OT SLP Other 2023 The Social Support Network of Adults with an Autism Spectrum Condition: An Exploration Using the Network in Action-Questionnaire. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism reported few network members and wanted more friends or better contact. Family members listed more network members than patients did, but the two often disagreed on what help was needed. Use patient self-report to guide treatment goals, not proxy estimates. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Impact of social-, health-, and disability-related factors on pregnancy outcomes in women with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A population-based latent class analysis. Disability and health journal Women with intellectual disabilities face higher pregnancy risks, but the level depends on their specific profile. Those with significant medical, psychiatric, and physical comorbidities had the greatest risk of complications like preterm birth and caesarean delivery. OT SLP Survey 2022 A survey of autistic adults, relatives and clinical teams in the United Kingdom: And Delphi process consensus statements on optimal autism diagnostic assessment for adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults and relatives reported mixed UK diagnostic experiences. Many had referral help, but 65.3% waited over 12 weeks; some sensory or information needs were unmet. Clinicians agreed on 11 statements for adult autism assessment services, expert recommendations, not tested interventions. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2022 Socioecological model-based design and implementation principles of lower limb preservation programs as partners for limb-loss rehabilitation programs- A mini-review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences This review outlines a framework for building limb-preservation programs that partner with rehabilitation services. It recommends integrating vascular, wound, and reconstruction care with physical, occupational, and mental health support. Central coordination and patient navigation are highlighted as key strategies for multidisciplinary teams. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Depression, Anxiety, and Suicidality in Individuals With Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts in people with chronic traumatic brain injury did not increase during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with before it. Symptoms remained stable, though disability and substance use consistently predicted higher distress. OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Loneliness in autistic adults: A systematic review. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults described wanting connection but finding social interaction exhausting and isolating. Loneliness was not the same as being alone, so clinicians should not assume an autistic adult does not want contact. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Factors associated with the early emergence of atypical feeding behaviours in infants and young children: A scoping review. Child: care, health and development Associations with feeding difficulties are inconsistent. Breastfeeding duration shows no clear protective effect. Introducing solids at or after 6 months and offering lumpy textures before 10 months may reduce pickiness. Parental anxiety and sensory sensitivity are linked to fussiness, but evidence quality varies. OT SLP Other 2023 Greater gender diversity among autistic children by self-report and parent-report. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic children self-reported more binary and nonbinary gender diversity than peers, but parents only reported more body incongruence. Parent and child reports did not correlate, meaning parents may miss the child's internal gender experience. PT OT Survey 2023 Diet, Physical Activity, and Stress Among Wheelchair Users With Multiple Sclerosis: Examining Individual and Co-Occurring Behavioral Risk Factors. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Wheelchair users with MS who had two or three behavioral risk factors reported worse depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and health-related quality of life than those with zero or one. Insufficient physical activity was the most common single risk factor, present alone in 28% of participants. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2023 Utilising Interview Methodology to Inform the Development of New Clinical Assessment Tools for Anxiety in Autistic Individuals Who Speak Few or no Words. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents and clinicians described anxiety in non-speaking autistic people as increased vocalisation, challenging behaviour and avoidance. Key triggers were unpredictability and routine changes. They stressed assessing baseline behaviour and ruling out pain before diagnosing anxiety. OT Survey 2023 Subjective Poverty Moderates the Association Between Carer Status and Psychological Outcomes of Adult Siblings of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adult siblings of people with IDD reported worse mental distress and wellbeing than the general population. Financial hardship was the strongest predictor of poor outcomes. For siblings who are financially secure, taking on a caring role was linked to worse mental health, but for those already struggling financially, caring added little further risk. OT Survey 2022 Protective and risk activities for emotional and behavioural well-being of children and adolescents during the COVID-19 lockdown. Child: care, health and development In lockdown, more social network time was linked to more emotional difficulties in children and fewer in adolescents. More solitary screen time was linked to more behavioural problems. Getting along with a parent was linked to fewer problems. OT Survey 2022 COVID-19 and mental health of primary school children: Comparison of 2019 and 2020. Child: care, health and development Primary school children's overall emotional symptom scores showed no clear difference between June 2019 and June 2020. A few individual items differed slightly, but the authors did not treat these as clear differences. PT OT Survey 2023 Physical activity levels in adults with chronic low back pain: A national survey in the general Spanish population. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Most adults with chronic low back pain in Spain were not sufficiently active. Those who were least active reported more pain, greater disability and poorer mental health. This links inactivity to worse outcomes but does not prove that exercise fixes these issues. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Effect of mobile application types on stroke rehabilitation: a systematic review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Mobile apps showed inconsistent benefits across stroke outcomes. Therapy apps improved motor paresis and aphasia in small studies, and rehab videos helped exercise adherence. However, neglect, daily living independence, quality of life, and depression showed no clear benefit or mixed results. OT SLP Survey 2023 Autistic People's Perinatal Experiences II: A Survey of Childbirth and Postnatal Experiences. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic parents reported birth and postnatal care was harder than for non-autistic parents. They were more likely to feel overwhelmed by sensory input, find home visits stressful, and feel professionals did not understand their needs or take their concerns seriously. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 'It's being a part of a grand tradition, a grand counter-culture which involves communities': A qualitative investigation of autistic community connectedness. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults described community connectedness as having three distinct parts: a feeling of belonging, specific friendships, and political advocacy. Online spaces and autistic-led events were key for connection, while internalised stigma or a weak autistic identity acted as barriers. OT Cohort 2022 Stigma, Intrusiveness, and Distress in Parents of Children with a Disorder/Difference of Sex Development. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Parents' distress was not caused by stigma directly. It arose when stigma made the child's condition feel like it was intruding on daily life. Therapists should target this interference and help parents maintain engagement in valued activities. PT OT Cohort 2023 Patients' Expectations Before Initiation of Intrathecal Baclofen Treatment: A Longitudinal Study with 1-Year Follow-Up. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Intrathecal baclofen improved spasticity, pain, and self-care, but patients' expectations were not met. Overall satisfaction remained moderate to low. Clinicians must align realistic goals with individual expectations before treatment to avoid dissatisfaction despite clinical gains. OT Survey 2023 Social support and links to quality of life among middle-aged and older autistic adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Among 388 autistic adults aged 40 to 83, feeling supported was linked to better quality of life across physical, psychological, social, environmental and autism-specific domains. Practical everyday support also related to social, environmental and autism-specific quality of life. OT SLP Qualitative 2023 "[I] don't wanna just be like a cog in the machine": Narratives of autism and skilled employment. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic professionals described disclosure as a high-stakes gamble that could secure accommodations or cost them their jobs. Success relied on bypassing traditional interviews, trauma-informed support, and workplaces that allowed them to be openly autistic. OT Survey 2022 Role of Individual, Family, and Community Resilience in Moderating Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Mental Health Among Children. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Children with 4 or more adverse experiences were more likely to have ADHD, anxiety, behavior disorders, or depression. High individual resilience was linked with lower likelihood for all four outcomes. PT OT Cohort 2023 Rest-Activity Rhythm Characteristics Associated With Depression Symptoms in Stroke Survivors. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Stroke survivors with more fragmented 24-hour activity patterns had higher odds of depression symptoms. This association held across two distinct samples. The link was strongest for clinically significant depression rather than mild symptoms. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Societal Participation of People With Traumatic Brain Injury Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A NIDILRR Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation People with traumatic brain injury reported significantly less community involvement during the pandemic compared to before. However, their levels of productivity and social relations remained stable. Pre-existing factors like disability severity and income continued to predict participation outcomes similarly in both periods. OT Cohort 2023 Differences in daily life executive functioning between people with autism and people with schizophrenia. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism reported more severe everyday executive difficulties than adults with schizophrenia and controls, especially in planning, organizing and initiating behavior. In autism, these difficulties predicted poorer daily living skills. OT SLP Other 2023 Social and emotional characteristics of girls and young women with DDX3X-associated intellectual disability: a descriptive and comparative study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Girls and young women with DDX3X intellectual disability had higher anxiety and self-injury than girls with other genetic intellectual disability. Autism characteristics were similar. Anxiety and self-injury need assessment. Do not assume they are only autism. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 'This battle, between your gut feeling and your mind. Try to find the right balance': Parental experiences of children with spinal muscular atrophy during COVID-19 pandemic. Child: care, health and development Parents of children with SMA prioritized protecting their child's health, leading them to cancel therapies and isolate the family. They felt responsible for continuing home exercises and struggled with conflicting advice on returning to school. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Pain trajectories and well-being in children and young people with cerebral palsy: A cohort study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Children with cerebral palsy fell into five distinct 5-week pain patterns. Those with high or changing pain reported lower physical and psychological well-being than those with stable low pain. Repeated brief pain checks may help spot children at risk for poor well-being. PT OT Survey 2023 Using Self-Regulation Assessment to Explore Associations between Self-Regulation, Participation and Health-Related Quality of Life in a Rehabilitation Population. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Self-regulation scores linked to how satisfied patients felt with their life and mental health, but not to how much they actually participated or their physical health. Trust in one's own abilities was the strongest predictor of this satisfaction. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2023 Early Opportunities to Explore Occupational Identity Change: Qualitative Study of Return-To-Work Experiences After Stroke. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Stroke survivors described needing early, low-pressure opportunities to practise work skills and talk with employers. They valued services that anticipated their needs and offered continuous support, rather than waiting for them to ask for help. OT SLP Survey 2023 Shining a Light on a Hidden Population: Social Functioning and Mental Health in Women Reporting Autistic Traits But Lacking Diagnosis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Women who scored high on an autism screening test but lacked a diagnosis showed better social functioning than diagnosed autistic women, yet still scored lower than non-autistic women. They reported similar levels of anxiety and depression to diagnosed autistic women. This suggests undiagnosed autistic women face real social difficulties and mental health risks. OT Qualitative 2022 Lived experiences of adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Developmental medicine and child neurology Four adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder described anxiety as a primary barrier to daily activities. They identified routines, supportive relationships, and using personal talents as key factors that helped them overcome this anxiety and participate. OT Survey 2023 COVID-19 Induced Environments, Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes and Problematic Behaviors: Evidence from Children with Syndromic Autism Spectrum Disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In children with syndromic autism, caregiver reports linked lower child quality of life to reduced parent mental health appointments and TV at least 3 hours daily. Outdoor time was linked to fewer angry outbursts and daze, but not clearly to total quality of life. PT OT Systematic Review 2023 Clinical Outcomes Following Exercise Rehabilitation in People with Multimorbidity: A Systematic Review. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Exercise rehabilitation improved walking distance and quality of life in people with two or more chronic conditions. It did not consistently improve peak oxygen consumption or blood sugar control. Most trials lacked blinding, and the specific mix of exercise types varied widely across studies. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2023 Physical training in adults with asthma: An integrative approach on strategies, mechanisms, and benefits. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Physical training improves asthma control, quality of life, exercise capacity, and sleep while reducing anxiety, depression, and medication use. Breathing exercises offer similar benefits to aerobic training. Both are safe and effective non-pharmacological therapies, though exercise-induced bronchoconstriction does not consistently improve. PT OT SLP Other 2023 Needs of an uninsured equity-deserving minority patient cohort with physical disabilities during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Uninsured patients with physical disabilities reported unmet medical needs, broken equipment, and isolation most frequently. Rent and job worries peaked early in the pandemic, while equipment problems persisted longer. These findings highlight gaps in care for vulnerable populations during crises. OT Other 2023 'They ask no questions and pass no criticism': A mixed-methods study exploring pet ownership in autism. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults were less likely to have owned pets, but pet owners reported higher life satisfaction. Interviews described pets helping calm, routine, social contact and identity; housing, cost and care worries remained barriers. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 Transition to adult services experienced by young people with cerebral palsy: A cross-sectional study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Most young people with cerebral palsy did not experience key transition practices. Only 13% had a written plan, 16% met the adult team, and 10% knew their GP got a discharge letter. Services reported providing these practices more often than young people experienced them. OT Cohort 2023 Longitudinal Analysis of Mental Health in Autistic University Students Across an Academic Year. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mental health scores for autistic students stayed high and stable across the academic year, even through early lockdown. Avoidant coping linked to worse depression and anxiety. Alcohol use dropped significantly. The usual university adjustment benefit seen in other students did not occur. PT OT Other 2022 Nurses' beliefs about back pain, their coping strategies and participant activation for self-management. The South African journal of physiotherapy A 12-week workplace campaign for nurses in Zambia increased their confidence in managing back pain and reduced sick leave and medication use. However, beliefs about prognosis and exercise did not improve, and actual exercise levels did not change. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 Alexithymia and intolerance of uncertainty predict somatic symptoms in autistic and non-autistic adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults reported more physical symptoms than non-autistic peers, but this was not caused by autism itself. Instead, difficulty identifying emotions and intolerance of uncertainty predicted the symptoms. Treating these psychological traits may help reduce physical distress in autistic patients. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Parents' perceptions of children's emotional well-being during spring 2020 COVID-19 restrictions: A qualitative study with parents of young children in England. Child: care, health and development Parents of preschoolers in England described children losing sleep and having more tantrums when nursery closed. Some children bonded more with family. Parents struggled to create routines without external support. These are reported perceptions, not measured outcomes. OT Cohort 2022 Pathways to adaptive functioning in autism from early childhood to adolescence. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Higher ADHD symptoms in early childhood and adolescence were associated with lower adaptive functioning in autistic teenagers. Autism social communication difficulties also predicted lower functioning, but behavioral and emotional problems did not. OT SLP Other 2023 A comparison of the content and nature of worries of autistic and neurotypical young people as they transition from school. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic teens worry about the same things as neurotypical peers but feel more distress and anxiety. They specifically fear unexpected routine changes, social skills, and noise. Use concrete discussion tools to explore these worries before transition. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Factors Determining Not Returning to Full-Time Work 12 Months After Mild Ischemic Stroke. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Among mild stroke survivors, persistent functional limitation and diabetes were linked to not returning to full-time work. Anxiety, depression, and fatigue appeared associated only before adjusting for other factors, so their independent role remains unclear. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Risk for intellectual disability populations in inpatient forensic settings in the United Kingdom: A literature review. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Patients with intellectual disabilities in UK forensic settings face higher risks of violence and self-injury than those without, but restrictive ward environments worsen their mental health. Physical health issues like obesity and vitamin D deficiency are prevalent but under-addressed. Patients are willing to engage in risk planning. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Cognitive and psychological recovery patterns across different care pathways 12 months after hospitalization for COVID-19: A multicenter cohort study (CO-FLOW). Annals of physical and rehabilitation medicine Cognitive deficits and psychological symptoms improved over 12 months after hospitalization for COVID-19, but 21% still had cognitive deficits at 12 months. The no-rehabilitation group had the fewest cognitive and psychological problems. The groups differed in illness severity. OT Other 2022 Light up: an intervention study of the effect of environmental dynamic lighting on sleep-wake rhythm, mood and behaviour in older adults with intellectual disabilities. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Installing dynamic lighting in living rooms improved mood and reduced depressive symptoms in older adults with intellectual disabilities. However, it did not stabilise their sleep-wake rhythm as hypothesised, and the effect on sleep onset was minor. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 Psychosocial services provided by licensed cardiac rehabilitation programs. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences North Carolina cardiac rehab programs routinely screen for depression and anxiety, with 94% using specific tools. However, few assess social support independently. Staff cited cost, time, and patient stigma as the main barriers to expanding these psychosocial services. PT OT Survey 2023 The relationship between frailty and motor function among living in the community elderly females. Journal of physical therapy science Among 67 older women in community exercise salons, frailty was common, and women with frailty had weaker grip, slower walking and longer chair-to-walk-to-chair times. Depression, physical function and oral function were most strongly related to frailty. ← Previous PAGE 21 OF 41 Next →
