- PTOther2017Anti-gravity treadmill can promote aerobic exercise for lower limb osteoarthritis patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceAnti-gravity treadmill walking did not change oxygen uptake compared with level-ground walking, but 20 patients with lower limb osteoarthritis walked faster with less pain during a short test.
- OTOther2017Translational Research for Occupational Therapy: Using SPRE in Hippotherapy for Children with Developmental Disabilities.Occupational therapy internationalIn children receiving hippotherapy, HEAT scores changed in three of four domains, except static posture. A single-subject method flagged two of five children with negative static-posture predictions. Total scores can hide domain-specific problems.
- SLPNarrative Review2017Designing Clinical Trials for Assessing the Effectiveness of Interventions for Tinnitus.Trends in hearingTinnitus trials use many different outcome measures, and many did not clearly state what was measured. This review proposes standard outcome reporting so trials can be compared; it does not test a treatment.
- PTRCT2017Effects of high-intensity pulse irradiation with linear polarized near-infrared rays and stretching on muscle tone in patients with cerebrovascular disease: a randomized controlled trial.Journal of physical therapy scienceFive minutes of stretching improved ankle dorsiflexion by 5.3° and reduced resistance to passive stretch by 1.96 Nm. Adding high-intensity near-infrared light gave no further benefit.
- Other2017Prenatal exposure to valproic acid increases miR-132 levels in the mouse embryonic brain.Molecular autismPrenatal valproic acid raised mouse embryonic brain miR-132 at E12.5, not E14.5, and reduced MeCP2 and p250GAP. This is an animal molecular finding, not evidence for human autism or therapy.
- SLPSystematic Review2017Bio-collections in autism research.Molecular autismLarge autism research collections have supported genetic studies of autism, including studies of language and communication differences. They are research resources, not clinical tests or treatments.
- PTOTPilot2017A therapist-focused knowledge translation intervention for improving patient adherence in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice.Archives of physiotherapyAfter a 1-hour workshop, 35 physiotherapists reported higher confidence in identifying adherence risks, assessing barriers, measuring adherence and implementing strategies. It did not show that patients adhered better or had improved outcomes.
- PTNarrative Review2017Direct access to physical therapy for the patient with musculoskeletal disorders, a literature review.Journal of physical therapy scienceSelf-referring to physical therapy for musculoskeletal disorders was reported to help patients reach goals, reduce missed work, and lower costs, and to be as safe as physician referral, but this review was not systematic and cannot confirm it.
- PTCase Report2017Non-surgical relief of cervical radiculopathy through reduction of forward head posture and restoration of cervical lordosis: a case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceA 31-year-old male with right cervical radiculopathy reported complete alleviation of upper arm weakness and neck pain after 40 sessions over 17 weeks of extension exercises, extension traction, spinal manipulation, paraspinal stimulation, and home traction.
- PTOTOther2017The feasibility of using pedometers for self-report of steps and accelerometers for measuring physical activity in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across an 18-month intervention.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRAdults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities recorded steps on 81.5% of days, but only 40.9% of those step counts were within believable ranges. Only 26.8% met the usual 4-day/10-hour accelerometer rule. These tools gave limited usable physical activity data.
- PTCase Report2017Treating 'slouchy' (hyperkyphosis) posture with chiropractic biophysics®: a case report utilizing a multimodal mirror image® rehabilitation program.Journal of physical therapy scienceA 27-year-old woman with painful hyperkyphosis reported less pain and disability and had a smaller thoracic curve after 30 combined treatments: mirror image exercises, drop-table adjustments, traction, manipulation, heel lift, psoas work, ice and home care. One case cannot separate components.
- OTRCT2017Massage and Storytelling Reduce Aggression and Improve Academic Performance in Children Attending Elementary School.Occupational therapy internationalChildren in weekly massage classes plus daily paired massage, and children in weekly storytelling classes plus daily paired retelling, had fewer teacher-recorded aggressive episodes and higher mean grades than control children in an extra class plus daily paired recall in one public school.
