- SLPOther2018Objective Prediction of Hearing Aid Benefit Across Listener Groups Using Machine Learning: Speech Recognition Performance With Binaural Noise-Reduction Algorithms.Trends in hearingA model that predicts hearing aid benefit from speech-in-noise scores tracked group results in cafeteria noise, but it did not reliably predict individual benefit from audiograms alone.
- SLPOther2018A New Method for Assessing Masking and Residual Inhibition of Tinnitus.Trends in hearingA pulsed-noise test found masking in 98.5% of tinnitus patients and temporary suppression in 86.7%, giving speech therapists a quicker way to measure how sound affects tinnitus.
- PTOTOther2018The validity and reliability of the Test of Arm Selective Control for children with cerebral palsy: a prospective cross-sectional study.Developmental medicine and child neurologyThe TASC can rate selective arm control in children with cerebral palsy, and therapists scored it consistently. It took about 16 minutes, tracked hand function and arm involvement, and did not test treatment change.
- OTOther2018Allocentric Versus Egocentric Spatial Memory in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with ASD spent less time in the correct area than typically developing adults when they had to learn a hidden platform from different sides. This difficulty was absent in self-centred navigation and when the platform moved with objects.
- SLPOther2018Adaptive Processes in Hearing.Trends in hearingThis is an editorial introduction to a hearing-research symposium special issue. It describes topics and proceedings, not a study with participants, methods, results, or findings.
- SLPRCT2018Effects of Cochlear Implantation on Binaural Hearing in Adults With Unilateral Hearing Loss.Trends in hearingAdults with acquired unilateral hearing loss had better localization and better speech-in-noise scores after a cochlear implant program that included fitting, loudness matching, and aural rehabilitation, but not when the masker was on the implant side.
- PTSurvey2018Understanding the Digital Gap Among US Adults With Disability: Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Health Information National Trends Survey 2013.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesUS adults with disability were not less likely to exchange medical information electronically with a provider. They were less likely to use the internet for recent health information, especially with vision or mobility difficulty.
- PTOTSLPOther2018Why do stroke survivors not receive recommended amounts of active therapy? Findings from the ReAcT study, a mixed-methods case-study evaluation in eight stroke units.Clinical rehabilitationTherapists spent between 1.2 and 6.5 hours per week on meetings and paperwork rather than direct patient care. In units with the highest staffing levels, therapy minutes were higher, but even these units struggled to meet guidelines. Administrative burden was the primary barrier to delivering recommended therapy.
- PTOther2018Relationship between the change in one-leg standing time due to visual information interception and hip joint internal rotation pattern.Journal of physical therapy scienceClosing the eyes made left and right one-leg standing times differ more often. In healthy students with unequal hip internal rotation, the one-leg standing pattern matched the hip pattern more often with eyes closed.
- PTOTOther2018Quantification of upper limb position sense using an exoskeleton and a virtual reality display.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA robot and virtual arm let 30 healthy adults identify the smallest elbow angle differences of 7.0 and 5.9 degrees. Repeated scores were fair to good, but shifted slightly after one week, and only healthy adults were tested.
- OTCohort2018The Effect of a Social-Emotional Intervention on the Development of Preterm Infants in Institutions.Infants and young childrenPreterm infants in institutional care with caregiver training and structural changes showed 2.25 points every 3 months faster growth on developmental scores than those in usual care. They still scored below full-term peers.
- SLPOther2018Interaural Time-Difference Discrimination as a Measure of Place of Stimulation for Cochlear-Implant Users With Single-Sided Deafness.Trends in hearingListeners with single-sided deafness could detect timing differences when pulse trains were sent to one implant electrode and the hearing ear. A best frequency was estimated for 17 of 26 electrodes, but the test is not clinically usable yet.
- PTOther2018Effect of a cervical support pillow on sternocleidomastoid activity and satisfaction in asymptomatic participants.Journal of physical therapy scienceA cervical support pillow reduced neck muscle activity and increased satisfaction compared with a general pillow in 20 asymptomatic people, but only during 5-minute supine rest, not sleep.
