- SLPCase-Control2017Audition-specific temporal processing deficits associated with language function in children with autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchChildren with autism needed longer silent gaps to hear them than typically developing peers, but saw visual gaps just as well. This auditory deficit correlated with weaker phonological memory and receptive language, suggesting rapid sound processing issues may underpin communication difficulties.
- SLPOther2018Perspective-taking is two-sided: Misunderstandings between people with Asperger's syndrome and their family members.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceOverall, the two groups did not misjudge each other’s ratings much, but both sides felt misunderstood. People with Asperger's often expected family members to rate them lower, while family members sometimes overestimated their perspective-taking difficulties.
- PTOther2018Plasma Leptin and Reduced FEV1 and FVC in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationIn chronic spinal cord injury, higher plasma leptin was linked to lower FEV1 and FVC, even after accounting for BMI and injury severity. Adiponectin showed no association.
- OTOther2018Self-injurious behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder enrolled in the Study to Explore Early Development.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceParent-reported self-injury was common in 692 children with ASD: 28% current, 47% ever. It went with sleep, gut, behavior, adaptive skills, and younger maternal age; clinicians observed it in 6%.
- PTOTCohort2018Dynamic stability during split-belt walking and the relationship with step length symmetry.Gait & postureHealthy adults became less stable and less symmetrical when walking on split-belt treadmills. Anterior-posterior stability and symmetry improved together over 15 minutes, but side-to-side stability did not recover. Higher baseline stability predicted better symmetry during the perturbation.
- OTSLPOther2018The combined impact of social support and perceived stress on quality of life in adults with autism spectrum disorder and without intellectual disability.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceSocial support did not weaken the link between stress and lower quality of life in adults with autism without intellectual disability. Higher stress and lower support each tracked with lower quality of life, so both may need separate attention.
- PTQualitative2018The necessary conditions of engagement for the therapeutic relationship in physiotherapy: an interpretive description study.Archives of physiotherapyTherapists and patients identified four conditions needed to build a relationship: being present, receptive, genuine, and committed. Both parties must actively contribute to these states; the relationship does not happen automatically or through a checklist of skills.
- PTOTSLPCohort2018Aging effects on leg joint variability during walking with balance perturbations.Gait & postureOlder adults did not scale their hip, knee, and ankle joint adjustments to increasing visual perturbations, unlike younger adults. They showed disproportionately large variability even at the smallest disturbance, suggesting a saturated or misgraded balance response.
- PTRCT2018Effects of Respiratory Training on Heart Rate Variability and Baroreflex Sensitivity in Individuals With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationIn 44 people with chronic spinal cord injury, 20 sessions of combined inspiratory and expiratory training improved breathing capacity and heart-rate reflex measures. Sitting blood pressure response did not show a clear change.
- Qualitative2018Obstetric clinicians' experiences and educational preparation for caring for pregnant women with physical disabilities: A qualitative study.Disability and health journalNone of 14 obstetric clinicians had formal training to care for pregnant women with physical disabilities. They learned on the job and from patients. Several described the work as rewarding and attributed problems to systems barriers rather than patients.
- PTOTPilot2018Detection of early symptoms of cumulativetrauma disorders among mothers of handicapped children: a pilot study.Journal of physical therapy scienceMothers of children with cerebral palsy who needed help with transfer and daily care had lower hand grip strength and lower wrist extensor muscle activity than mothers of healthy children. This pilot does not show that caregiving caused the difference.
- PTOther2018Influences of knee osteoarthritis and walking difficulty on knee kinematics and kinetics.Gait & postureAt a controlled walking speed, knee OA patients who reported walking difficulty had lower peak knee extension moments and a higher first peak knee adduction moment than those without difficulty. Those without difficulty did not differ from controls on moments.
- Narrative Review2018Health Services Research in Rehabilitation and Disability-The Time is Now.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationNo patient outcomes or tested interventions are reported. This is a health services research overview for rehabilitation policy, not evidence to change Monday practice.
