- SLPOther2019Brief Report: Cross-Modal Capture: Preliminary Evidence of Inefficient Filtering in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersWhen children ignored sounds, groups did not differ overall, but children with autism were slowed more by mismatched sounds at some delays. They were not slower when asked to judge sound-picture matches. Small study, so preliminary.
- PTOther2019Physical activity levels of children and adolescents with moderate-to-severe intellectual disability.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDOnly 47% of children and adolescents with moderate-to-severe intellectual disability met the 60-minute daily moderate-to-vigorous activity recommendation using intellectual disability-specific thresholds. Lower motor development was linked to lower activity. Motor skill support may be a practical focus.
- OTSLPOther2019Depression Characterization and Race Among Stroke Survivors Receiving Inpatient Rehabilitation.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationDepression was documented in 35% of white, 22% of African American, and 16.7% of other race/ethnicity stroke inpatient rehabilitation patients. - SLPPilot2019Measuring emotional support in family networks: Adapting the Family Network Method for individuals with a mild intellectual disability.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDSimplified questions, cards and boxes were added to help people with mild intellectual disability describe family emotional support. Pilots showed multiple support types were too complex, and moderate intellectual disability remained challenging.
- PTOther2018A predictor of aerobic threshold for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn men with reduced heart function, a simple measure of oxygen use during the first four minutes of exercise strongly predicted their aerobic threshold. This link was absent in men with preserved heart function. The finding suggests a potential screening tool for a specific subgroup, but the study was tiny and male-only.
- SLPOther2018Understanding Friendship Sex Heterophily and Relational Characteristics to Optimize the Selection of Peer Models for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersFor boys with autism, having more friends was linked to higher social connection in class; having female friends was linked to lower connection. Girls did not show this pattern.
- PTPilot2018Effects of 8 weeks of modified hatha yoga training on resting-state brain activity and the p300 ERP in patients with physical disability-related stress.Journal of physical therapy scienceModified hatha yoga (poses, breathing, meditation) added to routine rehabilitation did not differ from control in brain activity or brain response to sound. The yoga group alone showed larger alpha and delta waves, faster reaction time and faster brain response to sound.
- PTPilot2018Dynamic balance asymmetries in pre-season injury-prevention screening in healthy young soccer players using the Modified Star Excursion Balance Test-a pilot study.Journal of physical therapy scienceYoung male soccer players had a side-to-side dynamic balance asymmetry when reaching backward and outward, with the stability-dominant leg farther. This pilot found asymmetry only; it did not show that the asymmetry causes or predicts injury.
- PTOTSLPPilot2018The difficulty of studying race-ethnic stroke rehabilitation disparities in a community.Topics in stroke rehabilitationCommunity stroke rehabilitation data collection across physical, occupational and speech therapy venues was feasible to set up, but only 13 of 63 partners used the forms and 20 of 48 patients contributed data. This pilot cannot yet answer disparity questions.
- OTRCT2018Myocontrol is closed-loop control: incidental feedback is sufficient for scaling the prosthesis force in routine grasping.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAble-bodied people scaled myoelectric prosthesis grasp force across five levels using muscle contraction plus prosthesis motion and sound. - PTOther2018Correlation between the Gait Deviation Index and skeletal muscle mass in children with spastic cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy, worse Gait Deviation Index scores were linked to lower limb muscle mass index and slower chair stand time. Grip strength and upper limb muscle mass index were not linked.
- PTOther2018Study on the design development of a multi joint ankle foot orthosis.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn ten stroke patients, the Klenzak multi-joint AFO showed faster walking and higher Berg balance scores than a conventional AFO. The study was very small and the authors say the results cannot be applied to all stroke patients.
- PTOTSLPCohort2018Course of Social Participation in the First 2 Years After Stroke and Its Associations With Demographic and Stroke-Related Factors.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairSocial participation did not simply improve after stroke. People increased work and household hours over two years while social and leisure activity decreased, and restrictions eased mostly in the first year. Older, lower-educated, and ADL-dependent patients showed worse courses.
- PTOther2018Effect of hindlimb unloading and reloading on the soleus and plantaris muscles in diabetic rats.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn diabetic rats, one week of reloading after two weeks of hindlimb suspension brought soleus fiber size back to control levels, but plantaris fiber size stayed smaller than control. This is rat tissue data, not human evidence.
