SLP Other 2017 Effects of Simulated Hearing Loss on Bilingual Children's Consonant Recognition in Noise. Ear and hearing No clear difference between English-dominant Spanish-English bilingual children and monolingual peers in English consonant recognition in quiet and noise. Simulated mild-to-moderate hearing loss lowered recognition similarly for both groups, and age affected bilingual children more. SLP Case-Control 2018 Working memory in school-age children with and without a persistent speech sound disorder. International journal of speech-language pathology Children with persistent speech sound disorders repeated made-up words less accurately than peers, and lower nonverbal intelligence scores were linked to this difference. Visual-spatial and inhibition task performance did not differ. SLP Narrative Review 2017 Multisensory Integration in Cochlear Implant Recipients. Ear and hearing Cochlear implant users often understand speech better when they can see and hear it, especially words and phonemes. Gains vary with age at implantation, experience, and task; emotion and pitch benefits are less reliable. SLP Other 2018 Supra-Segmental Changes in Speech Production as a Result of Spectral Feedback Degradation: Comparison with Lombard Speech. Language and speech Normal-hearing speakers slowed down, raised pitch and loudness, then became quieter and lower-pitched when hearing simulated cochlear implant feedback. Listeners preferred their baseline speech and recognized feedback-altered speech more slowly. SLP Other 2018 Visual speech fills in both discrimination and identification of non-intact auditory speech in children. Journal of child language Seeing the talker's mouth helped children fill in missing beginning sounds for easy-to-see /b/ items across ages four to fourteen, but not much for hard-to-see /g/ items. SLP Other 2018 Lay Listener Classification and Evaluation of Typical and Atypical Children's Speech. Language and speech Lay listeners rated children with autism as less likeable and more disordered based solely on short speech samples. This negative social evaluation was driven by perceived intelligibility issues, such as slow rate and unclear articulation, rather than by prosodic differences alone. SLP Other 2018 Third person singular -s in typical development and specific language impairment: Input and neighbourhood density. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Children with SLI used third person singular -s less often than peers, but verbs that appeared more often with -s in child-directed speech were more likely to be inflected in both groups. For children with SLI, sparse verbs were associated with more inflection. SLP Other 2018 Shank3-deficient rats exhibit degraded cortical responses to sound. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Shank3 heterozygous rats had weaker cortical responses to tones, rapid noise bursts, and speech onsets. The first response to speech sounds was slower overall. Ability to tell isolated speech sounds apart was unchanged. No therapy was tested. SLP Case-Control 2018 Sequential processing deficit as a shared persisting biomarker in dyslexia and childhood apraxia of speech. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Adults with dyslexia and adults with probable childhood apraxia made more errors in the order of sounds and letters than controls on speech and reading tasks. The errors also tracked with multisyllabic motor speech difficulty. SLP Pilot 2018 Initial consonant deletion in bilingual Spanish-English-speaking children with speech sound disorders. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Bilingual children with speech sound disorders deleted initial consonants in Spanish (5.71%) and English (1.6%), while monolingual English peers did not. Errors clustered on complex sounds and multi-syllable words, suggesting language interaction rather than pure disorder. SLP Narrative Review 2017 Challenges and Opportunities in Reading Instruction for Children with Limited Speech. Seminars in speech and language SLP RCT 2018 Hearing aid fitting and developmental outcomes of children fit according to either the NAL or DSL prescription: fit-to-target, audibility, speech and language abilities. International journal of audiology Children fitted to either NAL or DSL hearing aid targets showed similar direct speech and language results. Parents rated everyday listening higher for DSL, especially in quiet, but the audibility advantage did not show up on measured speech and language tests. SLP Other 2017 Validating a Rapid, Automated Test of Spatial Release From Masking. American journal of audiology A headphone test of speech in noise gave repeatable thresholds in adults with hearing thresholds below 30 dB HL or 41 dB HL. More spatial separation improved performance, but this was not tested in patients. SLP Other 2017 Vocalic transitions as markers of speech acoustic changes with STN-DBS in Parkinson's Disease. Journal of communication disorders Turning STN-DBS on or