PT OT RCT 2024 Brain computer interface training with motor imagery and functional electrical stimulation for patients with severe upper limb paresis after stroke: a randomized controlled pilot trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Brain-computer interface training did not improve arm function more than standard therapy in severely impaired stroke patients. The main driver of recovery was whether the motor pathway was intact, not the type of training. Patients with damaged pathways showed little improvement regardless of intervention. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Characterization of an Italian population with neurological disorders in a rehabilitation setting using ClinFIT. Journal of rehabilitation medicine In 364 adults with neurological disorders, the ClinFIT Generic-30 tool identified severe problems in walking, moving around, and daily routines for over 30% of patients. It also captured issues like assisting others and intimate relationships that disease-specific core sets often miss. PT Other 2024 Alteration in Resting-State Brain Activity in Stroke Survivors After Repetitive Finger Stimulation. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation After finger stimulation, stroke survivors showed lower resting brain activity ratios, while controls did not change. The study did not show improved movement, and it was too small to guide treatment. PT OT SLP Survey 2024 The Life After Stroke In Northern Sweden Study (LASINS): Methodology, cohort demographics and initial results. NeuroRehabilitation Stroke survivors in northern Sweden, averaging three years post-stroke, mostly reported mild to moderate recovery. They completed a comprehensive survey on sleep, mood, fatigue, and activity, establishing a baseline for future research rather than testing a treatment. PT OT Pilot 2023 Feasibility of a new intervention addressing group-based balance and high-intensity training, physical activity, and employment in individuals with multiple sclerosis: a pilot randomized controlled trial. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A multidisciplinary balance and exercise programme was feasible and safe for employed people with MS, but showed no benefit over usual care. Participants reported fewer work barriers within the group, but the trial was too small to prove the intervention works. PT OT RCT 2024 Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation in rehabilitation of upper extremity hemiparesis following stroke: a pilot study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Adding repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation to standard therapy and brain stimulation did not improve upper-limb recovery more than brain stimulation and therapy alone. Both active groups improved significantly more than the sham group, but the added peripheral stimulation offered no extra benefit. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Facilitators to alleviate loneliness and social isolation as identified by individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders: A qualitative study. Rehabilitation psychology Veterans with spinal cord injuries identified eight strategies to ease loneliness, ranging from pursuing hobbies and getting outside to connecting with peers who share their experience. They emphasized that acceptance of their new normal and finding a sense of purpose were critical internal shifts. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2024 Measuring Neuroplasticity in Response to Cardiovascular Exercise in People With Stroke: A Critical Perspective. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Current biomarkers for measuring neuroplasticity after cardiovascular exercise in stroke survivors are inconsistent and rarely linked to functional recovery. While exercise shows promise, no specific marker reliably predicts clinical benefit, so treatment decisions should remain based on patient function rather than biological measures. PT OT Pilot 2024 Reminiscent music therapy combined with robot-assisted rehabilitation for elderly stroke patients: a pilot study. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adding reminiscent music to robot therapy improved self-efficacy and positive emotions more than robot therapy or usual care alone. However, the primary outcome of daily living activities showed no significant difference between the three groups. All groups improved from their own baselines. PT OT Pilot 2024 Validity and Reliability of a Telehealth Physical Fitness and Functional Assessment Battery for Ambulatory Youth With and Without Mobility Disabilities: Observational Measurement Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Hand grip, sit-to-stand, and timed walk tests matched in-person scores closely when done via video. The home-modified six-minute walk did not match in-person distances and should not be compared to them. No falls occurred. PT OT Cohort 2024 Prevalence of Arm Weakness, Pre-Stroke Outcomes and Other Post-Stroke Impairments Using Routinely Collected Clinical Data on an Acute Stroke Unit. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair 34.8% of 463 stroke patients at one acute hospital had upper limb weakness at a median of 1.0 day post-stroke. No one with severe weakness went home directly. PT OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2024 Effects of physical exercise interventions on balance, postural stability and general mobility in Parkinson's disease: a network meta-analysis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Balance exercises were the only intervention to improve all measured outcomes of mobility and stability. Dance, alternative exercises like Tai Chi, and resistance training also showed significant benefits. Combining these elements in a multimodal programme is likely more effective than any single exercise type alone. PT Cohort 2024 Barriers to Enrollment in a Post-Stroke Neuromodulation and Walking Study: Implications for Recruiting Women. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Women were significantly more likely to be excluded from a stroke walking trial than men. Fewer women were enrolled than in the general stroke population. Headache history and cognitive test scores were non-significant barriers that may disproportionately affect women. PT OT Other 2024 Relative aerobic load of walking in people with multiple sclerosis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Walking at a comfortable pace demands 60% of peak aerobic capacity for people with MS, a level considered high. Almost one-third exceed their ventilatory threshold, meaning daily walking causes physiological exhaustion. This suggests patients may be walking too fast for their fitness. PT OT Qualitative 2024 Patient experiences of physical activity and inactivity in the stroke unit: an interview study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Stroke patients described wanting to move and be independent, but staying in bed often felt invisible. They said staff who explained exercises, prioritized patients over routines, and encouraged movement helped them get up and feel respected. PT OT SLP RCT 2023 Efficacy of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Combined with Conventional Swallowing Rehabilitation Training on Post-stroke Dysphagia. Dysphagia Adding 1 mA tDCS to standard swallowing therapy improved swallowing scores more than standard therapy alone at 3 months. However, both groups received extensive concurrent treatments, so the specific benefit of tDCS cannot be isolated from the rest of the care. PT OT Other 2024 Freezing of gait assessment with inertial measurement units and deep learning: effect of tasks, medication states, and stops. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A deep learning model using leg sensors matched expert ratings of freezing of gait severity in Parkinson's disease. It worked well for standard walking and turning tests, but only if trained on the specific task being tested. It also distinguished freezing from voluntary stops if stops were included in training. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Spatial Neglect: An Exploration of Clinical Assessment Behaviour in Stroke Rehabilitation. Clinical rehabilitation Stroke clinicians rarely use standardised spatial neglect assessments because they view it as a visual problem rather than a multisensory one. They lack knowledge of functional tools and feel assessment is outside their scope. Barriers include time, cost, and equipment. Clinicians want short, flexible tests and online training with practical demos. PT OT Narrative Review 2024 Optimizing lower limb rehabilitation: the intersection of machine learning and rehabilitative robotics. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Machine learning can make lower limb rehabilitation robots more accurate and personalized, but high costs and 'black box' algorithms currently block clinical use. Therapists should view these tools as emerging aids requiring explanation and trust-building, not proven replacements for manual care. PT OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2024 Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation alone and in combination with rehabilitation therapies on gait and balance among individuals with Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation tDCS improved walking rhythm and reduced freezing of gait, but did not significantly change walking speed or stride length. It also helped balance on the Timed Up and Go test. No single optimal protocol for dose or placement has been established. PT OT Other 2024 Accuracy and Reliability of Remote Categorization of Upper Limb Outcome After Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Remote video assessment matched in-person upper limb outcome for 88% at 3 months and 96% at 6 months. It was less accurate at the chronic stage, 75% and 79%, and for the Good and Limited categories. PT OT Other 2024 A neuromechanical model characterizing the motor planning and posture control in the voluntary lean in Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation PD patients lean slower and with stiffer ankles, especially backward. They also make smaller preparatory movements before leaning. These model parameters correlate with clinical scores like UPDRS and Functional Reach, offering a way to quantify specific balance deficits. PT OT SLP Pilot 2024 A Digital Intervention to Promote Self-Management Self-Efficacy Among Community-Dwelling Individuals With Stroke: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies A 12-week text-messaging and coaching program improved stroke survivors' confidence in managing home, work, and social activities. Retention was high, but the small sample and unblinded design mean this shows feasibility, not proven effectiveness. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Identifying profiles of stroke patients benefitting from additional training: a latent class analysis approach. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Additional training improved daily living scores only for a specific group: patients aged 65-84 with right-side paralysis and moderate dependence. For this group, combining self-exercise with staff-led training worked best. Other patient profiles showed no significant benefit from these additions. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Unmet environmental needs and unmet healthcare needs in a population of young adults with cerebral palsy: what the SPARCLE study tells us. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Young adults with cerebral palsy who lack social support are much more likely to have unmet needs for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counselling. Physical accessibility alone did not predict unmet care. Clinicians should assess family and community support networks, not just transport or building access. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Family caregivers improve the diagnostic accuracy of disorders of consciousness: from remote to near-bed auditory stimulation. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Having a family caregiver deliver verbal instructions during consciousness assessments, whether in the room or via video, helped clinicians identify higher levels of consciousness in patients with severe brain injury. This method reduced the risk of misdiagnosing patients as unresponsive. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Clinical Features and Voxel-Based-Symptom-Lesion Mapping of Silent Aspiration in Acute Infratentorial Stroke. Dysphagia Silent aspiration occurred in 40.5% of acute infratentorial stroke patients, doubling pneumonia risk. Lesion location did not predict it. Do not rely on stroke severity scores alone; these patients need FEES assessment regardless of how mild their deficits appear. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Access to inpatient mood management services after stroke in Australian acute and rehabilitation hospitals. Clinical rehabilitation Mood screening rates in Australian stroke hospitals increased over ten years but remain low, with only 33% of acute patients screened by 2021. Access to psychologists improved in rehabilitation settings but stalled in acute care, leaving older patients and those needing interpreters at higher risk of being missed. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Trends in the Characteristics and Outcomes of Older Medicare Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury Treated in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities: 2013 to 2018. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Older Medicare patients with recent traumatic brain injury in inpatient rehabilitation increased 28.2% from 2013 to 2018. They were more often male, had more comorbidities, and more were discharged home. PT Cohort 2024 Use of the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test in community adult patients with mild traumatic brain injury. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Adults with mild traumatic brain injury often stopped a treadmill exercise test early, commonly because dizziness, imbalance, or headache worsened. But healthy controls also stopped frequently, mostly for pain or exertion, so test time alone does not prove brain-injury exercise intolerance. PT OT Other 2024 A Novel, Wearable Inertial Measurement Unit for Stroke Survivors: Validity, Acceptability, and Usability. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Wearable sensors counted steps and active arm time close to video and research systems in 30 stroke survivors. Most found them comfortable, but 19 could not put on or remove a wrist sensor, so usability needs simpler wristbands. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Development of a Job Retention Vocational Rehabilitation Intervention for People with Multiple Sclerosis Following the Person-Based Approach. Clinical rehabilitation A new job retention programme for multiple sclerosis was designed with patients and clinicians. It involves up to 10 hours of tailored support over three months, focusing on reasonable adjustments, symptom management, and legal rights. PT OT RCT 2024 The Utilization of Forced-Rate Cycling to Facilitate Motor Recovery Following Stroke: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Adding 45 minutes of motor-assisted cycling before upper-limb practice did not improve arm function more than practice alone. However, the cycling group walked significantly farther and had better cardiovascular fitness, suggesting cycling benefits legs and heart even if it does not boost arm recovery. PT OT SLP Pilot 2024 Coproduction and Usability of a Smartphone App for Falls Reporting in Parkinson Disease. Physical therapy Thirteen people with Parkinson disease tested a new app for logging falls over six months. They found it easy to use and preferred it to paper diaries, especially because they could type or speak instead of write. It helped some spot fall patterns, but not all. PT Pilot 2024 Aerobic Exercise Improves Cortical Inhibitory Function After Stroke: A Preliminary Investigation. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT In 12 people with chronic stroke, 4 weeks of supervised walking exercise did not improve 6-minute walk distance, but the extra time needed to suppress wrong responses decreased. PT OT Cohort 2024 Increased muscle responses to balance perturbations in children with cerebral palsy can be explained by increased sensitivity to center of mass movement. Gait & posture Children with cerebral palsy react to balance perturbations with much stronger muscle activation than typically developing peers. Their nervous systems are hypersensitive to body movement, causing stiff, co-contracted responses that make them step to avoid falling even at low speeds. PT OT SLP Case Report 2024 A case study of using community-based consensus methods to facilitate shared decision-making among a spinal cord injury network. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with spinal cord injury, clinicians and researchers shaped the Ontario SCI Alliance's strategic plan through two Delphi surveys and a retreat. The process generated five themes on inclusion, partnership, design, communication and sustainability, and led to policy changes including a catheter coverage campaign. PT OT RCT 2024 Effects of the powerball® system on muscle strength, coordination, fatigue, functionality and quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis. A randomized clinical trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adding PowerBall to physiotherapy did not improve grip strength, the main outcome, versus physiotherapy alone in people with multiple sclerosis. Coordination improved in both groups, so adding it did not show a clear benefit. PT OT Other 2024 Resting-state cortical electroencephalogram rhythms and network in patients after chronic stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In chronic stroke, slow brain waves dominate the injured hemisphere while fast beta waves remain linked to arm function. High beta power and specific delta network patterns on the healthy side correlated with better hand movement, but asymmetry itself did not predict recovery. PT Pilot 2023 Development and Preliminary Validity Study of a Modified Version of the Upper Extremity Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Use in Telerehabilitation. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT In chronic stroke, a video-based modified Fugl-Meyer arm test tracked total arm impairment well, but hand items matched poorly. Use it for total arm scores, not detailed hand function. PT OT RCT 2024 Effects of motor imagery-based neurofeedback training after bilateral repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on post-stroke upper limb motor function: an exploratory crossover clinical trial. Journal of rehabilitation medicine In 20 post-stroke adults, adding motor imagery neurofeedback to bilateral rTMS was associated with better upper limb movement scores than rTMS alone, but the trial had carry-over, no blinding, and usual rehab continued. PT OT SLP Pilot 2024 Community-based exercise program, self-reported health-related symptoms, and quality of life in persons with traumatic brain injury 45 + years old. NeuroRehabilitation In 20 adults with moderate-to-severe brain injury, a 12-week community-based aerobic program improved self-reported cognitive health and sleep quality compared to stretching. Global quality of life, emotional health, and social health showed no significant difference between groups. PT OT SLP Other 2024 The reliability, validity and clinical utility of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - ten-item version (CORE-10) in post-acute patients with stroke. Clinical rehabilitation The CORE-10 is a valid, free, and quick mood screen for post-acute stroke inpatients. A change of 9 points indicates 90% confidence in real clinical improvement or deterioration, while a score of 12 or higher marks clinically significant distress. PT OT Cohort 2023 Proactive outcome monitoring and standardisation of physiotherapy stroke rehabilitation - A retrospective functional outcomes analysis of Accelerated Stroke Ambulation Programme (ASAP). Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Stroke patients in a standardised rehab programme gained more mobility points than those in traditional care, but balance and daily living scores showed no clear difference. The programme relies on data-driven decision support rather than therapist preference alone. PT Other 2023 Physical Activity Behavior and Its Association With Global Cognitive Function Three Months After Stroke: The Nor-COAST Study†. Physical therapy Stroke survivors with higher cognitive test scores spent more time walking at moderate intensity and met weekly activity guidelines more often. The link was partly explained by lower-limb physical capacity. This does not show cognition caused activity. PT Other 2024 Towards co-design of rehabilitation technologies: a collaborative approach to prioritize usability issues. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Five people with spinal cord injury reported 60 usability issues with a brain-computer rehabilitation system. Stakeholder ratings marked 50% as high priority, with themes including comfort, safety, and system interruptions. PT OT SLP Other 2024 Revision of the brief international classification of functioning, disability and health core set for multiple sclerosis: a study of the comprehensive icf core set for multiple sclerosis with participants referred for work ability assessment. Journal of rehabilitation medicine In people with MS referred for work ability assessment, memory and temperament impairments were common but missed by the current Brief ICF Core Set. The study suggests replacing higher-level cognitive and emotional categories with memory and temperament to better capture disability. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Cognitive-motor dual-task interference in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and prodromal neurodegeneration: A scoping review. Gait & posture Walking while doing a mental task causes bigger drops in gait and thinking speed for people with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's than for healthy adults. This interference worsens as disease progresses, but no single test predicts it reliably yet. PT OT Cohort 2023 Using the Standing and Walking Assessment Tool at Discharge Predicts Community Outdoor Walking Capacity in Persons With Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury. Physical therapy Discharge SWAT stage 3B or higher predicted outdoor walking one year later. Stage 4 predicted independent walking without aids. Lower stages predicted non-walking. Use these cutoffs to guide equipment prescription and discharge planning for spinal cord injury patients. PT Protocol 2024 Implementation of a robot-mediated upper limb rehabilitation protocol for a customized treatment after stroke: A retrospective analysis. NeuroRehabilitation A structured flowchart for choosing robot exercises led to greater upper limb motor recovery and strength in 49 stroke patients than therapists' subjective choices in 32 patients. Daily living independence improved similarly in both groups, and pain did not change significantly in either. ← Previous PAGE 50 OF 78 Next →
