PT Pilot 2017 A muscle-driven approach to restore stepping with an exoskeleton for individuals with paraplegia. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Three men with motor complete spinal cord injury walked a lab walkway without prior practice using a new muscle-driven exoskeleton, but speeds were 0.03 to 0.06 m/s and Subjects B and C had poor knee flexion or foot drag. PT Other 2017 Low to moderate relationships between gait and postural responses in Parkinson disease. Journal of rehabilitation medicine In 111 people with Parkinson disease, walking speed and step length were related to reactive balance, but not strongly. Test reactive balance separately. PT RCT 2017 The effect of motor imagery training for trunk movements on trunk muscle control and proprioception in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke patients who spent 10 minutes imagining trunk movements plus 20 minutes on trunk training showed larger gains in trunk muscle activity and position sense than 30 minutes of trunk training alone. With only 12 patients, this suggests a possible combination, not proof it works. PT OT Qualitative 2016 How Therapists Use Visualizations of Upper Limb Movement Information From Stroke Patients: A Qualitative Study With Simulated Information. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Therapists saw simulated arm-movement dashboards as useful for checking home activity, exercise, and neglect, engaging patients, and advocating for resources. They also said the data lacked context needed to tell whether movements were exercises, daily tasks, or compensations. PT RCT 2017 The role of virtual reality in improving motor performance as revealed by EEG: a randomized clinical trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In 24 stroke survivors, adding a virtual avatar game to robot-assisted gait training was linked to greater mobility gains and brain activation than simple feedback. Both groups received body-weight support, leg guidance and foot-lifting straps, so VR alone cannot be credited. PT Case Report 2017 Effects of physiotherapy treatment for urinary incontinence in patient with multiple sclerosis. Journal of physical therapy science In one woman with multiple sclerosis and mixed urinary incontinence, leakage and quality-of-life scores improved after a combined programme of pelvic-floor electrical stimulation, active pelvic-floor exercises, tibial-nerve stimulation, home exercises and behavioral rehabilitation. No comparison was done, so the package cannot be separated. PT Case Report 2017 Effects of aquatic walking exercise using a walker in a chronic stroke patient. Journal of physical therapy science A chronic stroke patient walked farther in water and on land after water walking, land walking, and a walker. Satisfaction improved in the caregiver questionnaire. This single case cannot separate the components or prove the method works. PT RCT 2017 Effects of unilateral real-time biofeedback on propulsive forces during gait. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Seven able-bodied walkers on a treadmill increased push-off force in the leg receiving real-time feedback, and could reproduce it after breaks. The other leg did not change, so feedback may target one side. PT Pilot 2017 Using Xbox kinect motion capture technology to improve clinical rehabilitation outcomes for balance and cardiovascular health in an individual with chronic TBI. Archives of physiotherapy In one veteran with chronic severe TBI, Kinect games improved dynamic gait balance, but static balance measures were unchanged. He reached target heart rates during sessions, although target time and end-game heart rate decreased over time. PT Pilot 2016 A Personalized Self-Management Rehabilitation System for Stroke Survivors: A Quantitative Gait Analysis Using a Smart Insole. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Stroke survivors using a smart insole at home showed better heel strikes on the affected side and faster walking, but worse heel strikes on the other side and worse symmetry. The pattern suggests compensation, not proof of recovery. PT Case-Control 2017 Locomotor circumvention strategies are altered by stroke: I. Obstacle clearance. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation People with chronic stroke and healthy people kept larger clearance from moving obstacles while walking or using a joystick, but some stroke walkers got closer at crossing and collided. Those with poorer walking and balance confidence tended to veer toward the obstacle side. PT OT Case-Control 2017 Abnormal EEG Responses to TMS During the Cortical Silent Period Are Associated With Hand Function in Chronic Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair In chronic stroke, brain stimulation with brain-wave recording during active thumb contraction showed abnormal brain responses and a longer pause in muscle activity than controls. Hand-function links were tentative and not confirmed. PT Other 2017 Reactive stepping with functional neuromuscular stimulation in response to forward-directed perturbations. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In one person with motor complete T4 paraplegia, implanted stimulation triggered a protective forward step after pulls above 10% body weight, but standing still required hand support and fall risk remained. PT Other 2017 Locomotor circumvention strategies are altered by stroke: II. Postural Coordination. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Stroke survivors often used side steps, especially for moving obstacles, and showed larger body rotations and, for some obstacles, later reorientation than controls. Their strategy varied with obstacle movement and their walking speed, balance confidence and motor ability. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2017 Markerless motion capture systems as training device in neurological rehabilitation: a systematic review of their use, application, target population and efficacy. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Most markerless motion capture rehab studies used Kinect in stroke, training upper or lower limbs. Patients improved on balance or arm tests, but few trials, low quality and varied protocols mean efficacy is not proven. PT RCT 2017 The effects of aroma massage and foot bath on psychophysiological response in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke patients who received general physical therapy plus back massage with essential oils and foot bath had less stress, better mood, higher body temperature and sleep satisfaction than those receiving general therapy alone. The added package's individual parts cannot be separated. PT Pilot 2017 Results of the first interim analysis of the RAPPER II trial in patients with spinal cord injury: ambulation and functional exercise programs in the REX powered walking aid. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In the first 20 people with spinal cord injury, a single supervised REX exoskeleton session was feasible: all transferred in, 19 did upright upper-body exercises, and no device-related adverse events occurred. PT Cohort 2017 Longitudinal estimation of intramuscular Tibialis Anterior coherence during subacute spinal cord injury: relationship with neurophysiological, functional and clinical outcome measures. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A high-frequency muscle signal pattern increased in 20 people with incomplete spinal cord injury during subacute recovery, while brain-to-muscle pathway measures did not change. This is an experimental marker, not a clinical test. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2017 Needs of Stroke Survivors as Perceived by Their Caregivers: A Scoping Review. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Caregivers most often reported environmental needs, especially support, services, safety and accessibility, after discharge. They also noted psychosocial, physical, cognitive and speech needs. This review maps those needs. It does not test whether meeting them improves outcomes. PT OT Other 2017 KAPS (kinematic assessment of passive stretch): a tool to assess elbow flexor and extensor spasticity after stroke using a robotic exoskeleton. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A robotic elbow stretch test found abnormal movement responses in people after stroke, including some without clinical spasticity. It may reveal resistance missed by Ashworth and Tardieu scores, but it is not yet a routine clinical tool. PT Other 2017 Frontal brain activation changes due to dual-tasking under partial body weight support conditions in older adults with multiple sclerosis. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Partial body weight support in a single session increased frontal brain activity during walking and talking. Walking speed was not shown to improve, and walking while talking became more demanding with support. PT OT Other 2017 The Arm Movement Detection (AMD) test: a fast robotic test of proprioceptive acuity in the arm. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A robotic test that took about twelve minutes separated stroke survivors with impaired arm position sense from those without. It also detected age-related changes in movement detection threshold, but it did not test treatment benefit. PT Other 2017 The Next Step in Understanding Impaired Reactive Balance Control in People With Stroke: The Role of Defective Early Automatic Postural Responses. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair People with chronic stroke had impaired reactive stepping, especially sideways, and delayed and smaller paretic hip abductor responses. Their feet-in-place balance capacity was similar to controls. PT RCT 2017 Effects of sling exercise on postural sway in post-stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Post-stroke patients who added six weeks of sling exercise to usual rehabilitation showed improvement in standing sway measures compared with those doing conventional cycling or gait training plus usual rehabilitation. The study was small, and total exercise time was not controlled. PT Cohort 2017 Topographical measures of functional connectivity as biomarkers for post-stroke motor recovery. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In chronic stroke survivors, EEG beta-band network measures were associated with upper-limb recovery only after a selected threshold. The study is exploratory, not tested for clinical use. PT RCT 2017 Can Lokomat therapy with children and adolescents be improved? An adaptive clinical pilot trial comparing Guidance force, Path control, and FreeD. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In adolescents using Lokomat gait training, Path Control increased some leg muscle activity, but fewer walked physiologically than with Guidance Force. FreeD produced the least physiological therapist-rated patterns and some discomfort. PT Pilot 2017 A decision support system for electrode shaping in multi-pad FES foot drop correction. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Top-ranked pads suggested by an electrical stimulation system for foot drop were used in over 95% of patterns, and voluntary ankle movement increased over 20 sessions in 10 stroke patients, but there was no control group. PT OT Cohort 2017 "Long-term stability of stimulating spiral nerve cuff electrodes on human peripheral nerves". Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In people with implanted spiral nerve cuff electrodes, most stimulation contacts still produced motor or sensory responses, and stimulation settings changed little over 5 to 11 years. PT RCT 2017 Task-Specific and Functional Effects of Speed-Focused Elliptical or Motor-Assisted Cycle Training in Children With Bilateral Cerebral Palsy: Randomized Clinical Trial. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Walking speed did not improve in children with bilateral cerebral palsy after speed-focused elliptical or cycle training. They moved faster on the device they trained on, but not on the other device. PT Other 2017 The motor repertoire in 3- to 5-month old infants with Down syndrome. Research in developmental disabilities Most infants with Down syndrome had abnormal fidgety movements and reduced movement quality. Their movement quality was lower than typical infants but higher than infants later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. PT Other 2017 Key function for obstacle crossing in hemiplegic persons with varied degrees of spasticity. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke patients with hemiplegia who could not isolate leg movement crossed higher obstacles when trunk function was better. Patients with more isolated leg movement crossed higher obstacles when unaffected knee strength was stronger. PT Other 2017 Effects of kinetic chain exercise using EMG-biofeedback on balance and lower extremity muscle activation in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Chronic stroke patients doing closed-chain exercises with muscle feedback improved balance and thigh-muscle activation more than those doing open-chain exercises with muscle feedback. Both groups improved after six weeks. PT OT Cohort 2017 Prediction of prognosis of upper-extremity function following stroke-related paralysis using brain imaging. Journal of physical therapy science In 12 stroke patients with partly intact motor tract fibers, a diffusion MRI tract ratio was related to upper-limb motor and use scores at 3 months. Two cases did not follow this pattern, and all received physical, occupational, and speech therapy. PT Other 2017 Test-retest reliability of static postural control in people with multiple sclerosis. Journal of physical therapy science In people with relapsing-remitting MS, repeated balance-platform measures were generally stable on firm and foam surfaces, with eyes open or closed; speed and side-length measures were the most dependable. PT Other 2017 Robot-Applied Resistance Augments the Effects of Body Weight-Supported Treadmill Training on Stepping and Synaptic Plasticity in a Rodent Model of Spinal Cord Injury. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair In rats with spinal cord injury, adding horizontal robot resistance increased step length, and vertical resistance increased step height and velocity. Neither restored normal step cycle number or timing, and the study did not test overground walking. PT Cohort 2017 Factors influencing outcomes after medial hamstring lengthening with semitendinosus transfer in patients with cerebral palsy. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Knee flexion and overall gait improved after multilevel surgery that included hamstring lengthening and transfer plus other procedures in ambulatory patients with CP. Pelvic tilt stayed about the same. The contribution of the hamstring procedure alone cannot be separated. PT OT SLP Case Report 2017 Unexpected recovery from a vegetative state or misdiagnosis? Lesson learned from a case report. NeuroRehabilitation A woman diagnosed with a vegetative state for two years emerged into full consciousness after a passive brain connectivity test showed hidden activity typical of a minimally conscious state. This suggests she may have been misdiagnosed with functional locked-in syndrome, a condition that often goes undetected. PT Systematic Review 2017 Walking on uneven terrain in healthy adults and the implications for people after stroke. NeuroRehabilitation Healthy adults walking on uneven terrain change step length, width, timing, body height and muscle co-contraction. No study directly assessed these adaptations in people after stroke, so terrain difficulty is inferred, not shown. PT Other 2017 Ipsilateral EEG mu rhythm reflects the excitability of uncrossed pathways projecting to shoulder muscles. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In healthy adults, imagining shoulder elevation produced brain-wave suppression on the same side as the shoulder, and stronger suppression was linked to larger shoulder muscle responses to brain stimulation. Finger imagery was mainly opposite-side. PT Survey 2017 Exploring barriers to accessing physiotherapy services for stroke patients at Tema general hospital, Ghana. Archives of physiotherapy Stroke patients who missed more physiotherapy at a Ghana hospital were more likely to have low medication adherence and be employed. Staff attitude, waiting time, and wheelchair access were not linked to missing sessions. PT OT Other 2018 Development of a parent-reported questionnaire evaluating upper limb activity limitation in children with cerebral palsy. Physiotherapy research international : the journal for researchers and clinicians in physical therapy A parent-completed 19-item questionnaire for children with cerebral palsy covered upper limb activity from severe to mild limits. It can be completed at home, but change after therapy has not yet been tested. PT RCT 2017 Effects of the Bad Ragaz Ring Method on muscle activation of the lower limbs and balance ability in chronic stroke: A randomised controlled trial. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Adding Bad Ragaz Ring water therapy to conventional rehabilitation improved lower-leg muscle activation and balance compared with conventional rehabilitation alone. Because the water group also received a different amount of conventional rehabilitation, the separate contribution of water therapy cannot be isolated. PT Pilot 2018 Instrumented Test of Sensory Integration for Balance: A Validation Study. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) A portable instrumented balance test was related to the laboratory gold standard for sway moderately to well in adults with Parkinson's disease, and it separated fallers from non-fallers while the laboratory test did not. PT Other 2018 Mechanisms contributing to gait speed and metabolic cost in children with unilateral cerebral palsy. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Gait speed in children with unilateral cerebral palsy was linked to elastic energy return and knee co-contraction, while higher metabolic cost tracked knee co-contraction. This suggests training push-off power and eccentric control within task-specific gait work, not strength alone. PT RCT 2017 Postural motor learning in Parkinson's disease: The effect of practice on continuous compensatory postural regulation. Gait & posture People with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease had poorer initial balance timing on an oscillating platform, but improved at a rate similar to healthy controls and kept the gains after 24 hours. PT Other 2017 Relationship between dynamic balance and spatiotemporal gait symmetry in hemiplegic patients with chronic stroke. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao For 41 chronic stroke walkers, better standing weight-shifting balance and a narrower walking base went with more even step timing. Step length symmetry was not clearly related to standing balance. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 Effects of interventions with therapeutic suits (clothing) on impairments and functional limitations of children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Therapeutic suits for children with CP have weak evidence. DEFO and TheraTogs studies reported posture and gait improvements while worn. TheraSuit/AdeliSuit trials did not show a clear suit-only effect. Full body suits caused discomfort. PT Pilot 2017 Combined transcranial and trans-spinal direct current stimulation in chronic headache: A feasibility and safety trial for a novel intervention. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Five days of combined brain and spinal direct current stimulation was feasible and safe in nine chronic headache participants. Headache frequency fell, but severity, duration and sensitivity to pressure did not change at follow-up. PT OT Other 2017 Cross-cultural adaptation and measurement properties of the Brazilian version of the Exercise Preference Questionnaire(stroke). Brazilian journal of physical therapy The Brazilian Portuguese stroke exercise preference questionnaire was usable and mostly consistent across repeat answers, but items about instructions and planning were less dependable. It can help ask patients what exercise settings they prefer, not show an exercise program works. PT Case-Control 2017 Effects of positive expiratory pressure on chest wall volumes in subjects with stroke compared to healthy controls: a case-control study. Brazilian journal of physical therapy PEP increased tidal volume in both groups, but the effect was significantly smaller in stroke survivors. In the stroke group, PEP caused lung hyperinflation and did not improve breathing timing, with effects worsening at higher pressures. ← Previous PAGE 8 OF 78 Next →