off, with medication unchanged, did not show a group-level change in glide F2 slope, coarticulation pattern, or intelligibility. People with Parkinson's had shallower glide F2 slopes and lower intelligibility than controls, with mixed individual responses. SLP Other 2018 Relations Between Self-Reported Daily-Life Fatigue, Hearing Status, and Pupil Dilation During a Speech Perception in Noise Task. Ear and hearing Self-reported daily fatigue did not differ between adults with hearing loss and normal-hearing adults. More fatigue and poorer hearing were each linked to smaller pupil dilation during speech-in-noise. SLP Other 2018 Young children's family history of stuttering and their articulation, language and attentional abilities: An exploratory study. Journal of communication disorders Young children who stuttered and those who did not did not differ significantly in family history of stuttering. Among children who did not stutter, a positive family history of stuttering was associated with family history of ADHD and lower language scores within normal range. SLP Other 2018 Looking Behavior and Audiovisual Speech Understanding in Children With Normal Hearing and Children With Mild Bilateral or Unilateral Hearing Loss. Ear and hearing Children with mild bilateral or unilateral hearing loss followed spoken instructions less accurately than normal-hearing peers in noisy multi-talker videos, but looking at talkers did not explain performance and hearing loss did not make children look more at relevant talkers. SLP Other 2018 Spectral Coefficient Analyses of Word-Initial Stop Consonant Productions Suggest Similar Anticipatory Coarticulation for Stuttering and Nonstuttering Adults. Language and speech Fluent /t/ productions by adults who stutter and adults who do not showed the same vowel-related anticipatory coarticulation. The upcoming vowel changed the consonant’s burst similarly in both groups, but stuttering status did not distinguish them. SLP Other 2018 Modeling Sluggishness in Binaural Unmasking of Speech for Maskers With Time-Varying Interaural Phase Differences. Trends in hearing Normal-hearing listeners understood speech in noise best when the noise's left-right phase changed slowly, especially at 0.25 Hz. Their advantage shrank as phase changes sped up and plateaued above 4 Hz. SLP Other 2018 Speech Processing to Improve the Perception of Speech in Background Noise for Children With Auditory Processing Disorder and Typically Developing Peers. Trends in hearing Children understood more words when speech was processed with SSDRC than unprocessed. The gain was 29.1 percentage points in speech-shaped noise and 7.3 percentage points with a competing speaker, and children with APD still did worse in that competing speaker. SLP Cohort 2018 The effect of emotion on articulation rate in persistence and recovery of childhood stuttering. Journal of fluency disorders Children whose stuttering persisted slowed their speech after a negative video, while children who later recovered and nonstuttering children did not. For therapists, speech-rate change after negative emotion may be a marker to watch, not a tested treatment effect. SLP Other 2018 Effects of Binaural Spatialization in Wireless Microphone Systems for Hearing Aids on Normal-Hearing and Hearing-Impaired Listeners. Trends in hearing For hearing aid users with moderate or severe loss, adding spatial cues to a wireless microphone system improved speech understanding when the microphone signal was used alone; it failed to help normal-hearing or profound-loss users, and normal-hearing localization was worse in the tested setup. SLP Other 2018 An Analysis of Individual Differences in Recognizing Monosyllabic Words Under the Speech Intelligibility Index Framework. Trends in hearing Thirty listeners differed in how they used frequency bands to recognize monosyllabic words in noise. Similar patterns appeared for the word list and the high-context sentences. Some listener characteristics stayed similar. SLP RCT 2018 Comparison of Two Music Training Approaches on Music and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users. Trends in hearing Six weeks of music training in cochlear implant users showed no clear improvement in word or sentence understanding. Computer pitch/timbre training improved melodic contour identification, and group music therapy improved emotion identification. SLP Other 2018 Use of a Deep Recurrent Neural Network to Reduce Wind Noise: Effects on Judged Speech Intelligibility and Sound Quality. Trends in hearing Listeners preferred hearing aid recordings with wind noise reduced by a computer algorithm over unprocessed wind-noise recordings, but not consistently over simple high-pass filtering. Preferences were small and lab-based, not tested in real hearing aids. SLP Case Report 2018 Intervention for bilingual speech sound disorders: A case study of an isiXhosa-English-speaking child. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings After 16 sessions of minimal pairs therapy, with English instructions, isiXhosa targets and some simple isiXhosa instructions, a single child showed better accuracy in both languages. This is a single case, so it cannot show that the approach works for all bilingual children. SLP Cohort 2018 Growth and Decline in Language and Phonological Memory Over Two Years Among Adolescents With Down Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Over two years, adolescents with Down syndrome showed growth in receptive vocabulary, while grammar stayed stable. Younger participants also showed gains in expressive vocabulary and digit memory, but nonword repetition declined. SLP Other 2018 First-language raters' opinions when validating word recordings for a newly developed speech reception threshold test. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Expert native speakers identified four words in a new hearing test that were previously accepted by standard checks. Their feedback caught subtle pitch and clarity issues that technical measures missed, improving the test's accuracy for real patients. SLP Other 2018 Coherent Coding of Enhanced Interaural Cues Improves Sound Localization in Noise With Bilateral Cochlear Implants. Trends in hearing Enhancing interaural level differences improved sound localization in noise for bilateral cochlear implant users, but using a low-rate coding strategy to preserve timing cues significantly worsened speech understanding. SLP Cohort 2018 Behavioral Effects of Chronic Gray and White Matter Stroke Lesions in a Functionally Defined Connectome for Naming. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Naming ability after chronic left hemisphere stroke depends on the integrity of specific white matter tracts, not just the gray matter regions activated in healthy people. Damage to these connections predicts poor word retrieval, while gray matter lesion volume alone does not. SLP Cohort 2018 The relation between phonological and lexical development in French-speaking children. Clinical linguistics & phonetics French-speaking children with smaller vocabularies at age 2.5 rely heavily on words with many sound neighbours and simpler phonetic structures. They also have poorer non-word repetition and fewer consonants in their speech. These phonological factors explain 76% of the variance in vocabulary size. SLP Other 2018 Self-Adjusted Amplification Parameters Produce Large Between-Subject Variability and Preserve Speech Intelligibility. Trends in hearing Hearing aid users self-adjusted their devices to settings vastly different from clinical prescriptions, yet their speech understanding remained stable. This suggests clinicians should not assume standard gain targets are the only acceptable option for comfort or clarity. SLP Pilot 2018 Reading in Children With Fragile X Syndrome: Phonological Awareness and Feasibility of Intervention. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Phonological awareness was associated with word reading in adolescent males with FXS. In a small uncontrolled feasibility study, all used a web-based reading program, but gains were mixed and cannot show effectiveness. SLP Other 2018 Vibro-Tactile Enhancement of Speech Intelligibility in Multi-talker Noise for Simulated Cochlear Implant Listening. Trends in hearing Fingertip vibration carrying speech envelope and voicing cues improved keyword scores in simulated cochlear implant speech in multi-talker noise, especially after three days of brief training. It was tested in eight normal-hearing listeners, not actual cochlear implant users. SLP Other 2018 Effect of Hearing Aid Directionality and Remote Microphone on Speech Intelligibility in Complex Listening Situations. Trends in hearing Directional hearing aid microphones plus remote microphone were better than omnidirectional microphones plus remote microphone for lab speech understanding in complex tests in 15 experienced hearing aid users, especially when switching between near and far talkers. Performance was also better after remote microphone use. SLP Cohort 2018 White matter properties associated with pre-reading skills in 6-year-old children born preterm and at term. Developmental medicine and child neurology White matter tract measures of a left language pathway tracked phonological awareness in both preterm and term 6-year-olds. A right brain tract linked to language tracked language scores only in term children. Preterm children had lower language scores. SLP Other 2018 The Self-Assessed Békesy Procedure: Validation of a Method to Measure Intelligibility of Connected Discourse. Trends in hearing A self-rating adaptive test matched standard sentence thresholds for Matrix sentences, but not for context-rich LIST sentences. It also found stories were harder than sentences, especially with a competing talker. SLP Other 2018 Vowel Formant Dispersion Reflects Severity of Apraxia of Speech. Aphasiology After stroke, greater variability in vowel sounds and voiced stop timing during picture description went with more severe