PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2026 A Scoping Review to Map Health Outcomes in Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction. International journal of language & communication disorders Across 49 studies on inducible laryngeal obstruction, outcome measures varied widely with no standard set. Patient-reported questionnaires dominated, but few captured environmental or personal factors. Current tools miss key life impacts, so results cannot be reliably compared across studies. SLP Qualitative 2025 Developing a FEES service in South Africa: Interdisciplinary reflections for dysphagia care. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Four dysphagia clinicians reflected that building a bedside FEES service depended on ENT, SLT and nursing collaboration, protected scheduling, shared endoscope access, and education to overcome scepticism. They described FEES helping guide diet and feeding decisions, but gave no patient outcomes. SLP Other 2026 Listening in a noisy world: The impact of acoustic cues and background music on speech perception in autism. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults understood speech in noise less accurately overall. With both voice and location cues, their accuracy matched non-autistic adults. Background music lowered accuracy overall, with the clearest drop in non-autistic adults when both cues were present. SLP Other 2026 Immediate Effects and 1-Year Maintenance of a Voice Education Program for Older Adults. International journal of language & communication disorders A four-session voice education program improved older adults' knowledge of vocal hygiene, with gains maintained one year later. Participants reported applying practices like drinking more water and reducing voice volume, though memory issues and habit-breaking remained barriers for some. SLP Other 2026 Construct Validity of the Brazilian Portuguese Version of the Thyroidectomy-Related Voice and Symptom Questionnaire (BR-PT-TVSQ). International journal of language & communication disorders The Brazilian Portuguese thyroidectomy symptom questionnaire grouped patient-reported problems into voice, throat and neck/chest domains. Voice symptoms formed the largest group, but throat and neck/chest items overlapped. SLP Other 2026 Clinician Perceptions of Phonatory-Respiratory Kinematic Patterns in Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Expert clinicians watching videos of people with muscle tension dysphonia identified respiratory patterns like neck tension and shallow breathing, but could not reliably diagnose the condition. Visual cues alone are insufficient for diagnosis and require objective measurement. SLP Other 2026 Perceiving Physiology from the Voice: Evidence for Physiological Coupling Between Laryngeal and Epilaryngeal Adjustments. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Highly trained listeners identified intended laryngeal configurations from voice with moderate agreement and 68% accuracy. They struggled to distinguish subtle false vocal fold positions and perceived conflicting anatomical combinations as ambiguous or incorrect. SLP Case-Control 2026 Neurobehavioral Assessment of Sensorimotor Function in Autism Using Smartphone Technology. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Smartphone-based tests showed children with autism had reduced sensorimotor gating and higher startle variability than neurotypical peers. Behavioral differences like screen avoidance and vocalizations were also prominent, suggesting digital tools can objectively measure sensory processing differences. SLP Other 2026 Children's Ability to Identify and Describe Dysphonia: A Multimethod Study. International journal of language & communication disorders Children correctly identified dysphonia in other children's voices 70% of the time, but accuracy varied widely. When asked to describe voices, many confused voice quality with speech content or articulation. Clinicians should not assume children understand the difference between voice and speech disorders. SLP Cohort 2026 Clinical predictors of dysphagia in patients with sepsis in a high-complexity hospital: insights for early identification. CoDAS In 35 sepsis patients, those with swallowing problems were more likely to have had prior neurological disease, require tube feeding, and die. Pre-existing neurological conditions and lung infections flagged high risk for dysphagia, warranting early speech therapy screening. PT OT SLP Other 2026 Accuracy of Balloons and Handheld Spirometers as Low-Cost Tools for Measuring Vital Capacity and Air Volume: A Laboratory-Based Validation Study. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) In a lab setting, a $150 digital spirometer and a $1 balloon measured injected air volumes with small, predictable errors compared to expensive clinical equipment. These low-cost tools accurately estimate vital capacity when simple mathematical corrections are applied. SLP Cohort 2026 Quantitative temporal analysis of posterior oral spillage in a dual-task for individuals with Parkinson's disease. CoDAS Swallowing while performing a motor task slowed oral control in people with Parkinson's, but only for thick liquids at small volumes reached statistical significance. This suggests distraction impacts specific swallowing mechanics, not necessarily overall safety, in this small group. SLP Other 2026 Influence of Bolus Location and Age on Timing Measures of Swallowing in Healthy Older Adults. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups In healthy older adults, bolus location varied across swallows. When the bolus was lower at swallow onset, reaction time was longer. Age was linked to slower onset and shorter swallowing intervals on some trials. Do not rely on one swallow. SLP Cohort 2026 Parental Stress and Caregiver Role Modulate Child-Caregiver Prosodic Synchrony in Autism: A Computational Analysis. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Among 26 autistic preschoolers, higher parent stress and father-child interactions were linked to less steady, more fluctuating vocal coordination during play. This was an association, not evidence that changing either improves outcomes. SLP Other 2026 Dyadic synchrony in deaf mothers and hearing infants. Journal of deaf studies and deaf education Most deaf mothers and hearing infants showed adequate or better play; 21% had less warm, less engaged play that may need support. Lower household income was linked to poorer interaction. SLP Case Report 2026 Voice Therapy for Puberphonia in the Adolescent Male: A Clinical Case Study. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Manual laryngeal reposturing rapidly normalized pitch in an adolescent with puberphonia, but only after semi-occluded exercises reduced muscle tension enough for him to tolerate the maneuver. Counseling the family on the social impact of a sudden voice change was essential for successful generalization. OT SLP Other 2026 Flow Characteristics of Barium Thickened Liquids during Swallowing in Healthy Adults. Dysphagia In healthy adults, thicker barium liquids kept the bolus in the mouth at first swallow, while thin liquids often reached the throat. Gum-based thickeners did not consistently change transit times compared with starch-based. PT OT SLP Other 2026 Hands-free control of an assistive robotic arm for high-level paralysis. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Head, tongue, and facial muscle controls let people reach targets with a robotic arm as fast as a hand-operated joystick. Voice control was slower. These hands-free options may offer people with high-level paralysis a safer, cheaper alternative to brain implants. SLP Case-Control 2026 Communicative Adaptations After Laryngectomy: Syntactic Complexity and Gesture Use. International journal of language & communication disorders Laryngectomy patients use comparable syntax and gestures to healthy controls but pause more and speak fewer words. They rely on silent pauses to breathe and plan rather than verbal fillers, which may make it harder to hold the floor in conversation. SLP Pilot 2026 Delivering a Voice Education Program to School-Age Children through the Lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) A STEM-based voice education program significantly increased students' voice care knowledge immediately after training. One year later, scores remained similar to post-training levels, though individual item retention varied. The study was a small pilot without a control group. SLP Other 2026 Performance of Nonlinear Energy Difference Ratio and Voice Type Component Profile Across Phoneme, Relative Sound Pressure Level, and Environment. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation NEDR stayed mostly stable for vowels and voiced fricatives, but changed with /s/, very soft speech, and noise. VTCP moved more with loudness, sound type, and recording environment. Use the same sound and quiet room when interpreting them. SLP Meta-Analysis 2026 Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Speech and Voice Changes in Parkinson's Disease: a Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis. CoDAS Combining six small studies, tDCS did not significantly improve speech or voice in Parkinson's. The overall result was null, with high variability between studies. Do not assume tDCS works for these symptoms based on this evidence. SLP Other 2026 Effects of inspiratory muscle training for 28 days on the voice of women without vocal complaints. CoDAS No perceptual voice change was seen, but acoustic stability and noise measures improved, along with maximum phonation times, diadochokinesis, and self-rated voice quality of life, handicap, and symptoms after 28 days of Respiron training in 22 vocally healthy women. SLP Cohort 2026 The effects of smoking on the dynamic vocal range of male smokers. CoDAS Male smokers had a smaller vocal range than non-smokers, hitting lower top notes and unable to whisper as quietly. Longer smoking history and higher daily cigarette counts were linked to these reductions. This suggests smoking physically limits vocal flexibility. SLP RCT 2026 Implicit and Explicit Voice Training Effects on Speech-on-Speech Perception and Listening Effort. Ear and hearing Neither voice training method improved speech intelligibility. However, both methods reduced listening effort in specific difficult conditions. Explicit training generally required less cognitive load than implicit training. These benefits appeared only when background noise levels were unfavorable, with no overall performance gain. SLP Case-Control 2026 Automated Creak Detection in Spanish Speakers with and without AdLD. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Automated creak percentage was higher in Spanish-speaking individuals with adductor-subtype laryngeal dystonia than controls and glottic insufficiency. It was better at identifying people without dystonia than at finding people with dystonia. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Outcomes of Voice Therapy in Behavioral Voice Disorders: A Scoping Review-Part A. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Across 438 studies of voice therapy for adults with behavioral voice disorders, the measures used most were vocal complaint, laryngeal imaging, self-assessment, acoustic analysis and auditory-perceptual judgment. Aerodynamic testing appeared in only 174 of them, and the authors say the field's assessment habits have barely changed in twenty years. SLP Cohort 2026 Individual, occupational, and dysphonia-related factors in operational and administrative military police officers. CoDAS Operational and administrative military police reported hoarseness, vocal effort and voice-related absence at similar rates, and about 9% of all officers screened as likely to have dysphonia. Operational work meant more noise, more threats and less support at work. SLP Other 2026 Visual Gestures of the Head and Eyebrows Support Prosody Perception for Individuals with Cochlear Implants. Trends in hearing Head nods and eyebrow raises on one word made listeners echo that word in a higher pitch even when the voice carried no emphasis. Cochlear implant users leaned on those gestures more: 37% versus 15% of a real pitch peak's effect. SLP Case-Control 2026 Screening and analysis of the risk of dysphonia based on general and specific screening protocols in teachers with and without voice disorders. CoDAS Teachers with and without voice disorders scored almost the same on both dysphonia risk screening questionnaires, and both groups scored above the high-risk cutoff. Their risk scores did not match how severe their voices sounded. Only hydration and smoking separated the groups, slightly. SLP Other 2026 Effect of speech recognition test presentation on cochlear implant user performance. CoDAS Cochlear implant users scored higher on speech tests when the tester spoke the sentences aloud than when they heard a recording: live voice beat recorded by 15.58 points for words and 19.07 for sentences in quiet. In noise the two came out level. SLP Case Report 2026 Case Report: Tailored automatic speech recognition in global aphasia with dysarthria - a single case proof of concept. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A system trained on one woman's voice recognised her intended word in 72.65% of 936 attempts, against 56.75% for twelve rehabilitation professionals who knew her speech. One patient and a 13-word vocabulary, so not proof it generalises. SLP Survey 2026 Association between the feeling of vocal comfort and social security when wearing a protective mask: a study with transgender people. CoDAS Three quarters of 85 transgender adults said wearing a face mask made them feel socially safer, while just over half found masks uncomfortable. Comfort with the mask was the only thing that predicted feeling safer. SLP Other 2026 Content-based validity evidence of the Acute Voice Fatigue Self-Perception Scale (AFA-Voz Scale). CoDAS A new scale asks voice users to rate right now their fatigue, neck or throat discomfort, and limitation in voice use, each from 0 to 10. Five voice experts judged every item fully relevant. It has not been tested with patients, so it is not ready for clinical use. SLP Other 2026 Glottal Area Waveform Measurements for Healthy Female and Male Speakers in Typical, High-Frequency, and Soft Phonation. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR To raise pitch, healthy adults mainly stretched the vocal folds with the cricothyroid muscle. Soft voice needed that plus less firm closure of the folds. Men and women started from different baselines, so normal values differ by sex. SLP Cohort 2026 Turn-Taking and Vocal Coordination in Mother-Child Mixed-Hearing Dyads and the Effect of Home Music Engagement: A Longitudinal Study on Italian Children With Cochlear Implants. International journal of language & communication disorders Mothers of children with cochlear implants responded to them less often than mothers of hearing children, and the implanted children overlapped their mothers' speech more, before and a year after implantation. In that group, more music at home went with shorter, steadier pauses between turns. SLP Cohort 2026 Development and validation of the Brazilian voice bank for various emotions (EMOVOX-BR). CoDAS Ten experienced voice therapists correctly identified the intended emotion in more than 70% of the clips in a new Brazilian Portuguese audio bank of 39 recordings. They relied on pitch for every emotion, and on loudness only for anger. SLP Cohort 2026 Hearing assessment of infants with congenital syphilis. CoDAS No hearing loss was found in infants treated for congenital syphilis. Sixty-one of 65 passed newborn screening and none of the 23 seen at 3 months had abnormal brainstem responses. Most did not return for that check. SLP Other 2026 Interrater reliability in the application of the VPAS-PB: analysis among experienced judges. CoDAS Three experienced raters scored voice qualities consistently across most VPAS-PB adjustments in 10 vocally healthy men, but lip stretching and falsetto did not reach the same standard. Disordered voices and less experienced raters were not tested. SLP Cohort 2026 Combined effect of self-perceived voice disorders and hearing loss on social acts in older adults: a 1-year longitudinal study. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults who reported voice problems went out less over a year, from 4.1 to 3.2 days a week. Those with hearing problems alone showed no significant change. People with both declined too, but that combined result was only marginally significant. SLP Pilot 2026 Respiratory-Swallow Training and Variable Practice in Parkinson's Disease: A Clinical Trial Pilot Study. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Four weekly sessions teaching people with Parkinson's to breathe out before and after swallowing raised the proportion of swallows with that pattern from 38.4% to 71.7%, with less residue and less material entering the airway. There was no untreated control group. SLP Other 2026 Forming a choir with total laryngectomized patients. CoDAS Not a study: this describes how one university clinic formed a choir with total laryngectomy patients, with no outcome measures and no comparison group, so it does not show the choir works. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Indicators for evaluating public speaking in adults: a scoping review. CoDAS The rating scales used to judge adult public speaking are mostly homemade: 26 of 35 studies used indicators the researchers wrote themselves rather than a validated tool. Four areas recur anyway: how the talk is structured, nonverbal behaviour, voice, and language. PT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Non-pharmacological Management of Non-productive Chronic Cough in Adults: A Systematic Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Some non-drug treatments improved cough-related quality of life for long-standing dry cough, including speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and CPAP for sleep apnoea. But cough severity, anxiety and depression did not change, and a three-month follow-up of the physiotherapy and speech-language programme found no difference. SLP RCT 2025 The Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) System in Toddlers With Early Indicators of Autism: Test-Retest Reliability and Convergent Validity With Clinical Language Assessments. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Conversational turn counts from an in-home wearable recorder lined up with autistic toddlers' language scores, even after accounting for how much the child vocalized. Plain adult-word and child-vocalization counts did not. Repeat recordings of the same child agreed moderately well. SLP RCT 2025 Pharyngeal Residues Scoring through the Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale (YPRSRS): Efficacy of Training. Dysphagia A 160-minute online course did not bring clinicians' pharyngeal residue scores on FEES videos any closer to expert ratings than untrained colleagues, and agreement between raters did not change. Only pyriform sinus video scores improved within the trained group. SLP RCT 2025 The PD COMM Process Evaluation: Describing Interventions and Implementation in a UK Pragmatic Randomised Controlled Trial of Speech and Language Therapy for People With Parkinson's-Related Dysarthria. International journal of language & communication disorders LSVT was delivered close to protocol: 13 hours 17 minutes of direct therapy on average against 2 hours 44 minutes for standard NHS speech therapy, usually by two or more therapists. The authors say that dosage gap may itself explain the trial result. SLP Systematic Review 2023 Sex and Race Representation in Temporal Bone Histopathology Studies in the United States: A Systematic Review. Ear and hearing Most US temporal bone studies never report the race of the people they examined: 15 of 300 did, and 11 of those 12 had fewer than 34% non-White donors. Sex was reported in 166 of 300 studies. SLP Other 2023 Functional Analysis of Injectable Substance Treatment on Surgically Injured Rabbit Vocal Folds. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No injectable tested in this rabbit study clearly beat saline on vocal fold function: expert ratings of vibration found no significant group differences. Dexamethasone and hyaluronic acid/gelatin lowered fundamental frequency versus saline, which the authors read as softer tissue. Three larynges per group. SLP Other 2026 Hearing Aids Reshape Neural Processing of Emotional Speech Without Improving Emotion Perception. Trends in hearing Hearing aids did not help older adults with hearing loss notice when the emotion in speech changed any better than listening unaided, and both were worse than normal-hearing peers. Aided listening did change which brain areas were engaged. Only 14 hearing-aid users were tested. ← Previous PAGE 16 OF 17 Next →