- PTNarrative Review2017Robot-supported assessment of balance in standing and walking.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationRobotic balance assessment can add repeatable perturbations during standing and walking and support patients who cannot perform tests alone. The paper presents it as a possible assessment aid, not as evidence that it works.
- PTOther2017Factors affecting dyspnea after the 6-minute walk test in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients presenting with exercise-induced hypoxemia.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn a small group of people with pulmonary fibrosis whose oxygen fell after walking, smaller vital capacity and more leg fatigue went with more breathlessness. Ask about leg tiredness after walking.
- OTOther2017Test-Retest Reliability of a Measure of Independence in Everyday Activities: The ADL Profile.Occupational therapy internationalThe ADL Profile produced stable scores when the same therapist retested 20 people with severe TBI. Three community tasks were less stable, so a better score on those tasks may not mean change.
- SLPOther2017The Effects of Musical Training on Speech Detection in the Presence of Informational and Energetic Masking.Trends in hearingMusicians detected target words better than nonmusicians when target and two talkers came from the same spot. They showed no clear advantage when pitch cues were removed or when sound came from separate speakers. Training length did not predict performance.
- PTCohort2017Factors influencing outcomes after medial hamstring lengthening with semitendinosus transfer in patients with cerebral palsy.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationKnee flexion and overall gait improved after multilevel surgery that included hamstring lengthening and transfer plus other procedures in ambulatory patients with CP. Pelvic tilt stayed about the same. The contribution of the hamstring procedure alone cannot be separated.
- Survey2017Substance Use Among Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Reasons for Use, Knowledge of Risks, and Provider Messaging/Education.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPMost adolescents with ADHD did not know alcohol could worsen symptoms or interfere with medication, and few received ADHD-specific alcohol messages from providers. Screening was common, but tailored risk education was not.
- OTCase Series2017Parent Training Occupational Therapy Program for Parents of Children with Autism in Korea.Occupational therapy internationalIn four Korean families, parents reported changes of more than 2-point gains on 10-point performance and satisfaction scores after five months of occupational therapy plus parent training. Parents also felt stigmatized and wanted therapist direction.
- OTPilot2017Fatigue and Activity Management Education for Individuals with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.Occupational therapy internationalFatigue severity did not change after a six-week lupus fatigue programme, though participants reported using pacing, rest breaks, and delegation. Depression scores fell from baseline to eight weeks. This was a small uncontrolled pilot.
- OTRCT2017Robotic Assistance for Training Finger Movement Using a Hebbian Model: A Randomized Controlled Trial.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairHigh robotic assistance did not improve the primary hand function outcome more than low assistance, but both groups improved. Higher assistance was more motivating and was linked to more benefit for more severely impaired patients with intact proprioception.
- SLPOther2017Loud Music Exposure and Cochlear Synaptopathy in Young Adults: Isolated Auditory Brainstem Response Effects but No Perceptual Consequences.Trends in hearingYoung adults with frequent loud-music exposure had normal hearing and no group differences on speech, temporal, or spectral tests. A brainstem measure differed. This does not show that loud music causes perceptual hearing loss.
- SLPOther2017Listening Into 2030 Workshop: An Experiment in Envisioning the Future of Hearing and Communication Science.Trends in hearingNo clinical finding is available. The paper reports workshop ideas about future hearing and communication, not patient outcomes or tested interventions.
- PTOther2017Gait characteristics and their discriminative power in geriatric patients with and without cognitive impairment.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationGait measures separated geriatric patients from healthy older adults, but did not reliably tell cognitively impaired and cognitively intact geriatric patients apart, even during a thinking task. Do not use walking alone to identify cognitive impairment in geriatric patients.
- PTOther2017Associations Between Maternal Mental Health and Well-being and Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Children.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPThe main links between mothers' mental health and children's measured activity did not hold up after the researchers accounted for testing many associations. In single-parent households, more parenting stress was linked to about ten fewer active minutes daily.
- PTOther2017Changes in tibialis anterior architecture affect the amplitude of surface electromyograms.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSurface EMG amplitude from tibialis anterior changed with ankle position even when nerve stimulation was held constant. For therapists, EMG amplitude shifts during movement may reflect muscle shape, not just activation.