- PTRCT2018Dual-task training of children with neuromotor disorders during robot-assisted gait therapy: prerequisites of patients and influence on leg muscle activity.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAdding arm pointing to a Lokomat walking game lowered game scores and made 5 of 20 children show compensatory walking. Leg muscle activity during stance fell. Use GMFCS, WeeFIM mobility or FAC, not body-function tests, to judge who can try it.
- PTRCT2018Effect of radial shock wave on chronic pelvic pain syndrome/chronic prostatitis.Journal of physical therapy scienceRadial shock waves improved pain, urinary symptoms and quality of life more than sham in men with chronic pelvic pain syndrome. The effect was short-term in 40 participants, so long-term benefit is not shown.

Between-group naming gains were not clear.
- OTCohort2019Using Decision Tree Methodology to Predict Employment After Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationAfter moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, shorter post-traumatic amnesia was the strongest predictor of later competitive employment. Preinjury job type and higher education also appeared. This was a prediction model, not treatment evidence.
- PTOTSystematic Review2018Rehabilitation and early mobilization in the critical patient: systematic review.Journal of physical therapy scienceEarly mobilization in ICU patients showed mixed results. Some studies found improved muscle strength and walking distance at discharge, while others showed no difference in functional recovery. Most included trials had low methodological quality, making firm conclusions about effectiveness difficult.
- PTOther2018Novel method for evaluation of frontal plane knee alignment using bony prominences in patients with osteoarthritis.Journal of physical therapy scienceA photo-based knee alignment check using markers on bony points matched full-leg X-ray angles closely in people with knee osteoarthritis, and two non-medical examiners could repeat it reliably.
- SLPOther2018Reliability of parent report measures of behaviour in children with Down syndrome.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRFor children with Down syndrome, broad behaviour scores were more consistent than individual scores, especially somatic and some anxiety-related scores. Clinicians should not rely on one score alone to judge emotional symptoms.
- OTOther2018Psychometric Evaluation of the Short Sensory Profile in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn 388 children with autism, the Short Sensory Profile did not fit its usual subscale structure. Only taste/smell, movement, and low energy scores held up. Its total score mixed several unrelated sensory behaviours and should not be treated as one sensory problem.
- PTOTCohort2018Cognitive function impacts gait, functional mobility and falls in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.Gait & postureIn men and women with FXTAS, slower processing speed and poorer attention were linked to shorter strides, slower turning, and more falls in the past year. These cognitive deficits may help identify patients at higher risk of falling.
- PTOther2018Children With Cerebral Palsy Have Greater Stride-to-Stride Variability of Muscle Synergies During Gait Than Typically Developing Children: Implications for Motor Control Complexity.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairChildren with cerebral palsy show greater stride-to-stride variability in muscle synergy patterns than typically developing peers. Their walking uses fewer total synergies but distributes them across more inconsistent structures, suggesting less stable motor control rather than just weaker muscles.
- PTOther2018Effectiveness of home-based physiotherapy on pain and disability in participants with osteoarthritis of knee: an observational study.Journal of physical therapy sciencePain and disability scores improved after home-based physiotherapy combining TENS, ultrasound, exercise, and manual therapy in 139 adults with knee osteoarthritis. With no comparison group, the study cannot show these components caused improvement.

This is a single case report, so it cannot prove the treatment works for other patients.
- PTPilot2018Effects of gait support in patients with spinocerebellar degeneration by a wearable robot based on synchronization control.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationOne setting of a wearable robot was associated with smoother trunk walking in front-to-back and up-and-down directions in 12 people with spinocerebellar degeneration, but speed, stride length and cadence did not improve in most. The finding was only for short walking tests.
- PTRCT2018Effects of breathing exercises on resting metabolic rate and maximal oxygen uptake.Journal of physical therapy scienceBoth breathing exercises were followed by higher oxygen uptake scores in healthy adults, and diaphragm breathing was followed by higher resting metabolic rate scores. The two exercises did not differ from each other.
- PTOTOther2018Effects of a progressive walking program on the risk of developing locomotive syndrome in elderly Japanese people: a single-arm trial.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 24 untrained older adults, a 4-month progressive walking program improved two-step test scores and self-reported locomotive syndrome risk, but stand-up scores did not change. Without a control group, this cannot prove the program caused the improvements.
- PTOTRCT2018Home-based transcranial direct current stimulation plus tracking training therapy in people with stroke: an open-label feasibility study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationSix people with chronic stroke safely completed home-based tDCS and finger tracking. All participants could set up the equipment and recommended the program. However, the intervention did not improve motor or cognitive function, likely because the five short sessions were insufficient for efficacy.