- PTOther2018Kinematic Differences During Single-Leg Step-Down Between Individuals With Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome and Individuals Without Hip Pain. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapyDuring a single-leg step-down, people with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome showed, on average, 4.9° more hip bending and 4.1° more forward pelvic tilt than people without hip pain. This was a movement difference, not a treatment result.
- PTPilot2018Exploring cued and non-cued motor imagery interventions in people with multiple sclerosis: a randomised feasibility trial and reliability study.Archives of physiotherapyHome-based motor imagery with weekly phone support was feasible and safe in 15 people with MS; preliminary walking, fatigue and quality-of-life changes occurred in all groups, but cannot show which group did better.
- PTOTOther2018Introducing the Adults with Chronic Healthcare Needs (ACHCN) definition and screening instrument: Rationale, supporting evidence and testing.Disability and health journalA proposed screener identifies working-age adults with chronic healthcare needs by combining ongoing conditions or functional difficulties with elevated service use or unmet need. Cognitive testing supported item wording, but it has not yet been field tested.
- PTOTRCT2017Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Severely Affected Arm-Hand Motor Function in Patients After an Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Pilot Randomized Control Trial.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationCathodal tDCS plus occupational therapy did not improve arm-hand function more than sham plus occupational therapy after severe acute stroke. The tDCS group gained 10 points on the 57-point arm-hand test versus 2 with sham, but 16 patients were too few.
- SLPOther2017Speaker-Versus Listener-Oriented Disfluency: A Re-examination of Arguments and Assumptions from Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with high-functioning autism produced more speech repairs, or restarts and corrections, than controls in a sentence-repetition task. Repetitions did not differ significantly, and filled pauses were too rare to analyse. This does not show that their speech is less helpful to listeners.
- SLPCohort2017The influence of parental concern on the utility of autism diagnostic instruments.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchADOS cutoffs identified autism consistently. ADI-R cutoffs missed 43% of toddlers diagnosed with autism when parents had not raised concern. A low ADI-R score should not rule out autism without direct observation and attention to parental concern.
- PTOTSLPQualitative2017How to Implement Robots in Interventions for Children with Autism? A Co-creation Study Involving People with Autism, Parents and Professionals.Journal of autism and developmental disordersProfessionals and stakeholders said robot KASPAR for children with autism should be matched to each child's plan, short, gradual, and embedded in practice. They described operation, voice, movement, setting, and training needs, not tested effects.
- PTOTSystematic Review2017Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for improving capacity in activities and arm function after stroke: a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationCathodal tDCS improved activities of daily living in stroke patients, but no tDCS type improved arm function. Safety profiles were similar across all stimulation types and controls. Clinicians should not expect tDCS to restore arm movement based on this evidence.
- OTSystematic Review2017Where have all the pilot studies gone? A follow-up on 30 years of pilot studies in Clinical Rehabilitation.Clinical rehabilitationOnly 12% of 191 pilot studies were followed by a full trial, and the most common stated purpose was estimating possible effects, not testing recruitment, outcomes or other practical issues.
- PTOTOther2017Lower Extremity Motor Impairments in Ambulatory Chronic Hemiparetic Stroke: Evidence for Lower Extremity Weakness and Abnormal Muscle and Joint Torque Coupling Patterns.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairParetic legs show preserved hip extension and adduction strength but weak abduction and flexion. During ankle push-off, the paretic leg involuntarily kicks the hip inward and extends the knee. This coupling may cause the body to collapse toward the affected side during balance challenges.
- Survey2017Provision of Genetic Services for Autism and its Impact on Spanish Families.Journal of autism and developmental disordersOnly 31% of families of children with autism spectrum disorders had visited a genetic service, despite 95% interest. 31% estimated recurrence risk at exactly 50%, and 18.5% estimated it higher than 50%, while being counseled by genetics professionals was associated with lower reported risk.
- PTCohort2017Comparison of the Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test with the Berg Balance Scale in relationship to walking speed and motor recovery post stroke.Topics in stroke rehabilitationThe Mini-BESTest separated slow from fast walkers better than the Berg Balance Scale in chronic stroke. A cut-off of 18.5 helped identify walkers at 0.8 m/s or faster.
