- SLPSurvey2016Practices and views of audiologists regarding aural rehabilitation services for adults with acquired hearing loss. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir KommunikasieafwykingsSouth African audiologists and speech therapists reported strong interest in aural rehabilitation but mostly provided hearing aids, communication strategies and informational counselling. Training gaps and client barriers were reported.
- PTRCT2017Effect of diaphragm breathing exercise applied on the basis of overload principle.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 35 healthy adults, therapist-guided and self-practised diaphragm breathing with Borg 11-13 resistance improved several breathing measures after four weeks. The study found a method difference in FVC and FEV1, but no people with cardiopulmonary disorder were studied.
- OTMeta-Analysis2017Planning Skills in Autism Spectrum Disorder Across the Lifespan: A Meta-analysis and Meta-regression.Journal of autism and developmental disordersPeople with autism spectrum disorder performed worse on planning tasks than typically developing people, across 50 studies. The difficulty did not vary clearly by age, task format, or intelligence. Missing studies may mean the gap is smaller.
- PTOther2017Can blood pressure be measured during exercise with an automated sphygmomanometer based on an oscillometric method?Journal of physical therapy scienceThis cuff device measured blood pressure accurately only at rest. It failed during walking and gave only 65.0% accurate readings on the bicycle, so physical therapists need another method for exercise monitoring.
- SLPOther2017What can 35 years and over 700,000 measurements tell us about noise exposure in the mining industry?International journal of audiologyUS mine noise measurements fell after the 2000 MSHA rule, by 4.5 dBA on average. Reductions were uneven, and underground coal and metal mines still had many measurements above limits.
- PTOther2017Availability of the Two-step Test to evaluate balance in frail people in a day care service.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 11 frail day care users, a short two-step measure went along with Timed Up and Go and one-leg standing time. It may help screen balance when heavier tests are too demanding.
- PTOther2017Effects of pulling direction on upper trapezius and rhomboid muscle activity.Journal of physical therapy sciencePulling a band with the arm at 120° shoulder flexion produced higher rhomboid activity and lower upper trapezius activity than at 60° in 15 healthy men. This describes muscle activation, not patient outcomes.
- PTOTSystematic Review2017Interactive wearable systems for upper body rehabilitation: a systematic review.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationMost included wearable upper-body rehab systems track motion and give visual feedback, but only three had clinical trials. Do not assume they improve movement or function; evidence is still mainly technical and usability.
- PTOther2017Validity of the Instrumented Push and Release Test to Quantify Postural Responses in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationWireless sensors on the lower back and feet closely matched laboratory motion capture and force plate measurements during Push and Release balance steps in people with MS and healthy controls. People with MS needed more steps and longer time to regain stability.
- SLPSurvey2017Lifetime prevalence of traumatic brain injury in a demographically diverse community sample.Brain injuryIn 2881 Baltimore adults, men were more likely to report lifetime TBI. Age patterns differed by race and income: young low-income White adults and older low-income African-American adults had higher self-reported prevalence.
- PTMeta-Analysis2017Robot-assisted gait training (Lokomat) improves walking function and activity in people with spinal cord injury: a systematic review.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn incomplete spinal cord injury, walking speed did not improve with Lokomat training compared with overground training in people assessed within six months, but walking distance did. In chronic injury, speed improved versus no intervention, while distance did not.
- OTRCT2017The effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on depression, visual perception, and activities of daily living in stroke patients.Journal of physical therapy scienceThe rTMS group had lower depression scores and higher visual perception and ADL scores over 4 weeks, but the control group also improved by week 8. All 44 stroke patients with unilateral neglect also received conventional rehabilitation, so rTMS was not shown to work alone.
- PTRCT2017Immediate effects of ankle eversion taping on dynamic and static balance of chronic stroke patients with foot drop.Journal of physical therapy scienceFor people with chronic stroke and foot drop, ankle eversion taping immediately improved balance compared with placebo taping or no taping. The effect was only immediate.
- PTOther2017Comparison of the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles isolation ratios during the sit-to-stand movement in elderly people.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 10 elderly women, tibialis anterior contributed more than soleus before the thighs left the chair during sit-to-stand. After thigh-off, contributions were similar. This is a muscle activation comparison, not evidence of fall prevention.
- PTSLPCohort2017Infant muscle tone and childhood autistic traits: A longitudinal study in the general population.Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism ResearchLow muscle tone in infancy was linked to more parent-reported autistic traits at age 6. High muscle tone was not. This was a population study, so it is not a diagnostic sign.
- PTCohort2017Instrumented gait analysis: a measure of gait improvement by a wheeled walker in hospitalized geriatric patients.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationHospitalized older adults walked faster and took longer strides with a wheeled walker than without, including first-time users. The study measured gait parameters only, not falls or independence.
