OT Qualitative 2022 Exploring Autism, Culture, and Immigrant Experiences: Lessons from Sri Lankan Tamil Mothers. Canadian journal of occupational therapy. Revue canadienne d'ergotherapie For Sri Lankan Tamil mothers, the biggest barriers to autism care were language, finances, and housing, not cultural clashes with therapists. Many withheld religious practices from providers, fearing misunderstanding. Trust was built through practical support and shared ethnicity, not just cultural competence. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Identifying critical behaviours for building engagement in telepractice early intervention: An international e-Delphi study. International journal of language & communication disorders Experts identified 64 specific behaviours for building engagement in telepractice early intervention. Key actions include taking the lead on rapport, using the family's home resources, adjusting for lighting and sound, and explicitly coaching parents to co-deliver therapy rather than just observing. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Assessment of Manual Abilities Using the Box and Block Test in Children with Bilateral Cerebral Palsy. Occupational therapy international In children with bilateral cerebral palsy, Box and Block Test scores strongly predicted daily living performance. Scores of 28 to 40 blocks indicated a high probability of managing independent wiping. Low scores suggest looking for environmental barriers or cognitive factors rather than just motor limits. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Decision-making experiences of health professionals in withdrawing treatment for children and young people: A qualitative study. Child: care, health and development Health professionals described withdrawal decisions as slow, consensus-based processes requiring early palliative care input and full MDT attendance. Nurses and non-clinical staff acted as bridges to families, while consultants focused on biomedical facts. Support for fathers and staff well-being were identified as critical gaps. OT Qualitative 2022 Canadian Occupational Performance Measure: Benefits and Limitations Highlighted Using the Delphi Method and Principal Component Analysis. Occupational therapy international French occupational therapists trained in the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure agreed it supports client-centered care and team decision-making. They identified barriers including patient cognitive difficulties, lack of institutional knowledge, and time constraints. This reflects expert opinion on usability, not evidence of clinical outcomes. OT Cohort 2022 Effectiveness of sensory modulation for people with schizophrenia: A multisite quantitative prospective cohort study. Australian occupational therapy journal Sensory modulation did not improve outcomes more than standard care in 41 people with schizophrenia. Both groups improved similarly, so SM is not proven superior to usual treatment, though it may offer short-term distress relief as a complementary option. OT Survey 2022 The Moderating Effect of Social Support on Parental Stress and Depression in Mothers of Children with Disabilities. Occupational therapy international Among 164 mothers of children with disabilities, higher parenting stress was linked to higher depression. Mothers who felt more social support showed less depression at the same stress level. This is an association, not proof that adding support reduces depression. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Play-based groups for children with cerebral palsy and their parents: A qualitative interview study about the impact on mothers' well-being. Child: care, health and development Mothers of children with cerebral palsy valued play-based groups for practical help with therapy and education plans, and for connecting with others in similar situations. Some struggled to open up due to language barriers or guilt, showing the need for sensitive facilitation. OT SLP Other 2022 The Family-Centred Practices Scale: Psychometric properties of the Spanish version for use with families with children with Down syndrome receiving early childhood intervention. Child: care, health and development For Spanish families of children with Down syndrome, a shortened 10-item version of the Family-Centred Practices Scale fits better than the original 12-item version. However, mothers and fathers interpret the questions differently, so scores cannot be directly compared between parents. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Adolescents with congenital limb reduction deficiency: Perceptions of treatment during childhood and its meaning for their current and future situation. Child: care, health and development Ten adolescents with congenital limb reduction deficiency described early surgery, prostheses, devices, training and counselling as creating options, though some later stopped using devices. They felt both confident and uncertain about work and adult care. OT Other 2022 Devising a Missing Data Rule for a Quality of Life Questionnaire-A Simulation Study. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP For the QI-Disability questionnaire, imputing missing items with the mean of completed items is accurate for Positive Emotions and Social Interaction if one item is missing. For other domains, scores should not be calculated if any item is missing. A total score is valid if no domain has more than one missing item. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Sensory features in autism: Findings from a large population-based surveillance system. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Sensory features were documented in 74% of 25,627 autistic children. These features co-occurred with motor, attention, sleep, and eating challenges, but not with cognitive scores. Documentation was lower for girls, Black children, and Hispanic children, suggesting missed cases rather than true absence. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Association between atopic diseases and neurodevelopmental disabilities in a longitudinal birth cohort. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with ADHD or other neurodevelopmental disabilities were significantly more likely to have asthma, eczema, or allergic rhinitis. Autism showed no such link. Therapists should watch for these common allergies in patients with ADHD or developmental delays, as they may worsen symptoms. OT Other 2022 Daily living skills of autistic adolescents and young adults: A scoping review. Australian occupational therapy journal Most research on daily living skills for autistic adolescents and young adults focuses on short-term gains in school settings. This leaves therapists without evidence that skills generalise to home or community, or that they last beyond six months. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Benefits of an Intensive Individual CO-OP Intervention in a Group Setting for Children with DCD. Occupational therapy international Children with DCD improved on goals trained during a five-day intensive CO-OP camp, with gains held at three-month follow-up. Transfer to goals coached at home afterwards was less consistent, with parents reporting improvements that children and independent ratings did not always confirm. PT OT Survey 2022 Characterizing Pain Among Adolescents and Young Adults With Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. Pediatric physical therapy : the official publication of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association Pain is common in adolescents and adults with arthrogryposis. Higher pain scores and more painful body regions were associated with reduced functional mobility. A 7-day average pain rating is more reliable for tracking change than a single current pain score. PT OT Cohort 2022 Object Permanence and the Relationship to Sitting Development in Infants With Motor Delays. Pediatric physical therapy : the official publication of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association Infants with motor delays showed delayed object permanence, matching typical peers in skill but occurring about 5 months later. Object permanence improved as sitting skills developed, with strong correlations between the two. The new Object Permanence Scale reliably tracked this progression using simple toys. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of neonates born at term with perinatal haemorrhagic stroke: A population-based study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Most infants with perinatal haemorrhagic stroke had lasting neurodevelopmental issues. Parietal lobe involvement strongly predicted cerebral palsy and cognitive deficits. Frontal lobe strokes showed no motor or basic cognitive impairment, suggesting better outcomes for that group. OT Other 2022 Impact of an Interoception-Based Program on Emotion Regulation in Autistic Children. Occupational therapy international Staff reports showed significant changes in emotion regulation and improvements in interoception after a 25-week curriculum in 14 autistic children. With no control group, this does not prove the curriculum caused the gains. PT OT Narrative Review 2022 Effects of voluntary exercise on muscle structure and function in cerebral palsy. Developmental medicine and child neurology Resistance training builds muscle size in children with cerebral palsy, but increasing muscle power requires fast concentric movements. High-velocity training increased fascicle length and walking capacity, while standard strength training often failed to improve functional mobility. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Community Conversations: Stakeholder-Identified Research Priorities to Foster Community Participation for Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disability. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stakeholders with intellectual and developmental disabilities prioritized measuring social belonging and safety over clinical metrics. They identified transportation, information access, and staff training as key community barriers, calling for research that tracks real-world inclusion rather than just medical outcomes. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2022 Toileting Resistance Among Preschool-Age Children with and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Preschoolers with autism resist toilet training far more often than peers with other delays or typical development. Constipation, diarrhea, and social awareness deficits are key markers. Clinicians should screen for these issues before starting toilet training to avoid resistance. OT SLP Other 2022 The Impact of Preinjury and Secondary Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on Outcomes After Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Adolescents with traumatic brain injury and either pre-existing or new-onset ADHD showed similar deficits in executive function, social competence, and behavior. However, parents of teens with new-onset ADHD reported significantly higher depression and distress, particularly when the injury was more than four months prior. OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Positive behavioural support for children and young people with developmental disabilities in special education settings: A systematic review. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Thirty studies of positive behavioural support in special schools mostly reported reductions in challenging behaviour and gains in adaptive skills. The evidence rests almost entirely on single-case designs with high risk of bias, so it describes what these programmes look like rather than proving they work. OT Other 2022 Research on the Correlation between Multisource Big Data Virtual Assisted Preschool Education and the Development of Children's Innovative Ability. Occupational therapy international This is a computer science paper about data mining algorithms for kindergarten management systems. It does not report on clinical treatments, therapy outcomes, or patient care, so it contains no findings relevant to physical, occupational, or speech-language therapy. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Short-Term Clinical Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction In Adolescents During The COVID-19 Pandemic. International journal of sports physical therapy Adolescents who had ACL reconstruction during the pandemic had stronger uninvolved quadriceps at three months than those treated pre-pandemic. However, strength in the injured leg and self-reported function were identical between groups. The pandemic did not worsen short-term recovery. PT OT Survey 2022 Exploring problems for school reintegration following spinal cord injury: Perspectives on the kindergarten through fifth-grade population. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Children with spinal cord injury often return to school needing new support plans. Physical therapy was the most common need, followed by occupational therapy and counseling. Access barriers remain frequent, and many parents did not know their child's injury level. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 How parents of children with autism spectrum disorder experience the COVID-19 pandemic: Perspectives and insights on the new normal. Research in developmental disabilities Parents of children with autism described lockdown as initially offering rest and family time, but prolonged isolation led to severe stress, routine disruption, and behavioral crises. They urgently requested remote psychological support and adapted educational strategies to maintain engagement. OT Survey 2022 Modelling triadic relationships in families of children with intellectual disability. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID In families of children with intellectual disability, higher maternal distress was linked with more behaviour problems in both the child and a sibling. Household poverty was linked with more distress and behaviour problems. These are associations, not proof that intervention changes them. OT Survey 2022 Effects of Smartphone Overdependence and the Quality of Friendship on Depression among High School Students. Occupational therapy international Among 121 Korean high school students, higher smartphone overdependence and lower friendship quality were both linked to more depression. The study did not test treatment, so it does not show changing either would help. OT Survey 2022 Participation patterns and predictors of participation in preschool children with developmental disability. The British journal of occupational therapy Lithuanian preschoolers with developmental disability participated most at home, less in daycare/preschool, and least in community. Parents wanted the most change in daycare/preschool. For OTs, assess and address environmental demands and how severe the child's activity limitations are. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Intrapersonal, interpersonal and environmental correlates of moderate to vigorous physical activity and sedentary time in adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Adolescents with intellectual disabilities matched their parents' activity levels. For every 10 minutes a parent moved, the teen achieved about 6 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity. This link was strongest in teens with Down syndrome or autism, suggesting family-based movement is key. OT Other 2022 The Construction of an Action-Speech Feature-Based School Violence Recognition Algorithm and Occupational Therapy Education Model for Adolescents. Occupational therapy international Simulated school violence in 20 students was detected with 85.3% accuracy using waist and leg sensors. An occupational therapy education model for perpetrators and victims is proposed, but no patients were treated, so there is no evidence the therapy reduces violence or harm. PT OT Other 2022 Functional and Structural Brain Connectivity in Children With Bilateral Cerebral Palsy Compared to Age-Related Controls and in Response to Intensive Rapid-Reciprocal Leg Training. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Intensive leg training did not change brain structure or connectivity in children with bilateral cerebral palsy. Training improved speed on the device but did not improve walking speed. Small sample size and motion artifacts limit confidence in these null findings. PT OT Qualitative 2022 The Impact of Hypermobile "Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome" and Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder on Interpersonal Interactions and Relationships. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome described losing their sense of self as they could no longer do their hobbies or work. They found it hard to ask for help without feeling guilty, and noted that strangers judged them for using wheelchairs or resting. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 The Effects of Resistance Training on Physical Fitness and Neuromotor-Cognitive Functions in Adults With Down Syndrome. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Eleven adults with Down syndrome completed a 10-week resistance training program. They improved strength, motor skills, working memory, and mood. No control group means these gains cannot be proven to come from the exercise rather than time or testing effects. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Early measurement of autism risk constructs in the general population: A new factor structure of the First Years Inventory (FYIv3.1) for ages 6-16 months. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research The revised First Years Inventory breaks down into seven distinct risk domains for infants aged 6 to 16 months. Non-social markers like sensory regulation and motor skills significantly distinguished children with later autism diagnoses from those with other developmental delays. OT Pilot 2022 Exploring Effects of Sensory Garments on Participation of Children on the Autism Spectrum: A Pretest-Posttest Repeated Measure Design. Occupational therapy international Children who tolerated wearing sensory garments improved on their specific goals for sleep and dressing. However, parent stress and sense of competence did not change. The study lacked a control group, so improvement may have come from the goal-setting process itself. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Healthcare utilisation and unmet health needs in children with intellectual disability: a propensity score matching approach using longitudinal cohort data. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with intellectual disability had similar GP and emergency department use to peers, but were more likely to be seen in hospital and stay overnight at age 9. Caregivers reported unmet health needs at ages 9 and 13, primarily due to waiting lists and lack of accessible care. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Feeding practices in public hospitals' neonatal intensive care units: An exploration into the ways in which COVID-19 affected the best practice in Gauteng. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings In two South African NICUs, lockdowns left staff overloaded, so nurses took over feeding, mothers were often absent, and caregiver training stopped. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Early positive approaches to support (E-PAtS): Qualitative experiences of a new support programme for family caregivers of young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Caregivers said the E-PAtS group helped them feel normal, speak openly, gain confidence, and use small communication and daily routine strategies they reported as helpful for their child. OT Survey 2022 Characteristics of the autism spectrum disorder gastrointestinal and related behaviors inventory in children. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research A parent questionnaire for children with autism grouped GI-related signs into seven areas, including bowel pain and mealtime behaviors. It may help notice possible distress, but it cannot confirm a GI problem. OT Cohort 2022 Atypical sensory processing features in children with autism, and their relationships with maladaptive behaviors and caregiver strain. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Sensory avoidance was the strongest predictor of caregiver strain, even after accounting for maladaptive behaviors. Identifying specific sensory patterns, rather than just behavior problems, helps clinicians understand which families are at highest risk for stress and where to target support. OT SLP Survey 2022 Comparison of unmet health care needs in children with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and both disorders combined. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with intellectual disability alone had more unmet medical, hearing and mental health care needs than children with autism, and more gaps in insurance coverage; children with both diagnoses had more general unmet needs but fewer unmet medical needs. OT Qualitative 2022 A mixed methods evaluation of the acceptability of therapy using LEGO® bricks (LEGO® based therapy) in mainstream primary and secondary education. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Facilitators and parents rated LEGO-based therapy as highly acceptable, with facilitators rating it significantly higher than parents. Both groups saw benefits during sessions, but noted that these skills did not consistently transfer to the classroom or home environment. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Unscheduled healthcare for children with intellectual disabilities: A systematic scoping review. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Children with intellectual disabilities visit GPs and emergency departments more often than their peers, yet often receive less urgent care and poorer service quality. Parents report feeling unheard, while clinicians admit they lack training and time to provide adequate support. PT OT Cohort 2022 Peak functional ability and age at loss of ambulation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Developmental medicine and child neurology For boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, how they move at age 6 to 7 predicts when they will stop walking. A rise-from-floor time over 5 seconds or a low functional score at this age strongly predicts earlier loss of ambulation, even with steroid treatment. OT Other 2022 Do children with and without autism spectrum disorder use different visuospatial processing skills to perform the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test? Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism but no intellectual disability drew the Rey figure less accurately than typical peers when copying and from memory. Their drawings were more fragmented, and spatial working memory scores were linked to performance differently for each group. OT SLP Survey 2022 Effect of Covid-19 lockdown on indian children with autism. Research in developmental disabilities Parents reported that children with autism regressed across daily living, language, behaviour, school and online therapy during the Indian lockdown. School performance showed the largest drop. The authors suggest preparing home-based and parent-led plans for future closures. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Change in Maladaptive Behavior Affects Intergenerational Relationships in Fragile X Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Over 7.5 years, decreases in maladaptive behaviors in adolescents and adults with Fragile X Syndrome predicted increases in maternal positivity more strongly than the reverse. Mothers of sons and daughters with fewer behavior problems described them more positively, suggesting behavior change may precede relational improvement. ← Previous PAGE 22 OF 50 Next →
