PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Co-occurring medical and behavioural conditions in children with Down syndrome with or without ADHD symptom presentation. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with Down syndrome and ADHD symptoms have significantly more sleep problems, disruptive behaviour, allergies, and seizures than those without. Parents report widespread executive function difficulties, but teachers see these challenges in all children with Down syndrome, not just those with ADHD. OT Cohort 2022 Quality of life and self-perceived health of adolescents in Middle School. CoDAS Adolescents who rated their own health as good or excellent had higher quality of life scores. However, quality of life ratings dropped as age increased, suggesting older teens perceive their well-being differently than younger ones. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Assessment of Manual Abilities Using the Box and Block Test in Children with Bilateral Cerebral Palsy. Occupational therapy international In children with bilateral cerebral palsy, Box and Block Test scores strongly predicted daily living performance. Scores of 28 to 40 blocks indicated a high probability of managing independent wiping. Low scores suggest looking for environmental barriers or cognitive factors rather than just motor limits. OT Survey 2022 Quantitative Evaluation of Vocabulary Emotional Color in Language Teaching. Occupational therapy international In Chinese language teaching, teachers mostly presented adjective emotional meaning through vocabulary lists and translation, and learner self-correction increased with proficiency. This is language-teaching observation, not evidence for therapy. OT Survey 2022 Staffing agency: A bridge to working during retirement. Work (Reading, Mass.) Retired Swedish workers at a staffing agency reported low hours (mostly under 25 per month) and high job-switching. Men worked for social connection and well-being, while single women worked primarily out of economic necessity. Most valued new challenges and appreciation. OT Other 2022 Impact of an Interoception-Based Program on Emotion Regulation in Autistic Children. Occupational therapy international Staff reports showed significant changes in emotion regulation and improvements in interoception after a 25-week curriculum in 14 autistic children. With no control group, this does not prove the curriculum caused the gains. OT Other 2022 Research on the Correlation between Multisource Big Data Virtual Assisted Preschool Education and the Development of Children's Innovative Ability. Occupational therapy international This is a computer science paper about data mining algorithms for kindergarten management systems. It does not report on clinical treatments, therapy outcomes, or patient care, so it contains no findings relevant to physical, occupational, or speech-language therapy. PT OT Survey 2022 Exploring problems for school reintegration following spinal cord injury: Perspectives on the kindergarten through fifth-grade population. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Children with spinal cord injury often return to school needing new support plans. Physical therapy was the most common need, followed by occupational therapy and counseling. Access barriers remain frequent, and many parents did not know their child's injury level. OT Survey 2022 Effects of Smartphone Overdependence and the Quality of Friendship on Depression among High School Students. Occupational therapy international Among 121 Korean high school students, higher smartphone overdependence and lower friendship quality were both linked to more depression. The study did not test treatment, so it does not show changing either would help. OT Other 2022 The Construction of an Action-Speech Feature-Based School Violence Recognition Algorithm and Occupational Therapy Education Model for Adolescents. Occupational therapy international Simulated school violence in 20 students was detected with 85.3% accuracy using waist and leg sensors. An occupational therapy education model for perpetrators and victims is proposed, but no patients were treated, so there is no evidence the therapy reduces violence or harm. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Employers' attitude, intention, skills and barriers in relation to employment of vulnerable workers. Work (Reading, Mass.) Organizations with inclusive HR practices, government compensation usage, and social inclusion missions were far more likely to employ vulnerable workers. Small organizations showed the strongest links between these skills and actual hiring, suggesting targeted employer support is key. OT Qualitative 2022 A mixed methods evaluation of the acceptability of therapy using LEGO® bricks (LEGO® based therapy) in mainstream primary and secondary education. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Facilitators and parents rated LEGO-based therapy as highly acceptable, with facilitators rating it significantly higher than parents. Both groups saw benefits during sessions, but noted that these skills did not consistently transfer to the classroom or home environment. OT SLP Survey 2022 Effect of Covid-19 lockdown on indian children with autism. Research in developmental disabilities Parents reported that children with autism regressed across daily living, language, behaviour, school and online therapy during the Indian lockdown. School performance showed the largest drop. The authors suggest preparing home-based and parent-led plans for future closures. PT OT Cohort 2022 A further study of relations between motor impairment and social communication, cognitive, language, functional impairments, and repetitive behavior severity in children with ASD using the SPARK study dataset. