SLP Protocol 2026 A Conceptual Framework and Treatment Taxonomy for Respiratory Lung Volume Training (RLVT). Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A respiratory lung volume training protocol for muscle tension dysphonia is described in detail, but trial evidence that it improves voice is not yet available. SLP Pilot 2026 Effects of Back Pressure on the Feasibility and Tolerability of Laryngeal Diadochokinetic Exercise: A Pilot Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Healthy adults tolerated laryngeal diadochokinesis against 0 and 5 cm H2O back pressure, completing nearly all trials. At 10 and 15 cm H2O, lightheadedness and difficulty rose sharply, with most failing to complete trials against 15 cm H2O. SLP Cohort 2026 Longitudinal Evaluation of Cepstral Peak Prominence in Children. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Cepstral peak prominence scores rise with age in children, but the increase is flat before age five and steeper after. A low score in a young child may reflect normal vocal immaturity rather than pathology. Interpret scores against age-specific norms, not adult standards. SLP Other 2026 Relationships Between Vocal Fold Adduction Patterns, Vocal Acoustic Quality, and Vocal Effort in Individuals With and Without Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation The video measure of vocal fold squeeze did not separate people with muscle tension dysphonia or vocal fold lesions from healthy controls. Both groups reported more effort, and muscle tension dysphonia had lower voice quality. Squeeze alone did not explain effort. SLP Other 2026 A Chaotic Approach to Glottal Gap Voice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In excised dog larynges, larger glottal gaps increased signal irregularity (D2) but only markedly worsened acoustic quality (CPP) at the widest gap tested. Harmonics-to-noise ratio failed to track gap size reliably. This is an ex-vivo mechanical study, not clinical evidence. SLP Survey 2025 Anxiety, Depression, and Other Factors Associated With Voice Handicaps in Active Older People During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Among 91 active older adults surveyed during the pandemic, those with high trait anxiety were more likely to report voice handicaps than those with low anxiety. Older age was also linked to greater voice handicap. Most participants reported low anxiety and no voice handicap. PT OT SLP Cohort 2025 Swallowing Evaluation in Post-COVID-19 Patients with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia. Dysphagia Post-COVID patients who failed swallowing screening early after discharge had high rates of aspiration and silent aspiration. Those screened weeks later had far fewer abnormalities. Higher EAT-10 scores and respiratory rates predicted aspiration risk. SLP Other 2025 What Makes Iconic Pitch Associations "Natural": The Effect of Age on Affective Meanings of Uptalk and Creak. Language and speech Listeners rated young women using uptalk as less confident and competent than those using creak or neutral speech. However, older listeners judged creaky speech as more annoying and less educated than neutral speech, while younger listeners did not. SLP Cohort 2026 Phonemic simplification in apraxia of speech and aphasia with phonemic paraphasia. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Phonemic simplification occurs in both apraxia of speech and aphasia with phonemic paraphasia. It is not specific to apraxia and cannot reliably distinguish the two groups. Severity of speech errors drives simplification more than diagnosis. PT OT SLP Pilot 2025 Promoting agency and communication through powered mobility: a single-group, repeated measures intervention using the explorer mini in toddlers with motor disabilities. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Ten toddlers with motor disabilities used a powered mobility device for 12 sessions. They showed significant gains in cognition and receptive language on standardized tests, and increased joyful vocalizations during play, though expressive language changes were mixed. SLP Narrative Review 2025 A Frank Assessment of SHANK: Impacts of Pathogenic Variations in SHANK3 on Preclinical Models of Phelan McDermid Syndrome. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research SHANK3 mouse models show social, vocalization, repetitive, anxiety-like, motor and brain changes linked to Phelan McDermid Syndrome. No human therapy outcomes are reported. SLP Cohort 2026 Possible Clinical Predictors for Dysphagia in Head and Neck Cancer Patients after Surgery. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Seven bedside checks for swallowing problems in head and neck cancer patients missed most cases. Sensitivity was too low to rely on them, so these signs should not be used alone to screen for dysphagia after surgery. SLP Qualitative 2026 Voice-Assisted Technology for People With Parkinson's Disease Experiencing Speech and Voice Difficulties: Co-Designing Solutions Using Design Thinking. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies People with Parkinson's and therapists co-designed solutions to make smart speakers usable for speech therapy. They identified education gaps and requested specific features like prompts for volume, clearer feedback, and privacy controls to support home practice. SLP Survey 2026 Why do teachers with voice disorders keep teaching? Insights from applications of social capital motives. Logopedics, phoniatrics, vocology Teachers who kept working with voice disorders prioritized maintaining their income above all else. Those with worse perceived voice quality or more frequent symptoms were less motivated by altruism or a sense of belonging, suggesting vocal strain erodes the emotional rewards of teaching. PT OT SLP Cohort 2025 An elective two-week interdisciplinary acute rehabilitation program improves functional and speech outcomes in patients with Parkinson's disease. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Patients with Parkinson's disease in a two-week inpatient program improved mobility, self-care, and voice. Gains were seen regardless of age, disease duration, or medication dose. No control group means natural progression or other factors cannot be ruled out. SLP Meta-Analysis 2025 Bibliometric analysis, systematic review of literature, and meta-analysis on the effect of amplification on voice production among teachers. Journal of communication disorders Voice amplification did not significantly reduce vocal strain metrics like pitch, loudness, or phonation time in teachers. Evidence remains inconclusive due to varied study designs and devices, so amplification alone is not a proven solution for voice disorders. SLP Narrative Review 2025 Vestibular Loss and Cerebellar Ataxia: A Practical Approach. Ear and hearing This paper describes how to tell apart vestibular and cerebellar causes of dizziness. It lists signs and tests but reports no patient outcomes or treatment results, so it offers no new evidence to act on. PT OT SLP Other 2025 Mapping 74 years in acoustic analysis of voice disorders: A bibliometric review and future research directions. Journal of communication disorders A bibliometric analysis of 1,253 studies shows acoustic voice assessment research has grown rapidly, driven by remote monitoring and machine learning. While Parkinson's disease is heavily studied, voice changes in dementia, ALS, and depression remain under-researched despite their clinical relevance. SLP Cohort 2025 The Relationship Between Linguistic Input and Communication Outcomes in Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss: The Impact of Device Fitting. Ear and hearing Conversational turn-taking with caregivers predicted better language and listening skills in children with unilateral hearing loss. Hearing aid or implant fitting did not change this relationship, nor did how consistently the device was worn. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2026 Perceptions of People With Intellectual Disabilities on Autonomy and Decision-Making in Daily Life: A Systematic Review and Synthesis of Qualitative Studies. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR People with intellectual disabilities described being excluded from everyday decisions by family and staff who assumed they knew best. They valued support that listened and guided rather than restricted, but felt their own preferences were often ignored in favour of service rules. PT SLP Pilot 2025 Expiratory Muscle Strength Training to Improve Voice and Respiratory Outcomes After Laryngectomy: A Feasibility Study. International journal of language & communication disorders Ten people who had a laryngectomy completed expiratory muscle strength training using a hand-held device at their stoma. All finished the five-week programme, but most needed simple equipment tweaks to stop air leaks. Lung pressure and voice loudness improved, yet clinicians saw no change in voice quality. SLP Other 2026 Perceptual Style-Shifting Across Singing and Speech: Music Activates Pop Song English for NZ Listeners. Language and speech New Zealand listeners expect an American-influenced accent when hearing singing. They identify ambiguous vowels as sung rather than spoken, and process American voices faster than local voices when music is present. SLP Other 2026 Alpha-Synuclein Lesions in the Peripheral Nervous System of the Larynx in Parkinson's Disease. Dysphagia Parkinson’s larynx tissue from 20 postmortem cases showed alpha-synuclein lesions in nerves, muscles, and mucosa. Speech severity matched these laryngeal changes; swallowing severity did not. These are tissue findings, not treatment evidence. SLP Other 2026 Short-Term Evaluation of the APrevent® VOIS Implant: Outcomes at 7 Weeks Post-Implantation. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) A new adjustable implant for vocal fold paralysis improved voice quality and closure in 32 patients at 7 weeks. Postoperative adjustments were possible without surgery. Results are short-term and lack a control group, so long-term stability remains unknown. SLP Cohort 2026 Swallowing Guidance with FEES May Alleviate Symptoms in Functional Dysphagia. Dysphagia FEES, video explanation, and swallowing guidance lowered median EAT-10 scores in all patients and in functional dysphagia, but 40% reported relief, 50% no change, and quality of life did not improve. SLP Systematic Review 2025 Acoustic Metrics of the Strain Dimension of Voice Quality: A Scoping Review. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No single acoustic measure reliably identifies vocal strain. Spectral sharpness and relative fundamental frequency show promise but lack specificity. Clinicians should use multiple acoustic metrics alongside perceptual ratings to assess strain, rather than relying on one instrument. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Pharyngolaryngeal Abnormalities viewed via nasoendoscopy associated with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Adults: A Scoping Review. Dysphagia Scoping review of 117 articles links specific pharyngolaryngeal abnormalities seen on FEES to dysphagia. Unilateral vocal fold impairment and edema show consistent associations with aspiration. Most other abnormalities lack statistical evidence, so treat FEES findings as part of a broader assessment rather than definitive causes. PT OT SLP Cohort 2025 The Effect of Genotype on Self-Reported Dysarthria and Dysphagia in Parkinson's Disease: A Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative Study. International journal of language & communication disorders Patients with SNCA and GBA mutations self-reported worse speech and swallowing problems than those with LRRK2 mutations after the first two years. All groups started with similar mild symptoms. Motor phenotype did not predict these self-reported communication or swallowing difficulties. SLP Case Report 2025 Toward Acoustic-Based Normalization of Laryngeal EMG for Improved Interspeaker Consistency in Muscle-to-Acoustic Mapping. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In a single healthy voice user, acoustic-based EMG normalization made laryngeal muscle-to-pitch maps more consistent across four sessions than peak-based normalization. The method is not yet ready for clinical use. SLP RCT 2025 Effects of Body Posture on Voice Range Profile Performance in Untrained Vocally Healthy Individuals. International journal of language & communication disorders Sitting or standing does not change Voice Range Profile results in healthy untrained adults. Clinicians can measure in either position without affecting reliability. Repeating the test immediately caused no training effect, so the order of postures does not bias the data. SLP Case-Control 2025 Maternal Linguistic Input to Infants Born to Mothers With and Without Postpartum Psychosis and Infant Language Skills: A Preliminary Study. American journal of speech-language pathology Mothers with recent postpartum psychosis gave less verbal input to their infants than controls. However, their infants showed no differences in language skills at 6 to 12 months. This pilot suggests a gap in interaction, but not yet in the child's development. SLP Pilot 2026 Super-Supraglottic Swallow Combined with Head Flexion Strengthens Laryngeal Closure. Dysphagia Adding head flexion to the super-supraglottic swallow significantly shortened the distance between the epiglottis and arytenoid in healthy adults, increasing complete laryngeal closure. However, participants found the combined maneuver harder to perform than the super-supraglottic swallow alone. SLP Other 2026 Palpation as a Method To Predict Spatial Instrumental Hyolaryngeal Excursion Measures. Dysphagia Trained SLPs could use finger palpation to predict reduced upward hyolaryngeal movement, but not forward movement. More swallows per bolus and thin liquid also tracked upward movement. This supports palpation for vertical elevation only. SLP Cohort 2025 An Observational Study of Discourse Tasks and Running Speech Sampling in the Assessment of Paediatric Voice Quality. International journal of language & communication disorders Narrative tasks like story retelling yielded consistent speech samples and voice quality matching conversation. The standard voice question failed in 47% of children, and reading passages were difficult for half. Use narratives to ensure participation and reliable voice assessment. SLP Pilot 2025 Demographic and Acoustic Factors related to Automatic Speech Recognition Inaccuracies for Child African American English Speakers. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Google's speech-to-text was about 40% inaccurate for these children regardless of whether they used African American English features. Age drove the errors, not dialect. Do not assume the technology fails because of a patient's accent; it likely fails because they are young. SLP Other 2025 Voice-Assisted Technology as a Potential Tool for Addressing Speech and Voice Concerns Experienced by People With Parkinson's Disease and Other Conditions Presenting With Dysarthria: A Scoping Review. International journal of language & communication disorders Off-the-shelf smart speakers may encourage clearer, louder speech in people with dysarthria, but recognition is unreliable and varies by severity. Therapists should use them cautiously for home practice, not as assessment tools, watching for frustration and bias. SLP Other 2025 Comparison of functional aspects and quality of life before and after using the heat and moisture exchange in total laryngectomy patients. CoDAS After using a heat and moisture exchange filter for two to four weeks, laryngectomy patients reported better sleep, less cough-related distress, and improved emotional voice perception. Swallowing quality of life did not change. SLP Case Report 2025 Comparison of gesture-vocal synchrony and gestures of two children aged 3 to 26 months with and without autism spectrum disorder. CoDAS In two infants, the child with autism showed lower gesture-speech synchrony, reduced eye contact, and more discomfort than the neurotypical child. Their gestures were similar in type but differed in frequency