- PTOther2017Reducing Circumduction and Hip Hiking During Hemiparetic Walking Through Targeted Assistance of the Paretic Limb Using a Soft Robotic Exosuit.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationWalking with a powered soft exosuit reduced paretic hip hiking by 27±6% and circumduction by 20±5% in eight people after stroke on a treadmill. This was an immediate effect, not proof of lasting benefit.
- PTOther2018Correlation of upper limb joint load withsimultaneous throwing mechanics including acceleration parameters in amateur baseball pitchers.Journal of physical therapy scienceBall acceleration was linked to higher shoulder torque and to higher elbow torque after maximum shoulder external rotation in 19 amateur pitchers; shoulder horizontal adduction speed was linked to higher elbow torque before that point. This did not test injury prevention.
- PTOTRCT2018Return to Work in Employees on Sick Leave due to Neck or Shoulder Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Multidisciplinary and Brief Intervention with One-Year Register-Based Follow-Up.Journal of occupational rehabilitationAdding a case manager and multidisciplinary team to a brief clinical examination did not improve return to work rates for employees on sick leave with neck or shoulder pain. Both groups had similar outcomes at one year, suggesting the brief intervention was sufficient.
- PTRCT2018Feasibility of a home-based exercise intervention with remote guidance for patients with stable grade II and III gliomas: a pilot randomized controlled trial.Clinical rehabilitationMost exercise participants completed a home exercise programme combining prescribed aerobic activity, patient choice, a heart-rate watch, weekly upload, and remote physiotherapist feedback. Average adherence was 79%, aerobic fitness improved by 6.0% from baseline, and no exercise-induced injuries occurred, but recruitment was poor.
- PTSurvey2018Factors affecting the extent of utilization of physiotherapy services by physicians in Saudi Arabia.Journal of physical therapy science92.6% of surveyed Saudi physicians were confident referring patients to physiotherapists, but 55.5% lacked enough service information and 55.3% thought physiotherapists lacked skills and knowledge. They wanted more detail about what physiotherapy can provide.
- PTPilot2018The effect of aroma stimulation during isotonic exercise on the rating of perceived exertion and blood fatigue factors of athletes with patellofemoral pain syndrome.Journal of physical therapy scienceAroma oil mixture lowered perceived effort after some leg exercises in 7 athletes with kneecap pain. One fatigue marker rose in the control group but not clearly in the aroma group. Other markers rose in both groups.
- PTOther2018Performance on a Clinical Quadriceps Activation Battery Is Related to a Laboratory Measure of Activation and Recovery After Total Knee Arthroplasty.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationPatients who scored low on a three-test quadriceps battery four days after knee replacement had poorer muscle activation, strength and walking or stair ability at one month. By three months the groups looked alike.
- Other2018Intervertebral Disc Degeneration in a Percutaneous Mouse Tail Injury Model.American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitationPuncturing mouse tail discs with a needle produced mild to moderate degeneration by 4 weeks, and Adam8 gene expression increased at all time points. This is an animal model, not human therapy.
- PTOTSLPRCT2018Effect of mirror use on lower extremity muscle strength of patients with chronic stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceLower-limb strengthening increased knee muscle strength in all three groups of chronic stroke patients. Adding a mirror to the exercise did not produce significantly greater strength gains than exercising without one.
- PTOther2018Partitioning ground reaction forces for multi-segment foot joint kinetics.Gait & postureFor estimating foot joint moments and powers from one force plate, adding a pressure mat gave more accurate midtarsal estimates than using center of pressure alone. Metatarsophalangeal joint moments were less accurate.
- PTCohort2018The relationship between age of onset and risk factors including family history and life style in Korean population with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Journal of physical therapy scienceKorean adults with type 2 diabetes and a family history were diagnosed younger. Current smoking and drinking were linked with younger diagnosis. Exercise was also linked with younger diagnosis, but it was measured after diagnosis.
