- PTNarrative Review2017How to diagnose cervicogenic dizziness.Archives of physiotherapyCervicogenic dizziness is a diagnosis of exclusion requiring a stepwise process to rule out competing pathologies. True vertigo is rarely a symptom. Diagnosis relies on neck pain, dizziness linked to cervical movement, and excluding vestibular or arterial causes.
- OTRCT2018Randomized Controlled Trial of Adding Telephone Follow-Up to an Occupational Rehabilitation Program to Increase Work Participation.Journal of occupational rehabilitationAfter a 3½-week occupational rehabilitation program, adding 6 months of telephone ACT booster sessions to standard community follow-up helped more people on long-term sick leave work at least 1 day per week. The effect appeared after 6 months, not immediately.
- PTOther2018The relationship between anterior pelvic tilt and gait, balance in patient with chronic stroke.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 14 people with chronic stroke, greater forward pelvic tilt was linked to slower walking and shorter steps and strides. It was not linked to the balance tests measured. This is an association, not proof that correcting tilt changes gait.
- PTRCT2018The effect of actively induced vibration using shoulder joint on pain and dysfunction in patients with low back pain.Journal of physical therapy scienceAdding Flexi-Bar vibration exercises to standard physical therapy reduced pain and disability more than standard therapy alone in patients with chronic low back pain.
- SLPMeta-Analysis2018Figurative language comprehension in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: A meta-analytic review.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceIndividuals with ASD showed poorer figurative language comprehension than typically developing controls on average, but language-matched groups showed little difference. Metaphor differences were larger than irony or sarcasm.
- PTOTRCT2018Effects of 12-week lumbar stabilization exercise and sling exercise on lumbosacral region angle, lumbar muscle strength, and pain scale of patients with chronic low back pain.Journal of physical therapy scienceTwelve weeks of lumbar stabilization or sling exercises improved muscle strength, flexibility, and pain scores in adults with chronic low back pain. However, neither exercise changed spinal angles, so these programmes do not appear to correct structural alignment.
- PTSurvey2018Survey report on awareness and participation behavior in disabled sports and disability understanding after Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.Journal of physical therapy scienceMost of 220 respondents were not interested in watching, joining, or volunteering for disabled sports, and 76.8% reported no behavior change after Tokyo's bid. Many had never studied disability and felt unconfident about disability knowledge.
- PTOther2018Reliability analysis of the Korean version of the trunk control measurement scale in cerebral palsy.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 15 children with cerebral palsy, the Korean trunk control scale gave consistent scores on repeat testing and across four video raters, but some arm and trunk rotation items were less consistent.
- OTPilot2018Feasibility of electronic peer mentoring for transition-age youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Project Teens making Environment and Activity Modifications.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDTransition-age youth with intellectual disabilities can participate in electronic peer mentoring, but it requires heavy staffing. Mentors with disabilities achieved 87% of goals when supported by scripts and supervisors, yet the resource demands make this difficult for community clinics to adopt without university partnerships.
- PTOTRCT2018A randomized controlled trial of a modified wheelchair arm-support to reduce shoulder pain in stroke patients.Clinical rehabilitationStroke patients who used a modified wheelchair arm-support in addition to positioning, passive therapy, Western and Chinese medicine and ordinary wheelchair care had lower pain scores at 12 weeks, but not at 4 weeks. The support was not tested alone.
- PTRCT2018Effect of a Postpartum Training Program on the Prevalence of Diastasis Recti Abdominis in Postpartum Primiparous Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.Physical therapyA postpartum program combining pelvic floor, abdominal, back, arm, thigh, stretching and relaxation plus daily home pelvic floor training did not reduce diastasis recti prevalence compared with instruction and written information only at 6 or 12 months.
- PTOther2018Effect of limbering up of the muscles attached to the pelvis on the strength of upper and lower extremity and trunk muscles through the transitional network.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter one session and a 5-minute rest, exercising muscles attached to the pelvis raised some unexercised trunk, knee, or shoulder strength scores in healthy men. Many measures did not change, and the study did not test patients or lasting effects.
