First cesarean rates were 30.2% for women with disabilities in 2010, compared with 17.9% for women without disabilities.
- SLPOther2017A Formant Range Profile for Singers.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationSingers could map their own vowel space with vocal-fry recordings, but the method did not produce a maximum vowel-space chart; the measured space varied widely.
- SLPOther2017Autism spectrum disorder in sub-saharan africa: A comprehensive scoping review.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchASD evidence in sub-Saharan Africa is thin and clinic-based. Intervention studies were too small to show whether any treatment works, and many tools were not tested in local languages and settings.
- SLPOther2017Corpus-Based Transitivity Biases in Individuals with Aphasia.AphasiologyPeople with aphasia use verbs in the expected transitive or intransitive ways, like controls. They also produce more intransitively biased verbs overall and make more errors when a verb's usual structure conflicts with the sentence.
- OTOther2017Association of Rigid-Compulsive Behavior with Functional Constipation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersIn children and adolescents with autism, those with functional constipation were rated by parents as having more rigid-compulsive behavior, especially rituals and sameness. The compulsive behavior link did not hold in medication-free or behavioral-medication subgroups.
- SLPOther2017Speech Adjustments for Room Acoustics and Their Effects on Vocal Effort.Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice FoundationPeople spoke longer in more reverberant rooms, but at a lower pitch. Loud speech raised pitch and voicing time, and both rose across tasks. Sound level change was the strongest predictor of reported vocal effort.
- SLPOther2017Measuring Theory of Mind in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Journal of autism and developmental disordersAdults with autism scored lower than matched controls on a new video test of understanding social interactions. The difference was seen only when groups were compared, and some adults with autism performed in the typical range, so it is not a diagnostic or severity marker.
- PTOther2017Principal component analysis for ataxic gait using a triaxial accelerometer.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA computer model of accelerometer data identified specific movement patterns in ataxic gait. Patients walked slower with shorter steps and swayed more side-to-side than controls. These patterns correlated with disease severity, offering a way to measure gait changes more precisely than clinical scales.
- PTOther2017Differences in muscle activity and temporal step parameters between Lokomat guided walking and treadmill walking in post-stroke hemiparetic patients and healthy walkers.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn 10 post-stroke patients, Lokomat guided walking at 50% guidance produced lower muscle activity than treadmill walking but made step timing more symmetrical. This was a lab comparison, not evidence of training benefit.

Training, hypoxia, coaching, and iron supplements were given together. Only three cases.
- SLPNarrative Review2017On the Etiology of Listening Difficulties in Noise Despite Clinically Normal Audiograms.Ear and hearingA normal audiogram does not rule out hidden cochlear or nerve damage, binaural processing deficits, or language and attention problems as causes of trouble hearing in noise. Test beyond the audiogram before assuming central auditory processing disorder.
- Cohort2017Rapid-Response Impulsivity Predicts Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology at 1-Year Follow-Up in Blast-Exposed Service Members.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationIn blast-exposed service members and veterans, more impulsive errors on a letter response task at baseline predicted higher depression and PTSD symptoms one year later, even after earlier symptom scores were considered. Alcohol use was not predicted.

- SLPOther2017The Relationship Between Baseline Volume in Temporal Areas and Post-Treatment Naming Accuracy in Primary Progressive Aphasia.AphasiologyPre-treatment temporal lobe volume was not linked to naming accuracy after anomia treatment for trained words. Both phonological and orthographic treatment produced better naming for practiced words than unpracticed words, but this study does not support using scan volume alone to guide treatment choice.
- SLPOther2017Using Neural Response Telemetry to Monitor Physiological Responses to Acoustic Stimulation in Hybrid Cochlear Implant Users.Ear and hearingCochlear implant telemetry can record acoustic responses from an electrode inside the cochlea in Hybrid cochlear implant users. The recorded thresholds tracked measured hearing, and responses changed when hearing declined. The method is time consuming and separates hair cell and nerve signals only partially.
- PTCase Report2017Effect of pain scrambler therapy on antineuralgic pain and quality of life after shingles.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn one woman with pain after shingles, 10 daily 40-minute pain scrambler sessions were followed by pain dropping from 7 to 1 on a 10-point scale and a quality-of-life score rising by 128 points, higher is better. Single case, not proof.
