SLP Survey 2025 Voice Therapy for Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Brazilian voice therapists reported giving older adults both in-person and teletherapy during the pandemic. They reported masks hindered in-person work, while voice assessment was the main remote barrier, though most said patients adhered well. SLP Other 2025 Pre- and Postoperative Voice Therapy for Benign Vocal Fold Lesions: An International Electronic Delphi Consensus Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation International voice experts agreed on 33 components for best-practice therapy around vocal fold surgery. They recommended pre- and postoperative care, including gentle vocalization within the first week and semioccluded vocal tract exercises, rather than prolonged absolute rest. SLP Other 2025 COVID-19 activity screening by a smart-data-driven multi-band voice analysis. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A voice analysis tool using cough, breathing, and speech sounds correctly distinguished COVID-19 patients from healthy controls in 98.46% of cases. It also separated different disease stages, though distinguishing recovered patients from healthy controls was less accurate at 88.57%. SLP Cohort 2025 Effects of Participation in a Structured Choral Program on the Voice of Older Adults. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Healthy older choral singers mostly rated their speaking voice as normal, and voice quality of life did not differ by experience. Airflow measures showed some improvement or maintenance, while singing accuracy changed little. SLP Other 2025 Smartphone Recordings are Comparable to "Gold Standard" Recordings for Acoustic Measurements of Voice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Modern iPhone and Samsung phone recordings captured the same voice quality differences as a research microphone. Scores can shift with distance and room noise. Keep distance and room consistent, or convert phone scores before comparing them. SLP Survey 2025 Effects of Virtual Teaching on Swedish Teachers' Voices During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers reported fewer voice symptoms and less voice handicap when teaching virtually compared to face-to-face. Straining the voice and poor air quality were linked to more symptoms. Stress was also associated with voice problems. Most teachers had no significant voice issues. PT OT SLP Cohort 2025 Relation between Orotracheal Intubation, Inflammatory Markers, Breathing and Voice in Post-COVID-19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Post-COVID patients who needed intubation had longer hospital stays and higher D-dimer levels, but voice and breathing measures did not differ significantly from those who did not need intubation. Across the group, worse voice performance was linked to higher vocal fatigue. SLP Other 2025 Dysphonia Severity Index and Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice Outcomes, and Their Relation in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Hospitalized patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 showed significantly worse voice quality than healthy matched controls on both objective (DSI) and perceptual (CAPE-V) measures. The two assessments correlated strongly in patients, suggesting either can help identify dysphonia during acute infection. SLP Other 2024 The Effect of Habitual Speech Rate on Speaker-Specific Processing in English Stop Voicing Perception. Language and speech North American English listeners did not use a speaker’s habitual speech rate to judge whether English stops were /p/ or /b/. Across three experiments, fast and slow dialogue rate produced no systematic difference in stop perception. SLP Other 2024 Bilingual Children Shift and Relax Second-Language Phoneme Categorization in Response to Accented L2 and Native L1 Speech Exposure. Language and speech Bilingual children changed how they heard English stop sounds after brief exposure to accented English or Spanish speech. Accented English made their English sound categories shift away from Spanish-like. Spanish speech made categories less strict. SLP Other 2024 Front Is High and Back Is Low: Sound-Space Iconicity in Finnish. Language and speech Finnish speakers consistently matched high-pitched sounds to forward movement and low-pitched sounds to backward movement. They also produced these pitch-vowel pairings faster when the mapping aligned with spatial direction. The effect held for static front/back concepts, not just motion. SLP Survey 2024 Does Orkish Sound Evil? Perception of Fantasy Languages and Their Phonetic and Phonological Characteristics. Language and speech German listeners judged fictional languages by sound alone, preferring those with familiar phonemes and voicing. Klingon and Dothraki sounded evil, but Orkish sounded pleasant, contradicting its design. This shows aesthetic judgments rely on similarity to the listener's native language, not just inherent harshness. SLP Other 2025 Phonemic and pitch variability in bilingual preschoolers: A comparison of Jamaican Creole and English. International journal of speech-language pathology Mean pitch and stop-timing measures did not differ between languages. Pitch variability was higher in English than in Jamaican