- SLPOther2017Over-Selectivity is Related to Autism Quotient and Empathizing, But not to Systematizing.Journal of autism and developmental disordersHigher autistic-trait scores and lower empathy scores were linked to over-selectivity in 80 nonclinical adults. Over-selectivity means responding to one cue rather than several. Systemizing scores were not linked. No treatment effect was tested.
- PTOther2017Effect of sleep posture on neck muscle activity.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn healthy young adults, lying on the back with the dominant hand on the forehead raised right trapezius and scalene muscle activity versus hands at side. Left-side muscles did not differ. This is muscle activity, not proven pain reduction.
- PTOther2017Bacterial contamination in physical therapy departments in the State of Kuwait.Journal of physical therapy scienceSponges used for interferential and electrical stimulation therapy were heavily contaminated with bacteria, including pathogens like Acinetobacter baumannii. Water in hot pack units was also frequently dirty. This suggests equipment may spread infection between patients if disinfection protocols are not strictly followed.
- PTOther2017Use of Nintendo Wii Balance Board for posturographic analysis of Multiple Sclerosis patients with minimal balance impairment.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationA Wii Balance Board showed the same balance differences between people with MS and healthy controls as a laboratory force plate, but it overestimated absolute sway-path scores. Use it for comparisons with the same board, not exact scores.
- SLPRCT2017Impact of Compliance on Dysphagia Rehabilitation in Head and Neck Cancer Patients: Results from a Multi-center Clinical Trial.DysphagiaIn head and neck cancer patients after radiation, electrical stimulation did not improve swallowing beyond the same stretch and swallow exercise program. Among the most compliant patients, active stimulation had worse PAS scores than sham, and doing more sessions did not improve outcomes.
- SLPNarrative Review2017Linking language and categorization in infancy.Journal of child languageAcross infancy, infants formed object categories while hearing human language, but not while hearing tones or backward speech. Early on the effect was broad, including lemur calls, then narrowed to speech and specific word types.
- OTSLPCase Report2017Developmental Regression, Depression, and Psychosocial Stress in an Adolescent with Down Syndrome.Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBPIn an adolescent with Down syndrome and intellectual disability, function improved after antidepressant treatment, CPAP for sleep apnea, and school environment change. No single component can be credited.
- PTOTRCT2017Competitive and cooperative arm rehabilitation games played by a patient and unimpaired person: effects on motivation and exercise intensity.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationCompeting with an unimpaired person raised arm movement speed. It also raised enjoyment mainly in patients who liked competition. Cooperating did not raise movement speed. Competition was not more stressful than exercising alone.
- SLPOther2016A Profiling System for the Assessment of Individual Needs for Rehabilitation With Hearing Aids.Trends in hearingEight audiologists sorted 533 patient hearing-aid goals into five useful categories: detection, speech in quiet, speech in noise, localization, and noise tolerance. Focus or discrimination did not work, and about 11% did not fit.
- SLPOther2016Perception of Sung Speech in Bimodal Cochlear Implant Users.Trends in hearingFor bimodal CI users, sung speech was much harder to understand than spoken speech, but varying pitch did not worsen it. Adding the hearing aid improved speech. Melodic pitch fell sharply when different words were sung across notes.
- SLPOther2017Pre-pharyngeal Swallow Effects of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion on Bolus Shape and Airway Protection in an Infant Pig Model.DysphagiaIn infant pigs whose recurrent laryngeal nerve was injured, swallows that protected the airway had smaller boluses before swallowing. Bolus shape differed by pig and injury. The authors suggest testing controlled milk volume in future human work.
- PTOther2017Lower trunk muscle activity-induced alignment and cop position during single-leg standing.Journal of physical therapy scienceContracting lower trunk muscles by exhaling and pulling in the abdomen allowed participants to lift their leg higher and step further forward than other contraction types. This specific alignment may help reduce cross-stepping in throwing motions, though this was tested in healthy adults, not pitchers.
- SLPOther2017Developing Autism Screening Criteria for the Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA).Journal of autism and developmental disordersBITSEA ASD-Competence score 11.5 or less flagged 91% of toddlers with ASD and 80% of toddlers without ASD; the 59 false positives, as a group, had lower language and developmental scores.
- SLPQualitative2017Identifying mechanisms of change in a conversation therapy for aphasia using behaviour change theory and qualitative methods.International journal of language & communication disordersConversation partners and people with aphasia described several ways conversation therapy may change behaviour. Awareness alone was not enough; partners also judged the impact of their behaviour, replaced barriers with facilitators, and shifted priorities from accuracy to communication.
- SLPOther2017Spectral analysis of hearing protector impulsive insertion loss.International journal of audiologyFor hearing protectors tested, peak reduction varied with the impulse source, but frequency-based attenuation agreed across methods. Frequency-based attenuation described protector performance more completely than peak reduction.

- SLPOther2017Emotion Understanding in Preschool Children with Mild-to-Severe Hearing Loss.Journal of deaf studies and deaf educationPreschool children with mild-to-severe hearing loss and hearing aids scored similarly to typically hearing children on emotion understanding, despite lower vocabulary scores. Parents of children with hearing aids estimated their child's level more accurately, although both groups overestimated it.
