory subtype or sensory profile measures. Caregiver strain was higher for children in the generalized sensory difference subtype or with greater multisensory integration difficulties than for children in adaptive or taste/smell sensitive subtypes.
- SLPOther2018Speech Perception in Noise and Listening Effort of Older Adults With Nonlinear Frequency Compression Hearing Aids.Ear and hearingOlder adults with hearing loss recognized sentence endings better when non-linear frequency compression was enabled. Recall was also higher. Benefit varied: 9 of 17 improved recognition, and younger participants showed more recall benefit.
- SLPOther2018Factors associated with vocal fry among college students.Logopedics, phoniatrics, vocologyThe proportion of students judged to use vocal fry did not differ across the nine acoustic conditions. Sporadic caffeine use and background noise were associated with lower likelihood. The study is small and not causal.
- OTSLPPilot2018Development of the Supported Employment, Comprehensive Cognitive Enhancement, and Social Skills program for adults on the autism spectrum: Results of initial study.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceEight adults with autism completed a 6-month cognitive and social skills program inside a vocational training setting. Participants reported improved executive functioning and social skills, and self-reported employment rose from 22% to 56%, though this was a small open trial with no control group.
- SLPOther2018The Impact of Glottal Configuration on Speech Breathing.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationWhen twelve healthy adults produced a voice similar to a breathy voice, they used larger speech breaths than in their typical voice, started at higher lung volumes, ended lower, and took more breaths.
- PTRCT2018Effectiveness of aquatic versus land physiotherapy in the treatment of peripheral neuropathies: a randomized controlled trial.Clinical rehabilitationPatients with peripheral neuropathy all received daily physiotherapy, equipment training and occupational therapy. Replacing three weekly land balance and gait sessions with water sessions did not improve static balance more, improved walking quality more, and had smaller gains in walking independence and hip flexor strength.
- SLPOther2018Shank3-deficient rats exhibit degraded cortical responses to sound.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchShank3 heterozygous rats had weaker cortical responses to tones, rapid noise bursts, and speech onsets. The first response to speech sounds was slower overall. Ability to tell isolated speech sounds apart was unchanged. No therapy was tested.
- SLPRCT2018Efficacy of technology-based interventions to increase the use of hearing protections among adolescent farmworkers.International journal of audiologyComputer training and classroom plus app training did not show significantly larger gains than classroom training, although all three groups improved hearing-protection knowledge, attitude and self-reported use over six weeks.
- SLPCohort2018Correlations Between Patient-Reported Dysphagia Screening and Penetration-Aspiration Scores in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Post-oncological Treatment.DysphagiaHead and neck cancer survivors who reported trouble eating, swallowing and coughing often had severe swallowing findings, but patient reports and test scores were only weakly related overall. Trouble drinking was less commonly reported.
- OTCohort2017Early Behavioral Risks of Childhood and Adolescent Daytime Urinary Incontinence and Nocturnal Enuresis.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPEarly difficult temperament and childhood behavior problems were linked to later bedwetting and daytime wetting, but not consistently across ages or outcomes.
- OTOther2017Assessing the adjustability of grasping force using the iWakka in elderly individuals.Journal of physical therapy scienceWhen older adults repeated the same grasping force task on the iWakka, their first and second scores shifted by a consistent small amount, but the error did not grow with larger targets.
- PTOther2017Changes in gluteal pressure and center of force during sitting in children with cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceChildren with cerebral palsy had higher peak gluteal pressure and a more posterior center of force while sitting than typically developing peers. Check seating pressure relief, but this small study did not test interventions.
- PTOTOther2017Mapping upper-limb motor performance after stroke - a novel method with utility for individualized motor training.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA robot-based reaching map identified individual upper-limb impairment patterns after chronic stroke and was used to select training movements. In two adults, no controlled outcome tested whether this improves function.
- PTRCT2017The immediate effect of FES and TENS on gait parameters in patients after stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceNo gait parameter changed more with FES added to exercise than with TENS added to exercise. In the FES group only, cadence and speed rose after the 30-minute session; TENS did not show a change in either measure.
- PTSystematic Review2017Cognitive behavioural therapy and pain coping skills training for osteoarthritis knee pain management: a systematic review.Journal of physical therapy scienceFor adults with knee osteoarthritis, CBT or PCST alone did not reduce pain more than the comparison groups. Some programmes combining PCST with behavioural weight management or exercise reported greater pain reduction, but the effect of any single part cannot be separated.
- PTSystematic Review2017Robotic assisted gait as a tool for rehabilitation of individuals with spinal cord injury: a systematic review.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationRobotic gait training for spinal cord injury was described as helping walking, cardiorespiratory, sensory and functional outcomes, but this review did not compare devices or show that a device causes a specific outcome.
- PTMeta-Analysis2017Normative reference values for the two-minute walk test derived by meta-analysis.Journal of physical therapy scienceTypical two-minute walk distances in healthy adults ranged from 150.3 meters for women aged 70 to 79 years to 217.9 meters for men aged 20 to 29 years.
- SLPOther2017Early social communication in infants with fragile X syndrome and infant siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder.Research in developmental disabilitiesInfants with fragile X syndrome used less complex social communication than siblings of children with autism. Their communication was also lower than typically developing infants, but the difference was not clear. They communicated more during peek-a-boo than during other play tasks.
- PTOTOther2017A multisession evaluation of an adaptive competitive arm rehabilitation game.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationFor people with arm impairment playing a competitive arm game at home with a friend or relative, competition felt more enjoyable and produced more arm movement than playing alone. At a clinic, competing against another patient showed no such advantage.
- OTOther2017Cognition among community-dwelling individuals with spinal cord injury.Rehabilitation psychologyCommunity-dwelling adults with spinal cord injury scored lower than matched controls on fluid cognition, especially speed and executive tasks. Crystallized cognition was similar.
- PTPilot2017Treatment of Low Back Pain with a Digital Multidisciplinary Pain Treatment App: Short-Term Results.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesPeople using an app combining education, physiotherapy and mindfulness for low back pain reported lower pain at last use than baseline. Without a control group and with high dropout, this cannot prove the app caused improvement.