- PTRCT2018Pharmacogenomic Variability of Oral Baclofen Clearance and Clinical Response in Children With Cerebral Palsy.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationA rare ABCC9 variant was associated with faster weight-adjusted baclofen clearance in 49 children with cerebral palsy, but not unadjusted clearance. Response findings were limited by tiny carrier numbers, so this is not a dosing guide.
- PTOTSLPCohort2018Relationship Between Gonadal Function and Cardiometabolic Risk in Young Men With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitationYoung men with chronic spinal cord injury and low testosterone had higher body fat, worse cholesterol, and more insulin resistance than those with normal levels. This links hormone deficiency to cardiometabolic risk, but does not prove low testosterone causes it.
- SLPCohort2018Gaze to faces across interactive contexts in infants at heightened risk for autism.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceGaze to an examiner during structured testing was associated with gaze to a parent during play at 9 and 12 months, not at 6 months. Infants with later ASD did not show the higher parent-play gaze seen in non-ASD siblings.
- PTPilot2018Immediate effects of a single session of robot-assisted gait training using Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) for cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 12 patients with cerebral palsy, one HAL gait session did not improve walking speed, stride length, or cadence immediately after. It increased single-leg support and stance-phase hip and knee extension angles, but walking during HAL was slower and shorter.
- Case-Control2017The Integration of Occlusion and Disparity Information for Judging Depth in Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersPeople with autism integrated depth cues as automatically as typically developing peers, contradicting theories of reduced sensory integration. However, they showed worse sensitivity to depth further away than fixation and slower reaction times, suggesting specific visual processing differences.
- SLPCohort2017Turning 1 Year of Age in a Low Socioeconomic Environment: A Portrait of Disadvantage.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPHealthy 1-year-old girls from low-income families scored lower on cognitive and language tests than higher-income peers, but most scores stayed average. This does not prove poverty caused delay.
- SLPCase-Control2017The Broader Autism Phenotype in Mothers is Associated with Increased Discordance Between Maternal-Reported and Clinician-Observed Instruments that Measure Child Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersMothers whose spouses or others rated them as having broader autism traits were more likely to report their child met autism screen or interview criteria when clinician observation did not. This was not true for every clinician comparison.
- PTPilot2017A brain-computer interface driven by imagining different force loads on a single hand: an online feasibility study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationEleven healthy people learned to control a brain-computer interface by imagining different grip strengths. They correctly selected high, low, or relaxed states with 70.9% accuracy. This proves the concept works in healthy users but provides no evidence for stroke patients.
- OTNarrative Review2017Development of a College Transition and Support Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersStudents with autism and their parents rated the STEPS college transition program helpful and likely to recommend it. These are early satisfaction reports, not evidence that the program improves college enrollment, graduation, or daily living.
- SLPCase-Control2017Vicarious Effort-Based Decision-Making in Autism Spectrum Disorders.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdolescents with autism made more effort choices for others than controls, but ignored reward size. They did not differ from controls when working for themselves. This suggests a specific issue with valuing rewards for other people.
- OTSLPSurvey2017A National Profile of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment Among US Children Aged 2 to 5 Years.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPParent surveys show 1.5% of US children aged 2 to 5 had ADHD, and 43.7% of those children took medication. Many had developmental, behavioral, or autism conditions, and 52.8% of children with special health care needs and ADHD had behavioral treatment.
- RCT2017Distance-Learning, ADHD Quality Improvement in Primary Care: A Cluster-Randomized Trial.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPDistance-learning quality improvement did not significantly increase parent and teacher ADHD rating scale use compared with control. Both groups improved after electronic survey access, and more engaged clinicians had higher scale use.
- OTSLPSurvey2017Are autistic traits associated with suicidality? A test of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide in a non-clinical young adult sample.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchHigher self-reported autistic traits were linked to more lifetime suicidal behavior in 163 young adults. The link ran through feeling like a burden on others and lacking social belonging. Ask about these feelings when assessing suicide risk.
- Other2017An Eye-Movement Study of relational Memory in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with autism looked less at previously studied object locations when asked to retrieve them, but were similar to comparison adults when choosing new locations. Eye-tracking may help test memory without requiring an overt response.
