SLP Survey 2025 Prevalence and associated factors of voice symptoms among Mexican prospective teachers: A cross-sectional study. Journal of communication disorders Prevalence of voice symptoms in prospective teachers varied widely by tool, from 9.13% to 54.60%. Perceived dust in placement classrooms was consistently linked to higher symptom reports. Third-year students and those in active placements reported more discomfort. SLP Other 2025 Auditory Learning and Generalization in Older Adults: Evidence from Voice Discrimination Training. Trends in hearing Three sessions of voice training improved pitch-based voice discrimination in older adults as much as in young adults. Older adults did not improve on formant-based voice cues, and combined pitch and formant cues showed no training advantage. SLP Other 2025 Bioenergetic Theory and Score Analyses: Preliminary Application to Four Soprano Solos. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Analysing four soprano scores through a sports-science lens showed that vocal demand varies widely and is not always obvious by ear. A slow song required anaerobic bursts, while a fast one needed mixed energy systems. This offers a framework for tailoring vocal conditioning, but has not been tested in singers. SLP Other 2025 ABCD: A Simulation Method for Accelerating Conversational Agents With Applications in Aphasia Therapy. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR In simulated aphasia therapy sessions, an AI agent using simple zero-shot prompts with topics achieved slightly better conversation flow than one using complex step-by-step prompts with pictures. The agent remained grammatically accurate and on-topic regardless of the type of speech errors it encountered. SLP Other 2025 Acoustic Analysis of Blues, Country, Folk, Italian Opera, and Rock Singing. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Singing samples across genres were less steady and more irregular than healthy sustained speech. Rock showed more irregular acoustic results than folk and Italian opera. SLP Qualitative 2025 Speech and language therapists' perceptions of corporate practice in South Africa. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Seven South African therapists with no corporate experience viewed workplace speech therapy as a way to bridge cultural gaps in diverse teams. They felt unprepared for business roles and worried the service would be seen as an elite product only for high earners. SLP Qualitative 2025 Between Necessity and Feasibility: A Qualitative Study on How Clinicians Navigate Bedside Voice Assessment. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation SLPs said acute care prioritizes swallowing over voice, so bedside voice assessment is often delayed. They rely on listening, patient reports, phone recordings and voice tasks, with little standardized protocol, despite patient concern about voice. OT SLP Case Report 2025 Complex ADHD in a Child With Tic Disorder. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP A child with ADHD and new-onset tics illustrates the clinical dilemma of balancing medication efficacy against side effects. Management involves distinguishing tics from stimming, considering alpha-2 agonists or CBIT, and prioritizing functional impact over symptom suppression. SLP Other 2025 Delineating Effects of Stress-Analogous, Low-Dose Cortisol Exposure on Human Vocal Fold Fibroblasts. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In lab-grown human vocal fold cells, stress-level cortisol exposure for one week altered gene activity, increasing fibrosis markers and glucocorticoid signaling while reducing inflammation. When combined with bacterial toxins, inflammation increased. These are cellular mechanisms, not clinical patient outcomes. SLP Other 2025 Validation of a Python-Based Graphical User Interface for Calculation of Relative Fundamental Frequency. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new free software tool calculates voice tension measures just as accurately as the expensive, complex version it replaces. It requires no coding skills and runs on standard computers, making objective voice assessment easier to access for clinics and research labs. SLP Other 2025 Normative Thresholds for Acoustic Estimates of Relative Fundamental Frequency. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In typical adults, offset RFF was lower with age, and onset RFF differed by sex. OFF10 cutoffs are -2.73, -3.33, and -3.58 semitones for ages 18-39, 40-64, and 65+; ON1 cutoffs are 0.89 for males and -0.03 for females. SLP Other 2025 Exploring Objective Correlates to Perceived Severity in the Covarying Breathy, Rough, and Strained Voice Qualities of Dysphonic Voices. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No single objective measure captures all voice qualities. Pitch strength best tracked breathiness and strain, while temporal envelope measures and cepstral peak prominence were needed to accurately rank roughness. SLP Other 2025 Acoustic-prosodic measures discriminate the emotions of Brazilian portuguese speakers. CoDAS Acoustic measures of duration, pitch, and intensity reliably distinguish six basic emotions in Brazilian Portuguese. Disgust showed the longest duration and slowest speech rate, while joy had the shortest duration and highest intensity. Fear had the greatest pitch variability, and sadness had the lowest pitch and intensity. SLP Other 2025 The Time Course of the Pupillary Response to Auditory Emotions in Pseudospeech, Music, and Vocalizations. Trends in hearing Emotional pseudospeech and music produced larger pupil dilation than neutral sounds. In vocalizations, sadness produced the largest sustained response, but fear and anger did not differ from neutral. SLP Other 2025 Using a Vortex Whistle System to Estimate Phonatory Airflow via the Phonation Quotient. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A low-cost 3-D printed vortex whistle system estimates phonatory airflow as accurately as expensive clinical equipment in healthy adults. It correlates strongly with standard pneumotach measures, offering speech-language pathologists a viable way to add objective airflow data to voice assessments without high costs. SLP Other 2025 Release from Speech-on-Speech Masking: Additivity of Segregation Cues and Build-Up of Segregation. Trends in hearing With competing talkers, more cues made target speech easier to hear, and reporting one word was easier than reporting four. The cue benefit changed with the reporting task. SLP Other 2025 Masked-speech Recognition Using Human and Synthetic Cloned Speech. Trends in hearing Overall, synthetic voice clones were understood about as well as the human voices they copied, and listeners often could not tell them apart. Some individual voices differed, and nonsense sentences were harder than meaningful ones. SLP Other 2025 Voice Familiarization Training Improves Speech Intelligibility and Reduces Listening Effort. Trends in hearing Training normal-hearing adults to recognize unfamiliar voices for 10 to 60 minutes improved speech-in-noise accuracy by 13-15% and lowered self-reported effort. Pupillary responses only decreased after 60 minutes of training. These findings apply to healthy young adults, not hearing-impaired patients. SLP Qualitative 2025 Exploring Speech and Language Therapists' Perspectives of Voice-Assisted Technology as a Tool for Dysarthria: Qualitative Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Seven UK speech therapists found smart speakers useful for home practice because the devices give objective feedback without judgment. However, they reported clients became frustrated when the technology failed to understand their speech or timed out during exercises. SLP Pilot 2026 Brief Report: Quantifying Speech Production Coordination from Non- and Minimally-Speaking Individuals. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Caregiver-labelled vocalizations from seven non- or minimally-speaking people showed distinct movement patterns: dysregulated sounds had more variable pitch than frustrated, while request, delight, and self-talk used more mouth movement and more tightly coupled pitch and breathing. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2026 "Shutdowns Are Like You're Stuck on the Blue Screen of Death": A Metaphor Analysis of Autistic Shutdowns. Autism in adulthood Autistic adults described shutdowns using six metaphors: being frozen, a computer crash, going inside myself, can't keep up, survival mode, and playing a role. These terms highlight the internal, physical, and protective nature of the experience, offering a shared language for clinicians to understand patient distress. SLP Meta-Analysis 2026 Early Identification of Autism Using Cry Analysis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Retrospective and Prospective Studies. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Pooled data from six studies found no significant difference in infant cry pitch between those later diagnosed with autism and typically developing infants. While some individual studies noted higher pitch, the overall evidence does not support using cry analysis to identify autism early. SLP Systematic Review 2026 Harmonizing Identities: A Scoping Review on Voice and Communication Supports and Challenges for Autistic Trans and Gender Diverse Individuals. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic trans and gender diverse people face communication barriers that delay care and harm wellbeing, yet most existing supports focus on general communication rather than voice. Speech pathologists lack specific guidance to address these unique needs, creating a significant gap in effective, affirming clinical practice. PT OT SLP Survey 2025 Otolaryngologic Symptom Severity Post SARS-CoV-2 Infection. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Four hundred and seventy post-COVID patients reported that hospitalization was linked to worse breathing and cough symptoms, which often lingered or worsened over a year. Voice and swallowing problems remained mild and below clinical thresholds, regardless of how sick the patient was. SLP Other 2025 The Adaption to Online Synchronous Teaching and Voice Fatigue: Acoustic and Clinical Data. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation University teachers showed more voice fatigue signs during online pandemic teaching, including higher pitch and creak. After partly returning to classroom or hybrid teaching, fatigue improved but did not fully return to prepandemic levels. SLP Other 2025 Voice Acoustic Instability During Spontaneous Speech in Parkinson's Disease. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In people with Parkinson's disease, average pitch and pitch variability fell over the course of both reading and picture description. The fall did not differ by cognitive impairment. SLP Case Series 2026 Outcomes of Gender-Affirming Voice and Communication Modification Training for Non-binary Individuals: A Case Series. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Four non-binary clients showed mixed results after 12 weeks of voice training. Pitch changes did not consistently match satisfaction scores. One client improved in both areas. The other three improved in some tasks but not others. This shows the need for goals based on client preference rather than standard acoustic targets. SLP RCT 2025 The Effect of Maximum Phonation Time Goal on Efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Knowing your maximum phonation time goal did not significantly change improvement compared to not knowing it in healthy adults. All groups improved after six weeks of vocal exercises, regardless of whether the goal was given at the start, delayed, or withheld. SLP Case-Control 2025 Relationship Between Vocal Fatigue Index and Acoustic Voice Scales in Patients With Coronavirus Infection. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Patients recovering from COVID-19 reported significantly higher vocal fatigue than healthy controls, with tiredness and physical discomfort correlating with acoustic voice measures like jitter and shimmer. This suggests voice therapy may be needed for post-COVID dysphonia. SLP Other 2025 Laying the Groundwork to Study the Heterogeneous Nature of Vocal Fatigue. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This paper proposes a research framework for studying vocal fatigue. It does not report clinical results or test any treatments, so it offers no evidence to change how you assess or treat patients with voice fatigue. SLP Cohort 2025 Acoustic-Aerodynamic Voice Outcome Ratios Identify Changes in Vocal Function Following Vocal Fold Medialization for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Vocal fold medialization significantly improved airflow and sound output in 149 patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. The ratio of sound pressure level to airflow detected these changes most effectively and consistently, regardless of how loudly the patient tried to speak. SLP Case Report 2025 Increased Incidence of Ulcerative Laryngitis During Spring 2022 Omicron-Variant Wave of COVID19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Four vocal performers developed ulcerative laryngitis in spring 2022, a spike the authors link to the omicron wave. They recovered faster than a previous group, likely because they sought help sooner. This does not prove any specific treatment works. SLP Narrative Review 2025 Vocal Fold Vertical Thickness in Human Voice Production and Control: A Review. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Vocal fold vertical thickness, not just the gap seen from above, strongly shapes glottal closure and voice quality. Voice clinicians should consider medial surface shape when assessing voice disorders or planning intervention. SLP Cohort 2025 Interoception, Voice Symptom Reporting, and Voice Disorders. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Patients with functional voice disorders who report worse voice symptoms also struggle to attend to body sensations. They do not differ from healthy people in overall interoceptive awareness, but those with muscle tension dysphonia show lower emotional awareness of bodily cues. SLP Other 2026 Association Between Bilingualism, Vocal Effort, and Background Noise With Voice Fundamental Frequency and LTAS Among Spanish-English Bilingual Teachers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Spanish-English teachers produced a higher pitch when reading in their native Spanish than in English. However, model analysis showed pitch increased when reading in English. Background noise also raised pitch. These acoustic shifts were linked to perceived effort. The study involved only eight teachers. SLP Other 2026 Screening of Voice Pathologies: Identifying the Predictive Value of Voice Acoustic Parameters for Common Voice Pathologies. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A combination of five acoustic measures correctly identified 8 out of 10 people with voice disorders, but only 4 out of 10 healthy people. This high sensitivity makes it useful for screening, but the low specificity means many normal voices would be falsely flagged. SLP Other 2026 Effects of Vibratory Source on Auditory-Perceptual and Bio-Inspired Computational Measures of Pediatric Voice Quality. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Children using supraglottic structures for voice production had significantly rougher and more strained voices than those using true vocal folds, but breathiness did not differ. Roughness is the key marker for this group, not breathiness. SLP Case Series 2026 Auditory-Motor Function Pre- and Post-Therapy in Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders: A Case Series. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation After individualized voice therapy, all five patients who had unusual voice pitch feedback responses improved. Pitch discrimination improved in some. Ten of eleven reported fewer voice problems, but no control group means therapy effects are uncertain. SLP Narrative Review 2025 An Introduction to the Science of Information Transfer, Uncertainty, and a Personal View of Organizational Intelligence. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This article uses voice science to explain entropy and information theory, then extends these physics concepts to personal views on social organization and intelligence. It contains no clinical data, patient outcomes, or evidence to guide therapy. SLP Other 2025 Patient Profiling: Determining the Effects of Patient Factors on Vocal Fatigue. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation How much a voice disorder impacts a patient's life predicts their vocal fatigue severity. However, knowing a patient's age, gender, diagnosis type, singing background, or body awareness does not help predict how fatigued their voice will feel. SLP Systematic Review 2025 Mapping the Landscape of Voice Complaints among Teachers: A Bibliometric Investigation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Research on teacher voice complaints has tripled since 2000, with Brazil and the USA producing nearly half of all papers. Studies focus on vocal demand, health promotion, and the Voice Handicap Index. This maps existing knowledge rather than testing treatments. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2025 The Health-related Quality of Life and Voice Handicap Index in Recovered COVID-19 Patients in Comparison to Healthy Subjects. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Recovered COVID-19 patients reported significantly worse quality of life and higher voice handicap than healthy subjects two months post-discharge. Voice problems correlated strongly with poor physical and mental health scores in patients but not in healthy controls. SLP Systematic Review 2026 A Systematic Review of Speech-Language Pathology Interventions for Presbyphonia Using the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice therapy for older adults with age-related voice change improved patients' reported voice handicap, increased how long they could sustain a sound, and made voice less irregular. Strength or resistance-based approaches showed the largest gain in sustain time. SLP Other 2026 A Novel Low-Cost, Open-Source, Three-Dimensionally Printed Thyroplasty Simulator. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Eight laryngology experts rated a new low-cost 3D-printed thyroplasty simulator highly for educational value and overall worth. They found it useful for practicing vocal fold medialization, though silicone elasticity and sex-specific anatomy need refinement. SLP RCT 2026 Effect of Clinical Expertise on Efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises in Individuals With Typical Voice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Novice clinicians achieved the same voice improvement as an expert with 40 years' experience in people with typical voices. You do not need to be a voice specialist to deliver these exercises effectively, but this does not prove it for patients with voice disorders. SLP Other 2026 Does Implicit Racial Bias Affect Auditory-Perceptual Evaluations of Dysphonic Voices? Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Novice clinicians rated voices as less severely dysphonic when labeled Black, regardless of the speaker's actual race. The difference was small, about 2 to 3 points on a 100-point scale, but could affect diagnosis in mild cases. SLP Other 2026 Deep Learning-Based Analysis of Glottal Attack and Offset Times in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation An automated tool measured vocal fold timing at the start and end of speech. People with adductor laryngeal dystonia had longer start delays than normal speakers, but end delays did not differ. This is early technical work, not a diagnostic test. SLP Other 2025 Relationships Between Laryngoscopic Analysis Metrics of Supraglottic Compression and Vocal Effort in Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Supraglottic compression appeared in both voice-disordered and healthy occupational voice users. False vocal fold compression was more severe in muscle tension dysphonia, but it did not correspond to self-reported vocal effort. SLP Survey 2025 Dysphonia and Throat Clearing in Singers During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Singers who caught COVID-19 reported more voice impairment and throat clearing than those who did not. Increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic was also linked to new throat clearing. These findings rely on self-reported symptoms in an online survey. SLP Qualitative 2026 Persuasion Through Focus Groups: Helping Teachers Maintain Healthy Voices. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers who joined online voice-health focus groups later recalled voice as a working tool and reported resting it, lowering volume, and discussing vocal strain with colleagues. This describes self-reported learning, not proof a voice programme works. ← Previous PAGE 14 OF 17 Next →