- PTOther2018Rethinking the foam cosmesis for people with lower limb absence.Prosthetics and orthotics internationalIn testing, four prototype cosmeses failed after over 1 million knee flexion cycles on average, versus 352,666 cycles for standard cosmeses. Six volunteers reported better shape match and knee movement, but small foam rips appeared where the zip joined the foam.
- OTCohort2018Parental sleep quality and behavior problems of children with autism.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceAcross 14 days, mothers' and fathers' previous-night sleep quality did not predict next-day behavior problems in their child with autism. Better sleep was associated with parents feeling more positive and less negative the next day.
- OTQualitative2018Improving the Health and Well-Being of Adults With Conditions of a Genetic Origin: Views from Professionals, Syndrome Support Groups and Parents.Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARIDProfessionals, support-group representatives and parents said genetic syndrome knowledge should guide proactive health checks and direct support staff awareness. They mostly wanted service changes, not cures. Parents of adults pointed to mental health as a barrier to independence.
- PTOther2018Rater reliability and construct validity of a mobile application for posture analysis.Journal of physical therapy scienceWith reflective markers and minimal clothing, the posture app gave consistent measurements between raters and detected expected head changes plus an unexpected shoulder shift in healthy young adults while they texted or called.
- OTMeta-Analysis2017Anxiety Disorders in Williams Syndrome Contrasted with Intellectual Disability and the General Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.Journal of autism and developmental disordersWilliams syndrome anxiety was common: 48% had at least one anxiety disorder, mostly phobias of noise and blood/injury. Rates exceeded intellectual disability and general population estimates. This reports how common anxiety was, not whether treatment works.
- SLPCohort2017Comorbidity prevalence, healthcare utilization, and expenditures of Medicaid enrolled adults with autism spectrum disorders.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceMedicaid adults with autism spectrum disorder had high psychiatric comorbidity, more outpatient visits, prescriptions, and spending, but less inpatient and emergency use than matched adults without autism.
- PTRCT2017Structural Connectivity Related to Persistent Symptoms After Mild TBI in Adolescents and Response to Aerobic Training: Preliminary Investigation. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationBrain network scans showed abnormal connectivity in adolescents with persistent post-concussion symptoms. After 6 to 8 weeks of aerobic training, global efficiency improved and correlated with symptom reduction, but there was no significant difference between the aerobic and stretching groups.
- PTOTSLPRCT2017Sertraline for Major Depression During the Year Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationSertraline did not improve depression scores more than placebo over 12 weeks after traumatic brain injury. Both groups got better. The only group difference was better information processing speed on a cognitive test for sertraline.
- OTSurvey2017Self-regulation and quality of life in high-functioning young adults with autism.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceYoung adults with high-functioning autism in higher education reported lower quality of life than peers. More daily executive-function problems, especially flexibility and self-monitoring, related to lower quality of life. This is association, not proof treatment works.
- SLPCohort2017Anxiety and Attentional Bias to Threat in Children at Increased Familial Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersSiblings of children with autism who themselves did not meet autism criteria were slower to orient to threatening pictures than positive pictures, and this pattern tracked parent-reported anxiety. Siblings who did meet autism criteria had higher anxiety but no such threat pattern.
- OTSLPSurvey2017Barriers to healthcare: Instrument development and comparison between autistic adults and adults with and without other disabilities.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceAutistic adults reported more healthcare barriers than adults with other disabilities or no disability. Anxiety, difficulty processing information quickly, cost, sensory discomfort in facilities, and trouble communicating with providers were especially common.
- SLPOther2017Examining the reinforcing value of stimuli within social and non-social contexts in children with and without high-functioning autism.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceBoys with high-functioning autism chose social activities with their mothers just as often as solitary ones, and worked just as hard to earn them. They did not show the reduced preference for social interaction seen in some other studies. The social context was familiar and individualized.
- OTOther2017The role of meaning in life: mediating the effects of perceived knowledge of stroke on depression and life satisfaction among stroke survivors.Clinical rehabilitationAmong 192 older stroke survivors, higher perceived knowledge of stroke was linked to fewer depressive symptoms and greater life satisfaction. Meaning in life appeared to carry this link. These were baseline data, so giving information was not shown to cause improvement.