- SLPRCT2017Typical versus delayed speech onset influences verbal reporting of autistic interests.Molecular autismAutistic adults with delayed speech onset described interests using more perceptual words, while those with typical speech onset used more thematic words. The interests themselves and their reported functions were largely similar across groups.
- OTPilot2017Patient and Therapist Experiences of the SaeboFlex: A Pilot Study.Occupational therapy internationalPatients and occupational therapists described the SaeboFlex as helpful for upper-limb practice and motivation. They also reported barriers: fitting, needing help to put it on and take it off, too many repetitions, and cost. It was used with e-stim, wrist bracing, splinting, and/or casting.
- PTOther2017Hemodynamics and tissue oxygenation effects after increased in positive end-expiratory pressure in coronary artery bypass surgery.Archives of physiotherapyAfter coronary bypass, patients on mechanical ventilation with oxygen support had lung oxygen levels rise but central venous oxygen saturation fall and lactate rise when PEEP was increased. Blood pressure and central venous pressure did not change. The study had no control group.
- SLPQualitative2017Targeted areas for improving health literacy after traumatic brain injury.Brain injuryCaregivers of people hospitalized with traumatic brain injury reported confusion about the injury, care and discharge instructions, and feeling unprepared for caregiving. They wanted direct communication and clearer written instructions.
- OTRCT2017Effectiveness of Information Processing Strategy Training on Academic Task Performance in Children with Learning Disabilities: A Pilot Study.Occupational therapy internationalChildren with reading disabilities had posttest scores that differed between groups in Perceive, Plan, and Perform quadrants, not in overall Recall, after six weeks of PRPP strategy training, Four-Quadrant prompting, and usual therapy. Usual therapy alone did not show clear changes in most scores.
- SLPOther2017Identification of autism-related MECP2 mutations by whole-exome sequencing and functional validation.Molecular autismThree MECP2 mutations were found among 120 Chinese children with autism. When overexpressed in lab neurons, P152L and P376S did not alter dendrite growth, and P376S appeared to increase axon length. This is a genetic finding, not evidence for a therapy.
- PTOther2017Mobile App to Streamline the Development of Wearable Sensor-Based Exercise Biofeedback Systems: System Development and Evaluation.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesA tablet app built personalized exercise feedback systems using a sensor on the thigh for healthy people. Accuracy was highest for single-leg squats and lowest for lunges. It is not yet evidence for patient rehabilitation.
- PTOTQualitative2017Developing the content of a locomotor disability scale for adults in Bangladesh: a qualitative study.Archives of physiotherapyInterviews with adults with mobility impairments in Bangladesh produced a 70-item locomotor disability scale covering mobility, self-care, work and leisure. It adds local activities and definitions to reduce misinterpretation.
- OTRCT2017Interrelationship between insistence on sameness, effortful control and anxiety in adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Molecular autismAmong 71 adolescents and young adults with autism, rigid sameness behaviours, lower self-control and anxiety moved together. Each link was partly explained by the third. This does not show that treating one will change the others.
- PTOther2017Content validity and test-retest reliability of a low back pain questionnaire in Zimbabwean adolescents.Archives of physiotherapyA Zimbabwean adolescent low back pain questionnaire was judged relevant by experts, but answers about sciatica and functional limitation were inconsistent between assessments. Use it to screen pain and factors, not to score function.
- OTOther2017Weight-supported training of the upper extremity in children with cerebral palsy: a motor learning study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationWeight-supported game play plus usual rehabilitation improved game scores and blocks moved per minute in children with CP over three days. Movement-quality tests did not show a clear improvement, and the weight-supported game plus usual therapies cannot be separated.
- OTCase Report2017Surface EMG signals in very late-stage of Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a case study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn one man with very late-stage Duchenne muscular dystrophy, muscle electrical signals from biceps and triceps were still measurable and could be used in a computer simulation to command elbow flexion and extension. This is a single-case report, not evidence that a device works.
