SLP Other 2019 Effects of Additional Low-Pass-Filtered Speech on Listening Effort for Noise-Band-Vocoded Speech in Quiet and in Noise. Ear and hearing Adding low-frequency acoustic speech to degraded speech sometimes made a secondary visual task faster, especially in quiet and at 50% intelligibility in noise. The effect was small and inconsistent. Self-reported effort did not improve. It is not yet evidence for clinical use. SLP Other 2019 A "Goldilocks" Approach to Hearing Aid Self-Fitting: Ear-Canal Output and Speech Intelligibility Index. Ear and hearing A generic starting setting for hearing aids provided adequate speech audibility for 65% of users. Self-adjustment increased this to 88%, matching the accuracy of a customized clinical prescription. Users without prior experience achieved similar results to experienced users. SLP Other 2019 Perceptual Doping: An Audiovisual Facilitation Effect on Auditory Speech Processing, From Phonetic Feature Extraction to Sentence Identification in Noise. Ear and hearing Seeing and hearing Swedish speech made later listening-only speech tasks easier for adults with hearing loss. Seeing and hearing also improved sentence identification in noise. In the sentence task, listening-only exposure also helped later seeing and hearing. SLP Other 2019 Hearing in Real-Life Environments (HERE): Structure and Reliability of a Questionnaire on Perceived Hearing for Older Adults. Ear and hearing Scores from the HERE questionnaire were similar across Finnish and UK older adults, stable when repeated in the UK sample, and related to measured hearing and speech-in-noise performance. It may help clinicians ask about everyday hearing difficulty without specialist testing. SLP Other 2019 In a Concurrent Memory and Auditory Perception Task, the Pupil Dilation Response Is More Sensitive to Memory Load Than to Auditory Stimulus Characteristics. Ear and hearing When people memorize words while listening, pupil dilation stops tracking how hard the speech is to hear. It tracks memory load instead. Semantic cues help hearing but confuse recall, as people mix up the cue words with the sentence they just heard. SLP Cohort 2019 Tongue shapes for rhotics in school-age children with and without residual speech errors. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Children with residual speech errors produced rhotics with simpler tongue shapes than typical speakers. After seven hours of ultrasound biofeedback therapy, their tongue complexity increased and listeners rated their rhotics as more accurate. Complexity scores correlated with perceived accuracy. SLP Other 2019 Cognitive Abilities Contribute to Spectro-Temporal Discrimination in Children Who Are Hard of Hearing. Ear and hearing In 24 children with hearing aids, a test of distinguishing rippled sounds was tied to visual working memory and non-verbal intelligence, not aided audibility, verbal memory, or executive function. SLP Other 2019 The Effects of Dynamic-range Automatic Gain Control on Sentence Intelligibility With a Speech Masker in Simulated Cochlear Implant Listening. Ear and hearing Linked automatic gain control improved sentence intelligibility in noise in simulated bilateral cochlear implant listening. Multi-band processing helped when gain control was active but not when it was rarely active. Normal-hearing listeners were tested, not implant users. SLP Other 2018 Automatic extraction of abnormal lip movement features from the alternating motion rate task in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. International journal of speech-language pathology Lip movement during rapid /ba/ repetition changed before speaking rate and intelligibility fell in ALS. Irregular timing of lip cycles was one of the most sensitive early signs, and slower repetition rate may help predict coming speech loss. SLP Case Report 2019 The impact of morphophonological patterns on verb production: evidence from acquired morphological impairment. Clinical linguistics & phonetics In one person with aphasia, past-tense verb errors varied with how common the verb's sound-change pattern was. Regular verbs were easier when their pattern matched common English patterns. Irregular verb accuracy did not show this pattern, but more typical regular errors were more likely. SLP Other 2018 Automatic prediction of intelligible speaking rate for individuals with ALS from speech acoustic and articulatory samples. International journal of speech-language pathology A model estimated intelligible speaking rate from a single short speech sample. Combining sound with lip and tongue movement gave the closest estimates, but it was tested in only 12 people with ALS and 2 controls. SLP Cohort 2019 Speech-in-Noise and Quality-of-Life Measures in School-Aged Children With Normal Hearing and With Unilateral Hearing Loss. Ear and hearing School-aged children with unilateral hearing loss needed speech to be louder relative to background noise than