- PTOTSurvey2018Recognition of roles of various professionals by home-visiting specialists.Journal of physical therapy scienceHome-visiting nurses were widely recognized for explaining and reporting symptom changes. Rehabilitation specialists were less recognized for dementia and end-of-life support. Dieticians had low recognition from other professions, so teams may miss their role.
- OTRCT2018Evaluation of EMG pattern recognition for upper limb prosthesis control: a case study in comparison with direct myoelectric control.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationEMG pattern recognition did not beat direct myoelectric control in one transradial amputee using a 2-DOF prosthesis. Most outcomes were similar, several favored direct control, and dexterity declined one week after pattern recognition training.
- SLPRCT2018Comparison of Two Music Training Approaches on Music and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users.Trends in hearingSix weeks of music training in cochlear implant users showed no clear improvement in word or sentence understanding. Computer pitch/timbre training improved melodic contour identification, and group music therapy improved emotion identification.
- SLPCase Series2018EHMT1 mosaicism in apparently unaffected parents is associated with autism spectrum disorder and neurocognitive dysfunction.Molecular autismThree adults with EHMT1 mosaicism, previously thought unaffected, were diagnosed with autism and mood disorders. Despite high adaptive scores, they showed social isolation and cognitive inflexibility. Genetic testing should be considered in parents with psychiatric symptoms and children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
- SLPRCT2018Randomised controlled trial of simvastatin treatment for autism in young children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (SANTA).Molecular autismNo significant behavioural differences were seen between simvastatin and placebo in young children with NF1-autism; the trial was not powered, safety and acceptability were good, and imaging signals were preliminary.
- PTOther2018Association between computer-based testing and national examination results among physical therapy students.Journal of physical therapy scienceFreshman and sophomore computer test scores tracked with national exam results, but only for learning satisfaction. School life and graduation research satisfaction showed no link. Early test ranks were not strong enough to predict who would struggle on the final exam.
- SLPOther2018Goal prediction in 2-year-old children with and without autism spectrum disorder: An eye-tracking study.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchWhen a person’s hand moved toward an object, 2-year-old children with ASD anticipated the goal as well as typically developing peers. When the hand paused without movement cues, children with ASD tended to look at the prior location, not the prior goal.
- SLPOther2018Music and Speech Perception in Children Using Sung Speech.Trends in hearingIn 30 children, musicians did better at recognizing melody shape and sentence recognition in noise than nonmusicians. Sung speech made sentence recognition in noise worse than spoken speech. This describes perception, not a therapy effect.
- OTOther2018Evaluating Sensory Processing in Fragile X Syndrome: Psychometric Analysis of the Brain Body Center Sensory Scales (BBCSS).Journal of autism and developmental disordersA parent-report sensory questionnaire for people with Fragile X syndrome showed stable scores over two months and consistent ratings across auditory, visual, tactile, eating and digestive areas. It can help describe sensory patterns, but it does not show any treatment works.
- OTSurvey2018Association of posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury with aggressive driving in Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans.Rehabilitation psychologyVeterans with PTSD, with or without TBI, were more likely to say they needed to cut down on aggressive driving. Veterans with TBI alone were not. Ask about aggressive driving in PTSD care.
- SLPCase-Control2018Oscillatory rhythm of reward: anticipation and processing of rewards in children with and without autism.Molecular autismNo clear difference appeared between children with ASD and typically developing children while they waited for social feedback. After feedback, children with ASD showed more brain activity thought to reflect engagement and less activity thought to reflect reward than typically developing children.
- PTRCT2018Effect of scapular stabilization exercise on neck alignment and muscle activity in patients with forward head posture.Journal of physical therapy scienceBoth scapular stabilization and neck stabilization exercises improved neck alignment and muscle activity in patients with forward head posture. Scapular stabilization produced greater change in a neck alignment angle and in lower trapezius and serratus anterior activation.