- SLPCohort2017Childhood predictors of written expression in late adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: a longitudinal study.Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDRYouth with 22q11DS had written expression scores far below average. Girls with 22q11DS scored higher than boys. Childhood verbal IQ, executive function, and language predicted later writing; verbal IQ decline did not.
- PTOTNarrative Review2017Consideration of Dose and Timing When Applying Interventions After Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTFor upper limb stroke rehabilitation, more repetitions did not clearly improve function, and measured gains did not translate into daily use. Walking after stroke and incomplete spinal cord injury may respond to intensive therapy, but timing and inflammation matter.
- SLPOther2017Individual differences in language and working memory affect children's speech recognition in noise.International journal of audiologyIn children with normal hearing, higher working memory was associated with better speech recognition in noise across all stimuli. Higher vocabulary was associated with better recognition only for sentences and word sequences, not isolated words, so interpret poor scores cautiously.
- SLPOther2017Validating the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) for use with people with aphasia: an analysis of Differential Item Function (DIF).AphasiologyThe CPIB appears usable with people with aphasia without needing different scoring, but family proxy ratings do not match self-report. Clinicians may need to provide communication support.
- SLPOther2017Daily Couple Experiences and Parent Affect in Families of Children with Versus Without Autism.Journal of autism and developmental disordersParents of children with autism reported less daily time with their partner and fewer positive couple interactions. Fathers felt less close. Partner support and negative interactions did not differ. They also began the diary with lower positive and higher negative affect.
- SLPCohort2017Response to changing contingencies in infants at high and low risk for autism spectrum disorder.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAt 10 months, high-risk infants shook a silent rattle less at first than low-risk infants, showing weaker expectation that shaking will make sound. They learned the sounding-rattle contingency at a similar rate, so this is not a simple learning deficit.
- PTOTPilot2017A Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) and robot hybrid system for multi-joint coordinated upper limb rehabilitation after stroke.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationAfter 20 sessions with a muscle-signal-controlled robot and electrical stimulation device, 11 people after chronic stroke improved upper-limb function scores and tracking accuracy. No control group means the combined intervention cannot be attributed to one component.
- Other2017Adjacent regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces produce phase-antagonist signals during voluntary walking in rats.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn four rats, adjacent regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces produced alternating signals during walking. Signals matched intact muscles except the peroneal nerve signal during stance.
- PTRCT2017Effect of a 4-week balance exercise with medio-lateral unstable sole on ankle joint functional ability.Journal of physical therapy scienceFour weeks of home balance exercises wearing unstable sandals produced no significant improvement in ankle muscle activity or dynamic balance in healthy adults. The intervention failed to change peroneus longus or brevis activation, nor did it improve Star Excursion Balance Test scores.
- SLPCohort2017Neural circuitry at age 6 months associated with later repetitive behavior and sensory responsiveness in autism.Molecular autismIn infants later diagnosed with autism, brain wiring at six months predicted repetitive behaviors and sensory responses at age two. Higher white matter integrity was linked to more severe symptoms. This association was specific to these behaviors and not seen in unaffected siblings.
- PTOTNarrative Review2017Activity-Based Therapy: From Basic Science to Clinical Application for Recovery After Spinal Cord Injury.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTIntense, task-specific movement below the spinal cord injury is the core of activity-based therapy. The review also describes a movement-quality scale and three children with chronic SCI reported to change following locomotor training.
- SLPOther2017Are we slipping them through the cracks? The insufficiency of norm-referenced assessments for identifying language weaknesses in children with hearing loss.Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groupsStandard test scores did not flag language weakness in 13 preschoolers with hearing loss, but spontaneous language samples showed fewer different words and more omissions than matched peers. Use language samples before deciding services.
- PTOther2017Characterization of Volitional Electromyographic Signals in the Lower Extremity After Motor Complete Spinal Cord Injury.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairPeople with motor-complete cervical spinal cord injury often produced small intentional electrical signals in lower-leg muscles despite no visible movement. Signal quality varied, but some signals may be useful for future neuroprosthetic control.