- SLPPilot2017Towards a Treatment for Intolerance of Uncertainty in Young People with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Development of the Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (CUES©) Programme.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents rated this eight-week group programme as highly useful and satisfactory. While child anxiety measures showed only modest changes, parents reported significant improvements in their own stress and confidence. The study confirms feasibility and acceptability, not clinical efficacy.
- PTOther2018The reliability and validity of the Korean version of the lower limb functional index.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe Korean lower-limb questionnaire was stable when repeated after 7 days and related to two other questionnaires, one for lower-limb function and one for general health. It did not show whether scores can track treatment change, so use it cautiously for progress.
- SLPCase-Control2018What's the story? A computational analysis of narrative competence in autism.Autism : the international journal of research and practicePeople with autism told stories from emotional pictures that were less like the typical group's stories, used fewer complex sentences, and gave fewer reasons for characters' feelings, but still included basic story elements.
- PTOTOther2018The effects of a client-centered leisure activity program on satisfaction, self-esteem, and depression in elderly residents of a long-term care facility.Journal of physical therapy scienceResidents who received usual activities plus chosen individual leisure activities and elastic-band group exercise showed better performance and satisfaction, higher self-esteem, lower depression, and better upper-limb function. In the control group, upper-limb, self-esteem, and depression outcomes did not change significantly.
- PTOTOther2018Design and development of the first exoskeletal garment to enhance arm mobility for children with movement impairments.Assistive technology : the official journal of RESNAA soft exoskeletal garment was designed for one child with arthrogryposis to lift his arms. It cost $10 in materials and allowed 90-degree arm lift without blocking other shoulder movement. Parents found it easy to use but initially wanted it to look more like normal clothing.
- PTRCT2018Correlations between measurement time and different expansibility of the elastic tape on the rectus femoris and body sway index with plyometric exercise.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe amount of tape stretch during plyometric exercise did not track body sway. Measurement time did: sway path, sway area and sway speed were lower 24 hours after the tape was removed than before exercise or right after it.
- PTOTRCT2018Motivational Interviewing for Workers with Disabling Musculoskeletal Disorders: Results of a Cluster Randomized Control Trial.Journal of occupational rehabilitationAdding motivational interviewing to rehab helped workers without jobs return to work (21.6% vs 9.5%), but not those with jobs. The benefit depended on therapists actually using the technique correctly, which happened in only 26% of cases.
- PTOther2018Electrophysiological assessment of piano players' back extensor muscles on a regular piano bench and chair with back rest.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 10 healthy professional pianists, an adjusted chair with back rest lowered back extensor muscle activity and discomfort during five hours of piano playing compared with a regular piano bench.
- PTSurvey2018Comparison of sleep status among three Japanese national wheelchair basketball teams.Journal of physical therapy scienceJapanese wheelchair basketball players on the Top male and Top female teams reported poorer sleep than U23 male players, and Top female players reported shorter sleep. This was a questionnaire comparison, not a treatment test.
- PTOther2018Study on change of rat soleus extensibility caused by reduction in joint movement with unweighting of the hind limbs.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn rats, one week of hind-limb suspension plus ankle fixation caused greater ankle stiffness and soleus muscle resistance to stretching than fixation alone. This suggests adding unweighting to immobilization may worsen contracture, but it is not patient evidence.
- PTOther2018Side-to-side difference in dynamic unilateral balance ability and pitching performance in Japanese collegiate baseball pitchers.Journal of physical therapy scienceBalance on the pivot leg was better in the anteromedial reach direction, but neither leg's balance tracked with pitch speed or accuracy in 25 collegiate baseball pitchers. Do not expect single-leg balance tests to predict pitching performance.
- OTSLPCase-Control2018Relationship between physiological and parent-observed auditory over-responsiveness in children with typical development and those with autism spectrum disorders.Autism : the international journal of research and practiceChildren with autism blinked more strongly to sounds of 95 dB or lower and took longer to blink. These body responses were related to parent reports of sensory difficulties, but the study was small and did not test treatment.
