SLP Other 2026 Accuracy and cut-off values of different acoustic measures in the sustained vowel task of Brazilian Portuguese speakers. CoDAS Six measures taken from a held 'a' sound separated Brazilian Portuguese speakers with voice disorders from those without. The noise measure SNL 100-3000Hz was the best balanced; the others are better kept for screening or for confirming a suspicion. SLP Systematic Review 2026 What has been researched about implicit memory in speech-language-hearing pathology? A scoping review. CoDAS Most implicit memory research in speech-language-hearing looks at priming-based treatment, tested almost entirely in single-case or small studies. Speech-language pathologists held negative implicit attitudes toward stuttering despite positive stated views, and voices were rated less severely dysphonic when the speaker's race was labelled Black. SLP Systematic Review 2023 Pre- and post-operative voice therapy (PaPOV): Development of an intervention for patients with benign vocal fold lesions. International journal of language & communication disorders Twenty-seven components of a pre- and post-operative voice therapy programme for benign vocal fold lesions achieved consensus across four data sources. The authors state the intervention is not yet suitable for clinical use and requires further refinement before a feasibility trial. SLP RCT 2024 The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) in People with Parkinson's Disease Before and After Intensive Voice and Articulation Therapies: Secondary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Intensive voice treatment (LSVT LOUD) significantly improved voice quality in people with Parkinson's disease, with gains lasting six months. This was a secondary outcome of the trial. Articulation-focused treatment showed no immediate change. SLP RCT 2023 A randomized controlled trial of the effects of flow phonation voice treatment for primary muscle tension dysphonia. Journal of communication disorders Flow phonation exercises plus vocal hygiene improved voice quality and daily-life impact for 17 people with muscle tension dysphonia over six weeks. The laryngeal airflow measures the exercises were meant to change showed no clear change. The authors call the data preliminary. SLP RCT 2023 Effects of warm-up exercises on self-assessed vocal effort. Logopedics, phoniatrics, vocology Both a five-minute reading-aloud warm-up and phonation through a short straw made healthy young adults feel they were working their voice slightly harder, not easier. No difference between the two exercises. SLP RCT 2025 Vocal Function Exercises With and Without Maximally Sustained Phonation: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Individuals With Normal Voice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Requiring the longest sustained phonation in Vocal Function Exercises did not produce significantly better improvement than capping it after three weeks or holding it at baseline. All three groups improved, and the between-group difference was not significant. SLP Systematic Review 2022 Effectiveness of Interventions for Dysphagia in Parkinson Disease: A Systematic Review. American journal of speech-language pathology Across 26 studies of swallowing treatments in Parkinson's disease, results were inconsistent and the evidence too weak to recommend any specific intervention. A few studies saw faster swallowing or less residue, but the quality of the data does not support choosing one treatment over another. SLP Pilot 2026 Development and Initial Validation of Phonation Quotient for Connected Speech: A Low-Cost, Indirect Aerodynamic Measure of Phonatory Airflow. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) A new low-cost airflow measure derived from repeating a sentence tracks actual connected speech airflow in healthy adults. It works best for speech tasks; the older vowel-based version still wins for sustained vowels. No voice-disorder data yet. SLP Pilot 2026 Emotional Vocalizations Cause Auditory Distraction That Affects Word Repetition and Behavioral Listening Effort. Ear and hearing Emotional vocalizations (pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant) slowed secondary-task responses in both quiet and noise, but did not meaningfully reduce word repetition. The emotion of the sound had no specific trial-by-trial distraction effect beyond a general slowing. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Gaps and Future Directions in the Research About Masking and Voice Production: Bibliometric Analysis, Systematic Literature Review, and Meta-analysis. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A facemask does not measurably alter the qualities of a person's voice on standard tests, but users consistently report more effort, throat fatigue, and communication difficulty. The one pooled measure (loudness) did not differ across eight studies. SLP Cohort 2026 Aerodynamic measurements in singers at usual, low, and high frequencies. CoDAS Men's air pressure, resistance, and impedance rise significantly when they sing higher, while women's aerodynamic efficiency peaks at their usual speaking pitch. These are descriptive measurements in 60 healthy singers, not a treatment effect. SLP Survey 2026 The collaboration of RTs and SLPs in German centers for weaning from mechanical ventilation in neurological and neurosurgical early rehabilitation - results from an online survey. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences One-third of SLPs in German weaning units had no RT at all. Where both are present, RTs report more collaboration than SLPs do, and each group rates itself as having more influence than the other. SLPs lead communication; RTs lead secretion and tube work. SLP Systematic Review 2026 COVID-19-related voice disorders: a scoping review. CoDAS Hoarseness and vocal fatigue were the most common complaints in non-intubated adults with mild to moderate COVID-19, persisting in 17.1% after recovery. Maximum phonation time was shorter than in healthy controls. This maps the evidence; it does not test a treatment. SLP Cohort 2026 Self-perception of swallowing, vocal symptoms, and the possibility of dysphagia occurrence in patients under palliative care. CoDAS In 50 palliative care patients, 80% reported negative swallowing perception, 58% had vocal symptoms above cutoff, and 62% screened positive for dysphagia risk. Sarcopenia and dyspnea were associated with worse scores across all three measures. SLP Cohort 2026 Fundamental frequency measures in the comparison of habitual and disguised voices. CoDAS Base f0, minimum f0, and maximum f0 held steady when speakers disguised their voices, while mean and median f0 shifted upward. For forensic voice comparison, the stable measures are the ones to rely on when a suspect has altered their pitch. SLP Other 2026 Impact of Circulating Estrogen and Mild Systemic Dehydration on Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Female Rats. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR In female rats, removing estrogen made vocalizations shorter and quieter, but replacing it with estradiol did not restore them to normal. Mild dehydration narrowed the frequency range of calls. The changes were modest. SLP Cohort 2026 Pharyngeal Dysphagia in Cancer: Characterizing Functional and Physiological Swallow Targets Across 12 Cancer Types. Dysphagia Dysphagia is common across all 12 cancer types studied, but severity and the specific swallowing muscles affected differ by diagnosis. Multiple cancers including head and neck carried the highest rates of severe impairment. SLPs should expect different swallowing problems depending on cancer type. OT SLP Qualitative 2026 Improving Health Care Services for Autistic Young Adults: Development and Use of a Self-Reported Health Care Transition Readiness Assessment. International journal of language & communication disorders Autistic young adults ranked understanding their own health conditions and feeling safe as most important for independence. Communication challenges and reliance on caregivers were their biggest barriers. Digital reminders were central to daily functioning. SLP Other 2026 Swallowing After Open Partial Horizontal Laryngectomy Type IIa: A Quantitative Videofluoroscopic Analysis Using the Analysis of Swallowing, Physiology, Events, Kinematics, and Timing. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR After OPHLIIa surgery, 100 patients showed markedly reduced hyoid movement, poor pharyngeal constriction, and increased residue compared to healthy adults. Aspiration, when it occurred, was silent. Compensatory mechanisms like prolonged laryngeal closure were present but did not eliminate the risk. SLP Qualitative 2026 'We Needed a Hell of a Lot More Support, the Emotional Side of It, the Physical Side of It. Every Side of It, We Just Didn't get It.' A Qualitative Study Exploring the Lived Experiences of Healthcare Services Following Discharge for People With a Total Laryngectomy and Their Families. International journal of language & communication disorders People with a laryngectomy and their spouses describe feeling unprepared and unsupported after discharge. Community staff lack laryngectomy knowledge, the system feels disjointed, and spouses take on the care burden. Participants wanted more support at home, including speech therapy. SLP Cohort 2026 Spectral, cepstral, and short-term acoustic measures in women with and without laryngeal and vocal alterations. CoDAS Women with laryngeal lesions had significantly higher jitter, shimmer, and spectral tilt, and lower HNR, GNE, and HF noise than women without lesions. Several differences were large enough to matter clinically. Connected speech added information beyond the sustained vowel for some measures. SLP RCT 2026 Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and manual laryngeal therapy on muscle tension dysphonia: randomized clinical trial. CoDAS Combining TENS with laryngeal manual therapy was the only approach that reduced vocal tension in women with muscle tension dysphonia. LMT alone improved overall voice quality; TENS alone did not. All three groups reported less vocal fatigue and musculoskeletal pain. SLP Pilot 2026 Direction of Cepstral Peak Prominence Change Moderates Divergent Kinematic Responses to Voice Stimulability Testing. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Stimulability testing did not produce uniform changes in vocal fold movement across 27 women with voice lesions. The direction of an acoustic measure (CPP) split the group into two subgroups showing opposite kinematic shifts. Patients reach the same perceptual improvement through different physiological routes. PT SLP Cohort 2026 Use of mindfulness in the treatment of tinnitus: consensus based on the opinion of Brazilian experts. CoDAS Ten Brazilian tinnitus specialists agreed that mindfulness is a useful addition to tinnitus care but should not be the only treatment. They recommend one 30-minute session weekly with daily home practice, alongside counseling or other therapies. SLP Cohort 2026 Creak Derived from CAPE-V Sentences in Patients with AdLd and pMTD. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Creak from the six short CAPE-V sentences did not separate adductor laryngeal dystonia from primary muscle tension dysphonia (9.85% vs 9.33%). The shorter sentences may give creak fewer chances to appear, so this does not rule it out on longer speech tasks. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Mapping the characteristics of training for vocal conditioning of singers: a scoping review. CoDAS Eight small studies (1–34 singers) on vocal conditioning all reported positive results, mostly in self-reported measures. The most common strategies were respiratory muscle exercises and straw/tube phonation, but only one study had a control group, so the evidence base is thin. SLP Cohort 2026 Sensitivity, specificity, and cutoff points of the Cough Severity Index (CSI-Br) and the Newcastle Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (LHQ-Br) in individuals with chronic refractory cough. CoDAS The Cough Severity Index (cutoff 4.5, sensitivity 84.9%, specificity 83.0%) is a good screening tool for chronic refractory cough; the Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (cutoff 5.8, sensitivity 70.0%, specificity 73.4%) is moderate and should not confirm hypersensitivity alone. Both now have Brazilian cutoff points. SLP RCT 2026 Immediate effects of photobiomodulation with low-level laser followed by the voiced tongue trill technique in women with behavioral dysphonia. CoDAS Adding infrared laser before a 5-minute tongue trill exercise did not improve voice quality, acoustics, or perceived effort more than the exercise alone in 30 women with behavioral dysphonia. The one between-group difference was laryngeal appearance on video (60% vs 13.3% improved). SLP Other 2026 Perceptual Adaptation to Noise-Vocoded Voice Clones. Trends in hearing AI voice clones stayed more intelligible than the original human voice even after degradation that strips harmonic detail. A 13% accuracy advantage that held. Listeners adapted to both at similar rates, but hearing human speech first slightly hurt later recognition of cloned speech. OT SLP Systematic Review 2026 The Views of Autistic Adults on Early Autism Interventions: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Literature Review. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Across 19 studies, autistic adults consistently said early support should respect the child's autonomy, be play-based and enjoyable, accept autism rather than target traits, and change the environment rather than the child. They also reported significant harm from compliance-focused behavioural interventions. SLP Other 2026 Minimal Perturbation-Based Segment Selection in Connected Speech Differentiates Healthy and Pathological Voice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A moving-window method applied to connected speech separated 41 healthy from 41 pathological voices across all three acoustic measure groups. CPP showed the strongest separation. This suggests connected speech is a viable medium for acoustic voice assessment alongside sustained vowels. SLP Cohort 2026 Management pathways and outcomes of children with hearing loss identified through newborn and infant hearing screening at a tertiary paediatric hospital in the Western Cape, South Africa. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Of 72 children diagnosed with hearing loss at a South African paediatric hospital, only 11 received hearing aids. Most follow-up was retesting, not therapy. A child referred from this pathway may not be receiving structured language intervention. SLP Cohort 2026 Patient-reported voice and swallowing outcomes and their impact on quality of life in the late postoperative period following total thyroidectomy. CoDAS Women 6+ months after total thyroidectomy still report significant voice and swallowing symptoms, with fatigue and mental health the most affected quality-of-life areas. Voice symptoms dominate over swallowing. These patients may need ongoing SLP assessment well past the typical recovery window. SLP Other 2026 Cross-cultural validation of the self-assessment of competence in communication - SACCom - to Italian. CoDAS A 19-item self-assessment of communication competence has been validated into Italian (TACCom-IT). SLH pathologists can now use it to assess and track communication skills in Italian-speaking clients. The authors note it still needs further testing in this population. SLP Other 2026 Cross-cultural adaptation of the Escala De Fatigabilidad Vocal en Docentes (EFV-D) to brazilian portuguese. CoDAS A Spanish vocal-fatigue questionnaire for teachers has been translated and culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. The testing to confirm the scale actually works has not yet been done, so it is not ready for clinical use. SLP Cohort 2026 Reliability and Concurrent Validity of the Likert-Type Stuttering Severity Scale and the Visual Analog Scale in Turkish-Speaking Adults Who Stutter. International journal of language & communication disorders Trained speech-therapy students rated stuttering severity on a brief numerical scale and a 100-mm line, and both closely matched clinician SSI-4 scores. These quick tools could supplement detailed assessments in screening or research settings where time is limited. SLP Qualitative 2026 Exploring the Laryngectomy Pathway Experience-a Mixed-Method, Patient Journey Mapping Study of Two US Health Centres. International journal of language & communication disorders Twelve laryngectomy patients in one US health system saw a median of 13 different professions in their first year. Care was rated mostly positive, but patients flagged gaps in pre-surgery preparation, phone communication, and paying for voice supplies. Issues SLPs can address directly. SLP Other 2026 Voice Quality in Individuals With Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. International journal of language & communication disorders Blinded listeners could tell older adults with AIDS from controls almost every time, by tongue backing, pharyngeal narrowing and a harsh, creaky or whispery voice. Acoustic measures were weaker. Nothing here shows what causes the pattern. ← Previous PAGE 17 OF 17 Next →