and quality. This describes two cases, not a treatment effect. PT OT SLP Case Report 2026 Rapid Bolus Inflow into the Esophagus in a Patient with a Tracheostomy after Surgical Treatment for Dysphagia. Dysphagia A patient with an open tracheostomy spontaneously developed a swallowing method that sucked food into the esophagus using negative pressure. This allowed him to resume a normal oral diet, though the treatment involved multiple surgeries and therapies at once. SLP Other 2025 Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: comparison with older people with dysphagia and relationship with time since diagnosis. CoDAS In dysphagic patients, those with ALS had more thin-liquid leakage, residue, penetration and aspiration than older dysphagic adults without neurological disease. Diagnosis for more than 3 years was linked to response starting in the pyriform sinuses, moderate residues and need for an alternative feeding route. SLP Cohort 2025 Dysphonia coping strategies, vocal handicap and anxiety/depression symptoms in pre and post-thyroidectomy patients. CoDAS Twenty thyroidectomy patients reported mild vocal handicap and used emotion-focused coping more than problem-focused, but the scores did not change significantly across preoperative, one-week, and three-month visits. Anxiety and depression were lower at one week, then rose slightly by three months. OT SLP Qualitative 2026 The voice within: an online ethnography on the experiences of Deaf students in a public high school in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Journal of deaf studies and deaf education Deaf students in the Philippines relied on visual communication and peer support to navigate online classes, but faced isolation and learning barriers when teachers prioritized hearing students' pacing and lacked accessible materials like captions. SLP Survey 2025 Vocal and auditory symptoms and self-perception of voice and hearing in voice actors. CoDAS Most voice actors reported hearing issues, but few screened positive for voice disorders. Throat clearing was the only symptom linked to both hearing loss and voice disorder risk. Energy drink use correlated with vocal strain and poor hearing perception. SLP Qualitative 2026 Self-Experienced Difficulties in Communicative Participation in Children With Speech, Language and Communication Needs-A Concept Elicitation Study. International journal of language & communication disorders Children identified 44 specific barriers to communication, including partner characteristics, noisy locations, and the pace of conversation. Younger children and those with language disorders struggled to reflect on these experiences. These concepts serve as conversation starters for goal setting, not tested interventions. SLP Other 2025 Voice Outcomes of Clear Speech Cueing in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Clear speech cueing in Parkinson's disease increased vocal intensity and pitch variation, and reduced perceived breathiness. However, changes in voice quality metrics like CPP were driven by intensity, not actual improvement, and overall dysphonia severity did not change. SLP Pilot 2025 Neural auditory encoding and performance in speech-in-noise perception: a pilot study. CoDAS Faster and larger neural responses to a /DA/ syllable were associated with better speech-in-noise scores in 28 young native Brazilian Portuguese speakers, especially for consonant timing and vowel encoding. SLP Other 2025 Breath-Holding Maneuvers and Airway Closure in Healthy Adults and Parkinson's Disease: Effects of Maneuver Type, Health Status, and Vocal Fold Bowing. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Hard breath-holds achieved complete airway closure far more often than light ones in both healthy adults and people with Parkinson's. Light holds failed to close the airway in nearly half of participants, suggesting clinicians should verify closure visually rather than assume it. SLP Other 2025 Incidence and nature of functional voice disorders. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings At a South African voice clinic, 86 of 516 adults had a functional voice disorder. Muscle tension dysphonia, hoarseness, high voice handicap scores and reflux were common. Occupational and non-occupational voice users were similar on the comparisons made. OT SLP Case Series 2026 Appropriateness and Impact of a Vocal Cord Vibration Switch for Children with Complex Communication Needs: Case Series. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Three children with complex communication needs used a vocal cord vibration switch for two years. Mothers and teachers reported lower effort and higher satisfaction compared to previous devices, and all three children continued using the switch after the main study period. PT OT SLP Survey 2026 Bringing the Computer-Based Instrument for Low Motor Language Testing to Canada: A Survey of Caregiver and Clinician Perspectives. International journal of language & communication disorders Canadian caregivers and clinicians say current language comprehension assessments for children with cerebral palsy lack accuracy, creating a critical gap. Both groups view the new C-BiLLT-CAN tool as highly promising, but flag that it currently lacks the response methods, like auditory access and specific switches, that many children need to actually complete the test. ← Previous PAGE 15 OF 17 Next →