- PTOther2018Changes in oxidative stress severity and antioxidant potential during muscle atrophy and reloading in mice.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn mice, muscle mass dropped with immobilization and recovered after 14 days of reloading. Antioxidant capacity fell to a borderline level during immobilization and one day after reloading, while oxidative stress stayed normal. This is an animal model, not human evidence.
- PTOther2018Effects of microcurrent and cryotherapy on C-reactive protein levels and muscle tone of patients with rotator cuff reconstruction.Journal of physical therapy scienceAfter rotator cuff repair, men receiving CPM plus cryotherapy had the greatest reduction in inflammation marker CRP and supraspinatus tone over two weeks. CPM and analgesics were given to all groups, so cryotherapy alone cannot be isolated.
- PTOther2018The tactile detection threshold changes when a visual stimulus is presented with a short temporal gap.Journal of physical therapy scienceAdding a visual cue 50 ms before a touch did not significantly improve detection of faint taps in healthy volunteers. The trend toward better sensitivity was not strong enough to change clinical practice.
- PTCase Report2018Non-surgical improvement of cervical lordosis is possible in advanced spinal osteoarthritis: a CBP® case report.Journal of physical therapy scienceA patient with cervical kyphosis and severe degenerative changes reported less neck pain and radiographic lordosis improvement after 30 chiropractic multimodal sessions over 18 weeks. This is a single case, not a pattern.
- Other2017Behavioral Clinical Trials in Moderate to Severe Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Challenges, Potential Solutions, and Lessons Learned. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitationThis commentary discusses the logistical and scientific hurdles of running behavioral trials for children with traumatic brain injury. It identifies problems like recruitment difficulties and insensitive outcome measures. It reports no new clinical outcomes or treatment efficacy.
- PTOther2017Crouch gait can be an effective form of forced-use/no constraint exercise for the paretic lower limb in stroke.International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptationWalking with knees bent at 25 degrees forced the weak leg to produce much more power than during normal walking. However, it did not significantly improve the balance of effort between the two legs at the ankle or knee, only at the hip.
- Other2017Autistic Traits and Symptoms of Social Anxiety are Differentially Related to Attention to Others' Eyes in Social Anxiety Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn adolescents with social anxiety, higher autistic traits predicted slower initial gaze toward eyes, while higher social anxiety predicted faster gaze aversion. This suggests autistic traits reduce social interest, whereas anxiety drives avoidance, offering distinct behavioral markers for these overlapping conditions.
- PTCase-Control2017Decreased Anticipatory Postural Adjustments During Gait Initiation Acutely Postconcussion.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationWithin 24 hours of concussion, student-athletes showed smaller preparatory shifts of body weight before stepping, especially backward and sideways. Their first step was also slower.
- OTSLPOther2017Diverse Profiles of Anxiety Related Disorders in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents reported anxiety profiles differed by syndrome: Cornelia de Lange had the broadest symptoms, especially separation and generalized anxiety; fragile X and Rubinstein-Taybi showed more selective patterns. Assess anxiety in intellectual disability with the syndrome in mind.
- SLPOther2017How Anxious Do You Think I Am? Relationship Between State and Trait Anxiety in Children With and Without ASD During Social Tasks.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdolescents with autism were rated by parents and themselves as more anxious on some questionnaires, but their body responses to a stressful social task were not higher than peers. Parent-reported anxiety was linked to lower body responses during stress.
- Qualitative2017Talking with young children about concussions: an exploratory study.Child: care, health and developmentChildren aged 6 to 8 described concussion as a head or brain injury, and named dizziness, vomiting or headache. Memory and mood symptoms were less often described. They saw rules and helmets as prevention. Parents were often mentioned.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Clinical and metabolic correlates of cerebral calcifications in Sturge-Weber syndrome.Developmental medicine and child neurologyBrain calcification volume in Sturge-Weber syndrome increased over time and correlated with lower IQ scores. Larger calcification was also linked to younger age at seizure onset, suggesting it may serve as an imaging marker for cognitive outcome in young children.
- PTRCT2017Robotic Resistance Treadmill Training Improves Locomotor Function in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationChildren receiving resistance treadmill training had larger gains in fast walking speed and six-minute walking distance than children receiving assistance. The study was small and assessors knew groups, so treat as preliminary.
