PT OT SLP Survey 2019 Prevalence of five lifestyle risk factors among U.S. adults with and without stroke. Disability and health journal Stroke survivors are significantly less likely to exercise, smoke, or eat poorly compared to those without stroke. They also cluster multiple risk factors, with higher rates of having 2 to 5 lifestyle risks, suggesting targeted prevention efforts are needed. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2019 A systematic review of measures of adherence to physical exercise recommendations in people with stroke. Clinical rehabilitation No validated tools exist to measure adherence to exercise after stroke. Clinicians currently rely on diaries and surveys with no proven accuracy. Do not assume patient-reported completion matches actual performance, as these methods lack evidence of validity. OT RCT 2018 Effects of a virtual reality video game exercise program on upper extremity function and daily living activities in stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Adding Wii video-game exercise to usual stroke therapy did not improve standard arm/hand test scores more than usual therapy alone. The daily-living questionnaire showed a group difference, but the paper's numbers for it are unclear. PT OT Systematic Review 2018 Assistive Technology for the Upper Extremities After Stroke: Systematic Review of Users' Needs. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Stroke survivors, carers and clinicians prioritise upper-limb assistive devices that are easy to use, fit home life, support real tasks, and feel safe. Cost, evidence and trust decide adoption. PT OT SLP Other 2018 The effect of comprehensive physiotherapy-based rehabilitation on stooped posture in Parkinson's disease. Journal of physical therapy science In Parkinson's patients with stooped posture, inpatient comprehensive physiotherapy improved trunk bending angles significantly more than usual home care. However, the rehabilitation group received intensive multi-disciplinary therapy, so the specific contribution of physiotherapy alone cannot be separated. OT Cohort 2019 A Comparison of Satisfaction With Life and the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended After Traumatic Brain Injury: An Analysis of the TRACK-TBI Pilot Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Six months after TBI, 31% had a mismatch between functional recovery and life satisfaction. Depression at six months was linked to lower satisfaction. Ask about mood, not just recovery. OT Cohort 2019 Group Differences Among Caregivers of Civilians and Service Members or Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Caregivers of service members or veterans with TBI were more often younger spouses, cared for people injured longer ago, and reported more adjustment problems in the person with TBI and feeling trapped. These group differences do not show cause. OT RCT 2018 Generalizing remotely supervised transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS): feasibility and benefit in Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Ten home tDCS sessions paired with cognitive training were feasible in 16 people with Parkinson's disease. Fatigue, sleep, visual learning and reaction time scores did not show a clear change; negative affect scores decreased, but this was a small pilot. PT OT RCT 2018 Evaluation of the Keeogo exoskeleton for assisting ambulatory activities in people with multiple sclerosis: an open-label, randomized, cross-over trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation People with multiple sclerosis walked and climbed stairs slower while wearing the Keeogo exoskeleton compared to not wearing it. However, using the device at home for two weeks improved their unassisted walking and stair performance, suggesting a conditioning benefit rather than immediate assistance. OT SLP Qualitative 2019 'I kind of figured it out': the views and experiences of people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in using social media-self-determination for participation and inclusion online. International journal of language & communication disorders People with TBI used social media to stay connected, but many lurked, felt overwhelmed or fatigued, and learned platforms by trial and error. They lacked direct support and needed prompt, relevant help. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Transcranial direct current stimulation for promoting motor function in cerebral palsy: a review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation tDCS paired with training was linked to better walking speed, balance and mobility in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy, but upper limb motor gains remain unclear. OT SLP Other 2018 Capturing Expert Knowledge for the Personalization of Cognitive Rehabilitation: Study Combining Computational Modeling and a Participatory Design Strategy. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies A free web tool can generate personalized paper-and-pencil cognitive tasks for people after stroke. It uses expert ratings of task demands, not patient outcomes, so it may help therapists choose tasks but does not show improved recovery. PT OT Pilot 2019 A Single Session of Robot-Controlled Proprioceptive Training Modulates Functional Connectivity of Sensory Motor Networks and Improves Reaching Accuracy in Chronic Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Chronic stroke patients judged arm position more accurately after one session of passive arm movements with left/right judgment and feedback. Six patients who could actively reach moved in straighter paths. This was small and uncontrolled, so it is not proof of lasting recovery. OT Cohort 2019 Healthcare Utilization and Missed Workdays for Parents of Children With Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Parents of children with traumatic brain injury missed more work and used more healthcare services than parents of children with other injuries, especially in the first 6 months. The burden grew with injury severity. PT OT Pilot 2018 User-centered practicability analysis of two identification strategies in electrode arrays for FES induced hand motion in early stroke rehabilitation. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Both semi-automatic and automatic electrode-array search methods found stimulation areas for hand opening in sub-acute stroke patients, but finger flexion was less reliable. The semi-automatic search was faster, and neither method was clearly preferred. OT RCT 2019 The effects of time-use intervention on the quality of life of outpatients with chronic stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke outpatients who received weekly counselling to balance their daily routines reported better quality of life than those given usual therapy and free time. The intervention helped them choose and track two new activities per week. OT Cohort 2019 Use of a multilayer perceptron to create a prediction model for dressing independence in a small sample at a single facility. Journal of physical therapy science A neural-network model predicted which stroke patients would dress independently at discharge better than conventional models in 82 patients, but it was tested only at a single facility and not externally. OT Other 2019 A modified standardized nine hole peg test for valid and reliable kinematic assessment of dexterity post-stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Stroke participants showed slower, less smooth hand movements on a standardized nine-hole peg test than controls. The movement analysis required motion capture and was tested only in mild to moderate impairment. PT OT SLP Other 2019 Outcome measures in post-stroke arm rehabilitation trials: do existing measures capture outcomes that are important to stroke survivors, carers, and clinicians? Clinical rehabilitation Stroke survivors prioritized independence and freedom, but the most common trial measures for arm rehabilitation failed to capture these outcomes. Clinicians focused on everyday tasks and pain. Current research tools often miss what matters most to patients. OT SLP Pilot 2019 User activity recognition system to improve the performance of environmental control interfaces: a pilot study with patients. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In eight patients with neurological or spinal cord conditions, a prediction-assisted environment control interface let them complete more daily tasks in ten minutes than manual scanning. Users did not report lower workload. PT OT Other 2019 A study on the sleep quality, pain, and instrumental activities of daily living of outpatients with chronic stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Outpatients with chronic stroke who reported worse sleep and more pain had lower independence in daily tasks like grooming and shopping. These factors correlate with daily function, but the study cannot prove they cause the decline. PT OT Cohort 2019 Predictive utility of an adapted Marshall head CT classification scheme after traumatic brain injury. Brain injury An adapted Marshall CT classification did not meaningfully predict injury severity or functional outcomes after moderate-severe TBI. It only helped predict whether acute surgery was done, so it should not guide long-term rehabilitation prognosis. OT Other 2018 Friendship Quality, Friendship Quantity, and Social Participation in Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury. Seminars in speech and language Adults with TBI had less social participation than matched peers, but their friendships were rated as high quality and their number of friends was not clearly lower. Most still had at least one close friendship their friend also valued. PT OT Other 2019 A postural unloading task to assess fast corrective responses in the upper limb following stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A robotic arm test that removes a background load gave steadier results in healthy people and identified more stroke-related arm control problems than a test that adds a load, especially trouble slowing the arm. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Use of Hospital-Based Rehabilitation Services and Hospital Readmission Following Ischemic Stroke in the United States. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In Medicare claims for 88,826 older adults after ischemic stroke, more hospital physical therapy was linked to lower 30-day readmission. Occupational therapy and speech-language therapy showed no such link, so this does not prove these treatments prevent readmission. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2019 Effect of Specific Over Nonspecific VR-Based Rehabilitation on Poststroke Motor Recovery: A Systematic Meta-analysis. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Rehabilitation-specific and commercial VR did not differ clearly. Rehabilitation-specific VR showed better upper-limb movement and daily hand use than usual therapy, while commercial VR did not. PT OT Narrative Review 2019 Tele-monitored tDCS rehabilitation: feasibility, challenges and future perspectives in Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Remote tDCS for Parkinson's is feasible and safe, with high compliance and mild side effects. Efficacy data is pending or limited to small open-label studies, so it should not be used as a proven treatment for motor or cognitive symptoms yet. PT OT SLP Other 2019 Altered muscle activation patterns (AMAP): an analytical tool to compare muscle activity patterns of hemiparetic gait with a normative profile. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A new muscle activity analysis tool identified specific timing and amplitude deviations in stroke survivors' walking. Plantarflexor abnormalities correlated with reduced propulsion and slower walking speeds, offering a way to target gait rehabilitation based on individual muscle coordination deficits. PT OT RCT 2019 Brain-Machine Interface in Chronic Stroke: Randomized Trial Long-Term Follow-up. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Patients with severe chronic stroke arm paresis who received contingent brain-machine interface training plus physiotherapy had higher combined hand and arm motor scores six months later than before. Sham training plus physiotherapy did not significantly change scores. BMI was not tested without physiotherapy. PT OT Cohort 2019 Estimated Life-Time Savings in the Cost of Ongoing Care Following Specialist Rehabilitation for Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in the United Kingdom. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Specialist inpatient rehabilitation for severe traumatic brain injury was associated with large estimated reductions in ongoing care costs, but this observational cost analysis assumed gains would persist without rehabilitation. PT OT Other 2018 Reliability and validity of transfer assessment instrument version 3.0 in individuals with acute spinal cord injury in early rehabilitation phase. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao The Transfer Assessment Instrument 3.0 consistently rated wheelchair transfers in early spinal cord injury rehab. Raters agreed closely on scores, and the tool aligned with overall transfer quality judgments. Use it to standardize transfer evaluation and identify techniques risking upper limb injury. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Pregnancy Outcomes in Women with Spinal Cord Injuries: A Population-Based Study. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Mothers with spinal cord injury, paralysis, or spina bifida faced high risks of infection, blood clots, and preterm birth. Infants were often born early or small. However, these babies did not have higher rates of hospitalization or death in their first two years compared to other infants. PT OT SLP RCT 2019 Ergometer cycling improves the ambulatory function and cardiovascular fitness of stroke patients-a randomized controlled trial. Journal of physical therapy science Adding ergometer cycling to standard physiotherapy improved walking speed, endurance, and blood pressure in sub-acute stroke patients compared to physiotherapy alone. The cycling group walked faster and covered more distance, but the study was small and short. PT OT Other 2019 Actigraph assessment for measuring upper limb activity in unilateral cerebral palsy. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Wrist sensors used during play separated children with unilateral cerebral palsy from typically developing peers, and greater hand difficulty showed greater asymmetry. This supports actigraphy as an objective measure of arm use. PT OT Cohort 2018 Stratification of stroke rehabilitation: Five-year profiles of functional outcomes. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Stroke rehab patients admitted who needed help or supervision to walk showed the biggest daily mobility and self-care gains. Those unable to sit, sitting but not walking, or already independent gained less per day. Admission walking level indicated likely discharge mobility. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Comorbid Conditions Among Adults 50 Years and Older With Traumatic Brain Injury: Examining Associations With Demographics, Healthcare Utilization, Institutionalization, and 1-Year Outcomes. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Older adults with TBI and acute hospital complications had longer stays and higher rehospitalization rates. Those with chronic disease burdens also faced higher rehospitalization risks. Substance abuse clusters were linked to institutionalization but not 1-year functional outcomes. These patterns highlight distinct risk profiles for discharge planning. OT RCT 2019 Effect of the Wii Sports Resort on the improvement in attention, processing speed and working memory in moderate stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Moderate stroke patients who also used Wii for 8 weeks did not improve attention, speed or working memory more than those on usual stroke rehabilitation. Usual rehabilitation included walking, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and neuropsychology. OT Cohort 2019 Relationship Consensus and Caregiver Burden in Adults with Cognitive Impairments 6 Months Following Stroke. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Caregivers of stroke survivors with cognitive impairments who reported less agreement on goals and expectations were more likely to have high burden. Time together and satisfaction did not track with burden in the main analysis. OT Other 2019 Evaluation of tremor interference with control of voluntary reaching movements in patients with Parkinson's disease. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation People with Parkinson's disease and tremor began reaching later and took longer to complete movements than controls. Measured tremor intensity tracked the delay in starting, but clinical tremor scores did not. PT OT RCT 2019 Boosting robot-assisted rehabilitation of stroke hemiparesis by individualized selection of upper limb movements - a pilot study. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The group comparison of selected versus standard upper-limb movement training before adjusting for baseline scores was not significant. After accounting for baseline scores, the group trained on selected movements had an adjusted change of 4.42 versus 2.12 Fugl-Meyer points, but other outcomes were null. PT OT Other 2019 Self-efficacy and Reach Performance in Individuals With Mild Motor Impairment Due to Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Confidence for reaching was lower with the more affected arm in 20 people with mild arm impairment after stroke and 6 controls. Confidence about accuracy tracked accuracy on reaches across the body; speed confidence did not track speed for the more affected arm. PT OT Systematic Review 2019 Effects of Dopamine on Motor Recovery and Training in Adults and Children With Nonprogressive Neurological Injuries: A Systematic Review. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Evidence for dopamine medication was mixed. Some levodopa stroke studies showed motor improvement, but evidence for traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injury was weak. PT OT RCT 2019 Myoelectric Computer Interface Training for Reducing Co-Activation and Enhancing Arm Movement in Chronic Stroke Survivors: A Randomized Trial. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Chronic stroke survivors using EMG computer arm training improved Fugl-Meyer arm scores by 3.3 points at 6 weeks, with gains at 10 weeks. No dose or movement versus isometric training was clearly better, and there was no control group. PT OT Cohort 2019 Relationships between gait variability and ambulatory activity post stroke. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Stroke survivors who showed more variable step timing when walking in a busy lobby took fewer daily steps and had shorter walking bouts. This link was absent when they walked in a quiet hallway, suggesting clinic tests may miss real-world activity predictors. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2019 Sensory retraining of the leg after stroke: systematic review and meta-analysis. Clinical rehabilitation Interventions aimed at leg sensory retraining after stroke improved leg sensation and balance in pooled studies, but gait speed did not improve. The evidence came from small, low-quality trials, so it is not enough to change routine care by itself. OT Cohort 2019 Depressive symptoms in caregivers immediately after stroke. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Depressive symptoms stayed similar from 2 to 6 weeks, but 57% of caregivers had at least mild symptoms early. Uncertainty, stress, coping, support, income, and stroke-survivor function were linked to symptoms; cortisol was not. PT OT RCT 2019 A suite of automated tools to quantify hand and wrist motor function after cervical spinal cord injury. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A new set of hand and wrist measurement tools reliably quantified muscle force deficits in people with cervical spinal cord injury, matching scores from standard clinical exams. The tools distinguish impaired strength from preserved movement range, offering a precise way to track recovery over time. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 The Effect of Frailty on Discharge Location for Medicare Beneficiaries After Acute Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Frail Medicare patients were less likely to go to inpatient rehab than non-frail patients with similar stroke severity. They were instead sent to skilled nursing facilities or home. This suggests pre-stroke frailty, not just stroke severity, drives discharge location. PT OT RCT 2019 Dynamic Lycra® orthoses as an adjunct to arm rehabilitation after stroke: a single-blind, two-arm parallel group, randomized controlled feasibility trial. Clinical rehabilitation No clear benefit was seen when adding dynamic Lycra orthoses to usual arm rehabilitation after stroke. The usual-care group showed more improvement on several arm outcomes, and wear was linked to skin, swelling and discomfort problems. OT RCT 2019 Clinical and cost effectiveness of memory rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury: a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial. Clinical rehabilitation Group memory rehabilitation plus usual care did not produce a clinically important improvement in self-reported everyday memory compared with usual care alone at the main follow-up. Some objective and goal attainment outcomes favoured it, but the primary patient-reported memory result was not positive. ← Previous PAGE 10 OF 56 Next →