apraxia of speech, but acoustic measures alone were not accurate enough for diagnosis. SLP Other 2018 Effects of Slow- and Fast-Acting Compression on Hearing-Impaired Listeners' Consonant-Vowel Identification in Interrupted Noise. Trends in hearing Fast compression improved consonant recognition by 8% to 9% at 55 and 65 dB SPL in nine older hearing-impaired listeners, but not at 45 or 75 dB SPL. No clear harm appeared at higher levels. SLP Case-Control 2018 Speech Recognition in Noise by Children with and without Dyslexia: How is it Related to Reading? Research in developmental disabilities Flattened frequency speech did not explain hearing speech problems in children with dyslexia. They still recognized speech less accurately in noise and quiet than typical peers. Reading and listening in noise relied on different language skills. SLP Other 2018 Listening in Naturalistic Scenes: What Can Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Intersubject Correlation Analysis Tell Us About the Underlying Brain Activity? Trends in hearing Brain scans showed common activity in auditory and frontal regions across listeners, but did not track reported effort or intelligibility. Normally hearing listeners judged speech fully intelligible before it felt effortless, and competing speech raised effort after signal-to-noise ratio was controlled. SLP Other 2018 A "Buildup" of Speech Intelligibility in Listeners With Normal Hearing and Hearing Loss. Trends in hearing The improvement in identifying target digits was similar for normal-hearing adults and for hearing-loss adults who received individualized amplification. Listeners improved from the first to the second digit in a five-talker mixture, but hearing-loss listeners made more errors from competing talkers. SLP Other 2018 Turn an Ear to Hear: How Hearing-Impaired Listeners Can Exploit Head Orientation to Enhance Their Speech Intelligibility in Noisy Social Settings. Trends in hearing Cochlear implant users made fewer spontaneous head turns than young normal-hearing listeners, and no more than age-matched normal-hearing listeners. Telling them to explore head turns improved speech understanding, but clinic and web advice usually says face the talker head-on. SLP Other 2018 Emotional Responses to Pleasant Sounds Are Related to Social Disconnectedness and Loneliness Independent of Hearing Loss. Trends in hearing Hearing loss alone was not associated with social disconnectedness or loneliness. People who found pleasant sounds less pleasant reported more disconnectedness and loneliness. SLP Other 2018 Pupil Responses of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury During Processing of Speech in Noise. Trends in hearing Adults with brain injury but normal hearing scores understood speech in noise worse than age-matched normal-hearing adults. They reported more effort, but pupil measures did not show greater peak effort. Visual language scores were similar. SLP Other 2018 Spatial Release From Informational Masking: Evidence From Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy. Trends in hearing Separating target and masker speech did not change frontal oxygen responses overall, but right frontal responses were stronger in the separated condition. Actively listening to speech in a competing talker background raised frontal responses compared with passive listening. SLP Other 2018 Behavioral predictors of improved speech output in minimally verbal children with autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Minimally verbal children with autism who could imitate more speech sounds at baseline showed more improvement in speech after 25 therapy sessions. Singing plus drum-tapping improved more than speech repetition therapy. SLP Case-Control 2018 Use of a phoneme monitoring task to examine lexical access in adults who do and do not stutter. Journal of fluency disorders Adults who stutter showed no significant difficulty accessing verbs versus nouns. However, they made significantly more errors when monitoring for phonemes in the middle of words compared to the start. This suggests a specific weakness in processing word-internal sounds rather than general lexical retrieval. SLP Cohort 2018 Word Learning in Children With Cochlear Implants: Examining Performance Relative to Hearing Peers and Relations With Age at Implantation. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants matched hearing peers in understanding new words but struggled to say them correctly. Their speaking errors matched younger hearing children with similar vocabularies. Implant age did not predict word learning skills in this group. SLP Other 2018 Using Objective Metrics to Measure Hearing Aid Performance. Ear and hearing Aggressive wide dynamic-range compression, noise suppression, and frequency lowering in six hearing aids usually lowered lab scores for speech intelligibility and quality. A simple linear setting often scored highest. Clinical benefit for patients was not tested. ← Previous PAGE 2 OF 12 Next →