- SLPCase-Control2018Facial expression recognition as a candidate marker for autism spectrum disorder: how frequent and severe are deficits?Molecular autismOn a brief film-based emotion task, 63% of high-functioning people with ASD showed severe deficits, but 15.3% performed within the control range.
- PTSystematic Review2018Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and rehabilitation: taking stock of evidence based medicine: a systematic review of the literature.Journal of physical therapy scienceNo randomised trials for hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos rehabilitation were found. The only included study was a poor-quality cohort of 12 women given strength, body awareness, core stability, education, cognitive behavioural therapy, and home exercises, so improvements are not evidence.
- PTOTRCT2018Recalibrating disparities in perceived and actual balance abilities in older adults: a mixed-methods evaluation of a novel exergaming intervention.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationOlder adults who played a supervised balance game for eight short sessions showed a closer match between perceived and actual balance. Some gained confidence; others recognised limits and reduced risky movements. Falls were not measured.
- PTSurvey2018The awareness of healthcare staff towards post-stroke cognitive impairment: a cross sectional study.Journal of physical therapy scienceMost stroke staff believed they knew about post-stroke cognitive deficits, but only 40% had taken a course. They varied in how many patients they thought had decline. Many felt cognitive function should be routinely assessed, yet few discussed the impact with families.
- SLPOther2018Age-Related Performance on Vowel Identification and the Spectral-temporally Modulated Ripple Test in Children With Normal Hearing and With Cochlear Implants.Trends in hearingTime with a cochlear implant, not the child's age, predicted vowel recognition and frequency discrimination in implanted children. In normal-hearing children, age predicted degraded vowel recognition. Time with the implant may matter more than age when reading speech perception tests.
- Narrative Review2018Advancing quantitative techniques to improve understanding of the skeletal structure-function relationship.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationImaging and modeling techniques for bone shape and movement are reviewed, but no original patient results are reported, so there is nothing here to change therapy.
- Other2018Probabilistic Matching of Deidentified Data From a Trauma Registry and a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Center: A Follow-up Validation Study.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationA trauma registry and TBI rehabilitation database matching algorithm linked most pairs as the same person, but it missed many people who should have linked. It validates data linkage, not a treatment.
- PTOTOther2018The test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change of the short-form Barthel Index (5 items) and its associations with chronic stroke-specific impairments.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 24 chronic stroke patients, the 5-item Barthel Index was stable across tests a week apart and tracked postural control and motor function. A 7.84-point change is the smallest score change unlikely to be random measurement error.
- SLPCase-Control2018Cortical associates of emotional reactivity and regulation in childhood stuttering.Journal of fluency disordersYoung children who stutter showed stronger brain responses to unpleasant pictures than peers who do not stutter. Those with higher self-regulation scores had weaker responses to these negative images. This links stuttering to heightened emotional reactivity, not necessarily a deficit in regulating emotions.
- OTSLPCohort2018From Using Tools to Using Language in Infant Siblings of Children with Autism.Journal of autism and developmental disordersHigh-risk infants who used a spoon functionally at 10 months had better word comprehension at 12 months and word production at 24 and 36 months. Infants later diagnosed with autism showed delayed emergence of these functional actions compared to those without diagnosis.
- SLPMeta-Analysis2018A Systematic Review of Group Social Skills Interventions, and Meta-analysis of Outcomes, for Children with High Functioning ASD.Journal of autism and developmental disordersChildren and young people with high-functioning autism who joined group social skills programmes had fewer parent-rated social difficulties than delayed controls. Gains were largest for social communication and repetitive behaviour, but problem behaviour did not improve.
- PTQualitative2018Participatory Design of an Online Self-Management Tool for Users With Spinal Cord Injury: Qualitative Study.JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologiesPeople with spinal cord injury wanted online self-management information that was trusted, peer-linked, and accessible. Anonymous ratings felt risky; they preferred human navigators and clear credibility labels. The tool was designed, not tested for outcomes.