- SLPOther2017Short-Term and Working Memory Treatments for Improving Sentence Comprehension in Aphasia: A Review and a Replication Study.Seminars in speech and languageIn five people with chronic aphasia, computerised short-term memory training showed no clear gain in sentence comprehension. Across reviewed studies, four of 11 people showed some gain, so evidence remains limited.
- Survey2017Live birth, miscarriage, and abortion among U.S. women with and without disabilities.Disability and health journalAmong U.S. women who became pregnant, women with disabilities had similar chances of live birth after accounting for age, marital status, Hispanic ethnicity, and health. Women with complex activity limitations were somewhat more likely to report miscarriage, but other factors explained much of it.
- OTOther2017Supplemental vibrotactile feedback control of stabilization and reaching actions of the arm using limb state and position error encodings.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn healthy adults, vibration on the opposite arm reduced hand drift and improved reaching without vision. After training, feedback about target error helped reaching more than feedback about hand position and speed. This is not evidence for stroke therapy.
- SLPCohort2017Shorter sleep duration is associated with social impairment and comorbidities in ASD.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchIn 2,714 children with autism spectrum disorder, shorter parent-reported sleep was associated with more severe social impairment, repetitive behaviors, lower IQ, and more ADD, depressive disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder reports. It does not show that sleep causes symptoms or that treating sleep improves them.
- PTNarrative Review2017Single-Case Design, Analysis, and Quality Assessment for Intervention Research.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTNo patient-care finding is available here. The article reviews single-case study designs and analysis tools, not intervention outcomes.
- Other2017Etiological influences on the stability of autistic traits from childhood to early adulthood: evidence from a twin study.Molecular autismAutistic traits measured by parent report in childhood and early adulthood showed moderate stability, with 85% of this consistency attributable to genetic factors. However, genetic overlap was partial, indicating that some distinct genetic influences emerge in young adulthood.
- Other2017Binocular rivalry in children on the autism spectrum.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchAutistic and typical children switched between pictures shown to each eye at a similar rate, but autistic children reported fewer blended views.
- SLPCohort2017Some Neurocognitive Correlates of Noise-Vocoded Speech Perception in Children With Normal Hearing: A Replication and Extension of ).Ear and hearingChildren with normal hearing who have better auditory attention and verbal short-term memory recognize spectrally degraded speech more accurately. This suggests that cognitive skills, not just hearing, drive speech perception when the signal is poor.
- PTOther2017Reducing the metabolic cost of walking with an ankle exoskeleton: interaction between actuation timing and power.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA tethered ankle exoskeleton reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 12.3% compared to normal walking when actuation started at 42% of the stride and power was 0.42 W/kg. Lower power levels were more energy-efficient, though the device itself added a 11.6% penalty when inactive.
- PTNarrative Review2017From Disease to Health: Physical Therapy Health Promotion Practices for Secondary Prevention in Adult and Pediatric Neurologic Populations.Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPTThis narrative review proposes health promotion models for physical therapy in neurologic populations. It reports no original methods or results, so there is no single study finding to act on.
- SLPOther2017Effects of Stimulus Polarity and Artifact Reduction Method on the Electrically Evoked Compound Action Potential.Ear and hearingCochlear implant nerve response measurements changed with the artifact-reduction method. The anodic forward-masking method gave fastest timing and largest response size, while alternating polarity gave higher thresholds. Advanced Bionics ears showed no size, slope or threshold differences.
- PTOther2017Distinguishing between nociceptive and neuropathic components in chronic low back pain using behavioural evaluation and sensory examination.Musculoskeletal science & practiceTwo-point discrimination did not separate chronic low back pain patients with higher and lower PainDETECT scores. Higher score patients reported worse pain, lower quality of life and more distress, and needed stronger touch. This can guide assessment, not prove a treatment works.
- PTOther2017Effectiveness of physical activity as primary preventive care for lower urinary tract symptoms in elderly people through the "Muscle Enhancing Club".Journal of physical therapy scienceMost urinary symptom scores did not change after a 12-week exercise class. Quality-of-life score changed by -0.27 points on a 1-6 scale; women had some changes, and some scores changed among participants with existing symptoms.