normal-hearing peers, especially when noise came from the normal ear. They also reported poorer hearing-related quality of life. SLP Case Series 2019 Deciphering the mechanisms of phonological therapy in jargon aphasia. International journal of language & communication disorders For a man with severe jargon aphasia, phonological therapy improved naming on two trained word lists, but gains did not last and did not spread to untrained words. SLP Narrative Review 2018 Understanding Dyslexia in the Context of Developmental Language Disorders. Language, speech, and hearing services in schools Dyslexia and developmental language disorder are separate but often co-occur. Many children with dyslexia have language weaknesses beyond word reading. Speech-language pathologists should assess and monitor vocabulary, grammar and discourse, not only decoding. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the Prevalence of Speech and Motor Speech Disorders in Youth With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. American journal of speech-language pathology Most children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome were classified with a motor speech disorder: 82.4% of 17. Dysarthria was most common. Motor speech disorder rates were similar in comparison groups. SLP Other 2019 Efficient Adaptive Speech Reception Threshold Measurements Using Stochastic Approximation Algorithms. Trends in hearing Simulations show word-scoring adaptive tests are more accurate than standard sentence-scoring methods for hearing-in-noise thresholds, especially in cochlear implant users. Clinicians should use at least 20 sentences and start the test below the patient's estimated threshold to avoid errors. SLP Narrative Review 2019 Cognitive predictors of sentence comprehension in children with and without developmental language disorder: Implications for assessment and treatment. International journal of speech-language pathology Children with developmental language disorder understood simple subject-object and reversed word-order sentences worse than matched peers. The model links comprehension to complex working memory, not one single ability. It does not show that training working memory helps. SLP Other 2019 Effect of Noise Reduction Gain Errors on Simulated Cochlear Implant Speech Intelligibility. Trends in hearing Correcting noise-reduction errors in speech gaps helped only when transitions were also accurate. In simulated cochlear implant listening, gap-only fixes had little benefit in stationary noise, and transition-only fixes were weak. SLP RCT 2019 Comparison of Frequency Transposition and Frequency Compression for People With Extensive Dead Regions in the Cochlea. Trends in hearing For people with extensive high-frequency dead regions, frequency lowering did not improve consonant identification, /s/ or /z/ detection, or self-rated hearing over control aids. Speech-in-noise testing was possible for only a few participants. It made /sh/ more audible for many. SLP Other 2019 The Cantonese Hearing in Noise Test for Children. Trends in hearing Cantonese-speaking children's speech understanding in noise improved with age, reaching adult levels around 10 to 13 years. The new CHINT-C sentence lists were consistent, and age-specific norms are available. SLP Other 2019 Visual Speech Benefit in Clear and Degraded Speech Depends on the Auditory Intelligibility of the Talker and the Number of Background Talkers. Trends in hearing Seeing the talker's mouth improved word understanding, but the benefit was not fixed. It varied with background talkers and talker intelligibility. In Experiment 2, degraded speech gave more benefit overall, and a hard-to-understand talker gave more benefit than a clear talker for clear speech. SLP Cohort 2019 A frequent acoustic sign of speech motor delay (SMD). Clinical linguistics & phonetics Children and adults with speech motor delay had longer mid-vowel and diphthong durations in continuous speech than speech-delayed controls without motor speech disorder. This sign was frequent in USA and complex neurodevelopmental disorder groups. SLP RCT 2019 Effects of Phonomotor Treatment on discourse production. Aphasiology In 26 people with chronic aphasia, 60 hours of Phonomotor Treatment was followed by more efficient communication right after treatment, while speech became more informative at three months, not immediately. SLP Other 2019 The Important Role of Contextual Information in Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users and Its Consequences in Speech Tests. Trends in hearing Cochlear implant users relied more on sentence context than normal-hearing listeners. Scoring words from sentences was sensitive, but high scores hit ceiling; adding noise kept scores responsive. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the prevalence of motor speech disorders in children with idiopathic speech delay. Clinical linguistics & phonetics In 415 children recruited for idiopathic speech delay, 17.8% also met research classification criteria for a motor speech disorder. Most were Speech Motor Delay (12%), with childhood dysarthria 3.4% and childhood apraxia 2.4%. SLP Other 2019 Differences in Working Memory Capacity Affect Online Spoken Word Recognition: Evidence From Eye Movements. Trends in hearing Young adults with lower working memory spans took about 550 ms longer to recognise spoken words in noise when holding four digits in memory, compared to those with higher spans. This delay did not change their final accuracy. The effect only appeared under high cognitive load. SLP Other 2019 Energetic and Informational Components of Speech-on-Speech Masking in Binaural Speech Intelligibility and Perceived Listening Effort. Trends in hearing Adding spatial separation, gender differences, or time-reversed maskers to speech improved both understanding and reduced listening effort. These benefits persisted even when speech was already perfectly intelligible. However, individual gains in effort did not predict individual gains in understanding. SLP Other 2019 Construct Validity of the Viking Speech Scale. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) In children with cerebral palsy, Viking Speech Scale ratings tracked listener intelligibility: lower intelligibility usually meant higher speech severity. Scores overlapped within levels, so the scale is useful but not exact. SLP Other 2019 Speech and motor speech disorders and intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Reduced intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome was not associated with age, intelligence, language, or speech motor delay. It was associated with dysarthria or apraxia, especially both together. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Among 346 speakers with eight complex neurodevelopmental disorders, 62.7% had a speech and/or motor speech disorder. Motor speech problems, including speech motor delay, dysarthria and apraxia, were common in some groups, but groups varied widely. SLP Other 2019 Initial studies of the phenotype and persistence of speech motor delay (SMD). Clinical linguistics & phonetics Among children with idiopathic speech delay, speech motor delay was associated with lower speech and language scores. In 14 treated children, 3 still met criteria after 9 years; 11 did not before 9. No early speech or demographic variable was associated with persistence. SLP Case Report 2019 Treatment Targets for Co-Occurring Speech-Language Impairment: A Case Study. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups A single kindergarten child with co-occurring speech and language deficits improved untreated sounds after 14 weeks targeting a complex final cluster. Grammar did not improve on tests, so this shows feasibility, not proof it works for other children. SLP RCT 2019 Computerized Speechreading Training for Deaf Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Deaf children aged 5–7 who completed computerized speechreading training showed no gain on the primary speechreading test compared to a maths control. However, they demonstrated significant improvement in everyday speechreading comprehension three months post-training, though this benefit faded by 11 months. SLP Other 2019 Effect of Audibility and Suprathreshold Deficits on Speech Recognition for Listeners With Unilateral Hearing Loss. Ear and hearing For people with unilateral hearing loss, the impaired ear needs more speech information than the good ear to understand words, even when sound is loud enough. This gap, caused by processing deficits rather than just volume loss, was estimated at 2.1 dB in signal-to-noise ratio. SLP Other 2019 Measurement and Prediction of Binaural-Temporal Integration of Speech Reflections. Trends in hearing Normal-hearing listeners understood speech better when a delayed echo was louder or gave both ears a useful timing cue. A model that only counted early sounds missed these cases. SLP Cohort 2019 Quantifying phonological knowledge in children with phonological disorder. Clinical linguistics & phonetics For preschoolers with phonological disorder, a consonant accuracy cutoff of 20.4% on a large 293-word probe correctly classifies 90.0% of sounds as present or absent in the child’s phonemic inventory. This allows clinicians to estimate functional phonological knowledge from standard accuracy scores without manual minimal-pair analysis. SLP Other 2019 Specificity of Phonological Representations for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Young children with autism were as affected by mispronunciations as younger typically developing children, even though they recognized words less accurately overall. SLP Narrative Review 2019 Speech Production From a Developmental Perspective. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR This is a theoretical review, not a test of therapy. It proposes how speech production develops and suggests ideas for future research, not evidence that any treatment works. SLP Case Series 2019 Impaired Lexical Selection and Fluency in Post-Stroke Aphasia. Aphasiology In people with post-stroke aphasia, less fluent speech was linked to greater difficulty recognising words that sound similar to many other words. This suggests that trouble selecting the right word during listening may share mechanisms with trouble speaking fluently. SLP Other 2019 On the Interaction of Head and Gaze Control With Acoustic Beam Width of a Simulated Beamformer in a Two-Talker Scenario. Trends in hearing Gaze-steered simulated beams improved speech understanding only when the talker stayed put and the beam was narrow. When talkers switched unexpectedly, head-steered beams were better because eyes could not reorient fast enough. SLP Other 2020 Typicality-based semantic treatment for anomia results in multiple levels of generalisation. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Semantic feature work on unusual category examples helped people with aphasia name trained items. Untrained typical items improved more than untrained atypical items. Improvement was uneven, and transfer to broader language tasks was limited. SLP Other 2019 Long-Term maintenance of anomia treatment effects in primary progressive aphasia. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Naming treatments improved initially misnamed words at one month, and slowed decline of already named words; some orthographic gains persisted to 15 months in primary progressive aphasia. SLP Other 2020 Application of a Landmark-Based Method for Acoustic Analysis of Dysphonic Speech. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Landmark-based acoustic analysis distinguished dysphonic from normal speech, with a 7.24% misclassification rate. Fewer landmarks in voiced segments and more in unvoiced segments characterized dysphonia. This method shows promise for objectively assessing speech intelligibility deficits in voice disorders. SLP Cohort 2019 High-Variability Sentence Recognition in Long-Term Cochlear Implant Users: Associations With Rapid Phonological Coding and Executive Functioning. Ear and hearing Long-term cochlear implant users struggle more than normal hearing peers with sentences spoken by multiple talkers and dialects. This difficulty is linked to how quickly they can repeat non-words, not to their executive function. Clinicians should test these high-variability skills to better understand real-world listening challenges. SLP Case-Control 2020 Lexical stress in childhood apraxia of speech: acoustic and kinematic findings. International journal of speech-language pathology Children with childhood apraxia of speech showed less jaw movement timing contrast between stressed and unstressed syllables than typically developing peers, even when their speech sounded accurate. Acoustic differences were not found. SLP Cohort 2020 Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Deep Brain Stimulation on Voice and Speech in Patients With Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation After bilateral deep brain stimulation for dystonia, voice and speech ratings did not show improvement at 6 months, but blinded ratings showed better voice grade, roughness, strain and less severe speech at 12 months. SLP Cohort 2019 Syntactic Ability of Girls With Fragile X Syndrome: Phonological Memory and Discourse Demands on Complex Sentence Use. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Girls with fragile X syndrome produced shorter sentences than age-matched peers during narration. Their sentence complexity did not differ from younger girls matched for cognitive ability. Phonological memory predicted narrative syntax, but not conversation. SLP Other 2019 Effects of Reverberation on the Relation Between Compression Speed and Working Memory for Speech-in-Noise Perception. Ear and hearing Working memory changed which simulated hearing aid compression speed gave better speech-in-noise scores. High working memory favored fast compression, low working memory favored slow compression. The pattern was present in quiet and mild reverberation, then disappeared at higher reverberation. SLP RCT 2019 Understanding Variability in Individual Response to Hearing Aid Signal Processing in Wearable Hearing Aids. Ear and hearing The hearing aid setting with fast compression and frequency compression did not predict better speech recognition than the mild setting. It changed the speech signal more, and age and working memory shaped word repetition in noise. SLP Other 2019 Interactions Between Item Set and Vocoding in Serial Recall. Ear and hearing Vocoding degraded speech significantly reduced serial recall for words and non-words but had little impact on digit span. This suggests digit span measures core memory capacity, while word span reflects the combined load of memory and auditory processing difficulty. ← Previous PAGE 3 OF 12 Next →