- PTRCT2018Pelvic floor muscle training and electrical stimulation as rehabilitation after radical prostatectomy: a randomized controlled trial.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter radical prostatectomy, pelvic floor exercises, with or without anal electrical stimulation, did not improve pelvic floor muscle strength more than routine instructions. Urinary and sexual function worsened after surgery and recovered similarly over time in all groups.
- SLPCase-Control2018Altered reward system reactivity for personalized circumscribed interests in autism.Molecular autismAcross the whole brain, youth with autism did not differ from controls in response to personal interests versus social approval. A focused analysis of a reward-related brain region found greater interest response in autism, and it was related to social impairment.
- SLPPilot2018Improving Speech Recognition in Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users by Listening With the Better Ear.Trends in hearingFor bilateral cochlear implant users, laboratory testing showed that sending the target talker to the better ear and background to the other ear improved speech-in-noise scores. The better-ear condition outperformed the same algorithm used as noise reduction in both ears.
- PTOther2018Changes in ventilation mechanics during expiratory rib cage compression in healthy males.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn six healthy men lying down, manual rib cage compression during expiration made breaths deeper and slower, reduced lung volume after breathing out, and increased resistance to breathing. It did not increase lung volume beyond quiet breathing.
- SLPOther2018Use of a Deep Recurrent Neural Network to Reduce Wind Noise: Effects on Judged Speech Intelligibility and Sound Quality.Trends in hearingListeners preferred hearing aid recordings with wind noise reduced by a computer algorithm over unprocessed wind-noise recordings, but not consistently over simple high-pass filtering. Preferences were small and lab-based, not tested in real hearing aids.
- PTRCT2018Effects of integrated treatment with LED and microcurrent on muscle tone and stiffness in the calf muscle during moderate aerobic exercise.Journal of physical therapy scienceA calf device delivering both LED and microcurrent lowered stiffness immediately and at 5 minutes, and lowered tone at 5 minutes, during treadmill walking in 20 healthy male students. It cannot show which component caused this, and the reported outcomes were tone and stiffness.
- PTPilot2018Relationship between white matter fiber damage and revised version of the ability for basic movement scale in patients with stroke: a diffusion tensor tract-based spatial statistic study.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 12 stroke patients, those grouped by higher basic movement scores had higher white matter tract signals in several left hemisphere tracts. The corticospinal tract did not differ between groups.
- SLPCohort2018Time of Day and Hearing Aid Adoption.Trends in hearingPatients with audiology appointments at noon or 4 p.m. were less likely to adopt hearing aids. Those who did adopt were less likely to return them. This is an observational link, not proof that changing appointment time changes behavior.
- SLPOther2018Outcomes With a Self-Fitting Hearing Aid.Trends in hearingFor most outcomes, self-fitted hearing aids were no different from assisted fittings. Experienced users still preferred their own conventional aids and found self-fitted aids harder to manage.
- PTSurvey2018Gender and posture are significant risk factors to musculoskeletal symptoms during touchscreen tablet computer use.Journal of physical therapy scienceAmong tablet owners surveyed, 67.9% reported neck or shoulder symptoms while using the device. Women and people sitting without back support were linked to greater likelihood.
- PTOther2018Effects of trunk stabilization exercise on the local muscle activity and balance ability of normal subjects.Journal of physical therapy scienceTrunk stabilization exercise improved balance scores and activity of two trunk muscles more than sitting pelvic tilting in 40 healthy young adults. The short program used three exercises for four weeks. It does not show benefit in patients.
- Other2018Significant transcriptional changes in 15q duplication but not Angelman syndrome deletion stem cell-derived neurons.Molecular autismLab neurons grown from baby tooth stem cells showed widespread gene expression changes in 15q duplication syndrome, especially lower levels of genes called FOXO1 and RORA, but few changes in Angelman deletion neurons. This is a molecular clue, not a treatment result.
- OTCohort2018The bidirectional association between sleep problems and autism spectrum disorder: a population-based cohort study.Molecular autismSleep problems in toddlers did not predict later autistic traits once early traits were considered. Autistic traits and ASD in childhood were linked to more sleep problems later, and sleep problems increased over time in children with ASD.
