SLP Case-Control 2024 How Do Quantitative Videofluoroscopy Measures Differ Between People With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Age-Matched Healthy Adults? Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR People with early ALS showed significantly slower hyoid movement across all liquid thicknesses compared to healthy adults. They also had more frequent issues with airway closure and multiple swallows per sip, particularly on thinner liquids. These differences were not seen in healthy adults. SLP Other 2024 Connecting Auditory-Perceptual Prompts Used in Voice Therapy to Anatomy and Physiology: Application to the Estill Voice Model and the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This paper is a theoretical framework linking voice therapy prompts to anatomy using hypothetical cases. It contains no actual patient data or outcome results, so there is nothing here to change your clinical practice on. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2024 Linking the impact of aspiration to host variables using the BOLUS framework: support from a rapid review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Poor oral health and the presence of feeding or tracheostomy tubes strongly increase the risk of pulmonary complications in patients with aspiration. However, there is insufficient evidence to link aspiration of thick liquids to pneumonia or to predict mortality, so decisions on diet texture and NPO status remain complex. SLP Cohort 2024 Laryngeal photobiomodulation: application sites, interferences from body mass index and skin phototype. CoDAS Red laser light reliably reached the vocal fold front and cricothyroid muscle in all participants, but body fat reduced light intensity while darker skin increased it. This suggests clinicians must adjust laser settings based on patient anatomy. SLP Survey 2024 Self-perception of voice and knowledge of vocal health and hygiene in Candomblé religious leaders in Brazil. CoDAS Candomblé religious leaders reported voice and throat symptoms at a level associated with voice disorder and singing voice handicap, especially women. Their vocal health knowledge was good, but it was not linked to fewer symptoms. SLP Other 2024 Varying Supraglottic Pressure Using Controlled Supraglottic Pressure Phonation with a Straw-Shaped Mouthpiece in Healthy Subjects. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Controlled supraglottic pressure with a straw mouthpiece did not significantly reduce phonation threshold pressure across groups. No short-task effect appeared; only 2 cm H2O during the long task showed a significant result. SLP Case Report 2024 Case Report: Benefits of LSVT LOUD in a multilingual patient with hypokinetic-hyperkinetic dysarthria and suspected progressive supranuclear palsy. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences One multilingual man with suspected progressive supranuclear palsy had louder, clearer speech after 16 LSVT sessions, and his spouse reported better communication. Three months later, vocal quality and intelligibility remained, but loudness and reported communication benefit did not. SLP Other 2024 Pharyngeal phase of swallowing in post-stroke dysphagia: videoendoscopy and speech-language-hearing assessment. CoDAS Chronic stroke patients with swallowing complaints showed more tongue weakness, food left in the throat after swallowing, and food entering below the vocal folds than dysphagia patients without stroke, including with thickened liquids and solid food. SLP Other 2024 Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ): Development of a Questionnaire to Assess Training-Related Voice Symptoms Among Prospective Teachers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation The Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ) is a new tool for student teachers. Pilot testing showed high relevance and clarity. It helps identify voice risks during training, allowing early prevention before they start working in noisy classrooms. SLP Other 2024 The Impact of Trained Conditions on the Generalization of Learning Gains Following Voice Discrimination Training. Trends in hearing Gains from voice discrimination training did not transfer better than no training for combined voice cues, although the trained task itself improved. Only training with background noise improved sentence recognition in noise more than no training, so the training environment mattered. SLP Other 2024 Supraglottic Laryngeal Maneuvers in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia During Connected Speech. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation During connected speech, people with adductor laryngeal dystonia had their vocal folds blocked by laryngeal tissues more often and for longer than adults with typical voices on high-speed videoendoscopy, with six participants in each group. SLP Case-Control 2024 Laryngeal and Global Somatosensation in Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation People with primary muscle tension dysphonia rated touch inside the voice box and voice symptoms as more severe than healthy controls, but reflexes, neck and limb pressure tests, and central sensitization questionnaire scores did not differ. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Did the speech of patients with Myasthenia Gravis decline over 4 years? CoDAS Speech worsened over four years in stable Myasthenia Gravis patients, with more diagnosed with dysarthria. However, patients felt their speech improved. Self-perception is unreliable for monitoring decline, so objective speech assessments are necessary. SLP Pilot 2025 Brief Report: Telehealth Music-Enhanced Reciprocal Imitation Training in Autism: A Single-Subject Feasibility Study of a Virtual Parent Coaching Intervention. Journal of autism and developmental disorders All parents learned to use the music-enhanced autism imitation coaching strategies with fidelity, and they kept using them after online coaching. Children's spontaneous imitation did not consistently increase. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2024 Effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields on bone fractures: a systematic review update. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Pulsed electromagnetic fields did not significantly speed up bone healing in acute fractures. Evidence for pain reduction and functional recovery is contradictory and based on very few studies. Current data does not support using this therapy to improve fracture healing. SLP Qualitative 2024 Development of core sets for deafblindness using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health: the perspectives of individuals with lived experience. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine People with deafblindness and caregivers most often described communication, mobility, social interaction, attitudes, family support, personal assistants, and communication technology as central. These themes can guide assessment and goal setting. SLP Cohort 2025 Foundations of Vocal Category Development in Autistic Infants. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic infants clustered their vocal play (squeals and growls) at the same rate as typically developing infants. The amount of clustering did not predict language skills or autism severity at age two, so this early vocal pattern is not a useful marker for diagnosis. OT SLP Other 2025 K-12 Life Skills Education, Independence, and Employment of Autistic Individuals: Giving Voice to Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults valued job site training and practicing real life skills. They wanted less academic work and more help with social skills, money, and finding jobs. They did not link specific school methods to getting hired. Their experiences highlight gaps in current education. PT OT SLP Other 2025 Validation of the Arabic Version of Feeding Handicap Index for Children with Developmental Disabilities (A-FHI-C). Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of children with autism, cerebral palsy, or intellectual disability reported significantly more severe feeding problems on the new Arabic Feeding Handicap Index than parents of typically developing children. The questionnaire showed strong consistency and stability, making it a reliable tool for assessing feeding impacts in Arabic-speaking families. OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Being able to be myself: Understanding autonomy and autonomy-support from the perspectives of autistic adults with intellectual disabilities. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults with intellectual disabilities defined autonomy as being themselves. They wanted support through choice and control, communicating in their own way, and safe environments. Autistic facilitators were key to interpreting nonverbal cues and building trust. SLP Other 2024 Reliability of Acoustic Measures in Dysphonic Patients With Glottic Insufficiency and Healthy Population: A COVID-19 Perspective. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Most voice measures stay accurate when patients wear masks, so you can continue standard acoustic testing safely. However, masks filter high frequencies, which artificially lowers severity scores based on spectral ratios. Do not directly compare these specific scores between masked and unmasked visits. SLP Other 2024 The Effects of Masked and Delayed Auditory Feedback on Fundamental Frequency Modulation in Vocal Vibrato. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation When classically trained singers could not hear their own voice through pink noise, their vibrato became wider. Babble made the rate less steady. Delaying what they heard did not clearly change it. SLP Other 2024 Self-Perception of Vocal Effort in Response to Modeled Communication Demands. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Healthy young adults reported significantly higher vocal effort when speaking to a partner 4 meters away or in background noise above 62 dBA. Effort also rose when they were asked to speak louder, even if the target volume was within normal range. SLP Other 2024 Eliciting and Characterizing Porcine Vocalizations: When Pigs Fly. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A low-cost pulley system reliably induced consistent squeals in awake pigs, establishing baseline acoustic norms for future laryngeal surgery studies. This method avoids animal training or euthanasia, offering a practical tool for researchers testing voice treatments. SLP Survey 2024 Relationship Between Room Acoustics With Voice Symptoms and Voice-Related Quality of Life Among Colombian School and College Teachers During Online Classes in Times of COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers teaching online during COVID-19 who reported more echo in their room and more stress also reported lower voice-related quality of life. Stress and longer teaching experience were linked to hoarseness. Thirty-two teachers self-reported. SLP Case-Control 2024 Effects of Age and Parkinson's Disease on the Relationship between Vocal Fold Abductory Kinematics and Relative Fundamental Frequency. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Speakers with Parkinson’s disease had lower RFF and longer vocal fold opening, but the RFF difference was not explained by group differences in vocal fold opening. Age did not track RFF, so RFF is not just an abduction measure. SLP Survey 2024 Patient Satisfaction with Virtual vs In-Person Voice Therapy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Patients rated virtual voice therapy during the pandemic as highly as in-person visits before it. Satisfaction was high for both formats, so virtual visits may be acceptable for patients who cannot attend in person. SLP Survey 2025 Factors Influencing Teachers' Experience of Vocal Fatigue and Classroom Voice Amplification. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers who used classroom amplification more often reported more vocal fatigue, not less. This is a link, not proof amplification caused fatigue. SLP Other 2025 Voice Sequelae Following Recovery From COVID-19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Most patients reported mild voice disability after symptomatic COVID-19. Voice analysis showed altered biomechanics, but these patterns were not unique to the virus. The findings mirror changes seen in other infectious laryngitis cases, so acoustic testing cannot diagnose or distinguish post-COVID voice issues. SLP Other 2025 Comparative Analysis of Two Methods of Perceptual Voice Assessment. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Visual Analog Scales (VAS) were more consistent and predictable than Paired Comparisons (PC) for rating children's voice therapy outcomes. Severity and resonance were weakly related, so improved resonance does not guarantee reduced overall voice severity. SLP Survey 2025 Effects of Virtual Instruction on Educators' Voices During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers reported similar vocal discomfort and voice handicap when teaching face-to-face and virtually. Home air quality, posture, and outside voice use were related to vocal discomfort, so the study did not show virtual teaching worsened voices. SLP Other 2025 Stress Effects on Pharyngeal Air Pressure and Upper Esophageal Sphincter Pressure During Phonation: The Influence of Vocal Tract Semi-Occlusion. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Stress raised pressure at the upper esophageal sphincter during plain vowel sounds but not during straw phonation. This suggests semi-occluded exercises may buffer vocal tract pressure changes during stress, though the study was tiny and used cold water pain as the stressor. SLP Survey 2024 The Effect of Online Teaching on Vocal Health Among Saudi Teachers During COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers reported less voice handicap during online teaching than before the pandemic. However, no significant differences in voice scores were found between those teaching remotely versus in-person during the pandemic, suggesting the overall benefit may not be directly attributable to the teaching mode alone. SLP Other 2024 The Effect of Water Resistance Therapy on the Impulse Dispersion of Aerosols During Sustained Phonation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A water-submerged tube used in voice therapy produced smaller aerosol clouds in front but wider sideways and upward spread than usual singing. Safety distances may still be needed in all directions. SLP Other 2024 Do the Nonlinear Dynamic Acoustic Measurements, Nonlinear Energy Difference Ratio and Spectrum Convergence Ratio, Correlate with Perceptual Evaluation of Esophageal Voice Speakers? Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Nonlinear acoustic measures did not match expert ratings of esophageal voice quality, expert and non-expert intelligibility ratings, or transcription accuracy after total laryngectomy. SLP Other 2025 Optimizing Diameter, Length, and Water Immersion in Flow Resistant Tube Vocalization. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Narrowing the tube diameter raises oral pressure far more effectively than lengthening it. Submerging the tube in water adds pressure directly equal to the immersion depth in centimeters. A 2.5 mm tube at 20 cm length with 10 cm water immersion can reach 40 cm H2O. SLP Pilot 2025 Muscle Activity and Aerodynamic Voice Changes at Different Body Postures: A Pilot Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Postural changes did not significantly alter muscle activity or voice production in experienced singers. While minor pitch variations occurred on unstable surfaces, the study found no evidence that these specific postures improve vocal control or reduce effort compared to standard upright standing. SLP Survey 2025 Provider and Patient Satisfaction with Telemedicine Voice Therapy During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Both patients and therapists rated telemedicine voice therapy highly. Fourteen of twenty-two patients who completed a survey said they would choose virtual sessions over in-person care again. Reliable internet strongly predicted this preference. SLP Narrative Review 2025 Potential Biophysiological Mechanisms Underlying Vocal Demands and Vocal Fatigue. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No new methods or outcomes are reported in this review of possible body-level mechanisms for vocal fatigue. SLP Other 2025 Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis of Aerodynamic and Elasticity Forces During Vocal Fold Vibration. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Computer models show that air vortices inside the vocal folds create negative pressure that drives closure. This aerodynamic force exceeds tissue elasticity at the moment of maximum sound intensity, explaining why vertical stiffness gradients are critical for voice efficiency. SLP Other 2025 Empirical Evaluation of the Role of Vocal Fold Collision on Relative Fundamental Frequency in Voicing Offset. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Aligning voice analysis to the moment vocal folds stop touching, rather than when sound ends, cut within-speaker variability by about a third. This supports the theory that vocal fold collision drives pitch changes at voice offset. The method requires endoscopy and is not yet clinically feasible. SLP Case-Control 2025 Clinical Characteristics and Effects of Vocal Demands in Occupational Voice Users With and Without Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Blinded experts could not distinguish voice users with muscle tension dysphonia from typical professionals by looking at their larynxes. Supraglottic compression appeared in both groups. Diagnosis should rely on patient symptoms and voice quality, not just laryngoscopic patterns of tension. SLP Other 2025 Symptom Expression Across Voiced Speech Sounds in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In 18 speakers with adductor laryngeal dystonia reading an all-voiced sentence, symptoms were significantly less likely on nasal and stop consonants than on vowels and approximants. However, every sound segment still carried a high probability of symptoms. SLP Other 2025 Deep-Learning-Based Representation of Vocal Fold Dynamics in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia during Connected Speech in High-Speed Videoendoscopy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new computer model accurately traces vocal fold edges in high-speed video of people with spasmodic dysphonia speaking normally. It handles blurry images and spasms better than previous methods. This tool helps researchers measure voice breaks objectively, but it is not yet a clinical diagnostic test. SLP Pilot 2024 Assessing the Effect of Fatigue on Swallowing Function in Adults with Acute Stroke. A Pilot Study. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation In 13 adults with acute stroke, repeated swallowing tests slowed pharyngeal transit and delay times but left oral timing and laryngeal closure unchanged. This suggests fatigue affects some reflexive swallowing steps more than others, though the sample was too small for firm conclusions. SLP Other 2025 Atypical vocal imitation of speech and song in autism spectrum disorder: Evidence from Mandarin speakers. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Mandarin-speaking autistic children copied timing and pitch shape less accurately than non-autistic peers, especially in speech. Overall pitch height did not differ between groups. In song, timing was less accurate, while pitch height was not. SLP Other 2025 Aerodynamic-induced Effects of Artificial Subglottic Stenosis on Vocal Fold Model Phonatory Response. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Aerodynamic effects of subglottic stenosis on voice remain minimal until obstruction exceeds 80 to 90 percent. Grade I and II stenoses likely do not alter voice quality through airflow changes alone. Clinical voice issues at lower grades may stem from other factors. SLP Other 2025 The Relationship Between Pitch Discrimination and Fundamental Frequency Variation: Effects of Singing Status and Vocal Hyperfunction. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Among non-singers with typical voices, women who were worse at detecting small pitch changes had more variable pitch in connected speech. Singers and women with vocal hyperfunction showed no such link. SLP Survey 2025 Singing Voice Symptomatology Following Presumed SARS-CoV-2 Infection. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Singers who had severe acute COVID-19 were over five times more likely to report a change in singing ability than those with mild infection. Many reported reduced vocal stamina, with fewer able to sing for an hour or more after infection. SLP Case Report 2025 Exploring Personality and Perceived Present Control as Factors in Postsurgical Voice Rest: A Case Comparison. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Two patients after vocal fold surgery were not silent during seven days of voice rest. Their self-reported voice use differed from measured use, and the two patients differed from each other. This cannot show which voice rest protocol predicts adherence. ← Previous PAGE 11 OF 17 Next →
