OT RCT 2017 Massage and Storytelling Reduce Aggression and Improve Academic Performance in Children Attending Elementary School. Occupational therapy international Children in weekly massage classes plus daily paired massage, and children in weekly storytelling classes plus daily paired retelling, had fewer teacher-recorded aggressive episodes and higher mean grades than control children in an extra class plus daily paired recall in one public school. OT Case Series 2017 Parent Training Occupational Therapy Program for Parents of Children with Autism in Korea. Occupational therapy international In four Korean families, parents reported changes of more than 2-point gains on 10-point performance and satisfaction scores after five months of occupational therapy plus parent training. Parents also felt stigmatized and wanted therapist direction. OT RCT 2017 Effectiveness of Information Processing Strategy Training on Academic Task Performance in Children with Learning Disabilities: A Pilot Study. Occupational therapy international Children with reading disabilities had posttest scores that differed between groups in Perceive, Plan, and Perform quadrants, not in overall Recall, after six weeks of PRPP strategy training, Four-Quadrant prompting, and usual therapy. Usual therapy alone did not show clear changes in most scores. OT RCT 2017 Interrelationship between insistence on sameness, effortful control and anxiety in adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Molecular autism Among 71 adolescents and young adults with autism, rigid sameness behaviours, lower self-control and anxiety moved together. Each link was partly explained by the third. This does not show that treating one will change the others. OT Other 2017 Weight-supported training of the upper extremity in children with cerebral palsy: a motor learning study. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Weight-supported game play plus usual rehabilitation improved game scores and blocks moved per minute in children with CP over three days. Movement-quality tests did not show a clear improvement, and the weight-supported game plus usual therapies cannot be separated. OT Other 2017 The Psychometric Properties of the Arabic Preschool Activity Card Sort. Occupational therapy international The Arabic Preschool Activity Card Sort gave stable scores over 2 weeks and described preschool participation across several daily domains. Its links to adaptive behavior were mostly modest. Use it to ask what children do, not to prove skill. OT SLP RCT 2017 Teen online problem solving for teens with traumatic brain injury: Rationale, methods, and preliminary feasibility of a teen only intervention. Rehabilitation psychology Teens and parents rated the overall online problem-solving program similarly, but parents in the teen-only group reported less benefit on several items. Teens completed a similar number of sessions with limited parent involvement as in the family version. OT RCT 2017 Longitudinal trajectories of post-concussive and depressive symptoms in adolescents with prolonged recovery from concussion. Brain injury Adolescents with persistent concussion symptoms and depression had lower symptom scores over six months. Higher concussion scores predicted faster depression improvement. Initial depression did not predict faster concussion improvement. The two symptom sets changed together. OT Pilot 2017 Exploring the Influence of an E-Learning Sensory Processing-Based Module for Graduate Level Occupational Therapy Students on Clinical Reasoning: A Pilot Study. Occupational therapy international First-year occupational therapy students scored 68% on a sensory reasoning test after an e-learning module, missing the 70% target. They excelled in relationship and attention categories but struggled with environment and culture. PT OT Other 2018 Development of a parent-reported questionnaire evaluating upper limb activity limitation in children with cerebral palsy. Physiotherapy research international : the journal for researchers and clinicians in physical therapy A parent-completed 19-item questionnaire for children with cerebral palsy covered upper limb activity from severe to mild limits. It can be completed at home, but change after therapy has not yet been tested. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Postural disorders in mouth breathing children: a systematic review. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Mouth-breathing children often show forward head posture and spinal curve changes, but the evidence linking these is weak. All included studies had low methodological quality and used inconsistent measurement tools, so clinicians should not treat this association as established. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 Effects of interventions with therapeutic suits (clothing) on impairments and functional limitations of children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Therapeutic suits for children with CP have weak evidence. DEFO and TheraTogs studies reported posture and gait improvements while worn. TheraSuit/AdeliSuit trials did not show a clear suit-only effect. Full body suits caused discomfort. PT OT RCT 2017 Accelerometer-Determined Physical Activity and Clinical Low Back Pain Measures in Adolescents With Chronic or Subacute Recurrent Low Back Pain. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy Accelerometer data showed no meaningful link between how much adolescents with chronic low back pain moved and their pain, disability, or quality of life. Activity levels did not explain clinical symptoms, suggesting movement volume alone is not a reliable marker of severity. PT OT Other 2017 Relationship between gross motor function and the function, activity and participation components of the International Classification of Functioning in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science In children with spastic cerebral palsy, ICF Activity and Participation scores were related to GMFM, GMFCS, MACS, WeeFIM, and ICF Function scores. This is an association, not proof that training improves participation. PT OT Pilot 2017 The effects of task-oriented training on hand dexterity and strength in children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy: a preliminary study. Journal of physical therapy science The six children who received conventional occupational therapy plus 20 minutes of task-oriented training showed a within-group hand dexterity improvement, but no between-group difference was found and grip strength did not improve. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2017 Service Delivery in the Healthcare and Educational Systems for Children Following Traumatic Brain Injury: Gaps in Care. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Children with TBI often miss needed care: few receive inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation, and schools rarely identify them for TBI-related support. Children who receive systematic transition services are more likely to be identified for school support. OT Systematic Review 2017 Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury and the Associations With Risk Behavior in Adolescence and Young Adulthood: A Systematic Review. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Childhood TBI was linked to later substance use in all 3 reviewed articles, but behavior findings were inconsistent. The studies were observational, so this does not prove injury causes risk behavior. PT OT SLP Other 2017 Easy assessment tool for motor imagery ability in elementary scool students. Journal of physical therapy science A paper-based hand rotation task tracked motor imagery ability in children without computers. Older students judged faster, and errors rose with rotation angle. However, reliability was not tested, so use it as a quick screen rather than a definitive measure. PT OT SLP Other 2017 Auditing Access to Outpatient Rehabilitation Services for Children With Traumatic Brain Injury and Public Insurance in Washington State. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Children with public insurance faced longer waits and lower acceptance rates for outpatient rehabilitation in Washington State. Speech therapy showed the largest disparities, with median waits of 20 days for public insurance versus 5 days for private insurance. PT OT SLP Case Report 2017 Reduction of progressive thoracolumbar adolescent idiopathic scoliosis by chiropractic biophysics® (CBP®) mirror image® methods following failed traditional chiropractic treatment: a case report. Journal of physical therapy science A 15-year-old with worsening adolescent idiopathic scoliosis showed a 19-degree curve reduction after 24 sessions of combined chiropractic mirror-image exercises, traction, and manipulation. This single case cannot prove the treatment works, as multiple interventions were delivered simultaneously without a control group. OT Other 2018 Color Afterimages in Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults showed no difference in color afterimage strength compared with typical adults. Scenes with typical colors produced stronger afterimages, but turning images upside down did not change this, so scene knowledge was not confirmed. PT OT Pilot 2017 Participation in physical activities for children with cerebral palsy: feasibility and effectiveness of physical activity on prescription. Archives of physiotherapy All 11 children improved in their chosen physical activities, and families accepted the programme. Accelerometer activity did not rise for every child, and two children's total activity fell. OT RCT 2017 Evaluating the Effectiveness of a School-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Intervention for Anxiety in Adolescents Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adolescents with ASD who received school-based CBT with teaching-assistant support and home projects showed greater reductions in parent, self and teacher-reported anxiety than wait-list controls. Teachers reported less social worry, but self-reported social worry did not differ. OT Cohort 2018 Parental sleep quality and behavior problems of children with autism. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Across 14 days, mothers' and fathers' previous-night sleep quality did not predict next-day behavior problems in their child with autism. Better sleep was associated with parents feeling more positive and less negative the next day. PT OT Other 2018 Design and development of the first exoskeletal garment to enhance arm mobility for children with movement impairments. Assistive technology : the official journal of RESNA A soft exoskeletal garment was designed for one child with arthrogryposis to lift his arms. It cost $10 in materials and allowed 90-degree arm lift without blocking other shoulder movement. Parents found it easy to use but initially wanted it to look more like normal clothing. OT SLP Case-Control 2018 Relationship between physiological and parent-observed auditory over-responsiveness in children with typical development and those with autism spectrum disorders. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children with autism blinked more strongly to sounds of 95 dB or lower and took longer to blink. These body responses were related to parent reports of sensory difficulties, but the study was small and did not test treatment. OT SLP Other 2017 Diverse Profiles of Anxiety Related Disorders in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported anxiety profiles differed by syndrome: Cornelia de Lange had the broadest symptoms, especially separation and generalized anxiety; fragile X and Rubinstein-Taybi showed more selective patterns. Assess anxiety in intellectual disability with the syndrome in mind. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Clinical and metabolic correlates of cerebral calcifications in Sturge-Weber syndrome. Developmental medicine and child neurology Brain calcification volume in Sturge-Weber syndrome increased over time and correlated with lower IQ scores. Larger calcification was also linked to younger age at seizure onset, suggesting it may serve as an imaging marker for cognitive outcome in young children. OT Case-Control 2018 Overweight and obese status in children with autism spectrum disorder and disruptive behavior. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children with autism and disruptive behavior were nearly twice as likely to be obese compared to matched controls. Obesity was more common in minority groups and in children with lower daily living skills. OT SLP Survey 2018 Autism Goes to College: Understanding the Needs of a Student Population on the Rise. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of 16-25-year-olds with autism reported more social and independent living problems than parents of those with ADHD. They asked for speech/language, social, and living-support services. OT Cohort 2018 Longitudinal study of driver licensing rates among adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Within one year of permit eligibility, 17.1% of adolescents with autism without intellectual disability got a learner's permit, compared with 62.4% of adolescents without autism. Among those with a permit, 81.9% with autism got an intermediate license within 12 months of eligibility. OT SLP Cohort 2017 Mental health outcomes of developmental coordination disorder in late adolescence. Developmental medicine and child neurology Young people with DCD were more likely to report peer problems in late adolescence. The link to overall mental health difficulty and depressive symptoms was not clear once social communication difficulties were taken into account. OT SLP Cohort 2017 Sex differences in parent-reported executive functioning and adaptive behavior in children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Females with autism spectrum disorder were rated by parents as having more everyday executive function problems and worse daily living skills than males, even though IQ, autism symptoms, and ADHD symptoms were similar. OT RCT 2018 Online Family Problem Solving for Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Influences of Parental Marital Status and Participation on Adolescent Outcomes. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Online family problem solving was linked to less trouble with behavior and daily functioning for adolescents from married homes. Adolescents from single-parent homes did not show clear gains. OT SLP Cohort 2017 Empathic responding in preschool-aged children with familial risk for autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Preschoolers with autism showed less visible distress when an adult pretended to hurt herself, but helped clean up just as much as other children. Parents of high-risk siblings without autism rated them as more empathic than parents of low-risk children. OT Case-Control 2017 Evaluating the importance of social motor synchronization and motor skill for understanding autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism matched an experimenter's movements less closely and made drumming movements slower and more variable than controls. The study did not test treatment. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2017 Refining the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Patient-Reported Outcome (PEDI-PRO) item candidates: interpretation of a self-reported outcome measure of functional performance by young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Developmental medicine and child neurology Young people with disabilities understood 86% of self-report items as intended and matched their ratings to spoken descriptions. They interpreted tasks literally, so unfamiliar wording or specific methods caused confusion. The measure works, but items need familiar contexts to avoid misinterpretation. OT SLP Cohort 2018 Parent Support of Preschool Peer Relationships in Younger Siblings of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Preschool siblings with autism had fewer playmates than at-risk siblings without autism and low-risk peers, and lower-quality home play. Parents reported more help needed during play and fewer community activities. At-risk siblings without autism matched low-risk peers in playmates and play quality. PT OT Other 2018 Safety and Feasibility of Rehabilitation Interventions in Children Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant With Thrombocytopenia. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Supervised PT and OT appear safe for children undergoing stem cell transplant with low platelets. No major bleeding occurred, and minor bleeding was rare. However, therapy was often declined or withheld, so frequent attempts are needed to ensure patients receive adequate rehabilitation. PT OT Case-Control 2017 Long-term impact of childhood selective dorsal rhizotomy on pain, fatigue, and function: a case-control study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Childhood selective dorsal rhizotomy did not reduce adult pain or fatigue, but adults who had the surgery reported better overall motor function and needed fewer hours of daily assistance than those who did not. OT Other 2018 Self-injurious behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder enrolled in the Study to Explore Early Development. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parent-reported self-injury was common in 692 children with ASD: 28% current, 47% ever. It went with sleep, gut, behavior, adaptive skills, and younger maternal age; clinicians observed it in 6%. PT OT Pilot 2018 Detection of early symptoms of cumulativetrauma disorders among mothers of handicapped children: a pilot study. Journal of physical therapy science Mothers of children with cerebral palsy who needed help with transfer and daily care had lower hand grip strength and lower wrist extensor muscle activity than mothers of healthy children. This pilot does not show that caregiving caused the difference. PT OT Other 2018 Introducing the Adults with Chronic Healthcare Needs (ACHCN) definition and screening instrument: Rationale, supporting evidence and testing. Disability and health journal A proposed screener identifies working-age adults with chronic healthcare needs by combining ongoing conditions or functional difficulties with elevated service use or unmet need. Cognitive testing supported item wording, but it has not yet been field tested. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2017 How to Implement Robots in Interventions for Children with Autism? A Co-creation Study Involving People with Autism, Parents and Professionals. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Professionals and stakeholders said robot KASPAR for children with autism should be matched to each child's plan, short, gradual, and embedded in practice. They described operation, voice, movement, setting, and training needs, not tested effects. OT SLP Survey 2017 A National Profile of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment Among US Children Aged 2 to 5 Years. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Parent surveys show 1.5% of US children aged 2 to 5 had ADHD, and 43.7% of those children took medication. Many had developmental, behavioral, or autism conditions, and 52.8% of children with special health care needs and ADHD had behavioral treatment. PT OT SLP Pilot 2017 Robot ZORA in rehabilitation and special education for children with severe physical disabilities: a pilot study. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Therapists and educators rated individual goals as easier after six ZORA robot sessions in 17 children with severe physical disabilities. Children were seen as playful and liked the sessions, but this pilot cannot show the robot alone caused the change. OT Cohort 2017 A cross-sectional analysis of executive function in Down syndrome from 2 to 35 years. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Parents reported executive function difficulties in people with Down syndrome relative to same-age peers, especially working memory and planning. For school-age children, emotional control and organizing materials were relative strengths, and 40% had elevated shifting scores. OT SLP Other 2018 Addressing medical needs of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders in a primary care setting. Autism : the international journal of research and practice 17 of 74 patients needed changes to the visit format after phone screening, and all 74 were successfully seen. Waiting rooms, touch, noise, light, and communication were barriers. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2017 Homogeneous Subgroups of Young Children with Autism Improve Phenotypic Characterization in the Study to Explore Early Development. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Researchers identified four distinct profiles of young children with autism. Two profiles featured mild language delays but significant sensory and behavioral issues. Clinicians should screen for cognitive rigidity and unusual sensory responses even when a child's language development appears near typical. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2018 Depression and Depressive Symptoms in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Children with TBI report more depressive symptoms than peers, but rates vary widely and evidence does not confirm higher clinical depression diagnoses. Symptoms often persist beyond the acute phase, suggesting a need for ongoing mental health monitoring rather than assuming they resolve with physical recovery. ← Previous PAGE 6 OF 50 Next →