Creole. Pitch variability and stop-timing variability were not related. SLP Cohort 2025 The everyday speech environments of preschoolers with and without cochlear implants. Journal of child language Preschoolers with cochlear implants hear similar amounts of speech and engage in as many conversational turns as their hearing peers. However, unlike hearing children, their language environment does not grow richer with age, and their own vocal output is less responsive to caregiver interaction. SLP Case Series 2024 Dysphagia in Open Partial Horizontal Laryngectomy Type IIa: Quantitative Analysis of Videofluoroscopy using the ASPEKT Method. Dysphagia Ten patients after partial laryngectomy showed poor pharyngeal constriction and heavy residue in the pyriform sinuses, despite prolonged airway closure acting as a compensation. This highlights specific efficiency deficits for targeted therapy rather than general weakness. SLP Case Report 2024 A demonstration of incorporating discriminative stimuli into an AAC device during functional communication training. Augmentative and alternative communication (Baltimore, Md. : 1985) Adding colored icons to an AAC app helped one non-speaking teen with severe behaviors distinguish when requests would be honored. He reduced aggression and increased correct requests, but this was a single case and requires more testing before generalizing. SLP Other 2025 A Tool for the Assessment of Swallowing Safety and Efficiency in Adults: Turkish Adaptation of Boston Residue and Clearance Scale. Dysphagia Five speech therapists reliably scored residue locations on 102 videos of 25 stroke patients using the Turkish Boston Residue and Clearance Scale. The tool consistently identified residue in three areas: the laryngeal vestibule, hypopharynx, and oropharynx. It requires frame-by-frame review. SLP Cohort 2024 Acoustic features of vocalizations in typically developing and autistic infants in the first year. Research in developmental disabilities Infants later diagnosed with autism produced cries, whimpers, and protophones that sounded acoustically identical to typically developing infants. However, unlike typically developing infants, those with autism did not adjust their vocal pitch or duration in response to caregiver speech. SLP Other 2025 Accuracy of Dysphagia Screening by Non-clinical Research Staff in the Emergency Department. Dysphagia Non-clinical emergency research staff trained for 4 hours made swallow-screen pass/fail decisions similar to speech-language pathologists in 42 older adults. Agreement was slightly closer for the TOR-BSST than for the 3-ounce water test. This supports research screening, not clinical decisions. SLP Other 2025 Can Voice Parameters Provide Cutoff Values to Predict Dysphagia in Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis? Dysphagia Shimmer values above 1.69 before swallowing and 1.57 after predict dysphagia risk in multiple sclerosis, with moderate accuracy. These acoustic measures offer a low-cost screening aid, but cannot replace instrumental assessment for confirming aspiration. SLP Cohort 2025 Quality of Life in Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis Patients after Vocal Fold Surgery: An In-Depth Exploration. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Among 100 adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis after vocal fold surgery, older age was linked to less voice-related handicap and distress. More surgeries were linked to more distress. Gender, HPV type, vaccination, surgery site, and recovery time were not linked to these scores. SLP Other 2025 Clinical Implementation of DIGEST as an Evidence-Based Practice Tool for Videofluoroscopy in Oncology: A Six-Year Single Institution Implementation Evaluation. Dysphagia A new swallowing severity tool was used in 93% of over 13,000 videofluoroscopy exams at a cancer center. Clinicians recorded it accurately in almost all cases. It fits easily into existing workflows, though it cannot be used for patients with total laryngectomies or fistulas. SLP Cohort 2025 Fiberoptic Endoscopy Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) Findings Associated with High Pneumonia Risk in a Cohort of Patients at Risk of Dysphagia. Dysphagia Aspiration seen on swallowing endoscopy (FEES) was independently linked to pneumonia in patients at risk of dysphagia. Penetration and residue were associated only when aspiration was also present, so aspiration is the key finding for pneumonia risk. SLP Other 2025 Sensory Changes Related to Swallowing in Motor Neurone Disease. Dysphagia Most studies found reduced taste, smell, and laryngeal sensation in motor neurone disease, but evidence quality was low and findings were contradictory. Clinicians should consider sensory changes when assessing swallowing safety, particularly silent aspiration risk, despite limited high-quality proof. SLP Case Series 2024 Effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on the speech of Spanish-speaking Parkinson's disease patients during the first year of treatment. CoDAS Across the group, speech measures did not show confirmed change during the first year after STN-DBS. Individual patients varied, with some increases and some decreases in specific measures, so no uniform speech effect can be assumed. SLP Cohort 2025 Influence of Carnatic Vocal Training on Voice Measures in Males. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Male Carnatic singers with 6–10 years of training showed lower pitch measures in the low and middle registers during a humming task, suggesting improved control in these ranges. However, they also exhibited increased noise in the middle register and no significant differences in most other acoustic or aerodynamic voice measures compared to less trained singers. SLP Pilot 2024 Vocal Fold Injury Produces Similar Biomechanical Outcomes in Male and Female Rabbits. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Injured vocal folds were stiffer and vibrated asymmetrically in all rabbits. No consistent sex differences appeared in stiffness or vibration. A previous finding of worse healing in females with stem cells may reflect immune response to the implant, not sex-based wound healing. SLP Case-Control 2024 Hyolaryngeal Kinematics in Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia Determined by Ultrasound. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Ultrasound showed greater hyoid and thyroid movement during voicing in primary muscle tension dysphonia than in healthy speakers, especially thyroid toward hyoid. Thyroid movement tracked speaking effort and voice handicap. SLP Other 2024 Characterization of the Vertical Stiffness Gradient in Cadaveric Human and Excised Canine Larynges. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Both canine and human vocal fold tissue was stiffer at the lower edge than the upper edge. In human tissue stiffness rose more toward the back than the front. SLP Other 2024 Vocal Fold Vibratory Dose and Perceived Exertion Responses to the Fluid Interval Test for Voice (FIT-V): A Novel Vocal Loading Task Platform. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new interval voice exercise caused similar overall effort ratings to loud reading but only half the vocal fold vibration. Participants felt more strain in their chest and abdomen and less in their throat, suggesting this task loads the respiratory system while sparing vocal fold tissue. SLP Other 2025 Validation of the Spanish Version of the Voice-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire: Psychometric Properties and Clinical Applications. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) The Spanish version of the Voice-Related Quality of Life questionnaire accurately distinguishes patients with voice disorders from healthy individuals. A score below 92.5 suggests a voice problem, and the tool reliably tracks improvements after therapy. SLP Other 2024 Variability in quantitative outcomes of instrumental swallowing assessments in adults: a scoping review. CoDAS Quantitative measures from instrumental swallowing exams varied from low to high across 13 studies. The exams, parameters, bolus volumes and consistencies were not standardized, so single values are hard to interpret or compare. SLP Other 2024 Gender and age biases in the assessment of speech accuracy: A study of speech-language clinicians' ratings of /s/ accuracy. International journal of language & communication disorders Speech-language pathologists rated /s/ productions from children assigned female at birth as more accurate than from children assigned male at birth. The gap widened when age was disclosed, not sex alone. Clinicians should watch age and sex cues. SLP Other 2024 Pressure Distributions in Glottal Geometries With Multichannel Airflows. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Computer simulations matched physical model measurements of pressure in complex vocal fold shapes, with errors under 0.1 kPa. This validates the method for studying voice production mechanics, but does not yet provide clinical guidance on patient treatment. SLP Narrative Review 2025 Chemotherapy/Radiotherapy-Induced Dysphagia in Head and Neck Tumors: A Challenge for Otolaryngologists in Low- to Middle-Income Countries. Dysphagia This review outlines how chemoradiotherapy causes dysphagia in head and neck cancer, noting silent aspiration occurs in up to 50% of patients. It recommends early speech pathology evaluation and swallowing exercises to prevent muscle atrophy, especially where advanced imaging is unavailable. SLP Other 2024 Evidence-Based Recommendations for Tablet Recordings From the Bridge2AI-Voice Acoustic Experiments. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Tablets with cheap headset microphones produce voice data nearly identical to expensive research equipment. Holding the tablet at arm's length fails, especially in noisy rooms. Use a headset mic at 2.5-5 cm for reliable acoustic analysis. SLP Other 2025 Acoustic Exaggeration Enhances Speech Discrimination in Young Autistic Children. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In young autistic children with speech delay, brain responses to syllables were easier to distinguish when pitch range or consonant timing was exaggerated. This was a passive EEG finding, not proof that speaking this way improves speech or language. SLP Qualitative 2024 Voice as a Working Tool for Teachers: A Qualitative Study of Work-Related Perceptions and Impact. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Teachers described their voice as central to teaching and said dry air, large classes, and low institutional support strain it. Many lacked formal vocal care training. They said amplification helped when available. PT SLP Qualitative 2024 Development of a Comprehensive Cough Therapy Program (CCTP) for chronic cough in India: a qualitative study. CoDAS Chronic cough professionals in India agreed a multidisciplinary behavioral program was needed, but half the medical group had not referred patients to such therapy. They shaped a cough module around education, breathing, hydration, suppression, and complementary medicine advice; no outcomes were tested. SLP Other 2024 Personality Traits and Self-Reported Vocal Fatigue and Other Voice Measures Among Teachers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In 73 teachers, higher vocal fatigue scores linked to lower extraversion and agreeableness. Longer breath-holding during testing linked to lower conscientiousness and openness. These are cross-sectional associations; voice measures cannot diagnose personality, and personality may simply change how symptoms are reported. SLP Survey 2024 Vocal Effort in Clinical Settings of North and South American Countries: Characterization From Argentinian, Chilean, Colombian, and the United States Clinician's Reports. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice clinicians across four countries report vocal effort in over 60% of their caseloads, but prevalence varies significantly by location and experience. Most patients struggle to define the symptom. Using specific self-report measures like the Vocal Fatigue Index was associated with higher identification rates. SLP Case-Control 2024 Vocal Fold Dissipated Power in Females with Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Females with phonotraumatic vocal hyperfunction had higher vocal fold dissipated power than matched controls; females with non-phonotraumatic hyperfunction did not. Calibrating the neck sensor for each person kept this difference detectable; generic sound-level estimates erased it. SLP Survey 2024 Understanding Tinnitus Clinical Care in the Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense: Overview of Survey Results. American journal of audiology Veterans Affairs and Defense audiology and ENT clinics mostly reported tinnitus services, but many mental health providers did not know services existed and felt unprepared. Resources, low priority, and training were the top barriers. SLP Other 2024 A Methodology to Quantify the Effective Vertical Thickness of Prephonatory Vocal Fold Medial Surface. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new way to measure vocal fold thickness from scans works best with a tiny 0.05 mm threshold. If the midline is hard to see, assume the folds are less convergent to keep the measurement accurate. SLP Other 2024 Voice Type Component Profile Model of Glottal Gap Voice in Ex Vivo Canine Larynges. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In excised dog larynges, gaps wider than 1.5 mm sharply reduced periodic voice signals and increased chaotic ones. This suggests a threshold where small gaps stop being harmless, but the ex vivo model limits direct clinical application. SLP Other 2024 Breathy Vocal Quality, Background Noise, and Hearing Loss: How Do These Adverse Conditions Affect Speech Perception by Older Adults? Ear and hearing Older adults understood sentences less well and needed more effort when a simulated talker's voice was severely breathy. Mild-to-moderate breathiness did not have this effect, and hearing loss did not add to the difficulty. PT OT SLP Cohort 2025 Time to Onset of Dysphagia Following Head and Neck Radiation. Dysphagia New swallowing problems mostly appear within six months of head and neck radiation, but 16% emerge later, up to years after treatment. Clinicians should maintain long-term monitoring for all survivors, as new dysphagia remains a risk even after a period of normal function. PT OT SLP Pilot 2025 A Pilot Study of a Modified Swallowing Screening Tool for Critically Ill Patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Dysphagia A modified bedside screening protocol combining ultrasound and specific dye tests allowed 13 ICU patients to safely resume oral feeding without aspiration symptoms. This approach offers a feasible alternative to invasive endoscopy in isolation settings, though its accuracy remains unvalidated against gold-standard tests. SLP Case-Control 2024 The Prevalence of Creak Across Breath Groups in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Speakers with adductor laryngeal dystonia produced creaky voice on 22% of phonemes, compared to 5% in controls. While both groups creaked more near the end of a breath, those with dystonia creaked throughout the phrase, not just at the end. SLP Other 2024 Validation of a Low-Cost Method for Recording and Supervising Otolaryngology Trainee Endoscopies. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A low-cost 3D-printed smartphone adaptor for endoscopy was rated highly for usability and portability by trainees and attendings. It provided adequate image quality for supervision in inpatient and emergency settings, offering a viable alternative when commercial adapters are unavailable or too expensive. ← Previous PAGE 12 OF 17 Next →
