Effects of trunk stabilization exercise on the local muscle activity and balance ability of normal subjects.

WHAT IT FOUND

Trunk stabilization exercise improved balance scores and activity of two trunk muscles more than sitting pelvic tilting in 40 healthy young adults.

The short program used three exercises for four weeks. It does not show benefit in patients.

Key findings

01The experimental group showed significant increases in balance index, transversus abdominis activity, and internal oblique activity compared with its pre-test results.

02The control group showed significant increases in balance index and internal oblique activity compared with its pre-test results.

03The experimental group showed significant post-test gain differences compared with the control group in balance index, transversus abdominis activity, and internal oblique activity.

What it does not show

The study included 40 normal subjects, so it is small and does not include patients. The intervention period was short, 4 weeks. The paper does not describe randomization or blinding. The participants had no lower-extremity orthopedic history, so the results may not apply to people with balance or trunk problems. The experimental group received hollowing, curl-up, and bridging together, so the contribution of any single exercise cannot be separated. The control group was pelvic tilting, so the study does not show whether stabilization is better than no exercise.

Declared interests

The paper was supported by Joongbu University Research & Development Fund, in 2018. The conflict of interest section states none.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that the stabilization program alone caused the gains. The control group also improved in balance index and internal oblique activity, and the experimental group received hollowing, curl-up, and bridging together, so their separate contributions cannot be separated.