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In 13,887 children with autism, parent-reported motor problems were worse when social communication, repetitive behavior, cognitive, language, or daily-living difficulties were greater. Writing, cutting, ball skills, and coordination problems were most linked to those difficulties. OT Other 2022 The Application of Rehabilitation Therapy Occupational Competency Evaluation Model in the Improvement of College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Occupational therapy international This paper mixes topics from entrepreneurship education, social work, and tour guide training without providing any clinical methods, patient data, or rehabilitation outcomes. It contains no evidence that therapists can apply to patient care. OT Other 2022 Analysis of Emotional Stress of Teachers in Japanese Teaching Process Based on EEG Signal Analysis. Occupational therapy international A small EEG model was reported to separate 5 subjects with emotional stress tendency from 14 controls, with values of 0.93 on the test set and 0.99 on a partial dataset. It did not test treatment or clinical diagnosis. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Participation of children with and without disabilities in home, school, and community in Hong Kong: A 2-year longitudinal study. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Over two years, children with and without disabilities in Hong Kong played fewer indoor games and used more technology at home. School event attendance rose, but community physical activity showed a non-significant decline. How involved children felt in these activities stayed largely unchanged. OT Systematic Review 2022 Health professional perspectives on translation of cultural safety concepts into practice: A scoping study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Health professionals described translating cultural safety into practice through direct community experience, personal relational skills, and training that addressed racism, history, discomfort, and workplace application. OT Other 2022 Handwriting legibility across different writing tasks in school-aged children. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Handwriting legibility drops significantly as task complexity increases, with free-writing being hardest to read. Letter formation is the strongest predictor of overall legibility across all tasks. Assess children on both copying and generating text to catch hidden difficulties. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Developmental profiles of children at risk for autism spectrum disorder at school entry. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children referred for autism assessment but not diagnosed showed functional profiles at school entry nearly identical to those who were diagnosed. Both groups scored significantly lower than typically developing peers across social, emotional, and communication domains, suggesting comparable support needs despite differing funding eligibility. OT SLP Survey 2022 Remote and Hybrid Schooling During COVID-19: Associations with Child Behavior and Sleep. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Parents reported that elementary children in remote schooling had more hyperactivity, peer problems, and total behavior difficulties than those in-person. Remote learners also showed later sleep midpoints and higher odds of co-sleeping. Hybrid learners had fewer issues than remote, but some social deficits remained. OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 A systematic review of relationships and sex education outcomes for students with intellectual disability reported in the international literature. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Most measured outcomes are knowledge-based, not skills. Students want practical skills like contraception use, while teachers and parents focus on safety and behaviour. No validated tools exist to measure these outcomes in this age group. PT OT Other 2022 Ergonomic evaluation of school furniture in Slovenia: From primary school to university. Work (Reading, Mass.) School furniture in Slovenia is largely unsuitable for students, with desk and seat heights being too high for the majority. This mismatch varies by age and gender, requiring at least two furniture sizes in each classroom to accommodate students' diverse body dimensions. OT Other 2022 Design of an Intervention and Education System for Children with Emotional Disorders Based on Semantic Analysis. Occupational therapy international This is a system design report, not a clinical trial. It gives no clear sample, intervention outcomes, or methods, so there is nothing here to change practice. OT Other 2023 Pain sensitivity and perceptual sensitivity are associated with severity of emotional dysregulation in children with ADHD: a cross-sectional analysis using the Temperament in Middle Childhood Questionnaire. Disability and rehabilitation Children with ADHD who react strongly to minor pain or notice small environmental changes more often had severe emotional outbursts. Parents reported these children were more likely to cry when hurt or be upset by a small cut, correlating with higher irritability and anger scores. OT Other 2022 Demographic Covariates, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and Employment Outcomes of Working-Age Adults with Anxiety Disorders: A Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Only 38.4% of adults with anxiety disorders in U.S. vocational rehabilitation records achieved competitive employment. Higher education, counseling, maintenance, or other services were linked to employment; supported employment and transportation were linked to lower employment. PT OT Other 2022 Accuracy and comparison of sensor-based gait speed estimations under standardized and daily life conditions in children undergoing rehabilitation. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A single ankle sensor estimates children's gait speed accurately, but only if you average four walking trials. Children walk at different speeds in daily life compared to a 10-metre test, so clinical assessments may not reflect their real-world mobility. OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Strategies for enhancing social skills of individuals with intellectual disability: A systematic review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Some social skills interventions improved participants' skills, but gains often did not generalise. For intellectual disability, no single approach is proven, so clinicians should treat any intervention as tentative and monitor real-world use. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Reduction in school individualized education program (IEP) services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Nearly half of students with Individualized Education Programs experienced reduced service frequency during the pandemic. Unmet needs were highest for occupational and physical therapy. Clinicians should ask families about service gaps to support advocacy for compensatory education. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Pandemic intake questionnaire to improve quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of outpatient neurologic and developmental care at the Kennedy Krieger institute during the COVID-19 pandemic. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Guardians of children with neurodevelopmental disorders reported worsened mood, behavior, sleep, and therapy-access problems during the pandemic. A pre-visit questionnaire surfaced these concerns, and Five out of six program directors found it helpful. PT OT Cohort 2023 Time-matched accelerometers on limbs and waist in children with CP give new insights into real-life activities after botulinum toxin treatment: A proof of concept study. Journal of pediatric rehabilitation medicine After botulinum toxin injections plus home training, children with cerebral palsy walked less from three weeks through three months. In children injected in an arm, the more affected arm was not used more; the better arm was used more. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Executive Function in Autism: Association with ADHD and ASD Symptoms. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In children with autism, executive function problems tracked with ADHD severity, not autism severity. Flexibility and emotional control were unrelated to either diagnosis. This suggests ADHD symptoms, not autism itself, drive most observed executive function deficits. OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Education on the consequences of traumatic brain injury for children and adolescents with TBI and families/caregivers: a systematic scoping review. Brain injury Pediatric TBI education mostly reached caregivers, not children alone. Written discharge instructions were common, and adding verbal or multimedia support appeared better for recall. OT Pilot 2022 Brief Report: Feasibility and Acceptability of a Remote-Based Nutrition Education Program for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A COVID-19 Pilot Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Ten adolescents with autism found a four-week remote nutrition program acceptable and feasible. High attendance and positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers suggest Zoom is a viable delivery method, though efficacy on eating habits was not tested. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 The Impact of School Strategies and the Home Environment on Home Learning Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Children With and Without Developmental Disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of children with developmental disorders rated remote teaching methods as less effective and were less satisfied with school measures than parents of typically developing children. Teacher alignment and child motivation predicted better experiences, but teacher-led methods helped only typically developing children. PT OT Other 2022 Acceptability of wearable inertial sensors, completeness of data, and day-to-day variability of everyday life motor activities in children and adolescents with neuromotor impairments. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Most children with neuromotor impairments accepted wearing movement sensors for a week, though charging, showering, and slipping sensors caused missing days. A full week is needed for dependable estimates. PT OT Survey 2022 Parent-report health-related quality of life in school-aged children with cerebral palsy: A cross-sectional study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Portuguese parents of 68 school-aged children with cerebral palsy reported clinically low quality of life in physical well-being, mood and emotions, autonomy, and bullying compared with European norms. Mobility and cognitive impairment were linked to lower scores. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Music education contributes to development and personal change in young adults with disabilities. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Young adults with intellectual disabilities described a three-year music education as building confidence, friendship and new skills. Teachers and staff reported increased participation and well-being. This describes what participants said about the experience. It does not test whether the programme caused these changes. OT SLP Cohort 2023 Social and Behavioural Outcomes of School Aged Autistic Children Who Received Community-Based Early Interventions. Journal of autism and developmental disorders At school age, autistic children who had received group early intervention and standard community early intervention were largely similar. Both showed moderate to low adaptive behaviour and social skills; less play disruption was reported for the group intervention children. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Wrist-Worn devices to encourage affected upper limb movement in unilateral cerebral palsy: Participatory design workshops. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Children with unilateral cerebral palsy and their therapists told researchers that wrist-worn devices must look like standard fitness trackers and be easy to fasten with one hand. School policies on phones and trackers were the biggest practical barrier to using them daily. OT SLP RCT 2022 Parents' priorities and preferences for treatment of children with ADHD: Qualitative inquiry in the MADDY study. Child: care, health and development Parents of children with ADHD described stress at home and school, worries about medication side effects, and barriers to finding treatments that fit their child. They wanted flexible options and providers who understood ADHD. OT Survey 2022 The impact of COVID-19 on adolescent wellness in Chicago. Child: care, health and development Overall adolescent wellness scores did not significantly change from February to April 2020. Self-reported balance, learning, and time with friends were lower during the pandemic. OT Survey 2022 COVID-19 and mental health of primary school children: Comparison of 2019 and 2020. Child: care, health and development Primary school children's overall emotional symptom scores showed no clear difference between June 2019 and June 2020. A few individual items differed slightly, but the authors did not treat these as clear differences. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Developmental referrals of pre-school children in a diverse community in England: The importance of parental migration for referral rates. Child: care, health and development In a Bristol community paediatric service, children with two migrant parents were three times more likely to be referred for developmental concerns than those with two UK-born parents. Somali children had six times the referral rate for autism compared to white or mixed-heritage peers. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Trajectories of Executive Functions After Early Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury: Teacher Ratings in the Initial 81 Months Postinjury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Teacher ratings showed two groups: 65% stayed in the normal range, while 35% had executive function concerns that worsened over time. Children in the struggling group were more likely to have had a brain injury, lower socio-economic status, and authoritarian parenting. OT SLP RCT 2022 Supporting peer engagement for low-income preschool students with autism spectrum disorder during academic instruction: A pilot randomized trial. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Teachers trained to embed social communication strategies into small group academic instruction used them more consistently. While all students improved in joint engagement and language, only the treatment group showed significantly increased peer engagement. This suggests the approach specifically targets peer interaction during classroom activities. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 An interdisciplinary nationwide complex intervention for lifespan neurodevelopmental service development: Underpinning principles and realist programme theory. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stakeholders identified seven practitioner-level mechanisms for successful service change: being action-oriented, providing concise evidence-informed information, and being an accessible team. These principles guided the National Autism Implementation Team in Scotland. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Sociocultural variables have a major impact on participation in patients treated for paediatric posterior fossa tumours. Child: care, health and development Children treated for posterior fossa tumours face high rates of school and social difficulties. These barriers were linked to a cumulative load of risk factors, including maternal education level, lack of regular physical activity, and treatment side effects like cerebellar mutism. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Vision function in children 10 years after grade 3 or 4 intraventricular haemorrhage with ventricular dilation: A masked prospective study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Ten years later, every child tested had at least one visual impairment, averaging four per child. Parents reported normal vision for most, missing eye movement and processing deficits linked to lower cognitive scores and extra school support. OT SLP Survey 2023 Transition to Kindergarten for Children on the Autism Spectrum: Perspectives of Korean-American Parents. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Korean-American parents put child behavior and teacher cooperation first. They named school-system knowledge and teacher relationships as top barriers. First-generation parents, lower income, and self-contained placement were linked to more reported challenges. ← Previous PAGE 6 OF 12 Next →