- PTCase Report2017Effect of a combined thoracic and backward lifting exercise on the thoracic kyphosis angle and intercostal muscle pain.Journal of physical therapy scienceIntercostal pain score fell from 4/10 to 1/10 and thoracic kyphosis angle fell from 38° to 32° after 15 days of daily thoracic extension with backward lifting in one man. This is a single case, not proof the exercise works.
- SLPOther2017Effectiveness of Two-Talker Maskers That Differ in Talker Congruity and Perceptual Similarity to the Target Speech.Trends in hearingListening to English sentences was hardest when one background talker also spoke English. Adding a Dutch or reversed-English talker helped little. Recognition improved much more when both background talkers were unlike the target.
- PTCase Report2017Depicting individual responses to physical therapist led chronic pain self-management support with pain science education and exercise in primary health care: multiple case studies.Archives of physiotherapyIn six people with chronic pain, function responses to a physiotherapist-led program combining pain science education, cognitive-behavioural principles and individualized exercise varied. Some improved function, some did not change, some declined. The contribution of any component is unknown. These cases cannot show it works.
- SLPNarrative Review2017Use of Research Interfaces for Psychophysical Studies With Cochlear-Implant Users.Trends in hearingThis is a safety and methods guide for researchers using cochlear-implant research interfaces. It does not test a treatment or report patient outcomes, so it cannot change what therapists do with patients.
- SLPOther2017Encoding a Melody Using Only Temporal Information for Cochlear-Implant and Normal-Hearing Listeners.Trends in hearingAmong nine cochlear-implant users, a familiar song was not reliably judged as more or less out of tune when its melody was carried only by the rate of loudness fluctuations in electrical stimulation. Ten normal-hearing listeners also struggled. Pure tones worked.
- SLPOther2017Word Recognition and Learning: Effects of Hearing Loss and Amplification Feature.Trends in hearingChildren with hearing loss gained benefit from wideband amplification on word recognition, real and nonsense word tasks, and word learning. Adults gained only on word learning. Digital noise reduction did not add benefit, and it did not worsen performance.
- Case-Control2017Globally weaker and topologically different: resting-state connectivity in youth with autism.Molecular autismYouth with autism had weaker overall brain connection strength than controls, and weaker global strength tracked with higher autism symptom scores. Some attention-related networks were more internally connected, while links between some networks were weaker.
- OTOther2017The Psychometric Properties of the Arabic Preschool Activity Card Sort.Occupational therapy internationalThe Arabic Preschool Activity Card Sort gave stable scores over 2 weeks and described preschool participation across several daily domains. Its links to adaptive behavior were mostly modest. Use it to ask what children do, not to prove skill.
- SLPRCT2017Balanced bifrontal transcranial direct current stimulation enhances working memory in adults with high-functioning autism: a sham-controlled crossover study.Molecular autismOverall working memory improved in 12 adults with high-functioning autism after 40-minute balanced bifrontal tDCS versus sham. Both left and right anodal montages helped. This was a pilot, so do not change practice.
- PTRCT2017Effectiveness of three modes of kinetic-chain exercises on quadriceps muscle strength and thigh girth among individuals with knee osteoarthritis.Archives of physiotherapyThe three knee-exercise modes did not differ in strength or thigh girth gains, with all participants also taking daily 3000 mg Paracetamol. All modes increased strength and girth over 12 weeks.
- OTSLPRCT2017The Effectiveness of a Vocational Enablement Protocol for Employees With Hearing Difficulties: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.Trends in hearingThe vocational enablement package did not reduce employees' need for recovery compared with usual care after 12 months. Self-acceptance improved by 0.24 points on a 1 to 5 scale, a small change; distress and self-efficacy did not differ.
- SLPCohort2017Role of Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials in Reducing the Age at Hearing Aid Fitting in Children With Hearing Loss Identified by Newborn Hearing Screening.Trends in hearingMedian age at hearing-aid fitting was lower after speech-sound brain response testing was added to the hearing pathway: 5 months versus 19 months in mild-to-moderate loss, and 3.9 versus 9.2 months overall. The study did not report speech or language outcomes.
