SLP Cohort 2023 Opinion of speech-language pathologist on the use of photobiomodulation in the vocal clinic. CoDAS Brazilian speech-language therapists widely report using photobiomodulation in voice practice, mostly before exercises, on the thyroid cartilage with 808-830 nm light. The paper describes their reported training and parameters, not whether photobiomodulation improves voice. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 The Effects of Substance Misuse on Auditory and Vestibular Function: A Systematic Review. Ear and hearing Substance misuse, particularly opioids and alcohol, is linked to hearing and balance problems in case reports. Opioid use often causes permanent, profound hearing loss. Alcohol misuse is associated with high-frequency hearing loss and central balance deficits. Evidence is weak and mostly anecdotal. SLP Other 2023 Predictors of Emotional Prosody Identification by School-Age Children With Cochlear Implants and Their Peers With Normal Hearing. Ear and hearing School-age children with cochlear implants identified spoken emotions less accurately than normal-hearing peers. Older age was linked to better scores in both groups. In children with implants, longer device use and higher problem-solving ability were linked to better scores. SLP Other 2023 Analysis of different performance times of the voiced trill technique in older women. CoDAS The voiced trill did not produce different immediate voice ratings in older women with and without self-perceived vocal changes, although judges most often rated voices as improved after 1 minute. SLP Survey 2023 Proposal of requirements for the development of a training simulator for the auditory-perceptual judgment of voice. CoDAS Experienced voice trainers mostly agree voice listening training should begin after early coursework, start by detecting vocal deviation, then identify dominant quality, then rate severity. Training hours, voices, scales, and effect checks varied widely. OT SLP Case-Control 2024 Acoustic and Semantic Processing of Auditory Scenes in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism detected changes in complex sounds and understood speech in noise as well as peers matched for IQ, but worse than age-matched peers. Both groups used meaning and sound cues similarly, suggesting autism alone does not impair auditory scene processing. SLP Cohort 2023 Future teachers and the self-perception of vocal symptoms and knowledge about vocal health and hygiene. CoDAS Future teachers reported high vocal symptoms but low knowledge of vocal hygiene. Symptoms peaked in first-year students, while knowledge improved in later years and with age. Prior voice guidance did not significantly reduce reported symptoms, suggesting current educational interventions may be insufficient. SLP Survey 2023 Social distancing and choral singing during the Covid-19 pandemic: challenges and vocal symptoms of chorists. CoDAS Older choristers reported more voice problems during remote rehearsals. Younger choristers reported fewer throat symptoms but more anxiety about singing alone. Both groups struggled with concentrating on video calls and reduced practice time. SLP Case-Control 2023 Videofluoroscopic measures of swallowing in people with stable COPD compared to healthy aging. CoDAS In stable COPD, swallowing showed shorter airway closure, earlier and shorter upper esophageal sphincter opening, and weaker pharyngeal squeeze compared with matched healthy adults. Penetration-aspiration was absent, so these differences may raise aspiration risk. SLP Case Report 2023 Swallowing capacity and gravity of the laryngotracheal aspiration risk in atypical cerebellar stroke: case report. CoDAS In a single outpatient one year and five months after a cerebellar stroke, bedside swallowing screens found moderate dysphagia with aspiration risk. She had left mouth numbness, poor voluntary cough, and choking with liquids. SLP Cohort 2023 Comparison between the acoustic fundamental frequency of the voice and the vibration frequency of the vocal folds analyzed by digital kymography. CoDAS Acoustic voice frequency matches vocal fold vibration frequency measured by digital kymography in healthy adults. This confirms that standard acoustic tests accurately reflect laryngeal mechanics, supporting their use for monitoring voice function without needing complex imaging for basic frequency assessment. SLP Cohort 2024 Prediction of dysphagia aspiration through machine learning-based analysis of patients' postprandial voices. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A machine learning model analyzing post-meal voice recordings distinguished aspiration from normal swallowing with an average accuracy score of 0.83. This offers a potential non-invasive screening tool, though it requires further validation before clinical use. SLP Other 2023 VoxMore: technological artifact to assist voice acoustic evaluation in the teaching-learning process and clinical practice. CoDAS A new Praat plugin called VoxMore was developed to generate detailed acoustic voice reports for teaching and clinical use. It visualizes voice signals across time, frequency, and cepstral domains. No patient outcomes or diagnostic accuracy were tested. SLP Other 2023 Cross-cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Vocal Congruence Scale and Transgender Congruence Scale. CoDAS The Vocal Congruence Scale and Transgender Congruence Scale were successfully adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. A pre-test with 38 transgender individuals showed that all items were understood and applicable, providing clinicians with usable tools for assessment. SLP Pilot 2024 Plug-and-Play Microphones for Recording Speech and Voice with Smart Devices. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Consumer plug-and-play microphones matched the reference microphone only for pitch and vowel formant movement. They did not reliably measure most other speech features, and group differences became weaker, so use the same microphone throughout. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Longitudinal Analysis of Dysphagia and Factors Related to Postoperative Pneumonia in Patients Undergoing Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer. Dysphagia After esophagectomy, pharyngeal residue and vocal fold immobility worsened, with residue linked to pneumonia. Hyoid movement and vocal fold issues persisted at three months, though all patients returned to a full diet and no aspiration occurred. SLP Other 2024 Validation and Development of Voice Handicap Index-Throat for Koreans. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) The Korean Voice Handicap Index-Throat reliably measures throat symptoms alongside voice issues. It distinguished patients from healthy controls and scored highest in those with primary throat problems, helping clinicians separate voice complaints from throat complaints. SLP Pilot 2023 Immediate effects of the incentive spirometer in women with healthy voice. CoDAS Using an incentive spirometer in 22 vocally healthy women immediately improved some voice stability measures and maximum expiratory volume. Listeners judged half the voices unchanged. The study did not test people with voice disorders. SLP Cohort 2023 Spectral and cepstral measurements in women with behavioral dysphonia. CoDAS In 146 women with behavioral dysphonia, cepstral measures (CPP and CPPS) tracked hoarseness severity and distinguished breathy from rough voices. Spectral slope (H1-H2) differed between those with and without nodules. Spectral decrease did not separate groups or correlate with strain. SLP Other 2024 Acoustic Analysis of Swallowing of an Experimental Meal of Three Food Textures: A Comparative Aging Study. Dysphagia Number of swallows and average swallow duration did not differ between adults 50 to 70 and over 70. Over a three-texture meal, older adults had longer gaps between swallows, longer meal time, and fewer swallows per minute. SLP Case Report 2023 Clinical Case Study: Pediatric Bilateral Benign Vocal Fold Lesions. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups A 4-year-old boy with benign vocal fold lesions completed six voice therapy sessions over 12 weeks. Follow-up imaging showed smaller lesions and better vocal fold closure, while voice quality scores improved from moderate to mild dysphonia. SLP Other 2023 Voice and Communication Training Program Improves Performance of University Students in Oral Presentations. CoDAS After an eight-week training covering voice, body language, social skills, neuro-linguistic programming, and language, 38 students improved by examiner and self ratings. Single group, so components cannot be separated. SLP Other 2023 Self-perception of the Immediate Impact on the Voice of Gospel Singers after a one-hour Presentation. CoDAS Gospel singers with existing vocal complaints reported significantly higher fatigue and difficulty singing after one-hour performances. Even those without complaints showed signs of vocal strain, suggesting all amateur singers may benefit from post-performance vocal care guidance. SLP Cohort 2023 Prevalence of hearing loss and health vulnerability in children aged 25 to 36 months: an analysis of spatial distribution. CoDAS No significant link was found between hearing loss and health vulnerability in 95 Brazilian toddlers. However, 48.4% failed screening, yet nearly half did not attend the follow-up diagnostic assessment, leaving the true prevalence of hearing loss unknown. SLP Other 2023 Modifications of auditory feedback and its effects on the voice of adult subjects: a scoping review. CoDAS Masking your own voice with noise tends to make adults speak louder; amplifying it tends to make them speak softer. Pitch shifts trigger reflexive pitch corrections. This is a scoping review of experiments, not evidence that a voice therapy works. SLP Other 2023 Cross-cultural adaptation of the Dysphonia Screening Tool (DST-Br) for European Portuguese (EP). CoDAS The Dysphonia Screening Tool was adapted into European Portuguese using two simple yes/no questions about voice strain and hoarseness. Thirty people with dysphonia understood the items without needing a 'not applicable' option. This version requires formal validation before clinical use. SLP Survey 2024 Self-perception of voice, hearing, and general health in screening for voice changes in older women. CoDAS Among 95 older women, 44 screened positive for voice disorders. These women rated their voice, hearing, and general health worse than those who screened negative. They also reported more sore throats, sinusitis, and respiratory allergies. Age, education, smoking, and hydration were not linked to the screening result. SLP Other 2023 Quantifying the Occupational Voice Use of Teachers. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Female teachers used their voice 16.2% of monitored time during work and 8.2% off work. Teachers with voice disorders did not differ from healthy teachers in vocal dose measures. SLP Case Report 2024 Intensive Voice Treatment following Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection for a Speaker with Abductor Laryngeal Dystonia: An Exploratory Case Study. Seminars in speech and language In one woman with abductor laryngeal dystonia whose voice had not improved after botulinum injections, intensive teletherapy was followed by increased sustained vowel time, better perceived voice quality, and a normal voice handicap score by 3 months. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2024 Barriers to healthcare and a 'triple empathy problem' may lead to adverse outcomes for autistic adults: A qualitative study. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults described a 'triple empathy problem' where communication breaks down due to autism-specific differences, general doctor-patient mismatches, and medical culture. Barriers like sensory overload and phone-only appointments led to healthcare avoidance and severe, self-reported adverse outcomes. SLP Other 2024 Correspondence between consonant inventories obtained using modified naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) and parent report. Journal of communication disorders Parent report and modified naturalistic listening agreed on only 13% of toddlers' consonant inventory sizes. Parents missed the glottal [h] and glides, but agreed with coders on 87% of stops, the category clinicians watch for velopharyngeal closure post-surgery. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2024 Hope as experienced by people with acquired brain injury in a rehabilitation-or recovery process: a qualitative systematic review and thematic synthesis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Hope after brain injury is a double-edged sword: it drives recovery but can cause despair when unfulfilled. Patients need therapists to make small progress visible, set realistic goals, and balance honesty with support. The therapeutic alliance is crucial for maintaining hope. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Sex differences in the age of childhood autism diagnosis and the impact of co-occurring conditions. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In 1438 children diagnosed with autism, boys were diagnosed earlier than girls, but that sex difference did not remain after other diagnoses were included. Speech, audiology, and physical or occupational therapy visits were linked to earlier diagnosis. SLP Pilot 2024 Swallowing and feeding of young children on high-flow oxygen therapy. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Most young children on high-flow oxygen tolerated pureed and semi-solid foods safely. Thin liquids triggered coughing and aspiration signs in four children. Chewing was often too tiring. Start with thicker textures and monitor closely, as this small study cannot prove safety for all patients. SLP Cohort 2024 Prelingually Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants Show Better Perception of Voice Cues and Speech in Competing Speech Than Postlingually Deaf Adults With Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants outperformed postlingually deaf adults in perceiving voice cues and separating speech in competing speech. Children used both pitch and vocal tract length cues, unlike adults who relied mainly on pitch. This suggests early implantation aids the brain in interpreting degraded signals. SLP Other 2024 The influence of listener experience, measurement scale and speech task on the reliability of auditory-perceptual evaluation of vocal quality. CoDAS Reliability of voice ratings depends on the task and scale, not just experience. CAPE-V sentences showed the highest agreement among all listener groups, while sustained vowels were least reliable. Standardized training improved agreement more than years of clinical experience did. SLP Other 2024 (Why) Do Transparent Hearing Devices Impair Speech Perception in Collocated Noise? Trends in hearing Transparent hearing devices made normal-hearing listeners need a slightly worse signal-to-noise ratio to understand speech in same-direction noise. The effect was small, about 0.5 to 1 dB for most devices. Listening effort did not show a clear change. One earphone showed no impairment. SLP Narrative Review 2024 Impaired oral health: a required companion of bacterial aspiration pneumonia. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Poor oral health and plaque biofilms are a required pillar of bacterial aspiration pneumonia in at-risk patients. Daily toothbrushing and organized professional oral care may reduce pneumonia, febrile days, and death. SLP Other 2024 Validity of Acoustic Measures Obtained Using Various Recording Methods Including Smartphones With and Without Headset Microphones. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Smartphone recordings produced voice measures that closely tracked a research microphone across 24 samples. Direct phone recording did not differ from the standard for CPP and L/H ratio. Still, microphone and room noise changed some values, so do not mix devices when tracking progress. SLP Cohort 2024 The Effectiveness of Slightly Thick Liquids for Improving Swallowing in Bottle-Fed Children With Aerodigestive Concerns. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Slightly thick liquids did not significantly reduce penetration frequency in bottle-fed children with swallowing concerns. While they lowered the amount of penetration seen, they increased sucking effort and pharyngeal residue, suggesting a trade-off between safety and efficiency. SLP Other 2024 Cepstral Peak Prominence Smoothed - CPPS and Acoustic Voice Quality Index - AVQI in healthy and altered children's voices: comparation, relationship with auditory-perceptual judgment and cut-off points. CoDAS Acoustic measures CPPS and AVQI successfully distinguish healthy from deviated voices in children. Children with voice disorders had lower CPPS and higher AVQI scores. The study provides specific cut-off values for these tests to help clinicians identify vocal issues in pediatric patients. SLP Pilot 2023 Traditional and Visual-Acoustic Biofeedback Treatment via Telepractice for Residual Speech Sound Disorders Affecting /ɹ/: Pilot study. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Seven children with persistent /ɹ/ distortions completed 20 telepractice sessions combining visual-acoustic biofeedback and motor-based treatment. Six showed clinically meaningful improvement, but the design cannot separate which component drove the gains. SLP Other 2024 Immediate effect of inspiratory exercise with exerciser and respiratory encourager in women without vocal complaints. CoDAS A single inspiratory exercise session increased maximum phonation time for the /s/ sound but produced no immediate changes in vocal quality or acoustic measures. It does not serve as a vocal warm-up for improving voice stability. SLP Other 2024 Cross-cultural adaptation of the Voice-related Experiences of Nonbinary Individuals - VENI to Brazilian Portuguese. CoDAS The Brazilian Portuguese VENI voice questionnaire was pre-tested with 21 nonbinary people, and standard responses were more common than non-applicable responses for every item. It can help speech therapists ask about voice experiences. SLP Case Report 2024 Ultrasonographic analysis of the hyoid bone distance in individuals with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia. CoDAS Ultrasound showed the hyoid bone moved less upward during swallowing in adults with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia than in healthy adults. Food consistency did not change the measurement. SLP Other 2024 Cross-cultural adaptation of the Iranian Voice Quality of Life Profile into Brazilian Portuguese. CoDAS The Iranian voice quality-of-life questionnaire was adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. Thirty-six adults at risk for dysphonia understood all 43 items, and no item needed change. It is not yet validated, so it should not be used as a validated measure. SLP Cohort 2024 Elderly people with hearing loss and cognitive decline: speech perception performance in noise. CoDAS Cognitive decline did not worsen speech-in-noise perception in elderly people with hearing loss. Instead, the degree of hearing loss and education level determined performance. Clinicians should prioritize audiological and educational factors over cognitive status when assessing these patients. SLP Survey 2024 Vocal risk mapping in classical singers: an analysis of the self-perception of voice quality, vocal fatigue, and singing voice handicap. CoDAS Classical singers reported low overall voice handicap but higher vocal fatigue and avoidance when they used their voices to demonstrate examples for students. Cool-down practices were also associated with higher restriction scores. This suggests that teaching demands, not just singing, drive perceived vocal strain. SLP Other 2024 The role of the age and gender, and the complexity of the syntactic unit in the perception of affective emotions in voice. CoDAS Latvian listeners recognized angry voices at 84.9%, happy voices at 67.4%, and neutral voices at 73.2%. Older listeners were less accurate for angry and happy voices. Phrases helped angry recognition; paragraphs helped happy and neutral recognition. SLP Other 2024 Word and Gender Identification in the Speech of Transgender Individuals. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation When trans women's speech was altered to have a gender-neutral pitch, listeners confused the words more often. Tokens identified as the wrong word were rated less feminine, suggesting listeners use perceived gender to guess the intended vowel. ← Previous PAGE 10 OF 17 Next →