- PTOTOther2017Nonlinear mixed-effects model reveals a distinction between learning and performance in intensive reach training post-stroke.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationDuring intensive reach training after stroke, movement slowing can hide learning. In 16 people, a method that separated learning from fatigue-like worsening predicted one-month reach gains, while total performance change did not.
- PTOther2017The effects of changes in support and inclined boards on lower-extremity muscle activity.Journal of physical therapy scienceDuring standing knee-extension contractions, the unstable 20-degree inclined board produced the highest quadriceps activity in 15 healthy young men. It also raised calf and front-of-shin activity compared with flat stable support. This is muscle activation, not a patient outcome.
- PTOTSLPCohort2017Trajectories of Functional Change After Inpatient Rehabilitation for Traumatic Brain Injury.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationMost TBI patients improved after inpatient rehab, but 8% stayed low and gained little. Older age was linked to a lower motor group, while Black or Hispanic ethnicity and longer wait were linked to lower groups. This flags prognosis, not proof of treatment.
- PTOTOther2017Stroke Lesions in a Large Upper Limb Rehabilitation Trial Cohort Rarely Match Lesions in Common Preclinical Models.Neurorehabilitation and neural repairICARE did not show a difference in its main motor outcome between rehabilitation groups. The analyzed strokes were small, and common cortical models captured 16% of participants; a subcortical model captured 33%.
- Other2017Possible sexually dimorphic role of miRNA and other sncRNA in ASD brain.Molecular autismIn postmortem temporal cortex from 10 ASD and 8 control donors, female ASD brains showed more altered small noncoding RNAs than male ASD brains, compared with same-sex controls. The differences were regional and pointed toward immune and nervous system pathways.
- PTCohort2017Association of Neuromuscular Attributes With Performance-Based Mobility Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults With Symptomatic Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationIn older adults with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis, trunk extensor endurance, leg strength, leg strength asymmetry, and knee range-of-motion problems were linked to poorer walking and chair-rise performance.
- PTRCT2017The effects of dynamic exercise using the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern on posture in healthy adults.Journal of physical therapy scienceDynamic PNF-pattern trunk exercises, performed with abdominal drawing-in, changed some trunk and pelvic posture measurements in healthy students. The control group did not show these changes.

- PTOther2017Quantification of walking-based physical activity and sedentary time in individuals with Rett syndrome.Developmental medicine and child neurologyGirls and women with Rett syndrome who could walk spent an average of 62% of waking hours sedentary. Older age, needing walking help, and frequent seizures were linked to fewer steps.
- SLPCohort2017Umbilical cord blood androgen levels and ASD-related phenotypes at 12 and 36 months in an enriched risk cohort study.Molecular autismIn 137 high-risk infants, cord testosterone and related androgens were not associated with 12-month autism traits or 36-month social impairment scores. A small subgroup finding in 22 infants with a female older affected sibling was imprecise.
- OTSLPRCT2017Problem-Solving After Traumatic Brain Injury in Adolescence: Associations With Functional Outcomes.Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitationMaladaptive problem-solving style was associated with worse everyday functioning and self-reported impairment in adolescents after TBI. Severe and moderate TBI did not differ on problem-solving measures. The total problem-solving score was higher despite lower rational problem-solving.
- PTOther2017The effect of the push-up plus on shoulder muscle activation while using a sling with a pulley.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 15 healthy adults, balance-ball push-up plus showed the highest serratus anterior activity (64.9% of the three-muscle total) and lowest pectoralis major activity (24.5%). Sling and pulley-sling versions showed the opposite pattern. Left-right asymmetry did not differ.
- PTOTRCT2017Rehabilitation of hand function after spinal cord injury using a novel handgrip device: a pilot study.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationGrip strength and independence scores did not show clear improvement, but task accuracy rose from 9.01% to 21.7%. Their prosociality appeared stable and was linked to better social outcomes.
- PTOther2017Preserved gait kinematics during controlled body unloading.Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitationIn 19 healthy walkers, unloading up to 50% changed walking timing, ankle motion, and leg muscle activity, while hip and knee motion stayed close to normal walking.
- SLPSystematic Review2017Everyday conversation in dementia: a review of the literature to inform research and practice.International journal of language & communication disordersPeople with dementia can keep turn-taking, formulaic phrases and storytelling skills, but their conversation depends heavily on how partners scaffold it. Generic advice may miss individual needs, especially in rarer dementias.
- PTOther2017Short-term effect of spiral taping on the pain and walking performance of individuals with chronic ankle instability.Journal of physical therapy scienceIn 25 participants with chronic ankle instability, after spiral taping, pain during walking was lower and Timed Up and Go times were shorter 30 minutes later. There was no control group, so this is a short-term change, not proof the tape caused it.
